Isaac jumps on board to Toss the Boss Mayor Anne Baker will be tossed out of an aeroplane with four Council volunteers to raise funds for local public hospitals.

Mayor Baker said she was looking forward to facing the big drop with staff from a Mackay Skydive plane on Saturday August 13.

“It’s for a fantastic cause with donations going to much need medical equipment for Isaac Public Hospitals through the Mackay Hospital Foundation.”

“These funds will provide the extras that give patients the best health care possible and support our hospital staff.”

“I’m joined by brave staff members Chief Information Officer Robert Kane, Coordinator Construction Resources Ross Sorensen, Place Officer Candice Jenkins and Customer Service Officer Jenna Phillips.”

“Every one of us at some stage of our lives will either be or have someone we love, cared for at a local public hospital.

“Through Mackay Skydive’s Toss the Boss and the Mackay Hospital Foundation, you can donate towards medical equipment at your local hospital so better care is available to people who live, work and visit Isaac.”

“Our team target is $4,000 so please head online, dig deep and donate to the Isaac Regional Council Toss the Boss team.”

Hands on coding and robotics call out for everyone Want to get hands on with coding and robotics?

Young people aged nine to 16-years can join Lego Robotics workshops as team members. And adults with an interest in science, technology, engineering, arts or mathematics (STEAM) can take part as mentors through the Isaac libraries program. The Coding and Robotics workshops will run from August until October this year at libraries around the region.

Mentors will work with Isaac Libraries staff to guide teams to build working robots, solve problems and complete challenges.

Mayor Anne Baker said the program would also raise awareness of libraries as fun spaces to learn.

Teams will come face to face at the Isaac Libraries Tech Fest on Saturday October 8 at Dysart Library.

Teams will base in Moranbah, Dysart, St Lawrence, Carmila, Glenden and Middlemount.

Interested participants should contact their local library for more information and to place expressions of interest.

The Lego Robotics program is thanks to a grant awarded through the Queensland State Library and supports the growing global trend in fostering STEAM learning and development across all ages and through libraries.

“Coding is the starting point of the process which involves telling a computer what you want it to do through step-by-step commands,” she explained.

“If you can speak the language of code you can contribute towards creating future solutions. Learning to code and applying it to real world issues helps you become a critical thinker, problem solver and a creative innovator.

“The program, which provides building blocks to join an increasingly digital, globalised world, will allow people to develop skills in coding and robotics and take part in an exciting team challenge,” she said.

To showcase the skills learned, a regional 10-week challenge will unfold with demonstrations held at libraries, community and school events.

Clermont Work Camp Advisory Committee call for members Isaac Regional Council is calling for expressions of interest from persons interested in serving as members of the Community Advisory Committee for the Clermont Work Camp – Queensland Corrective Services.

The Committee membership is honorary and members participate on a voluntary basis.

The Community Advisory Committee’s role is to: • Provide information and advice with respect to the local community views and concerns.

• Promote effective and supportive relationships between communities and corrective service facilities, and thus facilitate the reintegration of offenders to the community.

• Provide links to the community, which will assist in developing opportunities for prisoners in their rehabilitation and reparations.

• Identify, assess and priorities community service projects.

On the Shelf History books for sale

The Clermont Library has some history books relating to the Isaac Region, for sale.

If you have an interest in local history, these books would be great to add to your book collection or make a nice gift for someone who likes reading books on ‘Australiana’.

The books for sale are: ‘Below These Mountains’ by Lyall Ford ($15), ‘Behold Nebo: A History of Nebo Shire’ by George A. Mayes ($20) and ‘A Photographic Record of Colonial Queensland’ by Lyall Ford ($20).

Both books by Lyall Ford relate to his great grandfather pioneer photographer and miner, John Henry Mills, who lived in Mount Britton.

Bag a book bargain If you love books and a bargain, come and check out the Clermont Library Book Sale.

Most of the books and items on sale are preloved library books in good condition and paperbacks, magazines and CDs are priced at $2, hardbacks and DVDs cost $3 or buy a bag of books for $12.

Westerns, including large print titles, have been added to the book sale so if you enjoy reading westerns, come in and round up a few.

If you prefer romance, there are plenty of hardback Mills and Boons on sale too.

First Five Forever The First Five Forever program aims to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes.

Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child.

The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families?

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children.

Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

First of all let me say that it has been good to see the rain. It was also disappointing to have so many people wanting to drive through flooded roads in the area. If the water is high enough to cause us apprehension to drive through, then everyone should be the same. If the roads get impassable then road closed signs will be put up.

The reduce speed and water over the road signs means just that REDUCE SPEED. This is so you can check the height of the water compared to your vehicle, a little two door sports car is different to say a Range Rover.

The fines for disobeying the law are quite steep as they should be. If you get stuck in floodwaters and need rescuing then you put a lot of other lives at risk. Think of this before even deciding to drive in this sort of weather.

Also parents check on the kids. Floodwaters near drains can suck young children in and under, drowning them within seconds.

The weekend phantom races, that is the races you have when you don’t have races turned out to be a big night. To say it was like the bad old days would be a little exaggerated but people given enough time, do tend to play up at the end of the night. Couple of fights at the Grand Hotel ended with fines being issued. Fines for this sort of stuff have again taken another rise with fighting outside the pub around $350 and with fighting in the pub around $740. Of course if people want to contest these tickets because they felt justified in breaking the law, then by all means go in front of the Magistrate. Like all fines he or she can dish out a lot bigger penalties, ban you from the pubs and even throw you in the can for a couple of weeks. All they have to do is watch the footage, that’s right you’re on camera.

Last week I had the opportunity to travel with students from Grade 11 and 12 at Clermont High School on a University Tour (camp) in Brisbane.

Mr Matt Martin, Miss Helen Henderson and I were defacto parents for a few days. The kids did the school proud and they looked spectacular in the new formal uniform. They were involved in real seminars and were rubbing shoulders with students from elite schools (in their drab browns and greens) and managed to ask pertinent questions of guest speakers, student ambassadors and academics alike. Thank you to Mr Martin for organizing the tour. Thank you to Glencore, Clermont SHS P&C and all other sponsors for keeping the cost down.

Crime again is at a low point in the area. One young foolish man from Saturday nights festivities decided to rally drive around the Macdonald’s Flat units but ended up parking into a fence. With the car damaged and also the fence taken out his problems are not over. He will find out more bad news from the Magistrate.

For the front counter, busy day on Monday 18 with Tuesday the 19 seeing me having to trapes into Mackay for meetings and training. The counter will be open again on August 25 for licensing and other inquiries but, please ring before you come down.

For police work if you do come to the station and it is closed, knock on the door in case we are in and involved doing something else. If you get no answer then use the blue phone or dial Mackay Police District Communications on 4968 3444 in case we are out in the vehicle. Dial 000 if your life is in danger or you need an immediate response.

There are many benefits of Yoga, this class is suitable for pregnant women, screening will be conducted prior to participation. BOOKINGS FOR YOGA ARE ESSENTIAL. $16.50 for casuals . $6.60 for children up to 14 years. Power Yoga is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.

SPIN/Revolution Great music and a fantastic calorie burning hour of indoor cycling. You’ll learn correct technique for improved performance and have fun cycling.

Bookings essential. Revolution Express is a half hour session being added to the program in November all indoor cycling classes are moderate to high intensity classes.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy.

It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

XT - THUMP boxing It’s a nice way to start your day. This class incorporates 10mins of circuit cardio, 10mins strength training and 20mins thump boxing. A fully functional total body workout that burns, burns, burns.

80’s Night This will be a quick 30 minute aerobic workout inspired by the ‘Greats’ of the 80’s. It will incorporate acerbic movement, 80’s Step Aerobics and some of the old time chain dances. It’s fitness and fun in one!

Open gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Metafit This is a 30 minute bodyweight training system that gets results!

It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire!

Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout.

This is achieved through the use of Barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.
