Monash Lodge star weavers

On Wednesday November 30, Clermont Library hosted a senior’s event and had a wonderful visit from Monash Logdge residents to help assist our star weaving efforts.

Our running total is 5081 and we’re aiming for 10,000 stars by the end of March, so we’re now half way there!

About the ‘One Million Stars’ project Isaac Libraries have set a goal of making 10,000 stars for the ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ star weaving project.

Clermont Library has a star weaving station set up for people to drop in anytime during opening hours to weave a star from ribbon.

If you want to escape the heat, come to the Clermont Library to enjoy the air-conditioning and make a few stars. Gather a few friends and make a morning or afternoon of it.

Conservation on the cards at Clermont Historical Centre Clermont Historical Centre is set to take a short break to focus on conservation works.

The exhibition features local stories, photography and memorabilia from the 1916 Clermont Flood.

The centre will be open for the start of the December school holidays.

Visitors are welcome Wednesday to Saturday 9am to 3pm up until the closure on Christmas Eve. For more details on Clermont Historical Centre’s opening times please visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au or call Council’s Customer Service Centre available 24/7 on 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227).

The centre will close from Saturday December 24 and reopen from Wednesday March 1, 2017.

Mayor Anne Baker said the closure is to carry out preservation works on Clermont’s precious historical items and prepare upcoming exhibitions.

Top five things to see in Clermont •

Walk through history at Hoods Lagoon - The footpath around the Lagoon offer visitors the chance to have an insightful look into the history of Clermont. View the various memorials including 1916 flood markers, Billy Sing Memorial, Sister Mary Mackillop Grotto and more.

1916 Flood Graveside Memorial – Commemorate the anniversary of the 1916 flood at the Clermont Cemetery from 9am December 28. The ceremony will honour the lives lost 100 years on from the tragedy that almost wiped out the town.

Iconic landmarks – Visit Clermont’s famous Piano tree on Drummond Street, depicting the astonishing height of the 1916 flood. Then stop by Herschel Street to admire the painted coal wagons. If you look closely you might find a green tree frog hiding in each one!

Visit Theresa Creek Dam - Theresa Creek Dam is located approximately 20km south-west of Clermont and is an idyllic recreation area for camping, fishing and skiing.

Try you luck at Gold fossicking - Fossickers require a Queensland fossicking licence and General Permission Areas (GPA) fossicking kit in all areas and must comply with the special conditions of access. Visit Council’s website for more details.

The original wooden floors will be sanded and sealed during the closure.

Public Notices Flying fox dispersal, Clermont Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents Ecosure will commence dispersal of the flying fox colony camping in the Anzac Way section of Centenary Park: Thursday December 8 to Monday December 12 4am to 7am Dispersal methods may include the use of: •

Council intends to relocate the colony to trees on the northern side of the Lagoon. Flying foxes may land in trees in surrounding yards during the dispersal; this is

a natural movement and not the intention of Council’s dispersal. The dispersal contractor will continue to disperse the animals to the intended relocation site.

Council advises residents not to disturb or attempt selfdispersal of flying foxes. Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost.

Any disturbance of the animals during coordinated dispersal will be counterproductive.

Please secure pets during the dispersal period to avoid interaction with flying foxes, and potential stress associated with noise during dispersal.

People just a quick note today regarding happenings for the holidays.

The station will be closed for the break between Christmas and New Years as per usual. This means if you have a licence to renew or whatever either get it done beforehand or come in after the break. If for any reason you require police during this period and you are at the station use the blue phone.

Clermont Station is helping out our Middlemount counterparts with their picket lines also so getting a bit stretched. Report any crimes to 131444 and then we will get a message to follow up if required.

We have had one break in a t the small shed at the Cemetery where a small John Deere green and yellow ride on mower was stolen. Any information on this crime would be appreciated and a call to Crimestoppers on 1300333000 would be very helpful.

One traffic crash on the corner of Jellicoe and Tropic Streets on Wednesday saw an older visitor receiving a ticket for failing to stop and give way at that intersection which caused another two vehicles to be damaged.

The stop sign is quite clear on that corner, as is the line and there is a warning sign earlier on to say there is a stop sign ahead but the driver claimed not to have had any warning, you be the judge.

A successful day of court had on Monday with the magistrate handing out some particularly steep but fair fines to some of the people she had before her for the day. Again some people decided not to turn up.

Remember it is not voluntary, turn up or a warrant is issued for your arrest.

Anyway everyone have good break and enjoy having the kids around for the next 6 weeks or so.

Remember to take plenty of entertainment if you heading away on a driving holiday. Stay cool this summer which looks to be a particularly hot one.

QCOAL Foundation QCoal Foundation Scholarship QCoal Foundation is proud to partner with James Cook University (JCU) to provide the QCoal Foundation Scholarship. Established in 2015, the Scholarship aims to support students who intend to commence study at JCU, with preference given to those from rural and remote communities in Queensland.

Students preparing to study geology or science at JCU are encouraged to apply for a QCoal Foundation Scholarship to help them with their studies.

Recipients will receive $10,000 each year to help them through three years of study.

To be eligible, students: •

•

need to have completed Year 12 within two years prior to studying at JCU and preference will be given to geology or science (excluding marine biology) students. must be starting their first year of study in a Bachelor’s degree at a campus or study centre of JCU (excluding Brisbane and Singapore).

•

must be currently living in, or have relocated from, an outer regional, remote or very remote area of Queensland (check website for details)

•

be an Australian citizen or holder of an Australian Permanent visa.

A new scholarship is awarded each year and applications opened on 1 October 2016. Further information is available at www.jcu.edu.au with applications due by 31 January 2017.

Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate their interest in working in rural or regional Queensland.

Preference will be given to scholarship applicants from the Isaac and Whitsunday Council regions.

In particular Bowen, Proserpine, Collinsville, Gumlu, Queens Beach, Carmila, Clairview, Clermont, Coppabella, Dysart, Glenden, Moranbah and Nebo.

Monash Lodge stars at star making A big hello to Monash Lodge residents, staff and volunteer assistants who recently visited the Clermont Library to make woven stars for the ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ star weaving project.

Isaac Libraries have pledged to make 10,000 stars for the ‘One Million Stars’ project and Monash Lodge’s contribution is most appreciated.

Clermont Library has a variety of CD audiobooks and there’s a huge variety of digital audiobooks to choose from through Bolinda Borrowbox.

Sign up children for the Summer Reading Club

Summer has arrived and so has the Summer Reading Club. Isaac Libraries will hold the Summer Reading Club program, for school age children, from Friday, December 1, 2016 to Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

Summer Reading Club 2016 theme is ‘Heroes and Villains’ and to join in the SRC fun, children must register. SRC registration kits are available from the Clermont Library and registrations open on December 1.

Clermont Library will hold SRC sessions on Tuesday, December 13 and 20, from 10.45am to 11.45am and then from 10am to 11am on Tuesday, January 3, 10 and 17.

…and the School Holiday program….

Clermont Library’s School Holiday Programs starts on Tuesday, December 13 and continues until Thursday, January 19. Christmas craft sessions will be held on Tuesday, December 13 and 20, from 9.15am to 10.15am.

Recycled Art sessions will be held on Thursday, December 15 and 22 from 10.45am to 11.45 am, and then from 10am to 11am on Thursday, January 5, 12 and 19.

The School Holiday programs are suited to primary school age children and young teenagers, and bookings are essential.

…don’t forget – Snap Circuit Kits Clermont Library will be holding two Snap Circuit Kits sessions in the lead up to Christmas. Children, from primary school age and above, will be able to explore new tech gadgets at these sessions. The Snap Circuit Kits sessions will be held on Wednesday, 14 and 21 December, from 10.00am to 11.00am

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children.

Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane.

While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps.

This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Open gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

80’s Night This will be a quick 30mins aerobic workout inspired by the ‘Greats’ of the 80’s. It will incorporate acerbic movement, 80’s Step Aerobics and some of the old time chain dances. It’s fitness and fun in one!

Metafit This is a 30mins bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire!

Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45mins whole body workout.

This is achieved through the use of Barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

To remember with respect and dignity the more than 60 men, women and children whose lives were tragically lost during this devastating disaster.
