Gizmos and gadgets on show at Isaac Libraries Gizmos and gadgets are set to take over Dysart Library for the inaugural Isaac Libraries Tech Fest.

E-resources, apps and robotics will be on display from 10am to 2pm, Saturday October 22.

Mayor Anne Baker said Isaac Libraries have so much more to offer than just books.

“The 2016 Tech Fest is a great opportunity to try the exciting new technical resources coming to your local library.

“There’s something for all ages to enjoy like Ozobots, Osmos and Spheros for the kids and e-resources and apps for the young at heart.

“The day will also feature the FIRST Lego Robotics Teams from Moranbah, Dysart, Glenden, Middlemount and the coast.

“Teams will come face to face in a robotics challenge to show off their new tech skills learnt over the last 10 weeks.

“Coding and robotics is now an important part of the curriculum in schools from prep to year 10.

“Isaac Libraries are able to provide another avenue for kids to explore the world of coding and robotics to help develop their skills.”

The Isaac Libraries Tech Fest was made possible thanks to financial assistance from the Queensland Government through State Library of Queensland and goods and services from FIRST Australia.

Well a busy few weeks for the Clermont township and surrounds.

First we had Twin Hills. Well the rodeo and races crowd seemed to be well enough behaved and some pretty spectacular “dancing” was going on if some could call it that. Some young people got the shock of their lives when I told them they were dancing to their parent’s music. Apparently it’s all been remixed and now it sounds a whole way better than it used to in the olden days. One young 15yr old lad was snagged out of the bar for drinking, but other than that a lot of families together were enjoying themselves. If it were not for the dust it would have been a pleasurable experience overall, but hey I have been told it can’t be Twin Hills without it. Maybe next year run the water truck right over the dance floor between songs!!

The Clermont races saw a reduced crowd and although some people enjoyed themselves a lot, there was no scuffles or punch ups on anywhere. The pub crowd later was well behaved and although there were some ‘Home and Away’ style dramas with some couples nothing untoward eventuated. Lots of random breath tests did not elicit any drink drivers which believe it or not I am very happy about.

Speaking of drink drivers one clown during the week, and I mean clown, decided it would be a good idea to run around town with a couple of idiots in the back of the ute after a good day on the drink. Thank you to the many people who called it in. A short time later he was sitting in the police station blaming everyone else for his issues. Thankfully he has now seen the light

and made another town his home but not after being charged with a fair few offences which he will face when he appears before the magistrate on December 5. Incidentally he decided not to provide a specimen of breath for analysis as required at the police station.

Big mistake as that automatically qualifies you for the biggest penalty allowable, like I said, CLOWN. Can I just have everyone do me one favour. Check the due dates again on your driver’s licence, your registration and your weapons licence. I am getting sick of pulling up people who have let everything lapse. It is not anyone else’s fault but your own. If you don’t pay your phone bill on time it gets cut off, but you remember to check it. Do the same with your licences and registration. If you have outstanding fines and have done nothing about them, chances are you are suspended from driving. This means you have to contact SPER and fix it up, before you drive around.

If you drive around knowing you are suspended you will be caught, charged with suspended driving and possibly have your car impounded. It is much easier to make that phone call.

Finally a good holiday period around here. Touch wood no bad incidents or crashes. Can I please just remind everyone to be patient with the roadworks.

Just like the home renovation shows I am sure we should end up with a better looking product - fingers crossed.

Clermont organisation awarded Australia Post community grant A local community organisation from Clermont has been awarded $9,204 as part of Australia Post’s 2016 Our Neighbourhood Community Grants program, for connecting people in their local community and helping to build a more inclusive, connected society.

Belyando Enterprise Network was selected for ‘Modernising the bush telegraph - upskilling to digitally connect rural and remote Queensland’ which will deliver workshops, webinars and mentoring programs with digital experts to small businesses and community organisations in rural and remote Queensland, who have experienced financial hardship due to drought and downturn in the mining sector.

“We’re so thrilled to be one of the recipients of Australia Post’s Our Neighbourhood Community Grants. This funding will help us to to help build digital skills and capabilities within small businesses and community organisations struggling due to to financial hardship following drought and downturn in the mining sector.

Gaining these new digital skills will empower talented people in rural and remote areas to develop micro-businesses to generate new income streams to increase financial security for their families.

As an example, generating off-farm income will make staying on the family farm more viable, contributing to a sustainable agricultural industry and to creating vibrant and sustainable rural communities,” said Belyando Enterprise Network Enterprise Facilitator, Helen Newell.

Australia Post Managing Director and Group CEO, Ahmed Fahour, said the Our Neighbourhood Community Grants program was created to recognise the important role smaller charities and community groups play in bringing people together and helping local communities thrive.

“At Australia Post, we believe in the power of communities. We understand the importance of local projects and the positive difference they make in their communities. We launched the Our Neighbourhood Community Grants to focus on supporting smaller charities and local groups that often get overlooked for funding elsewhere.

“Since its inception in 2013, we’ve been inspired by the efforts of hundreds of community groups who work hard to build lasting connections within their communities and neighbourhoods.

“We heartily congratulate all of this year’s successful applicants including Belyando Enterprise Network for their work in connecting people and for the positive impact they’re creating in their local community.”

In 2016, Our Neighbourhood Community Grants were awarded to 72 community organisations and projects nationwide that focus on the following areas: •

Digital Capability: projects that build digital skills for individuals and the wider community

Clermont and District Education Group Call for applications The Clermont and District Education Group (CDEG) has opened its 2017 application round for financial assistance for Clermont youth.

Applications close 31 October 2016.

Writing workshop with Sandy Curtis contributed by Heather Garside The Central Highlands Writers’ Group is presenting a workshop with multi-published Bundaberg author, Sandy Curtis.

Sandy Curtis has published around a dozen books and specialises in romantic suspense, women’s fiction and contemporary romance.

The workshop will be held at Wally McKenzie House at the Emerald Showgrounds on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd October, from 8:45am to 5pm each day.

One Million Stars to End Violence Isaac Libraries will host star weaving work stations between August 2016 - July 2017. Everyone from individuals to community groups are invited to join the project and help weave stars.

Bag a book bargain

Explore the technical side to the library at the inaugural Isaac Libraries Tech Fest being held at the Dysart Library on Saturday October 22 from 10am to 2pm.

Have you had a browse through the books in the Clermont Library Book Sale?

Come and explore everything from e-resources and apps to the library’s great gadgets, Ozobots, Osmos, Sphero SPRK+ and Squishy Circuits.

Watch the Lego Robotics teams showcase their skills in the First Lego Robotics Challenge.

Most of the books and items on sale are preloved library books in good condition and paperbacks, magazines and CDs are priced at $1, hardbacks and DVDs cost $2 or buy a bag of books for $12.

Stock is constantly being added to the sale shelves.

National Water Week colouring-in competition Hey kids!

There is still one more week to get your entry in for the Isaac Regional Council’s National Water Week colouring-in competition. Entry forms can be collected from the Clermont Library. Completed entries need to be returned to the library by 4pm, Friday October 21.

The competition is open to children aged up to 13 yearsold and is divided into four age categories.

National Water Week will be celebrated from October 16 – 22.

‘First 5 Forever’ photography competition Enter the First 5 Forever sing, talk, play, read photo competition for your chance to win great prizes including one of three story play book packs and two $200 Coles Myer vouchers. For your chance to win, simply take a happy snap of a First 5 Forever moment with a child (aged zero to five) talking, singing, playing or reading with a special adult in their life.

Gather friends and weave a star Get a group of friends together or come on your own to the Clermont Library and join in the ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ star weaving project.

We have a star weaving station set up for people to drop in anytime during opening hours to weave a star from ribbon.

Isaac’s goal is to weave 10,000 stars to contribute to the display at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families?

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children.

Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

There are many benefits of Yoga, this class is suitable for pregnant women, screening will be conducted prior to participation. BOOKINGS FOR YOGA ARE ESSENTIAL. $16.50 for casuals. $6.60 for children up to 14 years. Power Yoga is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.

SPIN/Revolution Great music and a fantastic calorie burning hour of indoor cycling. You’ll learn correct technique for improved performance and have fun cycling.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy.

It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

XT - THUMP boxing It’s a nice way to start your day. This class incorporates 10mins of circuit cardio, 10mins strength training and 20mins thump boxing. A fully functional total body workout that burns, burns, burns.

80’s Night This will be a quick 30mins aerobic workout inspired by the ‘Greats’ of the 80’s. It will incorporate acerbic movement, 80’s Step Aerobics and some of the old time chain dances.

It’s fitness and fun in one!

Open gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Metafit This is a 30mins bodyweight training system that gets results!

It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire!

Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45mins whole body workout.

This is achieved through the use of Barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

We shoot on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. Arrive at range at 9.30am and commence shooting at 10am.

Netball fans rejoice! Mixed netball is starting soon We are now taking nominations for Clermont Senior Netball Association’s mixed netball competition.

The season will commence on November 1 and run through to March 14 2017 (with a three week break over the Christmas / New Year period).

It is cheap to play - just $5 per player per game.

All levels of netball experience are encouraged to join in our friendly competition. If you don’t have a team but still want to play, we are happy to find a team for you.

Nominations close on October 25.
