Scallywag pirates storm Isaac libraries Little pirate lassies and scallywags had a storm of swashbuckling fun with the Isaac Library crew last week, as part of International Talk Like a Pirate Day celebrations.

Talk Like a Pirate Day aims to raise awareness of the impact childhood cancer has on families, and fundraises for the not-for-profit organisation, Childhood Cancer Support.

With all things themed for ‘Pirate Week’ there was plenty of imaginative play and educational activities to interest the most mischievous of pirates.

Isaac libraries are now running their September school holiday program.

Parents and carers are encouraged to bring children along to enjoy a number of new online resources and programmed activities suitable for all ages.

FUZZBOOK contributed by The Sarge Well another interesting week around the traps of Clermont.

I have had a lot of positive feedback about the column once again being in the Rag so enjoy it and stay informed.

The weekend saw a couple of drink drivers being caught in the area. The dry weather must have gotten one young bloke as he decided to have a few drinks on the drive home from work, which was a long way. Anyway he was picked up in town getting some resupplies and will be appearing at the next court date. The other young fellow was in a group of three on the road to the dam. Now you know young fellas are up to no good when they have a ute backed up to a tree with a snatch strap on it, the excuse, need firewood as apparently there was none laying on the ground. Anyway the driver had decided before their enterprise to have a few rums and was put through for drink driving and will be appearing at the November court session. The message here is don’t drink and drive. Your life and the lives of everyone else on the road is at risk not to mention your job and livelihood. However one tree was protected and that is important!

Plenty of speeders on the highway with the holiday season starting. I know what it is like to have the kids in the car for hours on end and you just want to get there, but please avoid the temptation to speed and stay safe on the roads. Try and take plenty for the kids to do such as reading material, IPads, phones, games. Do not rely on I spy with my little eye because at the moment there is not a whole lot on the side of the road except for the unfortunate wildlife that have succumbed to vehicles and that game gets old real quick.

Interesting dress ups on the weekend walking around the streets. For a moment I thought I had backup with Wonder woman (minus the bangles) who incidentally could not find her invisible car, batman, green lantern and a group of turtles but it turned out to be just a birthday party. The weekends have been a bit slow lately but with Twin Hills next weekend it should liven up a bit. Hope everyone has a good time and a safe drive between town and there. We of course will be out and about so beware. Incidentally some cattle have been reported around the Belyando River area to the west. The cattle have gone missing over a long period of time but if anyone has any information please phone it through to us here at the station or Crimestoppers.

Finally just a quick word about mobile phones. The rate at which people are losing them or misplacing them in town is alarming. If you are going to take the phone out with you, and you plan on having a tipple, secure the phone at all times. The phone is expensive so you don’t need to be leaving it on the bar or a table if you get called away. People have been taking them and they are valuable. Once again you would not leave the hundreds of dollars they are worth sitting on the table in full view.

Gear lined up for auction Bidders can beat the crowds and view the goods before Isaac Regional Council’s Fleet and Plant auction in Clermont on Wednesday October 7 from 10am.

The auction resulted from surplus items identified as part of a Council review to ensure its fleet and plant pool was costeffective and efficient in delivering core programs and services.

NASCO Auctioneer Chris Goscomb said around 200 lots will go under the hammer from cars, utes, boats and trailers to tractors, loaders, rollers, mowers and much more.

Council made the move to host the auction in the region so local residents, businesses, community groups, organisations and producers would have the opportunity to buy and benefit.

It’s a mostly unreserved auction and we’re expecting a huge turnout on the day.”

Award a worthy Aussie Nominations are being sought for the Isaac region’s 2016 Australia Day Awards.

Mayor Anne Baker said Council has an easy new nomination form suitable for everyone.

“I hope to encourage more nominations to highlight outstanding local people from across the region,” she said.

“Age is no barrier and we encourage award nominees from youth to our senior citizens,” she said.

“Nominees can be from all walks of life but one thing is always consistent, they enrich their community or achieve notable ambitions.”

“We have three regional awards and local achievement medallions across sport, culture and achievement for individuals and groups. I also am honoured to choose a recipient for the Mayor’s award in each community.”

“This will provide a worthy and outstanding young person with means to continue making a difference, further their experience, and to inspire others,” said Mayor Baker Australia Day Award regional awards include Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year.

Local award categories include group or individual Achievement Medallions for sport, cultural or achievement from each township; and the Mayor’s Award.

Health Matters contributed by Jackie Martin - Clermont MPHS Health Promotions Officer While R U OK day was a few weeks ago, it is definitely worth discussing, as the evidence is overwhelmingly supportive of this simple strategy.

•

Asking R U OK? You’ve got what it takes If your gut says something’s not quite right with someone, chances are that they might need a bit of extra support from the people around them. They might be acting a bit differently, seem to have a lot on their plate, or simply aren’t themselves.

Don’t ignore those signs but instead take some time to start a conversation.

Dealing with denial • If they deny the problem, don’t criticise them. Acknowledge they’re not ready to talk.

One of the great things about asking “are you ok?” is you don’t have to know the answers to a mate’s problems. Nor do you have to be ok yourself. Or feel particularly strong. As long as you feel up to listening, not judging and just talking through stuff you have found useful in the past, you’ve everything it takes to have a meaningful conversation to support a mate in need.

The below isn’t a script – they’re tips to help you ask from the heart.

Getting ready to start a conversation

Be ready • Are you in a good headspace?

Mention specific things that have made you concerned for them, like “I’ve noticed that you seem really tired recently” or “You seem less chatty than usual. How are you going?”

•

Avoid a confrontation.

•

Examples of how you could respond to their denial include “It’s ok that you don’t want to talk about it but please call me when you’re ready to chat” or “Is there someone else you’d rather talk to?”

•

Tell them you’re still concerned about changes in their behaviour and you care about them.

•

Ask if you can enquire again next week if there’s no improvement.

Does someone need expert help?

• If someone says they’re thinking about suicide, it’s important you take it seriously.

•

Tell them that you care about them and you want to help.

Don’t become agitated, angry or upset.

•

Explain that thoughts of suicide are common and don’t have to be acted upon.

Be prepared • Do you understand that a difficult conversation might happen and you won’t have the answers?

•

Ask if they’ve begun to take steps to end their life. If they have, it’s very important that you don’t leave them alone and do not use guilt or threats.

•

•

Even if someone says they haven’t made a plan to take their own life, you still need to take it seriously.

•

For confidential advice and support call a crisis support line – such as Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467.

•

If you think that someone’s life is in immediate danger call 000 (Australia only) and stay with them until help arrives.

•

Are you willing to genuinely listen?

•

Can you give as much time as needed?

Do you understand that talking about personal struggles can be difficult and they might get embarrassed, even angry?

Pick your moment • Have you chosen somewhere relatively private and comfy?

•

What time will be good for them to chat?

•

If they can’t talk when you approach them, ask them for a better time to come back

Step One: Ask R U OK? • Be relaxed.

•

Help them open up by asking questions like “How you going?” or “What’s been happening?” or “How you travelling?

Fallen heroes at the forefront of National Police Remembrance Day Australian police officers and the communities they serve will gather next week to commemorate the fallen on National Police Remembrance Day, September 29.

Moranbah Police will again be hosting an official service at 10am in the St Francis Anglican Church, with an invitation extended to all residents and officers from the western Isaac region.

Local Senior Sergeant Michael Bailey said he hopes to see strong community support for the important occasion.

“National Police Remembrance Day is a significant day to reflect on each individual police service and remember those officers killed on duty or as a result of their duties,” he said.

“It provides an opportunity to honour and remember all police who have given their lives serving the Australian and Southwest Pacific communities.”

Mayor Anne Baker said she is honoured to continue the tradition of laying a wreath at this year’s service.

“Whether in regional communities like ours, or large city centres, police officers put themselves at risk daily in order to keep us safe,” she said.

“I am proud to be attending Moranbah’s service to pay my respects not only to fallen and injured officers, but to those who continue to serve and protect our communities.”

Officers and residents from Moranbah, Nebo, Dysart, Middlemount, Clermont, Glenden and surrounding areas are invited to attend the service.

Moranbah’s National Police Remembrance Day service will be held on September 29, 10am at St Francis Anglican Church.

The Isaac Regional Council’s Environmental Team has produced several information flyers about flying foxes, including flying foxes camps in residential areas, and copies of the flyers are available at the Clermont Library.

Children’s holiday activities The Clermont Library will be holding children’s holiday activities for primary school-age children during the September/October school holidays. Sessions will be held on Tuesday September, 29 and Thursday October 1 from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Get into in2Era In2Era is a free library e-resource available through the Isaac Libraries link on the Isaac Regional Council’s webpage.

In2Era is a database of picture and Early Literacy Books online, aimed at children aged three to 10 years. In2Era has more than 200 titles with Australian narration and children can listen to the story, read along with the narrator and create storyboard pictures using the books own characters and themes.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS TRX Suspension Training Every exercise builds true functional strength and improves flexibility, balance and core stability, as is required both in sport and in life. Intermediate sessions are higher intensity workouts as basics should be well ingrained in participants.

Intermediate Monday, Friday and Saturdays.

Rip Group Rx A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light weights.

1 hour in duration. Bring towel and water bottle! $15.00 casual/free for members. Rip Express is a 45min major muscle group workout.

THUMP boxing for fitness 1 hour free for members, Beginners L1 run Wednesday nights 6pm. A pair of inners to be worn under gloves can be purchased for $5 before class. L2 and L3 bookings only! Boxing equipment provided for both classes. $15 per class, free for gym members.

Junior mixed beach volleyball Skill and ability development with view to start fixtures term 4. Monday’s 5.30pm, 8-15 ears, $6 per child poer week. Registration fee $15.

Mixed beach volleyball fixtures Season 2 draw. 6.30pm August to December.

Kids Core (AXIS) 1/2 hour functional body weight resistance class for 8-14 year olds.

Improves core and whole body strength. $6.00 per child. Class set to music.

Indoor Volleyball Fixtures Season 2 draw runs Thursday nights throughout Term 3 and 4 start time 6.30pm. Mixed teams.

Tuesday Ladies Volleyball Fixtures Season 2 runs July to December. New players welcome. Game start times 9.15am and 10.15am.

Yoga A class for everyone! For ages 5 and up to 90 or more. You will learn breathing exercises and positions that can help improve arthritic symptoms, insomnia,

blood pressure, mood and aid with relaxation and flexibility. There are many benefits of Yoga, this class is suitable for pregnant women, screening will be conducted prior to participation.

Bookings for Yoga are essential. $15 for casuals. $6 for children up to 14 years.

Power Yoga is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.

Pilates- Level 1 Matwork 45 mins learn the fundamentals of pilates in a low impact class for good posture, strength for pelvic floor, core and general toning.

Mats required.

Pregnancy Pilates A low impact pilates class which focuses on pelvic floor, posture and general strength and well being for pregnant ladies who have been cleared to exercise during their pregnancy.

Bookings essential.

SPIN/Revolution Great music and a fantastic calorie burning hour of indoor cycling. You’ll learn correct technique for improved performance and have fun cycling.

Bookings essential. Revolution Express is a half hour session being added to the program in November all indoor cycling classes are moderate to high intensity classes.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane.

While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas.

Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Workout Of the Day (WOD) This is a board based program, working TO the principles of H.I.I.T where you can come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T? High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open Gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets Lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRIT This is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development.

THUMP Boxing is a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy systems and improves your ability to use oxygen, helping you to work harder for longer and burn fat in the process.
