Translations: A Group Project

Translations What happens when you are not physically making something yourself, but have to ‘plant’ your thoughts into somebody elses’ head and hands? Language and the preciseness – or openness– of your brief affects how the other person preceives what you’re saying. Leaving things open is a risk that is sometimes worth taking, as the unexpected that emerges from the combination of two different talents can lead to great things: total control is not always the most interesting. The art is to know what to control and when to let go - this is experience. 1.Everyone in the group provides a design brief for an everyday household object, text only. The brief is given to another student in the group. 2.This second student makes a 2-D representation (no text) based on the text- and does not consult the writer of the text verbally. 3.The sketch is given to a third student, who makes a 3-D representation of the 2-D sketch, based only on that, not on the text. 4. A fourth student takes a picture of it that represents the object well, and wrotes a text about it- without consulting any of the output from the previous stages.

A perforated nozzle that is used to distribute water over a large solid angle. Usually located overhead in the bathroom, it is useful because less water can be used to wet the same area. Adjustments can be made in the spray patterns depending on the amount and placement of the perforations.

3x2 3 x 2 is a versatile led lamp inspired by industrial and craft aesthetics. Due to its design, it can be integrated into many home, office and urban spaces working as table, floor, wall or ceiling lamp. The lamps consist of three wooden hand-turned tubes that are interspersed with two other steel ones in an exciting composition, which gets very stable by a clever distribution of the weight.

One is very tall and the other one is very short. They always work together. The tallest is very thin but very hard and it is always made by two opposite materials. It has a hard start-point and a large flexible end-point. The shortest is made by a very hard material but it has a small part that has to be very very thin, almost sharp but it’s better if it is soft. The shortest follows the longest. They do a dirty job together.

Gone With The Dust Everything has become disposable in this world, like those paper cups lying around everywhere in the masters space. It is almost as if washing cups became ‘irrelevant.’ What happened to our intimacy with our daily objects? Since when did we become disposable? Gone with the Dust portrays and deflates the contemporary consumer’s disposable mindset, through one of the household products that has “yet” not become disposable - a dustpan. If the consumer prefers to buy the roll of paper towels over a reusable cotton wash clothes, this paper-made dustpan has a good shot as well.

My daily household object is made of two cylinder shaped container arranged vertically on top of one another. Both containers are made of heat resistant material and connected to each other through a winding with a 10cm diameter and a height of 1cm. The winding has a draft of 3°. In the area of the connection is a valve located which allows liquid and steam to go from the lower cylinder in the upper cylinder. Also the location or proportion of the valve should allow liquid to stay in the upper cylinder to a certain amount. Located in the same area in the lower cylinder and attached to the valve there is a container for small grain material. This container keeps the small grain material right next to the valve allowing liquid to pass through the material and the valve in the upper cylinder. The lower cylinder has a hight of 10cm and a diameter of 12cm at the lower end and 11cm on the top end. ‘The cylinder on top of the other, has a height of 14cm and a diameter of 11cm on both ends. The cladding of both cylinder container is 3mm. The top cylinder is open on top and has a lid and a muzzle in a harmonic shape to the minimalist smooth shape of the rest of this object. Yet the object has not a steam punk look rather more a porcelain look of a classic teepot. It is build to fit on a cooking plate.

My ‘daily household object’ is an hourglass-looking pot that can be hung and be rotated for the next generation. The soil, or those alternatives, will fill up the upper part of an object and eventually go down to the lower as the soil is soaked with liquid substances. This object is made of a clear material that will expose what goes down inside of it. In order to rotate and to revitalize those ‘living organisms’, the object will have a cover that will block the soil from the bottom. With that being said, you only need one cover, as you can take it off and re-attach it after the rotation. This hourglass-looking object has a maximum diameter of 15 cm and a min. of 2 cm in the middle. This middle diameter has to enable the soil to go through when moist. Its height is 25cm. The overall object will be surrounded by a wooden frame that will not only allow the hourglass to rotate, but will also give the essence of aesthetic value.

Times Still Life People are temporal subjects with orientation to time and disciplined by time. Memory is subjective, a personal construction made up of temporal fragments. Objects can play a role in this constructive process of remembrance and can bring back past moments. A snow-globe, symbolic of childhood, is trapped inside the form of time, reminiscent of a sand-clock. The object allows the possibility to play with memory, whilst remembering a child’s play. Yet this play is also a constant reminder of time’s effects, and it locks the memory inside a frame: forever an irrecuperable past. Humanity has always counted time. The Greek god Khronos is known as the father of time. With the Romans, it became the god of human time. Regarded by the Greeks as destructive, we conceive a time which devours its children. A sand-clock / snow-globe symbolises the memory of a childhood. A past devoured by time.

My household object waits at me everyday down the bed. It is the first thing I used when I arrived home and I just stop using them before going out again. I have different ones for winter and for summer. The winter ones are soft, warm, lightweight and they make me feel comfortable. I guess is the object that really makes me feel at home. When I travel, I try to bring them with me. I missed my winter ones (This time there was no space in the luggage for them). They look like my grandmother’s, not much design at all, or let’s say classic style. Dark colour and semi close, just how I like them. There are countries that do not use them, they must have very clean houses. Next time I go home I will bring them back with me. I need them!

Subject: Mirror Brief: -Who can really answer who I am? -Is it real image, we see ourselves reflect on the mirror? -What is difference between the real object and an image of object reflects on the mirror? The mirror seems show us the real image such as the movement of object (time) and the depth of space (space). However, it shows the reversed images so it is hard to say it’s real. We can see right image through photography but this is also hard to say it’s real. Because the image we see on the photograph is a paused image. We can’t see the movement of object (time) in there. The irony is we can’t see our appearance ourselves only other can see each other’s appearances. Design brief: I’m thinking of the mirror which divides three different mirrors, each of mirror shows different image from same object in the middle.

Mirror 2: the twin mirror Double layered mirror, front layer is made by half mirror and second is display screen and video cam. So, screen image and reflecting im age can be overlapped together. Two images have to be reversed each other. Mirror 3: the third lie Only Screen, it shows image from the video cam in mirror 1. Image would be totally opposite side and reversed image. Because of image is taken from opposite side (from mirror 1). Proposal: What is established a standard between the lie and the truth, between the fiction and the fact. I’d like to question this issue through mirror which we believe it is always show real.

Three Eyes The object is a white rectangular box. The front side is divided in three equal columns: the first column from the left is covered with a mirrored material and it has a camera lens right on its middle; the central column has no mirror covering, there is a camera lens in the middle and a blue light glowing from behind that shows a picture; the last column on the right is covered with a mirror material and has an hole in the middle. Inside each of the two external columns, there is a mirror tilted in a way to reflect any object in front of the other column. In front of the object there is another object, and it is the same that appears in the central column.

Has all to run after a control of the aestheticism we can it sometimes deceives of tools.

Untitled It is a multi-layer surface made by two layer of cardbord and one layer of polystirol in between. On one side are drew the outlines of several differents object, like a coffe cup, a hammer, a gun, a watch, a light bulb, etc etc‌ Some of these objects are inserted between the three layers and they come out from the flat surface on both side. The piece’s outline is made according to the shape of the objects that are drewn on it. Just one of the six objects that are inside the surface miss leaving an hole on the surface. It could be used as an bag handle and the final object looks like a bag. In my opinion, thinking in a functional and logical way the choosen materials are not appropriate for a bag because of theirs characteristics and theirs appearence but at he same time I found intersting the concept behind the object. It could be a bag but could be also the starting point to develop a different tray. thinking the objects as a bag is also intersting think about what and how should we show to the people and what are we are carryng down with us. Key-words: to show - to hide visible - invisible tangible - intangible 3D - 2D

Always fixed somewhere, the lock, the bolt, the handle, surround her to protect our secrets, our intimacy. Her work is mechanical, under the action of the hand it leans over and opens us the way, it is always present, the transition between our areas, the witness of our passing. We never give enough attention to this little sensual object whose presence may become identity and speak about our desires, our resources, our tastes. She does not loose her axis and remains static when I’m not here. Sophisticated and elegant, she is thin and her lines rushed for more curl. “When we are together, we are not small anymore.” Pay attention to small and tiny industrial daily products, which are easily thrown away. When they are thrown away, they become a bunch of trash but when they are gathered, they become useful material. For example, shining something or contain something… If they can be stacked or connected each other to form a bigger shape, they will transform to new objects. For example, wine cork, bottle cap (plastic, aluminum, rubber...), cable tie, straw, used tooth brush, etc…whatever you can find aroud your daily life. It can be remake to a good and useful product. Then, they are not any more trash.
