UNIT 10 – THE DATING GAME

a) Be going to vs present continuous to talk about the future 1) When we talk about an INTENTION to do something in the future, although no definite arrangement has been made, we prefer going to rather than the present continuous (2) To emphasise the fact that we are talking about a DEFINITE ARRANGEMENT we prefer the present continuous. I have put the words emphasise and prefer in red, because I think they show the writer is trying to say that these are tendencies, not hard-and-fast rules. So if you are talking about an intention rather than an arrangement, you're more likely to say "going to", but the present continuous isn't ruled out; and if you are talking about an arrangement rather than an intention, you're more likely to use the present continuous but "going to" isn't ruled out. http://moodle.citylit.ac.uk/file.php/1/Study%20skills%20work %20sheets/grammar/intermediate/Microsoft%20Word%20%201.13%20FUTURE%20action%20-%20%20Present%20continuous %20Exercises.pdf

b) Be going to: Prediction base don evidence We often use going to to make a prediction about the future. Our prediction is based on evidence. We are saying what seems sure to happen. Here are some examples: • The sky is very black. It is going to snow. • It's 8.30! You're going to miss the train! • I crashed the company car. My boss isn't going to be very happy! In these examples, the present situation (black sky/the time/damaged car) gives us a good idea of what is going to happen.
