TANK OF GAS BRING YOUR CAMERA!
We are all visual beings and each one of us “SEES” something different. Its 4:46am on a Saturday morning. You feel the need for adventure and you’re usual summer getaway is NOT going to happen, you fill up the gas tank, grab your camera, and with thoughts of hosting the next Travelocity commercial alongside the Gnome, you start to head…North? South? East? West? Either way, Arizona has some interesting places to see and photograph. There are the usual suspects, Grand Canyon, Sedona, etc. But OUR RESIDENT PRO PHOTOGRAPHERS like to find the obscure. Here are just a few of the locations our pro photographers have packed their bags, loaded up their camera(s), and run off to in Arizona.

What’s Your
NORTH:
WINDOW ROCK
In this location, one word comes to mind, Mystic. Its ceremonial name means Earths Center, and known as Wind through the Rocks, not only will you want to photograph one of the natural wonders of the Navajo Nation, but you’ll feel the power of the Earth all around you in this rustic colored arena. If you look into surrounding areas you’ll find pieces of artifacts to get those all-important close up angles.
SOUTH:
WHY AND PATAGONIA (yes we said 2, because it was hard to choose)
Why? Because we said so, that’s WHY. Situated at the intersection of routes 85 and 86 is the community originally named “Y”. Arizona Law at the time required all settlements to have 3 letters in their name. Why? We’re not sure, but we do know that if you find yourself in this community near the Mexican border, make sure you check out the Organ Pipe National forest. If you want something a little more reminiscent of Italy, then it’s off to:
PATAGONIA: Of course, that means vineyards. Oh, and vineyards, and did we mention VINEYARDS? Ok, we got stuck there but at least we had a reason, we were thirsty.
WEST:
PARKER/BILL WILLIAMS RIVER
Colorado River Indian Tribes Reservation, or as some of you know it, Parker Strip a 16 mile stretch of River that has some of the most exciting water sports in the world. If you don’t catch a fast moving speedboat, you’ll find cat-tailed filled marsh long the Bill Williams River (it runs into the Colorado). That’s a secret location “we” don’t normally share. It is one of the last remaining natural cottonwood/willow forests, creating a unique ecosystem and providing one of the few places you can stand and look at a cactus, a cattail stand, and a cottonwood tree together. Sunsets over the river are easy to catch, for a challenge, time your shot so it drops down as a water skier glides by.
EAST:
All the rest of our beautiful state:
Greer, Overgaard, Springerville, St. Johns etc. that need our help. So if you head East on a Tank Of Gas, take along some necessities to help the residents get back on their feet, and I’m sure you’ll find a beautiful photograph in all of it.

MT. LEMMON
In this location, one word comes to mind, Mystic. Located in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson. At 9,200 feet you’ll pass through 7 life zones consisting of breathtaking vistas, outlandish rock scapes, forests and deep canyons. It starts at the lower sonoran life zone and ends in the high forests of the Canadian zone. In the winter, take your skis.

for over 256 species of birds and 15 species of hummingbirds, you’ll spend more than a day and several SD cards later photographing. With the ability to traverse four life zones, you’ll find flora and fauna that will make you bust out the tent and stay.
OUT: Go ahead, be RISKIER, and go OUT on a limb, or in this case, OUT on a ledge, and try repelling and canyoneering. Ahwatukee likes its “ing’s”, hiking, biking, etc.…and like us, 360 Adventures has a passion for creating adventures, only there’s’ is in the OUTdoor arena. After speaking with Tina, one of the owners, who by the way was extremely cordial to speak with us on a holiday, and informed us that canyoneering can be an amazing adventure as long as you have a guide. They get called OUT on rescue missions but would rather lead the way from the start. For this one, bring a rugged camera, and send us a picture of Brian, he’s OUT there somewhere!

Email me and I’ll send you a list. • Stop at locations that are well lit and always walk with someone, especially if they know the way. • Plan ahead to refuel and know where the next gas station is. • Be aware of strangers/predators that ask directions or stop you for questions. • When fueling your vehicle, pay for the gas at the pump with a credit card, and stay with your vehicle. • Always be aware of your surroundings, know the major cross streets or landmarks. • Always lock your vehicle, even if you’re inside.
the outside (rather than a hallway), see if you can get a room overlooking an interior courtyard instead of a parking lot. Don't let the front desk attendant publicize your room number. If he or she announces it out loud when giving you your key, ask for a different room. When you leave your room, hang the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door and leave your television or radio on. And don’t leave your “Maid Service” sign on the door at anytime. This is an invite to thieves. Using common sense will save you and your property from an uninvited guest. Don’t flash your cash or jewelry; keep all your doors and windows locked with all available locking devices. And if someone knocks on your door, don’t be so quick to answer. Call the front desk first to verify who the person is on the other side of the door.

"Put some FUN in your photography. It’s all about the fun and changing the way you look at things". Art Holeman-Pro Photographer If you’re like me, you want to find THAT ONE THING that stands out or is different. You’ve been taking pictures of the same things, or other things that are the same exact things and not feeling the creative freedom to find new things. You get into a rut…it goes like this…see something ‘really cool”, grab camera, point and shoot, see result and say, “oh ___that’s not what I wanted”. And instead of analyzing or contemplating what you want from the shot or what you don’t want. One of the problems may be that you’re stationary. In the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Sundance is supposed to shoot a can. He’s handed a gun, and told ok, shoot the can. When he shoots, he misses it. Butch says, I thought you were a good shot. Sundance says: “can I move now”? He proceeds to bounce to the ground, roll and fire at the can hitting it dead center 3 times. To get the shot,

What makes a restaurant
"Guy Centric"? by Chef Laura Slama
Is it the menu, the décor, the name? And
can a male oriented establishment appeal to women as well? Those questions, among others, were swirling inside my head as I walked into the The Public House Garage the other evening, meeting up with three male friends, two of which, I learned, could qualify as professional eaters.
Perusing the menu, it was quickly apparent that I was, indeed in Man Land. Beef, Chicken, Pork, Chicken, Beef, Chicken, Chicken, did I mention Chicken? If you’re protein deprived, this is the place for you. But to be clear, there really was something for everyone on the broad menu, and with a fairly aggressive happy hour offering, you could create a meal that’s satisfying to the palate and easy on the wallet. Not a bad combination in our current economic times. We were greeted quickly by Liana, our server, who gave us the rundown on the happy hour specials and was easily cajoled into sharing her favorite menu items. Mental notes made, and $5 (normally $12) glass of wine in hand, we loosened our belts and began our journey.

so much better with a more generous bath in the housemade bbq sauce.
My request for additional sauce was quickly
filled, turning my slider into a messy home run. However, the pizza margherita could have been so much more with a true margherita sauce (think crushed whole tomatoes cooked with minced onions, garlic and oregano, finished with fresh basil), as opposed to tomato slices over melted mozzarella. Chef’s note - more sauce, less cheese, and the great crust it was served on would be given its due. For dinner, we hit every part of the barnyard. The carne asada was served “deconstructed” – tortillas, black beans, shredded cabbage and pico de gallo and did not fail to please. My NY Strip was a perfect medium rare all the way through.
Dessert included another trip to the deep fryer – the County Fair Twinkie is, you guessed it, a deep fried Twinkie (two actually) drizzled with chocolate sauce. The second was a caramel apple chimichanga served with ice cream. My professional eaters had no problem making quick work of them both. The Public House Garage is not a sports bar – not by my definition. While there are several well-placed televisions, there is no sporting paraphernalia adorning the walls but items more reminiscent of garages from days of yore. It’s open, airy and comfortable. The service was great, the food up to par, and the sweet potato fries …. well, you already know. Guy-centric, female friendly - I’d say that equals a win-win.
The butterflied pork chop with a caramelized apple and onion molasses had great flavor, though slightly overcooked. The only real failure on these last two plates was the green beans. I’ve seen army fatigues in a more vibrant green, and it just made me sad, such is my love for vegetables. But the dish that created the most entrée envy at the table was the honey chicken breast baked sandwich. Liana said from the start it was her absolute favorite and would eat it every day if given the chance. The honey and mustard flavors, in conjunction with the spice blend, gave this sandwich great flavor, and the dough it was baked in was just the right crusty, flaky, chewy to drive its culinary point home. And I haven’t even told you the best part of that dish – for me, anyway….. Anyone who has ever attended one of my cooking classes or events, or seen one of my television segments where the menu includes sweet potatoes, knows that I am a sucker for the tuberous root. And while I pride

The look is easy to replicate. For design inspiration, turn to the past. Research old magazines and catalogs online or at the library. Raid your Grandma’s house, hit the antique stores and check out Ebay. True retro is bold, bright and streamlined. There are no rules to follow and you can mix and match decades or stick to one period. All you need is a bit of research and a passion for the past.
Here are a few Retro tips to take you back in time. Floor and Furnishings • Streamlined and clean • Materials used: formica, plastics, chrome and pine • Shag carpet, bean bags and blow up furniture (remember that!)
Color ~ Color ~ Color • Everywhere in any combination on everything! • Color your walls, furnishings and even appliances (which is making a huge comeback)
Accessories • Look for at antique stores • Clocks in every room and the odder the shape and size the better (I have a great connection for you on this…wink, wink) • Patterns and lots of them! The quirkier the better • Don’t forget your incense sticks!

How to Decorate your Car That’s right…your CAR! Like many others, I spend more time in my car than at home. It’s my transportation sure, but it’s also often my office, showroom, phone conferencing center and restaurant. It’s one of my “living spaces”. So of course I want it to look and feel good. Besides the fact there are a few wood and granite samples sliding around my cargo space and a water bottle graveyard on the backseat floor, I try to keep the rest of it fairly organized and, well…pretty.

second GLANCE
SHORT ON
style? by Valentino Boucheron
In countries where shorts for women are restricted in public, I have decided that my first article will be to start a full on FASHION MOVE in Ahwatukee. Shorts for night wear! After spending some time people watching, I have found that women in long pants are virtually non-existent, and the Arizona heat is partly responsible. On the flip side, it’s the look and feel of cotton that is the fabric of your new evening wear. Follow the trendy ways to wear them this summer, for our neck of the woods, means until November. Wear them for spinning, biking, shopping, going to the park or out to dinner. STYLES FOR ALL OCCASIONS ARE: DENIM SHORTS, IT SUITS YOUR THIGHS AND LEGS BIKE/SPIN SHORTS, GREAT FOR STRETCHING AND EXERCISING COTTON, GREAT FOR COMFORT, NIGHT WEAR OR OTHER So, jump into your shorts, find the style you love and make them one of your most versatile fashion items in your closet. Linen, Denim, Canvas or Cotton, make them tight or loose fit, whichever complements your body style and make sure you’re out and being SEEN. MEN: The styles for men today come in brilliant colors and varying lengths, above the knee and below. Until recently, it was a fashion mistake for men to wear shorts unless they were on a tennis court, a bike, a golf course or exercising. Now, it’s considered acceptable, especially plaid! And of course the women’s styles are endless. Just don’t forget about those allimportant pockets, the more the better. Comfort, style & functionally, will guarantee that SECOND GLANCE.

GEOCACHING E
veryone remembers hide and go seek, right?
For hours on end as a child I would beg my parents to close their eyes, as I would scamper off and try to camouflage into the corners of my house, waiting anxiously for someone to seek me!
As you could probably guess, it got old.
Or, at least my parents thought it did. I never really got tired of it; and till this day, I still love it! Except now, I Geocache! In “fancy shmancy terms”, Geocaching is “The recreational activity of hunting for and finding a hidden object by means of GPS coordinates posted on a website.” Simply, Geocaching is a grown up version of hide and go seek! People all over the world hide little boxes with trinkets inside. The goal of this is to try and find the hidden “treasure”. While getting exercise, you can have fun, and participate in a worldwide scavenger hunt. Who knows, a Geocache could be right out your back yard! Through Geocaching, I have learned about coordinates, and about GPS’! You can participate in this activity with all of your family, and it’s a fun little adventure for no cost at all! How to Tone Up those Arms Shapeless arms are embarrassing for both Men and Women. Men, are you falling short of filling up the sleeves of that shirt? Women, are your embarrassed wearing those sleeveless tops? Tone up those arms for good and feel sexy again. There are two reasons for flabby arms, one is being overweight and you will have to address this as well, but it’s not the only reason. First, let's introduce a four-step “rep” technique in your weight-lifting. This will intensify your workouts and help you build on what you have. Step 1: Tighten up the muscle Step 2: Squeeze the muscle for 1 to 2 seconds Step 3: Allow the muscle to cramp at the top of your motion. Step 4: Resist as your lower the weight. Before you run out to buy your favorite shirt or top, start with focusing on your arms with a slooooooooow curling technique. Exercise 1: Basic barbell curls- builds arm mass. Exercise 2: Hammer dumbbells curls- This elongates the biceps and builds the forearms Exercise 3: Seated incline dumbbells curls- This is a shaping exercise that will develop nice Exercise 4: Single concentrations dumbbell curls- Consider this the finishing touch that rounds out the bicep and gives a ball-like appearance to your bicep. Better yet, send me an email through Tukeeaz.com and I'll put together a custom plan so you can wear those form-fitting shirts and strapless dresses with pride!, Carlos Monge, Body by Design

THE DEEP END
PERSONAL INJURY LAWSUITS by Melanie Beauchamp
The consequences of choosing the wrong
personal injury attorney can be devastating. Did you know that without the right legal representation you could end up suing the wrong person or entity, receiving a smaller settlement, or losing your settlement? To make matters worse, you could end up owing your health insurance company money for treatment of injuries caused by the accident.
If your
Arizona personal injury law firm does not have the proper knowledge of Arizona’s PERSONAL INJURY LIEN LAW, then you may OWE money to third parties even though YOU were injured. To avoid these problems, you must familiarize yourself with basic knowledge regarding personal injury lawsuits.
Melanie Beauchamp is a contributor for Tukee AZ Magazine. As a long time resident of Ahwatukee, her personal attention and experience is advantageous to resolving your legal issues. She can be reached at melanie@beauchamplawoffice.com. For information www.arizonaaccidentinjury.com.

tukee az | SUMMER 2011
Does personal injury law apply to your recent injury? Personal injury law applies to any harm to one’s physical, mental, or emotional state due to another party’s negligence. Often, an individual seeks a personal injury settlement as the result of a motor vehicle accident. A personal injury accident can result from car accidents, motorcycle accidents, truck accidents, bus accidents, boating accidents, or airplane accidents. Other personal injury claims stem from bicycle or pedestrian accidents.
Do YOU HAVE ANY personal injury CLAIMS? If you or a loved one has been injured in a personal injury accident, you need to have knowledge of the personal injury claims you can make. Your personal injury lawyer can include economic and non-economic claims in your personal injury litigation. Economic claims include past and future medical treatment costs and lost income. Non-economic claims include pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and, in some cases, emotional pain and suffering. Hiring the best motor vehicle accident lawyer will ensure that you recover the most money possible in your Arizona personal injury settlement.
ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR MAKING WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM? A personal injury claim for something like an auto or workplace accident. Many people do not know that such a claim is available, and end up struggling alone with the painful consequences of the death of a loved one that was the result of negligence by someone else. How do you know if you have viable wrongful death claims? The only family members that may bring a claim for wrongful death are a spouse or children of the deceased person. The death for which you bring the claim must have been caused by the negligence of another party. Sometimes this can be difficult to prove, and an experienced attorney can assist you in evaluating your claim against another party.
ARE YOUR PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS SUBJECT TO A HEALTHCARE LIEN? A lien is a claim or encumbrance upon property to secure the payment of a debt, duty or other obligation. Why should you care about liens if you are seeking a personal injury settlement? Believe it or not, the law may require you to reimburse your health care provider for the cost of treating injuries caused by someone else’s negligence. If you find yourself requiring a personal injury lawsuit, do not attempt to do so without a Phoenix injury attorney with a thorough understanding of Arizona lien law and the ramifications of improper lawsuits.

YOU GOTTA CHECK THIS OUT ! by Andre Morris
Is it possible to blaze your own trail with nothing more than a tank of gas, a computer, smartphone, and a little spare time? Of course! Satisfy the explorer in you with experiences and interesting places right in your own state. Google publishes a free software program called Google Earth that is stuffed full of satellite imagery from around the world. To download and install Google Earth for your PC, Mac, or Linux computer visit www.google.com/ earth/download and follow the instructions. For iPhone, Android, and the iPad you will find Google Earth on the Google Earth for Mobile page m.google.com/earth. Peeking down through the clouds with a birds-eye view of Earth makes it easy to chart your next adventure. Many fascinating places can be discovered all around us, invisible from the ground and the naked eye. First, locate your position on the map. That can be accomplished by going to “Fly to” or “Search” and entering your address. On certain mobile devices, Google Earth will pinpoint your location automatically via GPS. Once you’ve identified your current location, zoom in on the map for a closer look. Next, you’ll want to load layers and places, preconfigured spots on the map that could be fun to visit. I like to enable each layer one at a time to find out what they contain. Pinpoint the layers that contain places of interest. When you select the checkbox for a layer on the menu, markers will appear on the map. Most of these markers are clickable and will open to reveal additional information, and photos. 32
tukee az | SUMMER 2011
The great thing about Google earth is the ability to find so many amazing (and relatively unknown) places close to home. Easily move around the map, locate interesting places, and then click on the icons to read more information. Once you’ve collected one or more places of interest, its time to head out and have some fun! Even though you’re Google mapping your next adventure, don’t forget to bring your digital camera along with you to photograph what you find. If you find something that isn’t already listed in Google Earth you can share your discovery with the rest of the world by uploading the picture to the Google Earth community. This will create a new point for others to explore. Another “you gotta check this out” website is the Google Earth Cool Places website, a place that has collected some of the strangest and most interesting spots on Earth. www.googleearthcoolplaces.com

Who’s at Fault? by Mark Deitchman A good day can turn into a bad day quickly when you are involved in a car accident. If this should happen do your best to stay calm and focus on the situation at hand. Try to remember everything you can about the incident, make notes and collect as much information as possible for the police and claims adjusters. Determining who is at fault will be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, element in any car accident. Who is at fault will determine which insurance company will respond and which driver will be surcharged. There are obvious situations where fault is easy to determine including when a driver rear-ends another driver or when a driver turns left in front of oncoming traffic. A police report and accident citations always help to establish fault as well. In parking lot accidents, where the police rarely respond, there will be no police report to help the claims adjuster determine who is at fault. In these situations, the positioning of the vehicles will be a huge factor in making a fault determination. Take pictures of all angles of the accident before moving the vehicles out of the way. Most cell phones have cameras but if yours doesn’t, keep a disposable camera in the glove box of your vehicle. The pictures will be a big help to the claims adjuster and will also prevent the other party from changing their story after they have had time to reflect on the incident.

to ahwatukee In May we featured Mothers in Business. Unfortunately, I boo booed (yes, I said that) and didn’t give notice to NCL, which brings Mothers and Daughters together in an effort to foster that relationship through community service, leadership development, and cultural awareness. For more than 50 years, National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) has been one of the nation's most distinctive and well-respected mother-daughter membership organizations.
Members are mothers with
daughters in grade 7-12. NCL believes in honoring the motherdaughter bond; and inspires and empowers women to succeed as confident, well-rounded and socially aware contributors in our communities. The Ahwatukee Foothills Chapter of NCL is no exception. Since being founded in 2003, the mothers from that chapter, have served along side their daughters at numerous philanthropic organizations through hands-on activities in and around our local communities. In 2010, their chapter members volunteered more than 5,750 hands-on-hours directly to our philanthropies. Our main philanthropic activities support, but are not limited to, the following organizations: • Alport Syndrome Foundation • Arizona Adoption and Foster Care • Arizonans for children • Back to School Clothing Drive • Banner Health • Best Buddies of Arizona • Feed My Starving Children • Salvation Army • St. Vincent de Paul • St. Mary's Food Bank • Susan G.
