Viola Frey Biography
Viola Frey was born in Lodi California on August 15, 1933. Viola knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age. To reach this goal she went to multiple colleges. In 1953 she attended the Stockton Delta College. In 1956 she went to the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland where she studied painting. Finally in 1958 she attended Tulane University in New Orleans. In 1965, Viola became a professor at the California College of Arts and Crafts. She continued at this job until 1999. She was best known for her sculptures of men and women, but she also created ceramic figurines that she called bricolage sculptures. She used a lot of color in her artwork.What inspired her to make these figurines was her collection of ceramic figures. She wanted to create her own. Viola Frey moved from Lodi CA, to San Francisco, and finally to a studio in Oakland. She owned around 4,000 books on art in her studio. Viola Frey died on July 26,2004. She left many amazing pieces of artwork behind for future generations to see and admire.

Analize Title: Man Kicking World By: Viola Frey Type: Sculpture Subject: A man in a plain environment kicking the world. He is larger than the world. Objects: A large man and a small world First Impression: When I first look at this, the bright color jumps out at me. The detail of the art is astonishing. Colors: There were many colors used. There is blue, orange, yellow, green, and black. Shapes: Some shapes are spheres, and 3D shapes. There are straight lines and curved lines. Light: The light forms a small shadow under the world and man. Interpret ● The artist is trying to say that people are more important than the world. The man is kicking the world and is much bigger than it. He is greater than the world. ● To me the artwork means human worth. I think this because the man is bigger than the world, so the human man is more important than the world. Symbols: The man is bigger than the world. That is a symbol that humans are worth something. Evaluate: Value: This artwork may invoke beauty of the human men and women. Relevance: This artwork reminds people that humans have worth. We are not just here to fill space on the earth. Strong/Weak Value: The artwork has strong value in human worth and has weak value in expression of emotion.
Joe Mangrum Biography Joe Mangrum was born in Florissant Missouri on February 10, 1969. When he was 8 he took oil painting lessons. When he got older he won a trip to India. This trip got him interested in travel and cultural influences. He is best known for his sand paintings. Before he created sand paintings, he got an education. In 1991 he got a Bachelors of fine arts degree at the School of the Arts institute. In addition to all this, he received an award. He got the Lorenzo il Magnifico award in 2003. To this day Joe is still creating sand paintings for everyone to see.

Analize Title: Earth, Wind, and Fire By: Joe Mangrum Type: Sand Painting Subject: A picture of an earthly place with wind surrounding it. Objects: Wind, circle picture, and flower in center First Impression: The intricate designs popped out at me when I first saw it. Colors: Orange, blue, green and yellow Shapes:circles, curved lines, and triangles Light: The light hits it in the right spot so it gets a slight glow. Interpret ● The artist is trying to express the different elements of the earth without showing them directly ● To me this painting means that the elements can work in different ways. Symbols: The fiery light, the gust of wind, and the blue “water” surrounding them. Evaluate: Value: This will express the beauty of the world and its elements Relevance: It shows that even the easiest things can have beauty
Strong/Weak Value: It shows that the easiest things have a purpose. It doesn’t show inspiration. Wayne Thiebaud Biography Wayne Thiebaud was born in Mesa, Arizona on November 15th 1920. When he was in high school he apprenticed at Walt Disney studios creating the “inbetweeners” of Goofy, Pinocchio, and Jiminy Cricket. He went to school at Frank Wiggins trade school. He also attended San Jose state College before transferring to Sacramento State College. He is best known for his works that show common objects,but he also painted landscapes and characters such as Mickey Mouse. Thiebaud received many awards in his lifetime. In 1994 he got the National Medal of Arts presented to him by President Clinton. In 2001, He got the Lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Design. In 2010, he was “inducted” into the California Hall of Fame. Finally in 2013 the got the California Art award. Thiebaud is still alive today and is around 95 years old.

Analize Title: Pies, Pies, Pies By: Wayne Thiebaud Type: Painting Subject: A table with a bunch of pies on it Objects: Pies, plates, and a table First Impression: The detail of the pies jump out at me. All the different colors do also. The pies themselves make me hungry. Colors: Red,Yellow, white, brown, and black Shapes: Triangles, circles and rectangles. Light: The pies appear to have shadows on them. Interpret ● The artist is trying to say that even the most common things have meaning. ● To me this art means that even the smallest things are important to the world. Great numbers have effect Symbols: The pies are very common objects in a house. There is a large amount of pies in this painting. Evaluate:
Value: This painting may cause people to become hungry and crave pie. I feel this way because it depicts pie. People love to eat pie so this makes people crave it even more. Relevance: This painting shows me that there is worth in numbers. There are lots of pies on the table so it has a meaning. Strong/Weak Value: It is strong when telling people that there is strength in numbers and making people hungry. It is weak in inspiring others.
