Lost Paradise

Preface This book is an exquisite collection of works by and inspired by Keith Carter. The images inspired by Carter were taken by Isabella Ponader. Some of the photos taken by Ponader are cropped into a square frame; similar to the way Carter presents his. Other photographs are left un-cropped to show Ponader’s interpretation of Carter’s style of photography, while also putting her own personal spin on it. A shared characteristic of both artists’ images is the dramatic use of depth of field. This is used in order for the photographs to have a mysterious aura about them. The photography in this book is meant to be emotionally evoking, and make the viewer think about or question the backstory of these pictures. These images serve to remind us of times gone by in our lives, memories recalled from small details in the back of minds such as childhood adventures or even nightmares.

Keith Carter Carter grew up watching his single mother scrape by as a child portrait photographer, but he never considered photography as a possible career for himself. At age twenty-one, the light in one of his mother’s prints caught his eye and inspired him to begin photographing his own pictures. Carter would try to match the tonal range of famous photographs in his own prints. When he was twenty-five, he went to New York with special access granted to the archived prints at the Museum of Modern Art. After this experience, Carter decided to make his home state the center of his artistic world. According to Carter, he “started looking at where I lived as an exotic land, almost as an allegory. Carter is a husband and teacher. He is a professor at Lamar University, his alma mater, and also teaches workshops. His work is represented around the world and in the permanent collections of many leading art museums. He transforms the mundane details of smalltown life into the sublime, revealing mystical, quirky, and difficult facets of human (and animal) nature.
