Loretta Paraguassu An artist who plays with paint and loves the process.
Georgia artist Loretta Paraguassu uses trademark splashes of intense color and rhythmic lines whether she is working in watercolor and ink or oil on canvas. Her love of Japanese and Chinese art,the folk arts of South America and respect for the many masters of the craft – Kandinsky, Klee, Picasso and all her “friends” whose work she delights in visiting in art museums -- can be blamed for a style that defies description. The result is very contemporary and creates a world of its own. Paraguassu was raised in New Haven, Conn. where she was particularly mesmerized by Josef Albers’ paintings on display at Yale University Art Museum and purchased a Paul Klee print for the family home. Formal art training didn’t happen until later in life. She majored in English literature and became a journalist, often writing about the arts for the likes of the Los Angeles Times and the Honolulu Star Bulletin. A documentary she created for PBS Hawaii, “Art and Architecture in and around the Capitol District” won a major award. Art has always been her constant companion. In high school, she began doing commissioned portraits and was a winner in a Halloween window painting contest. Her witch weeping over a broken broom on the 31st of October attracted a great deal of attention. Watercolor paints and paper were always packed in her suitcase wherever she went.

When she moved to Hawaii, Paraguassu became fascinated with metal arts and taught herself how to make jewelry and, particularly, cloisonné enameling. A year at California College of Art continued that study. Besides a B.A. from UCLA, Paraguassu has an M.A. in film and video with a concentration in scriptwriting from Georgia State University. As with all the other things she has done, there is more to the story. Unable to stay away from the art department, she stretched out the two-year track to four and completed every graduate level painting class available. Recently, the artist organized “Dolls in the City,” an exhibit at the 2 Rules Fine Art Gallery in Marietta. A protest against sex trafficking, the art submitted by members of the Women’s Caucus of Art of Georgia, drew a great deal of attention.

Virtually all of Paraguassu’s art has a story behind it. Her own piece in that exhibit was an eerie street scene in soft yellows and grays with flowing lines. A single, obviously feminine figure sits in the foreground with ghostly figures hovering in the background. It sums up the problem and emotional baggage it carries. Such is the work of Loretta Paraguassu – widely collected and frequently exhibited. The story wouldn’t be complete without mentioning that the artist has spawned two well-known Atlanta Artists. Robert Paraguassu is Director of 3-D Animation for the very successful television show, Archer. Andre Paraguassu’s work was recently featured on the postcard Decatur Art Festival sent out to attract submissions this year. His artistry will also be seen very soon on the cover he has designed for his latest CD…Andre Paraguassu and his band, Book of Colors. Andre sings, plays the guitar and has written all the music on that CD.
