Cover Letter I graduated as an Architect and Urbanist in Brazil. I recently got a Master’s Degree on Architecture and Urbanism in São Paulo. My intellectual curiosity on transportation systems and my passion for research and understanding the dynamics of cities on their several scales leaded me to research about pedestrian movement around railway and bus stations. In my Master’s Degree, I developed a methodology to assess the pedestrian spaces around transport nodes located in major centers of the city of São Paulo. I am used to working on the metropolitan scale, since the metropolitan region of São Paulo comprises 39 cities holding 20 million inhabitants, and an inter-municipal transportation system. Having studied in São Paulo has stimulated me to enjoy urbanism on every scale. From the pedestrian scale to a regional scale. With the development of technology and the evolution of cities through a larger urban population, the multiplicity of activities in the city gradually increases the complexity of the analysis methods, which seek to understand the movement of people on the different scales of the urban territory. I am proactive and hard-working. I have passion in researching and was a very disciplined student. Besides my experience and curiosity to learn, I also have skills in urban design on several scales. I comprehend the complexity of the contemporary urban dynamics in its different scales. Through these qualifications I developed a comprehensive understanding of urban planning process. I believe it would be a very positive international exchange for your office. I feel pretty confident in my ability to learn quickly, and I deal with new software easily. I would like to gain more experience as an architect and urban designer. I would like also to further develop my communication skills, because I believe that architecture and urban planning can only be possible with a group of people thinking together.

The thesis proposes to answer the following question “How does the quality of public spaces adjacent to transport nodes influence the movement of pedestrians and their interconnection with transportation means, especially metro/bus and train/bus?” The analysis of this dissertation is divided into two phases; at first, the analysis of the composition of the public spaces, and the current conditions of their elements around the Consolação/Paulista and Lapa nodes was carried out, before analyzing the movement of pedestrians through the method of observing public spaces – extracted and adapted from the studies of Jan Gehl (2013). Through the results of this research, it was possible to understand how the micro-accessibility in the pedestrian circulation spaces is neglected. The methodology developed is a potential tool for researchers and planners, and it should be part of the urban planning process for the development of an appropriate urban design. R.
