The General Manager of Skorpion Zinc Mine and Refinery, Prasad Suryarao, says the game of football is the most popular and unifying in the entire universe as the sport requires the most simplest of equipments to partake in it Speaking at the official opening of the Skorpion Zinc U-17 soccer tournament held at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, Suryarao indicates that soccer is the only sport that has the magic of unifying people irrespective of where it is being played. He says whether the sport is being played inside a house, stadia or in town streets, has the phenomenon of permeating across language and cultural barrier, adding that above all, those that play the game do so under the rules and regulation of the game. Suryarao stressed that Skorpion Zinc believed in changing the lives of Namibians, and "as an emerging career path football has a potential of changing lives" if all its managerial and administrative functions are properly carried out. Hence, according him, the Skorpion Zinc U-17 football tournament has provided an opportunity for both the social and economic sector to strive for the betterment of both the social and economic well being of Namibians. He said through the tournament, the football fraternity will be called upon to use the opportunity to nurture and develop players who will in turn grow to be useful citizens who will contribute towards nation building through sport. He says in investing in youth development, the Skorpion Zinc is contributing towards government's desire that mining companies like Skorpion Zinc must plough back into communities and societies from where they have drawn the natural recourses from. The Managing Director says by supporting the sporting activities such as the U-17 soccer tournament, his company is fulfilling its social responsibility by giving back to societies and the country as a whole. He says being the largest mining company operating in the southern part of the country, Skorpion Zinc always support the government's national development initiatives across Namibia and that Skorpion envisage sport as a key priority development area that the corporate community must support. Suryarao singled out the development of the Keetmanshoop Stadium as a milestone towards Skorpion Zinc's contribution towards nation building and sport development, saying that as a corporate entity Skorpion Zinc has an extensive social responsibility program that is envisaged to change the lives of Namibian people for the better. He says his company has contributed largely towards areas such as education, health, sport and environmental preservation. In concluding, Suryarao says while his company has awaited with abated breath this year's edition of tournament, the third edition will be even bigger and better, stressing that his company was proud of the investment they are making into football because their objectives are being realised.
