What do I need to know before buying a used vehicle?

W

hether it’s your first car or your 15th, buying a vehicle is always a major purchase, but it doesn’t have to be a stressful one. Dave Jacobs and the experts at Kamloops Dodge have taken the uncertainty out of buying a pre-owned vehicle. Used cars, says Jacobs, come in all shapes and sizes and they come in all kinds of conditions. Buying a used vehicle off a major dealership as opposed to a private sale has some inherent advantages, Jacobs says. “That dealership has a name in the community — they have a reputation and they want to keep it.” When a dealership like Kamloops Dodge takes a used vehicle into its inventory there are a system of checks that must occur first. When a previously owned vehicle comes through Kamloops Dodge, expert staff first assesses make, model and mileage. Next, a car proof and lien clearance are completed. A car proof is basically a background check on a vehicle, and will show whether or not it has been involved in an accident, and if so, what the nature of the accident was. “It’ll show us if it was a front end collision or vandalism repair,” Jacobs says. “This protects the consumer, and it protects us as well.” Finally, Jacobs says, the car is put through the shop where a complete mechanical inspection is performed. If the vehicle is

it’s sold off and shipped away to a nonmajor dealer. Another advantage to buying off a major dealer is the ability to purchase an extended warranty and access on-the-lot financing. Finally, Jacobs says, buying off a lot like Kamloops Dodge offers a measure of security all on its own. “We’ve been around 45 years. You know if there’s a problem you can come back to us and we’re going to be here.”

What’s the best way to choose a new set of golf clubs?

N

ew golf clubs can be a sizeable investment. Make sure the clubs are the right fit for you. The professional staff at Golfland can show you how. In golf one size does not fit all. Everyone has different sizes and swing tendencies. To get properly analyzed the staff at Golfland recommend a custom fitting with one of our professionals in our indoor simulators. There is a quick question and answer period followed by height, arm length and hand measurements. Then comes the dynamic swing test where the golfer hits a series of shots. By evaluating the results we can better understand how the golfer’s setup and swing affect the position of the club head at impact. The next stage is analyzing the flight of the ball. This will determine the lie angle, club length, shaft type and flex, model and grip size that will give the golfer the best opportunity to achieve his or her desired results. Buying clubs right “off the shelf” might be a quick way to purchase but might be the wrong choice. Let the Golfland professionals help you choose wisely.

Top Tips from the Pros: 1. Get properly measured 2. Get your swing analyzed 3. Check your lie angle

Once you’ve been properly measured, have your swing analyzed and check the lie angle of the club to ensure success on the links.

Is it possible to purchase a home without a downpayment?

I

f coming up with a 10 per cent downpayment is the only thing stopping you from owning your own home, then head over to 429 St. Paul St.

Vision 429 Housing Ltd., a corporation owned and controlled by Kamloops United Church, has taken away that challenge of homeownership, making it possible for qualified purchasers to afford the security of owning their own home. 429 St. Paul is not subsidized housing, and it is not lowincome housing, says spokeswoman Mary Ann Milobar. What it is, she says, is a unique solution that allows middle-income earners the opportunity to own a home without spending years saving for a downpayment. Those earning under $85,000 annually are eligible for a 10 per cent downpayment, paid for by the church. That amount will be posted as a second mortgage, but will carry zero interest, and is paid back to the United Church when the homeowner decides to sell the property. “We’ve heard from diverse groups of people,” says Milobar, who feels that once people realize the benefits of the program, the 41 units available under the Home Owner Plan will be quickly snapped up. 429 St. Paul is ideal for people of various walks — from those wishing to downsize and looking for the ease of living in Kamloops’ downtown core, to recently graduated university students. The goal is to create a vibrant residential space, made up of people from all walks across all age groups, says Milobar.

Vision 429 at 429 St. Paul St. offers 41 units available through a Home Ownership Plan, meaning the Kamloops United Church provides a 10 per cent downpayment for those who make less than $85,000 annually.

Outstanding design, unsurpassed central location and home ownership assistance all combine to make 429 St. Paul a place that everyone can call home.” three-bedroom units. All owners have access to a rooftop garden with a barbecue area and patio, as well as a hospitality and amenity room. The building is equipped with well-lit underground parking as well as secure scooter and bicycle parking.

“With student loans some of these people haven’t been able to amass the $15,000 to $20,000 they need for a downpayment, but they’re making enough income to pay a mortgage payment,” says Milobar.

Units feature private balconies, additional same-floor storage, in-suite laundry, energy efficient appliances, nine-foot ceilings, and as an incentive, those who purchase pre-sale have the opportunity to choose some finishings. Outstanding design, unsurpassed central location and home ownership assistance all combine to make 429 St. Paul a place that everyone can call home.

Inclusivity and ease of ownership aside, there are plenty of other reasons to choose 429 St. Paul. The development offers 56 condos over five floors, including studio, one, two and

What’s the best way to protect my home and belongings?

f you’re in the market for an alarm system, Kamloops Alarm, Kamloops oldest security company has you — and your home and business security needs — covered. There is significant value in going to a locally owned and operated alarm company to secure your belongings; including immediate customer service and talking to someone local when service is required. “Shopping local also means that you help the local economy and you’re going to have a lot quicker service,” says office administrator Glenda Coulson. Kamloops Alarm has been making residents feel safe for 25 years, so if you’re in need of an alarm system it’s safe to say Kamloops Alarm will be there when you need them. “Everybody just wants that extra security and the comfort of knowing that if someone is going to come into your home you’re going to have an alarm go off,” Coulson says. Because Kamloops Alarm has been around for so long, staff and technicians have seen plenty of change. Today, many of Kamloops Alarm’s clients no longer have residential phone lines, so Kamloops Alarm offers a GSM cell communicator allowing someone to have a monitored residential alarm without a landline. Ryan Moffett, president of Kamloops Alarm, and BCIT certified security technician, states that another key trend is in wireless. Moffett explains that until recent wireless technology was developed it was necessary for alarm compa-

nies to go in and retrofit older homes for the necessary wiring. Now, installing alarm systems in older homes is much simpler, cost effective and quicker. As well, you can now control your lighting, front door or thermostat and security system with the new wireless security panels all from your phone. Many homeowners are choosing to include cameras as part of their alarm systems. The cameras are high-end, and Kamloops Alarm offers an extended five year warranty. Kamloops Alarm has been in business for 25 years because it provides excellent customer service. While door-todoor alarm system sales have become common, Moffett recommends residents

do their homework before signing an agreement. Ask the right questions such as: Where is your head office? Where is the nearest service office? Do I own my equipment when the contract is up? How much will it cost to have my system serviced if something goes wrong? “When people are having their systems installed, they really should be checking for a valid license. Security systems installers must have their technical qualifications and be licensed as a Security Alarm Installer with the B.C. Security Services Act,” says Moffett. Moffett thanks customers for a making Kamloops Alarm the city’s oldest and largest security company, and for contributing to a fantastic 25 years in business.

Is it necessary to re-key a newly purchased property? W hen you purchase and move into a new home, one of the first things that should be done is to have the lock re-keyed.

If the locks are in good working order, Ray’s Lock & Key can change the combination of your locks so that the old keys will not operate the lock anymore, so you, as the new owner, don’t have to worry about unauthorized entry from previous owners or in the case of a rental home, previous tenants. Most landlords do have their locks re-keyed, as necessary, for the protection and security of their tenants. New locks are not required if the original locks are in good shape. For onethird to one-half of the cost of new locks, Ray’s Lock & Key can reset the combination and a new key can be generated. Before moving into a new home, check with the real estate agent or landlord and stipulate as part of your purchase or lease agreement that the premises be re-keyed. You don’t know how many builders, tradesmen or friends of previous owners or tenants have keys to your new home. Ray’s Lock & Key has been in business for more than 30 years and is the city’s oldest original owner locksmith company. Ray’s handles anything and everything to do with locks, keys and security hardware — from letting customers in to their locked vehicle when the keys have been misplaced, to rekeying homes and businesses. The company also installs electronic combination locks and biometric (fingerprint recognition) locks and replaces Canada Post mailbox locks. So, if you get locked out of your car, house or business, or your key breaks off in the lock of your car, or you’ve recently purchased a home and you want to protect yourself from unauthorized entry, get in touch with Ray’s Lock & Key. Ray’s Lock & Key has been serving Kamloops residents for more than 30 years, and thanks its loyal customers.

Ray’s Lock & Key owner-operator Ray Dhaliwal has been helping to keep Kamloops residents secure for more than 30 years. It’s important, he says, to have any new home re-keyed.

Why is it important to plan ahead for future legal needs? W

A Representation Agreement is a legal document that allows you to appoint a person, the “Representative” to help you make decisions about your personal care and health care and to make decisions for you when you cannot. It is one personal planning tool that you can use but is not legally required. The law states that you cannot be refused goods or services just because you do not have a Representation Agreement.

e are all familiar with the quote, “but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes”. I think we can also say with certainty that we will all grow older and while we hope to end our days in full control of our affairs many of us will not. There are several legal documents available to allow a person you trust to help you in the areas of finances and health care and to give you the confidence that your wishes will be carried out when you need someone else to make decisions for you. The two most common documents I assist my clients with are an Enduring Power of Attorney and a Representation Agreement.

A General Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint a person you trust, the “Attorney,” to look after your financial and legal affairs when you are not available. The authority under this document ends if you become mentally incapacitated and unable to direct or supervise your Attorney. An Enduring Power of Attorney is a legal

Janice Rutherford, Notary Public

document that allows you to appoint a trusted person to deal with your financial and legal affairs while you are capable of handling your affairs and the Attorney’s authority to act for you continues if you become incapable of handling your financial and legal affairs. It endures beyond your incapacity. It is a very important document and should be a part of everyone’s person planning. No one can act for you in the area of finances unless they have the legal authority to do so.

On the Move

There are different types of Representation Agreements, including a Representation Agreement for routine financial affairs. This document allows you to appoint someone to look after paying bills and dealing with basic finances when you are not able to appoint someone to act under a Power of Attorney. Power of Attorney and Representation Agreements are legal documents and are written to comply with the laws of British Columbia. Call my office for a free initial consultation to discuss your personal planning needs.

What do beginners need to know before they go fishing? W

hether you’re brand new to fishing or an experienced angler, Surplus Herby’s has what you need. The first question you’ll be asked when you show up at the Tranquille Road store is what type of fishing you plan on doing. “Are they going to fish local waters or are they going to the Coast,” store manager Johnny Garland says he always asks. “Are they fishing from a boat or from shore?” If you’re brand new to the sport, the first items to check off your list are a rod and reel. The staff at Surplus Herby’s knows exactly what you will need depending on where you’re headed, and they can even put the line on for you. Then you’ll need to fill up your tackle box with swivels and weights, hooks, lures and bobbers, says Garland. “Another popular sport around here is fly fishing, so we have the biggest selection and the cheapest flies in town,” Garland says, adding that people new to fly fishing are routinely coming in looking to be outfitted. “We have a lot of people struggle with tying their lines together for fly fishing, so we can put the backing on and your leader and tip it — we do all that for the customer,” he says.

MURRAY MITCHELL/THE DAILY NEWS

Surplus Herby’s store manager Johnny Garland and assistant manager Maureen Wilsher can show you everything you’ll need to be successful on the water this summer.

Once you’ve got the basics covered, then it’s time to move on to the extras — the boots, waders, and let’s not forget the all-important fishing licence. The store also carries float tubes and pontoon boats. The float tubes are ideal for those who don’t have a truck to haul a boat, but who still want to get out and away from shore. “You can just toss it in the back of your car,” Garland says.

Surplus Herby’s has all the expert advice for getting out on local waters, and customers are welcome to come in and check out the fishing report, which shows what local lakes are fishing well and what lakes have been slow, as well as what type of equipment and flies have been successful where. And if you’re taking your family with you on the lake, don’t forget to make sure they’re set up. Surplus Herby’s carries character fishing rods for children.

How do I select a company to install a new air conditioner?

I

n a hot climate like Kamloops, air conditioning is more than a luxury. The ability to keep your home comfortable through the hot summer months could be the difference between enjoying the season and wishing it is over. Finding the right A/C contractor is not difficult, just follow the steps. n Ask others who have hired an A/C contractor if the contractor did a good job and provided reliable service. n Get three written cost estimates that describe in detail the system to be installed. The contractor calculates the cooling capacity your home requires and estimates the size of the system. n Check with an electrical contractor to be sure your wiring is adequate. If not, your expense will also include the cost of extra wiring. Make sure that, if you are getting a new air conditioner or heat pump, that the electrical portion of the work is done by a licensed electrician. An electrical permit is required by law if it is a new system or the wiring is being replaced back to the panel on a replacement system. n Look at the size (noted by BTUs) of the equipment the contractor will install. If size varies significantly, ask each contractor to recalculate the cooling capacity you need. n Review each bid for the type of warranty provided. Many contractors will provide a oneyear warranty on work. Manufacturers usually warranty air-conditioning equipment for oneyear, with a four-year extension on the compressor.

Celebrating 20 Years in Kamloops Bryant Heating and Cooling Names Rapid Cool Mechanical a Factory Authorized Dealer Everything about your new Bryant heating or cooling system should make you happy, from the unit itself to the person who installs it. That’s what being a Factory Authorized Dealer is all about.

National HVAC Manufacturer Pledges 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed for Rapid Cool Mechanical Customers While this is an important accomplishment for Rapid Cool, the real news is what it means to Kamloops area homeowners. “Our Factory Authorized Dealers represent the highest level of customer service and satisfaction available,” said Glenn Cooke, Residential Sales Manager for the British Columbia market. “We believe in these qualified dealers so much that we are providing their customers with a 100 percent satisfaction and service guarantee.” The 100 percent satisfaction guarantee is a new cornerstone for the Bryant Factory Authorized Dealers program. The guarantee applies to all new product installments made by Bryant Factory Authorized Dealers, like Rapid Cool, and applies to the product itself, as well as the service from the dealer. If any customer is dissatisfied with the product or service, Bryant will do “whatever it takes” to provide a satisfactory solution for the customer. Less than five percent of heating and cooling contractors in the country receive the Factory Authorized Dealer distinction. To qualify, dealers must meet Bryant’s rigid criteria, not only for technical expertise, but also for their business practices and customer service quality. Those who receive the endorsement are backed by Bryant’s 100 percent satisfaction guarantee.

What are the latest plumbing & lighting design trends? P reparing to build a home or renovate a bathroom and looking for something a little out of the ordinary? The expert design staff at B.A. Robinson has you covered.

Kim Loth, B.A. Robinson sales consultant, says it’s possible to create a spa-like escape in your home. “We have things people may have not seen before — and this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to choices for both styling and price point,” she says, glancing around the impressive showroom on Laval Crescent. Freestanding tubs, she says, are functional works of art — becoming that fixture that turns an ordinary bathroom into something quite stunning. “They are a bit beyond the ‘every day,’” she says, “they definitely have that ‘wow’ factor.” Other up and coming plumbing trends include motion sensors. We’ve seen them in the public restrooms where touchless equals greater sanitation, and now that concept is being brought into homes. “We’re about to install a motion sensing faucet in a kitchen, where you just wave your hand in front of it and it turns on. What makes more financial sense, leasing or financing? T

he main factor to consider when thinking about leasing versus financing is the interest rate on a loan versus the interest that would be embedded within a lease.

For some people buying versus leasing also comes down to personal preference and life circumstance. A lot of people like to drive a newer vehicle and might want to lease a car every four years and then turn it in.”

I was leasing a vehicle about a year ago — there were no zero per cent financing deals, so I would have had to pay about eight per cent interest on a vehicle loan. At the end of the day even if I went through the whole term of the lease and decided to purchase the car, and finance that purchase, I still would have been $3,500 ahead. There are also tax consequences to think about. If you own a vehicle for business, you can write the vehicle off over time. You can only do this over several years, however. It’s amortized over the life of the vehicle — the capital cost allowance for vehicles is around 30 per cent. With lease payments, you can just write off the entire payment, depending on what percentage of the vehicle’s use is for business. For example if you use the vehicle 75 per cent of the time for business, you would be able to write off 75 per cent of the lease payment. Keep in mind there’s a maximum tax threshold there of $800 per month when writing off a leased vehicle. On my website I’ve got a financial calculator that actually gives you a buyversus-lease comparison. You plug in your numbers, and can decide which option comes out best for you given your situation. That’s at www.gibsoncga. ca/financial_index.htm. It will calculate

decision might also depend on what they’re using the vehicle for. Say you’re using the vehicle to work up North, and you’ll be driving on rough roads. That might mean you’d prefer to lease since the vehicle is going to have a lot of wear and tear on it, and you can just turn it in. How many kilometres you’re going to be driving is also an important factor, because leases generally have an upper limit, and if you exceed the mileage you’re going to get charged extra at the end of the lease.

What should I look for in a new pair of running shoes? T o buy proper running shoes, there are some basic facts you should first consider. To start with, it’s important to know your foot type. Do you have high arches, for example? Or are your feet normal? Flat-footed, per chance? Few people have completely normal feet, meaning consultation with a shoe professional is often required.

Choosing the wrong shoe for your foot type will cause problems, generally in the form of pain or injury.”

The type of foot you have will dictate what kind of shoe you need. People with high arches, for example, need a flexible shoe with lots of cushion and as the high arches in their feet are rigid and do not absorb shock the same as someone with a normal foot. People with low arches need shoes with motion-control features, in order to give the foot the support it needs under the shock forces generated by running on pavement. Choosing the wrong shoe for your foot type will cause problems, generally in the form of pain or injury. Running is a demanding sport and the feet take the brunt of it. The shoes form the insulating barrier between feet and pavement. Technology makes a difference. At Runner’s Sole, staff ask many questions before putting you in footwear, including what shoes you currently wear, how long you have had them, how often and what surfaces you run on. The staff will also ask about current or past injuries, and measure the foot’s width and length. They will also analyze gait and stride to see if there is any other factors that could affect what kind of shoes are needed. Lastly, different activities require different kinds of shoes, so the staff will ask what kind of activities you envision. Running requires a dedicated running shoe, but other kinds of activities including walking, fitness classes or other exercises might be suited to a good cross trainer.

Runner’s Sole offers more than 30 styles of shoes in a wide range of sizes, and staff are experts at finding the right shoe for the right activity.

Runner’s Sole offers more than 30 styles of shoes in a wide range of lengths and widths. We pride ourselves on being able to find shoes for every foot. Running is enjoyable and healthy. Having the right shoe can make all the difference.

What makes a great dance school?

T

here are lots of extracurricular activities for children such as athletics, music and dance. Because all parents want the best for their children, here are some things to consider when choosing the dance studio that will best fit your — and your child’s — needs. n When you visit the school for the first time, ask a few students what they think. Ask a few parents, too. Do they think they are getting their money’s worth? n What are the fees? Are there fees in addition to the price of enrollment? How much can you reasonably expect to pay for clothing and other extras? n What is the philosophy of the dance studio? Is it to teach children how to enjoy dance? How to dance with correct technique? Is it to make the studio look good at competitions? Teachers Your child’s dance instructors should be positive, professional and experienced. They should have a rapport with their students that promotes not only technical growth but social and emotional growth as well. Ask about the dance histories of teachers, including each teacher’s area of expertise, by whom they were trained and who generally choreographs their dances. n What accomplishments have the teachers attained? Can they teach what they know to others? And are they especially good at working with children? By observing, you can learn whether or not a teacher has a genuine love for children and dance. All of these aspects of the teaching staff should be compatible with the expectations that you have

for your children’s dance experience. Classes Decide in what type of class you would like to enroll your child. Classes can include ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, modern, lyrical, funk, hip-hop, gymnastics, tumbling, baton and musical theatre. In addition, make sure that an appropriate skill-level class is offered to match the child’s abilities. Some classes require an audition to place a child where he or she will thrive. You should also consider the amount of time you are willing to commit to dance. Because many classes culminate in group performances that require rehearsal, a dancer’s presence is imperative. Look for a studio whose schedule is compatible with your family’s schedule. It is also wise to find out if classes are offered during summer, spring and win-

ter school breaks. These interim sessions can provide an exciting experience for children when school is not in session. Facility Your child’s dance studio should be safe, clean, up-beat, student friendly and equipped with the following: n Mirrors to promote confidence and help students improve their technique. n Suspended hardwood floors cushion and assist moves such as leaps and turns. They prevent shin splints and alleviate impact to backs, knees and ankles. n Ballet barres assist in balance when training and learning new moves. n Age-appropriate music. Discipline Personal discipline is essential in dance. Part of this discipline is displayed through attire. When studios enforce a dress code, it reinforces this principle.

How do I select the perfect wine, every time? M atching food and wine is like matching people. Sometimes it’s easy and you get fireworks. (Hello prime rib and Cabernet Sauvignon!) Sometimes opposites attract. (Halibut and Cabernet Franc.) The trick to the perfect pairing is to think of the wine as another ingredient in your meal. Here’s how to be a wine-pairing star at your next dinner party: 1: The colour of the wine is less important than its body or “weight.” In fact, three of the most important elements when pairing food and wine are balance, body, and flavor. The idea is to match the weight of the wine to the weight of the flavors in the meal. That’s why full-bodied, tannic red wines are so delicious with big proteins (like steak or rich cheeses). Meanwhile, lighter fare such as shellfish or summer pastas respond beautifully to more vibrant, “zippy” whites like Pinot Gris or Reisling. 2: Start light and work your way up. If you are serving several courses with several wines, start with the lightest dishes and the lightest wines.

enhance the dish and make you look like a sommelier at the dinner table.

3: Look for similar flavours in the food and wine.

5: For dishes with lots of spice or heat, serve sweeter wines.

There are a million and one ways to prepare chicken, so consider the sauces, spices, and herbs you will be using before choosing a wine. A spicy Gewurztraminer may go well with Rosemary Chicken. A citrusy Sauvignon Blanc with lemon and herb grilled chicken. Coq au vin, braised in a rich, wine-based sauce, craves a medium-bodied red such as a Cabernet Franc or Marichel Foch. Yes, you read that right! Forget the old school rule of red wine with red meat and white with white meat.

Sweeter white wines (a 1 or 2 on the sweetness scale) are ideal for curries, Thai food, or anything with wasabi, chipotle, or even Frank’s. These wines tend to be lower in alcohol and acidity with lots of fruit and a clean, refreshing finish. This combination cuts heat and accentuates flavour. 6: Sparkling wine goes with just about everything.

4: Add a little wine to the dish, a little to the cook, and a little to the guests.

Anyone who makes (or enjoys) sparkling wine will verify this tip! Bubbles are also a nice break in the middle of a meal to cleanse the palate.

Julia Child lived by this rule and so should we! The alcohol evaporates during the cooking, but the flavours remain to

The professional team at Re-Face It can give your kitchen new life while keeping you on budget. Left, a kitchen prior to its Re-Face It makeover, right, the same kitchen after.

Can I update my kitchen without a complete remodel? I f your existing kitchen design works well, and was built well originally, then chances are what you need isn’t a remodel, but a re-face. Cabinet refacing not only costs less than an entire remodel, but it can also be completed in days rather than weeks, and the end results are stunning.

It’s also possible to get additional matching cabinetry or a free-standing island, as well as custom-made drawers and tracks, new countertops, backsplashes in laminate with Corian or wood accents.

What does a kitchen re-face involve?

n Cost. You can save between 30 to 70 per cent by re-facing instead of replacing your cabinets, depending on your plans.

n All new doors and drawer fronts — with an exclusive heat and warp resistant raised panel, resin-core doors or beautiful solid wood. n Choice of more than 300 door style and colour combinations n Exclusive permanent lamination process: all exterior cabinet surfaces are covered with matching laminate, vinyl or natural wood n Beautiful new high-quality hardware and hinges

Why reface?

What about quality? n Chances are your existing cabinets are of better quality construction than the cabinets you can buy to replace them. Unless you spend big bucks for a quality cabinet, most the of lower-to mid-range cabinets are basic pressed wood covered in a fancy contact paper.

Are refaced cabinets durable?

n After your cabinets are covered in plastic laminate (the same material your countertops are made of), they are easy to clean, waterproof, require no upkeep and best of all, can be repaired if any damage should occur. Do refaced cabinets look good? n Yes, and in most cases it’s hard to tell a refaced kitchen from a new one. Also, when using solid colours, full sheet lamination can be used to have very few or no visible seams between cabinets. Is there much mess and inconvenience with re-facing? n Very little, because the average refacing installation is usually complete in three or four days by expert installers. You will have to empty your cupboards and drawers.

Why is buying from a local RV dealer so important? B

uying a recreational vehicle should be a happy experience, not a stressful one. Follow these tips from Country RV and you’ll be well on your way to having a fun and carefree summer with your family and your new RV.

n Consider the whole package when you are thinking of buying an RV. Don’t go buy a heavy-duty truck if you’re looking to pull a small tent trailer. If you already have a vehicle you’d like to tow your RV with, make sure it can handle the size and weight of whatever trailer you purchase. If you’re not sure of your towing capabilities speak to your vehicle dealer or a representative from Country RV. n Sit down and figure out what you’re going to do with the RV. Are you only going to camp once or twice a year? Are you using it for a family of two or five? Are you going to be camping in the winter? Have answers to all of these questions before you start looking for an RV, it will make buying easier and you will be happier with your purchase in the end. n Look at buying new rather than used. The financing you can get on new RVs is better than with used and you will likely have to deal with fewer issues and repairs with a new RV. It’s difficult to know what you’re going to get when you buy from a private owner. n Keep in mind a little bit of luxury can

go a long way. Don’t buy an RV that isn’t the right fit for you, just because it has all the fancy bells and whistles. n Buy local and buy from a dealer. Local dealers are so busy that if you buy out of town or out of country it can be difficult to find someone that will have time to service your RV. Dealers and their staff are licensed and are morally and legally obligated to make sure you’re sold something functional and in good working order.

Moving to a retirement residence? Plan, take tours C hoosing a retirement residence that’s right for you or your loved one is a big responsibility, however, it can also be very rewarding and exciting. Taking the right steps can alleviate feelings of anxiety and result in a wonderful new adventure. Once you have decided to begin your investigation, list all of the residences that are available in your community. You can gather this list by contacting resources within the community such as the Seniors Information Services or through the area’s senior’s papers. Give some thought to what you are looking for in a retirement residence. Even if you are in good health today, ask yourself if you will be prepared and willing to make another move should your care needs change in the future. Finding a campus of care that will allow you to age in place can be the ideal choice! Plan on touring as many retirement residences as you can. It is important to get the right “feel” for a place, be prepared to visit more than once. Talk to residents and staff to get their perspective on the lifestyle there. Pay close attention to how staff members interact with the residents and how the residents interact with each other. When touring, you should be invited for a complimentary lunch or dinner to experience the quality of food, if you are not invited, ask! How can I save money and water through smart irrigation?

W

ater meters got you down? Get Water Smart Irrigation and save water! Kamloops’ annual average per capita water use is approximately 800 litres per day which is 30 per cent higher than other Interior communities and much higher than the B.C. and Canadian averages. Are you really doing what you can to reduce water use in the landscape? A poorly designed/managed system could be costing you money and your landscape could be suffering because of it. Today products are available that can reduce your water use in the landscape by up to 50 per cent while maintaining a healthy landscape. If you can’t answer the following questions regarding your landscape then how can you ensure you are not under/ over watering your landscape? n How much water is your landscape using? n How much water can be stored in the soil that is readily available to the plant? n How long does your system need to run to replenish

a specific water deficit? Having your landscape audited and installing a weather based irrigation controller is a small investment that will pay for itself in water savings and your landscape will love you for it. n What is a Landscape audit? Review of the irrigation system layout and a precipitation catch can test will determine deficiencies, efficiency and how many inches per hour of water is applied. Checking soil conditions determines water holding capacity, infiltration rates and plant root zone depths. Noting topography for sloped or flat areas to determine any need for cycle and soak features to minimize runoff. Reviewing plant material, density and microclimates determines watering requirements.

Pronto Enterprises service manager Chris Lawrence and his team can help you save money and water. Right, a weather-based irrigation controller calculates daily evapotranspiration

This is all the water that needs to be replaced by your irrigation system. n What is a weather based irrigation controller?

n What is E.T.? Evapotranspiration is water loss through evaporation from the soil and transpiration from the plant material. These losses combined are calculated daily and provide you with a daily ET number.

A controller that has the ability to calculate daily ET using a remote weather station that calculates solar radiation, temperature, humidity, wind and rainfall to constantly and automatically adjust irrigation.

Let Pronto Enterprises work with you to help conserve water in your landscape. Our combined expertise and product knowledge will ensure your system is running as efficiently as possible saving you water while maintaining a healthy landscape.

The Tommy Gun hot shave — it’s a manly facial A

t Tommy Guns Original barrbershop, which opened in the Summit Shopping Centre in early July, hot shaves are one of the specialties.

Kristie Bayley, assistant manager of the Tommy Guns Red Deer location, was in Kamloops earlier this summer training staff at the new location how to do the perfect hot shave. A hot shave can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, and it always starts off with a consultation, which allows the barber to get to know the client’s skin type, and discover if he has any skin sensitivities. Then come the hot towels. The hot towel stays on for one or two minutes before the skin is exfoliated. Another hot towel goes on and when removed, the barber applies a close shave oil that helps soften the beard and prep for the shave. Two more hot towels are applied, followed by a preshave guard and another hot towel. Then the shaving cream — which has been warming with the towels — is applied, and the shave begins. Depending on the person, the shave is done against or with the grain, and when it’s all done a cold towel is placed on the face to seal the pores. When that towel comes off, the barber applies a post shave

balm to soothe the skin, and then a daily defense block with an SPF. Guys are treated to a relaxing face massage with the lotion. “We’ve taken the basics from a straight razor shave and modernized it creating exceptional personal service,” says Bayley. “It’s a manly facial — a way for men to come in and get pampered and relax.” The shave is so popular that Bayley says many clients come in weekly for the treatment, others reserve if for special occasions. “The whole point of us doing this is to give men an exceptional grooming experience.”

Save time, money and water T he average Canadian uses 326 litres of water per day. The average Kamloops resident uses about 800850 litres of water per day. In the summer that number rises to 1,800 litres of water per person, per day! Eighty per cent of the water consumed in the summer is used outdoors to water grass, hose driveways and wash vehicles. Lawn Care Tips: Proper lawn care can help reduce water usage and save you money. Mowing high — leaving grass about 5 – 7.5 cm tall — shades the roots and helps prevent evaporation. Leaving your grass clippings on the lawn, known as grasscycling, can help reduce watering and fertilizing. Lastly, water deeply, but infrequently. Your lawn only needs about 2.5cm of water per week to stay green, but try watering only one or two times a week. It encourages deep rooting and drought tolerance.

Xeriscaping doesn’t necessarily mean getting rid of green altogether, but a good way to cut down on water use is to alter your irrigation to match your plant’s actual water requirements. Get some ideas at the demonstration garden at 790 Harrington Road in Westsyde.

Xeriscape: By xeriscaping our individual landscapes, we use water more responsibly. Even if you are not ready to do a complete make-over, becoming more knowledgeable and aware of your existing landscape is a start. Here are two simple steps that will make a difference: n Alter your irrigation to match your plants actual water requirements, and make adjustments to minimize overspray onto hard surfaces. Get xeriscaping ideas by picking up a brochure from City Hall or visiting the demonstration garden at McArthur Island, or the one at 790 Harrington Road in Westsyde. n Consider Clover: Traditional lawns

can be costly and time-consuming to maintain. White clover can be a great alternative. It stays greener with less water, is immune to dog spots, attracts

beneficial insects and is inexpensive. Why not try an experimental clover lawn in a small area and see how much time, money, and water you save?

How can I take the anxiety out of vacation planning? B

ooking a trip can be overwhelming—there are hotels to consider, transportation to plan, events to book tickets for and so much more. The experts at Travelwise can help get rid of all the stress that comes with trip planning, so you can focus on relaxing and enjoying your holiday. Just follow these simple tips and you’ll be on your way to a memorable vacation. Travel agents offer full service travel planning and will be there for you from start to finish. Book with a travel agent, rather than online. Travel agents, unlike instructions on a Web page, are experts in understanding and deciphering the myriad of travel information, categories, and codes out there. It’s what they’ve been trained to do, and do every day. They are there to answer your questions prior to your departure and if you encounter any

problems along the way, your travel agent can help. The same can’t always be said for online booking sources.

Think about when you’d like to go on your trip and how much you’d like to spend. If you’re planning to travel during spring break or around the holidays, book well in advance. If you’re open to last minute plans, Travelwise can have you at your dream destination as fast as you can pack your bags. Think about what type of vacation you might want. Do you need some family bonding time? Or maybe an adults-only getaway? Do you want to be able to turn your brain off for a week or are you looking for something adventurous or even educational? The more information you can give an agent, the better they can help you pick the perfect trip!

Having trouble deciding between two or three vacation spots? Consider going in to talk with an agent. When you book with Travelwise, the agents have first hand knowledge about virtually every destination. They will ensure the decision making process is as easy as possible. Have travel insurance. A relatively small initial investment can save you hundreds or even thousands when you reach your destination. Some countries like Cuba require proof of medical insurance upon arrival so at the very least know if your destination has insurance requirements. The agents at Travelwise are your neighbours, offering personalized service. They are not only Travel Experts, they are your advocates and will be with you every step of the way.
