ental health includes psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. Our mental health also impacts how we handle stress, make decisions and relate and respond to others. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from toddlers to middle school students throughout adulthood. Alexandria Public Schools Community Education programs can support you and your families well being. We’re social beings, and we are not meant to live in isolation. A person’s social and residential communities are critical in order for a person to thrive. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a community provides a sense of belonging, support and purpose. Belonging Have you ever had the lonely sense of not belonging? Community Education has many opportunities to find “your people.” What do you like to do? Perhaps you enjoy yoga, reading, arts or are a new mom. The possibilities are endless, and you might find it easier to connect with others while doing activities you enjoy. Support Who can you turn to when you need help? Have you wanted to go back to school but needed academic and social support? Adult Basic Education (ABE) offers not only GED and English language skills but also supports adults who may want to brush up on literacy or math skills needed to go back to school or move up the corporate ladder. The ABE team has become the support system for many adults throughout the Alexandria Area. Who can you invite to take a course with you?

welcome to lifelong learning The “invite” will feel good to an old or new friend. Reach out to a new resident or colleague. They are craving not only a sense of belonging, but also need support from others. Purpose In a community, people fill different roles. Perhaps you’re the friend who enjoys cooking or the arts. Take one of our classes and share your masterpiece with someone else who may need to be loved on. Your kindness can provide a sense of purpose through bettering other people’s lives. Having purpose, and helping others, helps give meaning to life. We, as humans, crave connections with others. Knowing where to find “your people'' and who to call for support provides a sense of security. Knowing you are valued provides a sense of purpose. Community Education supports these qualities and more. Where you find community is up to you Yours in Community,

Intro to Ballet and Modern Dance (Gr. 3-12)

Experience a taste of ballet and modern dance. Ballet still stands as one of the main pillars of the dance world. The strength, beauty, and grace that defines ballet is timeless and continues to speak deeply to the human heart. Ballet is the foundation of many other forms of dance and is an essential part of any dancer's journey. Modern dance was born out of ballet, but has taken on a whole life of its own. It uses gravity and momentum to create powerful and dynamic movements. Modern allows creative expression from the individual dancer and is a beautiful medium for storytelling. Students will learn technical aspects of both ballet and modern as well as begin to discover their own unique style of creativity as dancers, all in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
