INTRODUCTION From the Desk of Beckie Simenson I want to sincerely thank the residents of Litchfield and our surrounding areas of Darwin, Forest City, Greenleaf and Kingston for supporting the recent Operating Referendum and Bond Referendum. This means voters approved supplemental funding for our operating budget, which will protect class sizes and educational programming, activities and athletics. Further, we will be able to make needed improvements to our existing buildings by remodeling classrooms, improving safety and proceeding with several major maintenance projects that will extend the life of our existing buildings. We are so fortunate to live in a community that values education and enables our students to become their very best. Dragon Proud! Beckie Simenson Superintendent Litchfield Public School Did you know that adults who participate in community education are 16% more likely to support the work of the School District?!? Thank you for your support!! (The Morris Leatherman Company Survey-2019)

EARLY CHILDHOOD What do I do if I have a child younger than 3 that I have concerns about? While all children grow and change at their own rate you may have concerns that your child is developing differently than other infants or toddlers at the same age. If you have concerns you can call 1-866-693-GROW (4769) Once a referral is made to the local early learning intervention program where you reside, you will be contacted to arrange a FREE screening to determine if your child is eligible for FREE, Help Me Grow, infant and toddler intervention services. This program is funded in part through the MN Department of Education and MN Department of Human Services.

“Building Blocks for Family and School Success” Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to kindergarten. The program is offered through Minnesota public school districts.

What’s the scoop on ECFE?  ECFE in Litchfield employs certified teachers and experienced support staff.  The Early Childhood Center is located in the Wagner Education Building 307 E 6th Street Litchfield, MN 55355

 Programs are for families with children birth to pre-k.  All programs include a rich variety of experiences that promote the growth and development of young children.  All programs involve parents AND children. Research and experience shows that children whose parents are involved early in their education do better in school.  Parent discussion time allows parents to connect, develop relationships, gain support, and learn new parenting skills.  We want to partner with parents to provide the best family education experience available. She works as a teacher in the Willmar School District and as an Adult Basic Education Teacher in the Litchfield School District for 10 years. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in 2002 from SMSU. Jennifer began making embroidery floss bracelets as a young girl. Some of her favorite things about teaching bracelet-making are seeing the determination of students to learn a new hobby and the excitement of making something they can share with friends and family. Cindy Rusch has been sewing for over 20 years and has worked as a tailor and stitcher for two costume designers in the metro. Cindy and her husband Wayne live in McLeod County where they own and operate a third generation dairy farm. Their diverse farm has cash crops, cows, bees and vegetables, all in season. When Cindy is not sewing, she is tending to her bees and in the summer you can find her at various farmers markets in the area. Charity Ross has been decorating cakes for over 20 years. Although she has worked professionally in a few bakeries over the years, she prefers the freedom of creativity that working from home provides, so she opened a cottage food business, “Creative Cakes by Charity”. AQUATICS HWY 12 Waves Ages 5-18

Tim Hroma, Nora Lagergren & Jocie Larson The philosophy of Highway 12 Waves is to produce well rounded kids that love to swim. We help nurture both the physical and emotional development of each child and work to measure improvement through instruction, training and preparation. Highway 12 Waves strives to develop an excitement about competitive swimming in each child, a respect for the abilities of others, an appreciation of the importance of hard work and self-discipline, a desire to constantly improve, the ability to win or lose graciously, and a pride in ones self and fellow swimmers. This is not a learn to swim program. Previous swimming instruction is generally required before a child will have the basic minimum skills. Level 3 swim lessons are encouraged prior to joining. There will be a skills evaluation and if the swimmer passes, the coach will place them into the appropriate group based on their skill level (swimmer must be able to perform the basic skills of freestyle and backstroke for the full length of the pool). If you are unsure of your swimmer’s abilities, you can still have them try out. Ripples (Primarily ages 8 and under)

Typhoons (Primarily ages 13 and older)

Skills taught include: tune stroke techniques, flip turns, open turns, IM transitions and starts, knowing three stroke drills for each stroke, learning proper technique for streamlines, pull-outs, and break-outs and improve conditioning and added yardage. “Between the exercise and the great produce it’s a good deal.”

Stockmen’s Greenhouse 60973 US-12 Litchfield, MN

Get to know your instructors! David Stottrup first became enamored with the acoustic guitar back in the ‘50’s, when he was 8 or 9, while listening to “Renfro Valley Roundup” which came out of Kentucky. The playing style was that of the Carter family, unadorned. In 1958, when he was a junior in high school, David looked longingly at a guitar in the Sears Roebuck wish book that cost $13.00. That Christmas, it was under the tree. It came in a triangular card box for a case and included a little booklet entitled “Learn the guitar in five easy minutes.” He knew no one in his town of 400 people who played guitar. There were no “YouTube’s”, but he had learned something about notes and rhythm from being in the high school band. The first songs he taught himself were “Wildwood Flower” and “I Walk the Line”. He loved folk music of the 1960’s and learned by playing guitar with other guitar players who were better than him. David will always be grateful for that $13.00 guitar under the Christmas tree back in 1958. Patricia Cram is the president and founder of Star Dreamer Ranch, a non-profit organization. She has over 30 years of experience training dogs in obedience, rally and agility. Pat’s background includes TTouch training for companion animals, AKC Canine Good Citizenship evaluator and trainer, Therapy Dog Training, testing, and supporting youth in 4H dog training and competition dog shows.
