Winter.Spring 2023 Program

From the Desk of the Programs Coordinator, Kelsi Hogg:

I would like to introduce myself as the new Programs Coordinator at Litchfield Community Education & Recreation. For the past 11 years I was lucky enough to teach high school/middle school mathematics in the Howard Lake Waverly Winsted School District. I also spent time coaching volleyball in the high school, JO and youth volleyball programs. My time at HLWW has provided me with a wide variety of experiences that have helped me in the transition to this new role.

Our family was drawn to the area since my husband is a Litchfield High School graduate and my wonderful in laws still live in town. As a family we enjoyed taking the kids to the Watercade Parades, Halloween Trunk or Treats, and the annual Egg Hunt in Central Park. When our own children became old enough to join activities, we signed them up for T ball, Gymnastics, Pond Hockey, Dancin’ Dragons and many more through Community Education. Growing up, my parents put me in just about every activity you could think of. This allowed me to discover what I was passionate about, learn how to work on a team and respect the volunteers that were willing to share their knowledge. As our kids reached school age, I was ready to contribute to the community where my children were attending school and made the switch to work in Litchfield.

The past few months, as Programs Coordinator, have been both challenging and rewarding. Everyone in the Wagner Education Building has been so supportive and encouraging. I have enjoyed getting to meet many new people who are passionate about volunteering their talents. I am so grateful for all the past contributors to Community Education for building our current program offerings.

I look forward to continuing to contribute to the Community Education team and to work on programming to meet the needs of our diverse community. If you have any thoughts on programming in our area, I would love to discuss those ideas with you!

Litchfield Community Education & Recreation involves citizens of all ages in inclusive, affordable and accessible opportunities for learning, leadership and community involvement.

HWY 12 Waves

Ages 5-18

The philosophy of Highway 12 Waves is to produce well rounded kids that love to swim. We help nurture both the physical and emotional development of each child and work to measure improvement through instruction, training and preparation. We strive to develop an excitement about competitive swimming in each child, a respect for the abilities of others, an appreciation of the importance of hard work and self discipline, a desire to constantly improve, the ability to win or lose graciously, and a pride in one’s self and fellow swimmers. This is not a learn to swim program. Level 3 swim lessons are encouraged prior to joining. There will be a skills evaluation and, if the swimmer passes, the coach will place them into the appropriate group based on their skill level (swimmer must be able to perform the basic skills of freestyle and backstroke for the full length of the pool). If you are unsure of your swimmer’s abilities, you can still have them try out.

Ripples (Primarily ages 8 and under)

This entry level program requires that participants are able to swim one length of a 25 yard pool freestyle or backstroke. Emphasis is on learning the four basic strokes, starts and turns. Skills taught include: four basic swimming strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly), kicking, diving, flip turns and open turns.

Sponsor-A-Child Scholarships Available

Did you know that over 30% of children in the Litchfield School District qualify for free or reduced lunch rates?

Litchfield Community Education & Recreation receives donations from generous individuals and businesses in our community to provide scholarships for youth activities, helping to offset the cost. Scholarships are based on income eligibility. We use the same guidelines as the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Free and Reduced rate eligibility is based on family income requirements set by the state of Minnesota in relation to national poverty guidelines. As you can imagine, families that are strained financially, eliminate items like recreation and enrichment opportunities that are non essential. Funds remain in place until all dollars are utilized. Contact our office for more information and to determine eligibility.
