OSPI Data State testing is required by state (RCW 28A.230.095) and federal law. The federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), enacted in 1965, is the nation’s national education law and shows a longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students. On December 10, 2015 President Obama reauthorized ESEA as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). These state and federal laws result in middle school students being regularly tested by the State to assess their progress as they move through school. State tests at the middle school level which fulfill the federal Every Student Succeeds Act include the following: • Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA): English Language Arts (ELA) and Math tests (6-8) • Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS): Science test (8)

Highlights Maywood Middle School opened for grades 6-8 in the fall of 1969. In the 2018-19 school year we served 1,175 students from the surrounding area that includes Renton Highlands, Newcastle and parts of Issaquah and Maple Valley. Students who are promoted from 8th grade at Maywood typically attend Liberty High School or Gibson Ek High School. MMS teachers offer students rich learning opportunities via engaging course work that is aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and closely matches the offerings at the other middle schools in the Issaquah School District. Core course offer students a strong foundation in essential skills and knowledge. Students can access advanced learning opportunities via self-select to meet student learning goals in Math Science and English Language Arts. With an experienced and expert teaching staff, students at MMS benefit from excellence and best practices in instruction. Math: All District middle schools have adopted a new math curriculum, Connected Math Program (CMP). Students choosing an advanced path may complete Algebra 1 or Geometry by the end of 8th grade. This allows Maywood students to enter high school on track to reach the highest levels of high school math. English Language Arts: Students engage in a CCSS aligned curriculum through the workshop model that allow students to receive high-quality instruction and to pursue topics and themes of greatest interest. Students explore fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Students engage in writing personal narratives, explanatory essays, argumentative essays, poetry, short stories and analytical essays. Advanced ELA courses with a higher level reading and writing demands are offered at each grade level.

Social Studies: Students study Ancient Civilizations, World History, Washington State History, US History and Civics. Skills emphasized include CCSS aligned speaking, listening, reading, writing learning activities. There is an emphasis on simulations, personal responsibility, critical thinking and civil discussions throughout grade levels. Science: Students study Life, Earth and Physical Science throughout their time at Maywood Middle School. Course are inquiry and lab based with an emphasis on all components of the scientific process. Students choosing the advanced path may complete Biology by the end of 8th grade for high school credit. World Language: First-year Spanish and Japanese are offered for high-school credit during a student’s 8th grade year. This allows our students to reach even high levels of world language learning in high school. Maywood has been recognized a 2015 and 2016 Washington Achievement Award Winner in closing the achievement gap for English Language Learners (ELL). Our ELL program serves 3% of the student body and provides high quality instruction and supports for students whose first language is not English. Our elective offerings are in the areas of fine arts, technology and fitness. Starting in the 2018-19 school year the Code.org class called Computer Science (CS) Discoveries was offered and has become a popular choice. And Career and Technology Education (CTE) electives based on “Project Lead the Way” (PLTW) curriculum are offered and include: Design and Modeling and Automation and Robotics I & II.

Improving Student Achievement Maywood is dedicated to helping all students make the learning gains necessary to be successful. Staff members work in collaborative teams to build instructional skill and to support students with academic struggles. Read 180 and Math 180 programs are designed to address the needs of students achieving below grade level in these subject areas. Additionally many teachers have class policies that allow for students to redo assignments and/or assessments in order to best capture what students know and are able to do. Additional interventions to assist students in making learning gains include: • After school Math Lab • After school Homework Club • After School 7th Period All In

What’s New Our Charger Time program meets daily with the exception of Wednesdays for 30 minutes and promotes the academic and social emotional wellbeing of our students. It is a time for reading, social emotional lessons, assignment retakes and redos as well as student led lessons on a variety of topics to support student success. Maywood has completed the following facility updates in the 2018-19 school year: • Installed water bottle filling station in cafeteria • Installed large screen monitors in commons and gym foyer • Mounted a four panel student created mural in commons • Added two additional classrooms • Installed and implemented new safety and security features and procedures

Extra-Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities We believe at Maywood that it is important for students to take part in opportunities outside the classroom in order to learn, grow and make positive connections. Almost all clubs, activities and athletic teams have a Maywood staff member as the advisor or coach. In the 2018-19 school year 62% of the MMS student body participated in a club, sport or activity. Students are encouraged to start new clubs and activities and to take part in sports teams regardless of their prior experience. Clubs & Activity Opportunities include: Extreme Strings Orchestra, Jazz Band, Chorus, Leadership, Honor Society, Yearbook, Drama, Math Club, Math Lab, Science Club, Robotics Club, Rubik’s Cube Club (2017 State Champions, 2019 National Champions), Green Team Club, Speaking for Success Club, Dungeons & Dragons Club, Athletic Opportunities include: Co-ed Cross Country, Girls’ Volleyball, Intramural Volleyball, Co-ed Softball, Wrestling, Girls’ Basketball, Intramural Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ Basketball, Intramural Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Soccer, Intramural Girls’ Soccer and Co-ed Track. Just so you know... Maywood Middle School adopted the Maywood Way in the 2015-16 school year to which staff and students have committed to “Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Respectful and Be Your Best”. These guide how we teach school wide expectations and how we recognize students for their positive behavior. Maywood benefits from a very supportive Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), Issaquah Schools Foundation (ISF) and parent community.

Assessment Two tests given to middle school students—The Smarter Balanced Assessment and the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science—help indicate how well Issaquah students are learning.

Smarter Balanced Assessment The SBA is a test that measures students’ progress toward College and Career readiness in ELA, literacy and math. The SBA consists of two parts: a computer adaptive test and a performance task. Writing is included at every grade level and students are asked to solve multi-step, real-world problems in math. Performance tasks ask students to determine an array of research, writing, and problem solving skills. The SBA results describe student achievement (how much students know at the end of the year). Results are reported in two ways: scaled scores and achievement levels. A scaled score is the student’s overall numerical score used to illustrate their current level of achievement. Based on their scaled scores, students

fall into one of four categories of performance called achievement levels. Levels 3 and 4 represent Meeting or Exceeding Standard and an “adequate or thorough” understanding of the learning standards. Levels 1 and 2 represent Not Meeting Standard and reflect “minimal or partial” understanding of the learning standards. The Grade Level Total ELA and Grade Level Total Math charts on the right-hand side of the page indicate the percent of students in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade who met or exceeded standard in ELA and Math on the SBA compared to the percent of sixth, seventh, or eighth grade students who met or exceed standard districtwide.

WCAS The WCAS fulfills the federal requirement that students be tested in Science once at the middle school level. The WCAS measures the level of proficiency students have achieved (what students know and can do) based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The WCAS assesses all three dimensions of the learning standards (Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts). The numbers on the chart represent the percentage of students in grade 8 who met or exceeded standard on the NGSS compared to the percentage of students in grade 8 who met or exceeded standard districtwide.
