Data from the Office of the Superintendent of Instruction (OSPI) State testing is required by Washington State (RCW 28A.230.095) and federal law. The federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), enacted in 1965, is the nation’s national education law and shows a longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students. On December 10, 2015 President Obama reauthorized ESEA as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). These state and federal laws result in elementary students being regularly tested by the State to assess their progress as they move through school. State tests at the elementary level which fulfill the federal Every Student Succeeds Act include the following: • Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA): English Language Arts (ELA) and Math tests (3-5) • Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS): Science test (5)

COVID-19 Pandemic In an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Governor Jay Inslee ordered all schools in Washington closed as of March 17, 2020. While the initial order mandated school closures only through April 24, 2020, the order was extended to the end of the 2019-2020 school year due to increasing COVID-19 infection numbers across the state. The Issaquah School District submitted its plan for remote learning at the end of March 2020, and remote learning began for all students on Monday, April 20. Students and staff moved to an online classroom setting, using various platforms such as SeeSaw, Classlink, and Office 365. District laptops and internet hotspots were distributed to families in need, and free meals were still provided for families qualifying for the Free and Reduced Lunch program at designated pick up spots around the district daily.
Highlights We sustained our status of a King County Level Three Green School. All 6th graders take the TechSmart class in combination with physical education and health. They have the choice of either taking a specific music elective (band, orchestra, or choir), or taking the directed exploratory program. In directed exploratory, students take one trimester of 6th grade boot camp where they focus on transitioning to middle school and developing leadership skills, one trimester of STEM sampler with hands on projects in our CTE lab, and one trimester of physical education. Our 7th and 8th graders had an opportunity to participate in our new CTE electives of App Design, Computer Science and Makerspace. Spanish is also available for 8th graders to take as a year-long elective. Beaver Lake students’ state assessment scores in Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and Science are consistently among the highest in Washington State. We started a CORE program for a selected group of seventh graders, where we partnered with the Sammamish YMCA to offer outdoor experiences for our students once a month on the weekend. Through our Bulldog Bonus Time Advisory Period, all students at Beaver Lake Middle School participated in SEL lessons this year through the second step curriculum. The CORE group of students were able to apply their thinking and life skill development while participating in challenging activities such as rock climbing, snowshoeing, and canoeing. This was also our fifth year of implementing WEB (Where Everyone Belongs), which is an orientation program allowing 8th grade students to be leaders for a group of 6th graders as they transition into Beaver Lake Middle School. We continue to highlight our students each month through our Most Valuable Bulldog Program where students are nominated by school staff to receive an award highlighting our Life Skills. Students also receive Buddy Barks for exhibiting our expectations of “Being Accountable Respectful Kind and Safe”. Each trimester, we partner with our PTSA to supply a celebration for all of our students at lunch.
Improving Student Achievement
The MATH 180 Courses are yearlong electives for middle school students who are enrolled in our Common Core Math Classes that might need additional support to meet standard. This is a comprehensive system of support with wholeclass, small-group, and individualized learning. Group instruction focuses on developing mathematical reasoning, communication, and problem solving while the technology-based activities focus on highly adaptive, individualized instruction and practices. Through mindset lessons and contextualized learning, MATH 180 provides an environment for fostering perseverance as students witness that their efforts do matter. Selected students will take MATH 180 as one of their electives. Beaver Lake Middle School offers Open Library, Monday through Thursday. The purpose of Open Library is to provide a structured and quiet atmosphere for homework completion with the support of a certificated teacher. We have implemented Learning Lunch where students can eat their lunch and work on missing assignments or make up assessments. Students can be referred by a teacher or choose to attend on their own. This Learning Lunch is staffed by a paraprofessional and students have access to computers and textbooks to complete work. We have created a PAWS (Productive Accountable Work Space) space, that is staffed full time by a paraprofessional. This room allows students the opportunity throughout the day to have extended time on assessments, have a quieter room for working, to deescalate, have access to laptops, or to take a break if needed. We have a food and snacks available for any student who comes to school hungry and needs something to eat. This multi-purpose space supports the whole child at Beaver Lake. Our teachers continue to create common assessments and are focusing on writing student growth goals to monitor student learning. We are focusing on reasoning skills with our students across the grade levels. Our staff has engaged in conversations about how we are going to provide multiple opportunities for our students to show proficiency.
What’s New
This year’s ASB theme was “Change the Tide” and our students demonstrated that theme daily! We focused on the Positive Behavior and Social Emotional Support at Beaver Lake Middle School. Our staff spent this year learning about student ACES, and we developed our common Beaver Lake Behavioral Expectations, that we are calling “Buddy Barks”. Students at Beaver Lake will “Be Accountable, Respectful, Kind and Safe” We are the Beaver Lake Bulldogs. We had Beaver Lake Middle School Students participate in our State Geography Bee and National Spelling Bee as well as the PTSA sponsored Reflections Program.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Yearbook Club, Art Club, Jazz Band, Robotics Club, Geography and Spelling Bee’s, Math Club, Green Team, Sewing Club, Engineering Club, Game Club, Rubik’s Cube Club, Safe Place and Chess Club. Athletics include, softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track, and wrestling.
State Testing Two tests given to middle school students—The Smarter Balanced Assessment and the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science help indicate how well Issaquah students are learning.
COVID-19 Disclaimer
Due to early facility closure and suspension of end of year testing, 2019-2020 assessment data is not available. The data below relfects the school’s scores for the 2018-2019 school year.
Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA)
The SBA consists of two parts: a computer adaptive test and a performance task. Writing is included at every grade level and students are asked to solve multi-step, real-world problems in math. Performance tasks ask students to determine an array of research, writing, and problem solving skills. The SBA results describe student achievement (how much students know at the end of the year). The Grade Level Total ELA and Grade Level Total Math charts on the right-hand side of the page indicate the percent of students in sixth, seventh, and eigth grade who met or exceeded standard in ELA and Math on the SBA compared to the percent of students who met or exceeded standard in ELA and Math district-wide.

The WCAS fulfills the federal requirement that students100 be tested in Science once at the elementary level. The WCAS measures the level of proficiency students 80 have achieved (what students know and can do) based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The WCAS assesses all three dimensions of the 60 learning standards (Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts). The numbers on the chart represent the percentage of 40 students in grade 8 who met or exceeded standard on the NGSS compared to the percentage of students in 20 grade 8 who met or exceeded standard district-wide.
