This course will focus on the group of infectious diseases that harbor the greatest burden worldwide and/or of those that represent some of the greatest challenges for the global health community.


Infectious Diseases and Global Health Programme

Practical details

• Managing infectious diseases in limited-resources settings

Location: Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona C/ Casanova, 143, Barcelona

• Management of sexually transmitted diseases

Dates: 3 - 26 May 2016

• Respiratory infections in the tropics: melioidosis and fungal diseases

Timetable: Monday to Thursday, 9.00 - 11.00 h

• Tropical ophthalmology: trachoma

Language of instruction: Spanish/English

• Tropical ulcer

Tuition fees: 450€ + University taxes

• Meningitis and meningococcal vaccination • Neonatal infections

Length: 28 contact hours / 47 hours of independent study

• Uncomplicated malaria

Credits: 3 ECTS

• Severe malaria

• Challenges in the treatment and control of malaria: fake drugs and drug resistance • The challenge of diagnosing tuberculosis. Childhood TB • Treatment of tuberculosis in the 21st century: drug resistance and direct observed treatment

Assessment

• Case study: outbreak investigation and control

• Written exam: 80%

• Clinical challenges of the HIV pandemic in its 4th decade

• Class participation: 20%

• Challenge: HIV/TB co-infection and other neglected opportunistic infections

Admission requirements

• Pediatric HIV • Emerging infectious diseases: chikungunya, dengue, Mers coronavirus

Students or professionals with some level of medical, paramedical or biomedical scientific background who wish to broaden their perspective of the various subject areas of major infectious diseases.

• Chagas disease: clinical management of a silent disease

Application

• Other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) of importance: leishmaniasis, human African trypanosomiasis (HAT)
