A Growth Spurt for FLL
In addition to its major infrastructure improvements, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport continues to grow its airline portfolio, welcoming major international airlines including Emirates Airlines and British Airways in the last year alone. Additionally, the airport’s top three carriers, JetBlue, Spirit and Southwest, have committed to expanding their route schedules, with JetBlue to increase from 85 departures a day last year, to 140 departures a day by 2020. Southwest’s new five-gate international concourse at Terminal 1 recently launched service to Belize, a new international route for the airport, and the airline has plans to increase service to 50 destinations from FLL over the next five years.
In 2016, FLL made history when JetBlue launched the first scheduled commercial flights between the United States and Cuba in over 50 years.

Brightline will run with biodiesel fuel sourced from FPL through a two-year contract. FPL will supply 2 million gallons a year of biodiesel, a cleaner-burning fuel produced from renewable sources that is known to have a number of benefits. Beyond being cost-competitive, biofuels have been found to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating the negative effects fossil fuels have on the environment.

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) Port Everglades recently received approval from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners to begin a $437.5 million capital improvement project, the most expensive in the port’s history. The Southport Turning Notch Expansion (STNE) project will add new berths for larger cargo ships and install rail infrastructure for new Super Post-Panamax cranes. It will lengthen the existing turn-around area for big cargo ships from about 900 feet to 2,400 feet, making space for up to five new cargo berths. The port is also purchasing three Super Post-Panamax container-handling gantry cranes that will help meet the demand of the massive capital improvement project.
“We will now be able to meet the demands of our current customers and work with them to grow their businesses, in addition to providing the infrastructure necessary to attract new customers.” - Steven Cernak, Port Everglades/FTL chief executive and port director
