DRYFO URBANISM CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA Cartagena is experiencing rapid urbanization due to exponential touristic and industrial growth. This urbanization consists of a population that is 70% informal. Many of these citizens have infilled the Cienaga de la Virgen with garbage to create land in close proximity to the historic and touristic center, endangering critical ecosystems of mangroves and the dry forest. Dryfo Urbanism proposes to plant the dry forest within the expansion zone of Cartagena as the botanical armature to curtail development pressure off the mangroves and provide the framework for future settlements. Leveraging the existing vegetation of the grazing land and the skills of displaced citizens, this proposal imagines a future where the rich biodiversity of the Colombian landscape is integrated into the public realm. INTENSIFYING INFRASTRUCTURE SLATE BELT, PENNSYLVANIA Infrastructure has generally facilitated the movement or flow of one thing, and one thing only. From aqueducts, to rail lines and highways, these monofunctional corridors have yet to reach the multifunctional quality of the designer’s imagination. In addition to their limited use, their short term life spans leave them replaced with reoccurring trail-like projects. Electric transmission lines and pipelines do not deviate far from this trend. Intensifying Infrastructure proposes to leverage these respective easements, as pollinator and productive corridors. Through a thoughtful selection of pollinator attracting plants, doubling up as biofuel, these necessary elements could expand beyond their limited functionality. Intensifying Infrastructure seeks to design for those who don’t have a voice, for those who cant advocate against regional agendas, yet work arduously for our benefit - for pollinators. Instead of continuing practices of monocultural farming devastating pollinator population, a variety of switch grass species are implemented to increase pollinator abundance and create an industry of biofuel production.

Choreographing a color themed flower calendar for pollinators, each plants needs of aspect and moisture were identified on an abstract diagram. This logic was then applied to the site responding to the existing conditions. A path with sectional variation was then designed to create enriched eye level relationships according to the plant height blending nature and culture in a new orchestration. JU

RECOMPOSING THE EDGE RED HOOK, BROOKLYN The Port of Red Hook faces development pressure from Carroll Gardens and the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Red Hook. Recomposing The Edge proposes to tackle the inefficiencies of the current layout of the port through consolidation, opening up land for development and public space along the waterfront. Existing warehouse buildings are retrofitted to maintain the industrial character of Brooklyn, yet create a diversified mixed-use, flood protected neighborhood. ONEPRIZE:STORMPROOF - FINALIST In light of the events of Hurricane Sandy, Terreform One organized the ONEPRIZE competition seeking proposals to explore the social, economic, and ecological possibilities of urban transformation while preparing for a recurrence in catastrophic weather patterns at the city scale. Our approach was solely dedicated to the evolution of New York City based on the political decisions of the last 10 years. Rezoning to accommodate for rapid population increase and loss of manufacturing crippled the system New York was founded on and made way for a multitude of developer-driven high rise structures. Our proposal relies on what it means to be a city of 8 million and takes into account waste production at the human scale. ISSUE
Looking at the evolution of New York, our built intervention on Manhatta left us prone to flooding. This proclivity is due to the quantity of natural underground streams enabling water to penetrate the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vulnerable man-made waterfront. Viewing garbage as a potential solution, [CONTAINED] repurposes it as an abundant renewable resource to stormproof the city. The current $1 billion industry of exporting garbage to neighboring states is redirected to the waterfront in shipping containers, creating a stormproofing layer. Serving as an anticipatory infrastructure for our city, in a span of only 10 years, [CONTAINED] will defend.

CALIBRATING FRAGMENTED TERRITORIES BROOKLYN, BROOKLYN,NYNY Currently fragmented from the rest of Brooklyn, Red Hook would benefit from the sinking of the existing Gowanus Highway into a tunnel. Repurposing this tainted infrastructural element would help stitch the two sides of Brooklyn. Through lamination of the existing highway grounds, inhabitants would have a new ground from which to experience the city. The incorporation of both vertical and traditional farming would reinvigorate Red Hook. The collected C02 from the extension of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel would feed algae pods, producing biofuel, further increasing Red Hookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newfound productivity. From the initial stages of the project, the intent was to follow the voices of local press and Red Hook citizens who pleaded for the construction of a tunnel and the demolition of the highway. However, looking at the success of the High Line, the potential for repurposing of the Gowanus Highway seemed endless. Stratifying buildings off the highway to the existing context would visually connect the previously disparate cities of Red Hook and Carroll Gardens. By stitching the existing vacant lots together with urban farms, not only would such crime-driven spaces be erased, but a local network would be established working in conjunction with other parts of Brooklyn. New experiences such as underground libraries and cafes with views of the tunnel circulation would promote interaction with an element of the past.

RANCHO MISSION VIEJO MISSION VIEJO, CALIFORNIA 25 miles south of the John Wayne Airport and only 9 miles to the Pacific Ocean, Rancho Mission Viejo Development LLC is developing the third phase of their Reserve lands into a 2,200 acre master planned community. This proposal includes 7,000 residential units and 4.5 million square feet of non-residential uses. SWA was hired to develop three schemes which developed as Big Hill, Big Trail and Big View. Each explored a unique identity for the site. Fly-through animations and virtual reality stills were produced for each corresponding scheme in preparation of a large client ‘Ideation’ event using Rhino, Lumion and AfterEffects. Woodbine Racetrack is being diversified into a mixed-use district. The 684 Acres site has a comparable area to downtown Toronto and serves as an important ecological connection between the Humber river and Mimico Creek corridors. 08.2016
As an intern at the Laguna Beach office, I was tasked with designing the recreational corridor serving as the stormwater catchment for the site. Through several iterations, the grading, circulation and tree canopy were considered with the supervision of the office principals. FOLINE DALLAS, TEXAS The Trinity Forest has long been the forgotten gem of Dallas. Instead, it has served as a giant landfill that has since been ‘covered up’ with the Trinity River Audobon Center which doesn’t fully acknowledge it’s location in its name, and a handful of golf courses used by the privileged few. These examples depict a city that continues to turn its back on the existing 10,000 acre natural asset. With investments allocated to the Trinity River of over $300 million dollars in two Santiago Calatrava bridges, and another projected $250 million for the naturalization of the channelized river into a 285-acre park, the Trinity Forest needs to be reframed. It needs a change in perspective. Foline seeks to reverse this trend by creating an elevated structure to create new views of the forest. Additional bike trails do not do justice to the enormity of the forest. With the Emerald Ash Borer devastating a significant amount of the tree population, people need a new viewpoint as an attractor to value the largest urban hardwood forest in the country. Leveraging existing infrastructural corridors, this 1.6 mile structure proposes to stitch the disconnected crime struck communities of Dallas to the rising arts district as a platform for social interaction, forestry education and cultural celebration.

Maybe it’s about UNBECOMING everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place. 2014 was a year of significant traveling in my life. Starting with a 4-month backpacking trip through South America en route to the World Cup in Brazil, this ongoing collection of pictures doesn’t document the tourist attraction or view, but frames a moment worth remembering through a multiplicity of landscapes.
