Tensile Structures ‘Hug-a-tree’
3
Objective
The objective of the course was to understand the form generation of tensile strutures and to create a functional space for the same. The space selected was for the conservation of trees, an area where people would “hug-a-tree “, connect with them and help in preserving the ever diminishing trees in urban areas. This is the mood board for the activities taking place in the space. 4

Process Based on the research, a list of activities was made which would take place in the space. Different activities were aimed at different age groups so there would be something for everyone. Taking inspiration from nature and with context to the function of the space, form explorations were made. Key words:

Compost and Washrooms
The conservatorium will encourage connect to trees, planting and conservation of trees and bonding with nature. The aim is to get the younger generation involved so they will implement these changes to their lifestyle.

Objective The objective of the course was to design an exhibition for the performing arts of Maharashtra. The exhibition would be a celebration of the rich culture and heritage of the state. It would provide information about the arts and a platform for the artists involved. 10

Maharashtra has a rich tradition of folk performing arts spanning over a thousand years. Some art forms are purely devotional and some others are purely for entertainment while some are meant for spreading social awareness. Despite the advent of 21st century hi-tech communication, many of these performing arts are still popular in rural areas. This permanent exhibition is an effort towards introducing these rich traditions to the urban world with the intent of promoting awareness about a culture so near yet almost unknown. Anticlockwise:

The Structure ‘Marathicha Mrudgandha’
(The fragrance of the Marathi soil) The core activity, the performance area, is in the center of the exhibit. Each of the arts have their own designated areas and the audience moves from one room to another, expreiencing first hand, the atmosphere that surrounds each of these performances. Every art is unique and yet they all have a connect to Maharashtra, its culture and the people. The exhibit provides a platform for these arts to come together.

Space Transformation ‘Fold’
15
Objective The objective of this course was to create a space inspired by a designer or architect. After analysing the designer, his signature work and methods, an inspired space was made. Issey Miyake was the subject of this project. He is a Japanese fasion designer who takes inspiration from folding and origami. His work includes clothes, acessories, perfumes and lamps. The fabric he uses undergoes a lot of treatment and process to acquire the required form and texture. 16
Process Issey Miyakes clothes fold and transform into symmetrical geometric shapes. Folds were used as elements which define the form and creates light and shadow which enhances it. Based on this, a space for experimental folding was created. This space would allow designers to experiment with folding and make it an integral part of their design. The applications range from furniture, architecture, lifestyle products, appliances and even in retail spaces for branding. The centre for experimental folding, ‘Fold’ will include an introduction to folding and its application, a display of work by the deisgners, the materials used, and work stations where people would meet and collaborate. A retail store would sell some of the products and materials on display. The exterior is inspired by his handbags which are made on a grid of triangles

Work areas
The Structure The plan of the space was made from the exterior. It is a total area of 300sqm. The space allows area for display of work in the centre and work stations along the sides. This way, the visitors get to interact with the designers and see the work in progress. The tables in the space are made from bent Corian textured like granite and the chairs are flux chairs, which are collapsable. This allows fexibility in the arrangement, inspired by transformation of Issey Miyakes clothes. The exterior will be made from cement sheets and will have sky lights which will enhance the play of light in the space. 18
The Model This paper model represents the exterior and interior of the space. Scale of the model is 1:54. The model was made using origami techniques. It reflects the play of light and shadow shown in his fabric.

Nature and Form ‘The Lionfish’
20
Objective The objective of the course was to create a simplified and abstarcted form of the lionfish without losing its characteristics. Taking inspiration from nature, 2D and 3D forms were developed. These forms bring out the unique features of the fish while using minimal elements and bringing them together aesthetically. 21
2D Process The form of the lionfish was studied to understand what characteristics makes it so unique. By simplifing and abstracting the various elements, this form was derived. KEY WORDS:
GRACE, FLOW, DANGER
22
3D Process Using the same attributes, 3D form explorations were made. The most prominent feature of the fish, dorsal fins, were the inspiration for these forms. They try to capture the grace with which this fish swims while keeping the edge of its venom.
23
The Model This is the final 3D form derived from the Lionfish, keeping in mind FLOW, GRACE and DANGER. This form is made from transclucent acrylic which mimics cartilage of the fish. It is graceful, and flexible but with an edge, representing the movement as well as the venom of the fish. This form can be an installation in a Naval Building representing the grace and lethal power of the Navy.
