The learning center

Jaipur ArchitecT/INTERIOR DESIGNER .

In India, high school studies are taken a bit too seriously. Parents pressure their children to perform well in academics while extracurricular actives have taken a back seat. Here’s where the Learning Center steps in-a space where children can go beyond their curriculum to pick up creative or technical skills that grabs their interest. It’s a performance space, a creative space, a fun space but most importantly a space between school and home.

Organic Flexibility

Spill- out informal space

Spill- out interaction space

The space right outside the door is an interaction space for children. If its between 2 classrooms then children with different interests are able to interact. Giving each classroom its own courtyard so that classes can expand into informal spaces.

The climate in Jaipur can get very hot

Combination of the two

Induced Flexibility

Cooking room turns to a pop-up cafe

Allowing the building itself to change will ensure the children to use it according to their needs. The flexibility of these spaces gives the children control of their education.

Mutual shading allows spaces between the building to be cooler

Dance room turns into a performance space

Passive Design Techniques North facing windows

No direct sunlight through skylights

Applying passive techniques such as, skylights, pergolas in public areas or even the orientation of the windows can help reduce the use of energy drastically.

Earth burming further cools the building and pergolas further shade the spaces in between

Pushing the building into the ground helps keep it cool due to the earth around it 01

The Site

A set of predecided programs have been placed strategically on the site. The more active and louder zones are on the ground floor, while the other more studious quieter functions are on the lower floor. This allows the two functions to co-exist together without disturbing each other. The green enveloping the Center provides clean air and cools the area down. The grid of the Jaipur old city is laid into the site as it responds well to the environment

The building is extruded to different heights, imitating the old forts.

Outline of the building is formed through zoning and programmatic needs. The building is broken up to allow circulation and wind

A system of courtyards are created. A sunken courtyard allows the rest of the function to go in the basement taking advantage of the cooling needs of the earth around it

The courtyards are all connected to allow the children and parents to walk through the entire space

PARQUE SONAR

Emergent Cultural Infrastructure- MEXICO CITY SECOND SEMESTER, M.ARCH. STUDIO HEAD - ANYA SIROTA Mexico city has a long history of music being used to get people together. From it’s rock and roll movement to it’s punk disco parties, these genres are very much alive in the underground hipster and also very populous ways. We were inspired by these sounds and this history with music and sound and it framed our interests while looking for a site. On the site itself, we sought to to preserve the vernacular architecture found on the site that has diverse emergent program, but enhance and augment it by introducing flexible, heterogeneous, and juxtaposed programs and space. The existing programs on the site were disconnected– the canal, the church, the senior

09

Ishan Pal

Architecture Portfolio

2020

senior community center, and park and we saw a need to connect them by amplifying their experience. Our diverse set of interventions could help bond people to the canal where all the elements could be celebrated and help each other. The existing emergent program of jazz workshops on the site at the Jacalito Café generated the use of music and sound as a social connector between the community and canal. We believe that music and sound can blur the differences in class and the architecture offers a radical mixity of program, people, and places. The different genres of music are free to come together to give space for new genres to be borne by crazed experimentation.

We have used arches, a form that represents invitation, strength and unity to symbolize our shared spaces. We were inspired by arches that exist at Eastern Market - they mark the entry and identity of the market and we want to build upon that identity by utilizing them in a contemporary way to signify the shared spaces in The Living Collaborative.

In this proposal, we maintained the original axis of the market as the guiding element, where it expands into The Shed forming different spaces of economic, societal and ethnic interaction. While the Shed function as a market and focuses on trade, Workshop is a space for cultural production, a necessity to maintain the authenticity of the market. 03

Commune @ Alfred Commune @ Alfred caters to single people who are constantly on the move and are looking for a community to share experiences with. The floor plan functions as a living room with public spaces interspersed with individual units.

Commune @ Division: Commune @ Division functions similar to a typical three bedroom apartment but each resident would have a private entry to their bedroom space. Your private space would include a bedroom, a bathroom, and balcony and in the center of the bedrooms is a lofted living area that is shared by 3 residents that includes a double height living room, a kitchen, and dining area.

Commune @ Alfred There are two types of individual units, the Single and the Dorm. Both units are designed to be as compact as possible so that the extra space can be added to the living spaces where we imagine the community to come together and bond. .

burlington city / hall

BURLINGTON, VERMONT

FIRST SEMESTER, M.ARCH. STUDIO HEAD-MALCOM MUCULLOUGH Every city has an identity. Shouldn’t the city halls then represent that identity? Some of the greatest city halls become unanimous with the image of the city and also culturally relevant to the city. It’s a city hall thats for, of and by the city. The new city hall for Burlington, wants to make a similar democratic stance. It almost wants the city the identify with it beyond it’s civic use. While it relates to the now, it also very obviously suggests the architecture of the city should be more forward-looking, unlike the faux-historic brick boxes that people greenery construct in the city.

25

Ishan Pal

Architecture Portfolio

2020

The proposal takes a bold stance to move away from the historic grid of the city to connect the pedestrian market on Church Street to the much loved farmers market in the plaza, allowing the people and the culture to flow through the hall, encouraging people to move through the city hall and form a long term connection the building. Further, the Ethan Allen Firehouse now has space for bigger and better artworks which can all the viewed from the street itself. To do so, the middle floor of the firehouse was removed.

Movements through the site dictate the massing of the new city hall. Most prominently, making a connection between the Church Street and the Plaza

Height of the forms are dictated by the required sq-ft of the program. These forms are expanded along the same axis to accommodate city hall functions along side the

The middle floor of the firehouse is removed to accommodate larger artworks. Instead the gallery is expanded on the ground plane along the church street

Two towers are made for two types of circulation. One for the city hall offices the taller one is for the public to go to a viewing deck and special event space on top

Pitched roofs are added inspired from the roof style of the historic buildings it sites next to, and to give an essence of nostalgia

A min entry is added on the church street and the gallery is pushed back a little to allow the firehouse and the new city hall to stand out

KNOWLEDGE hub/ LIBRARY

Gurgaon Thesis project The site within Gurgaon is located in an area that is clearly demarcated as “Public Utilities” in the Haryana Master plan 2031. It is close to the Huda Metro Station, about seven hundred meters. The extension of the metro rail also passes through the road right in front of the site. The demographic around the site is diverse. middle and upper classes of Gurgaon. The Kanhai village is located close to the site. The aim of the project is to make a public library appeal to all the surrounding demographic. There are no libraries in Gurgaon - which is why I chose this as my thesis topic. The project aims to be more than just a library. It’s purpose is to be a space of knowledge while also serving as an escape.

The approach to the site was clearly understood. Also the activity around the site helps in understanding where people generally hang out which could help in understanding how to get them into the site Active zones Taxis parked (hence driver hang out here) Designated parking Main pedestrian routes

Auto-rickshaw waiting spots

Un-built Land

The site is located next to a vast piece of unused land which is going to be a school. Hence the library would be useful for them too. Not much green around this area, so it might make sense to provide a green oasis here. Green patches, parks

The project has diverse programs centred around knowledge development. It contains a playschool, which allows children to be around a library from a young age. Giving access to a library encourages a love for reading from an early age, leading to an attachment to the building itself. There is also lack of free congregation spaces not only around the site, but in Gurgaon or discuss. There's even a lack of a cafes or restaurants here to do so. These programs and spaces would invite more people to enter the site and even encourage intellectual interaction. The form of the library has been derived from a pile of discarded books in boxes. These forgotten testaments now shape the very thing that might inspire people to read again. Next to it, the playschool’s facade mirrors a bookshelf. The children inside are just like books, having great potential with the most amazing stories.

The building is divided to allow pedestrians to move through the site

The axis’s are altered to create interest. zones of interaction are formed

Those zones are created into a series of courtyards which are connected by corridors

The ground plane of the site is based on a system of courtyards each with their own function. All the programs spill into these spaces to make them into high interaction zones making them very active areas. This will allow people to get interested and enter the site curious about the activity. Making this ground plane active is crucial to this project so as to invite as many people to join this journey towards shared learning as a community. Functions like the library go in and out of the public pavement to break the monotony and allow more people to enter and see what's going on in the building. Ground Floor Library Interior View The ground floor of the library is a combination of casual reading and digital archives. The staircase leads you up to the higher floors which contain more research and educational books, as anyone coming to libraries to read is normally there for research. The ground floor leads to the children’s library, so parents can leave them there and come to this zone. Further down from this area is the space with the computers where people can come and work. The library is brightly lit, and all direct sunlight comes through the ‘jaali’ which prevents overheating of the space.

The Maze The Maze is the main sunken courtyard right next to the reading room. It is an area that can be used as an escape from the outside noisy distracting world as a safe space. With the lack of public spaces in Gurgaon, the maze allows for anyone to use it without any cost. Its concrete walls gives you a sense of enclosure, yet the cut outs in the walls allow these spaces to be safe and prevent you from getting lost.

BGIF OFFICE

Gurgaon ARCHITECT/ INTERIOR DESIGNER OF THE PROJECT The BGIF (Bhajanlal Global Impact Foundation) was establishing itself with a physical location in the basement of a commercial building. Most of what they do is based on green initiatives and argicultural research to help the rural population of Haryana. The clients requirements was to deliver a space that makes people feel like they are working in a bright space even though it was in a basement. We brought the ‘happier touch by the use of colours and the layour of the space was developed for colaboration. Further we installed a 10ft green wall which can survive on the lights in the space itself and a automatic waterpump which is located in the seat infront of it. This was a turnkey project and everything was designed by us. Even the logo for the foundation.

CADE (Center for Architecture, Design and Education) moves into its new home, a soaring 34 storey glass tower which is a composition of both transparent and translucent boxes. The expandable translucent boxes intercept the seamless transparent box advantageously to create a dynamic facade which is both animated and programmed. This building will offer to us the past, present and an opportunity to facilitate the youth to re-imagine the future of Chicago.

The building's most original feature is the Loop and the manner in which it transcends through the tower. CADE's Loop will be a spectacle for the riders, pedestrians and passerby as a reminiscent of the Chicago's historic loop which touched major landmarks. The seamless transparent atriums are interconnected within the tower allowing a visitor to move from one destination to another through connectors.

Christened as the LOOP the tower is a continuous public performance as the program expands, collapses and overlaps within the transparent and translucent boxes. As and when needed, the studios and display spaces are made to morph into the space which the situation demands for. The design provides a model for a new educational system infringing from the routine of educational hierarchy and systematically creating opportunities for programmed and nonprogrammed spaces to mix. The flexible learning environment are a milieu of combinations to meet demand and supply. The entire building almost seems to collapse into one.

The Green link

Hauz Khas, A T.O.D PROJECT 3RD year. 2nd term project

Transit Oriented Development proposes mixed-use and higher density. This aims to provide a better, cleaner greener lifestyle. To propose such a drastic change in Delhi, the start point should also be drastic. It should be iconic. It should represent responsible and better development for the future. Hence I propose the Green Link. Inspired by New York high line, this green path goes through a mixed use project and through a sky scraper, representing the amalgamation of future development with sustainability.

Hauz Khas Metro Station. The T.O.D is designed around this metro. A commercial area is perfect for the people coming from here. A hotel would work well being so close to the metro.

The Skyscraper rises from the greenery within and forms an iconic image in the skyline. There is a need for Delhi to build higher buildings to optimize space. However this does not mean that we must copy the fully glazed language of skyscrapers around the word. The skyscraper parts to allow green gardens every 10 floors which allows this building to breath and even for birds to find a place to rest.

The triangular shape allows the hotel to get the best views

Community Center

Bhojpur, Bhopal during my fourth semester

The village Bhojpur is situated on the outskirts of the city of Bhopal. Despite its rural status, this village has a negligible crime rate, and is free of any garbage as they re-use all their materials. Due to rapid modernisation, they are not being able to sustain themselves for long in this community as people are leaving the village for better jobs in the city. A community center that could allow people to advance and develop as a society and within their own village would help this issue. To empower the women with knowledge and to empower everyone with the facilities and opportunities to grow within this environment would be the best option for them.

The site is situated at the bottom of the village and would cater to the needs of the village such as an everyday store, a doctors sell the clothes they make. Besides that a library for the villagers to gain knowledge and advance on their own

This road is the one that leads to the famous Bhojpur temple, a very famous tourist attraction. People pass this village without noticing it at all. The village could take make use of this fact and provide facilities such and tourist shops, restaurants and a tourism center to help support this village

The site needs a setback from the road to put a patch of trees and greenery between cars and the community center.

Paths are cut through the site, mimicking the dams that Bhojpur is known for, also allowing people to walk through the site and get deep into it.

By pulling up the spaces between the paths, it creates the main blocking for the site.

These enormous blocks were then cut into to worm niches and courtyards where people could enter the site from or enter into the building.

The block is lifted off the site to form one main courtyard in the center of the project. Additionally the space behind the library is filled with earth to form a first floor courtyard to house other functions.

The first floor is extruded and entry to the first floor from both sides is given.

The form of the building is inspired by the village that it is set in. The materials are also common with those buildings. This provides a sense of comfort for the locals. At the same time bringing these functions/programs to one spot makes this center highly modern and adaptable. The spaces provided are generally larger than that of the village and allows higher number of people to congregate. The building at the same time allows tourists to come in and purchase items from the shops (made by the locals) and eat at the restaurant which would support the rural economy.

INDUCED KNOWLEDGE DISSEMINATION TO WOMEN While the men in the village read newspapers and discuss the happenings of the world the women mostly are doing household chores. The idea of this community center is to automatically include the women as part of that knowledge dissemination due to proximity.

INFORMAL PORCH TYPOLOGY The porch typology is taken from the village itself as it gives them a sense of comfort in these spaces

THE WELL + THE LIBRARY The women normally go uphill to get water for the household chores and drinking from the well. By shifting the well’s location close to the open library, it allows women to be in close proximity to intellectual discussions. Also due to the post surrounding villages can be shared easily. This could incite interest amongst the women to learn about news from far away places and encourage awareness.

Shiv Agarwal Farm House New Delhi r+d studio (internship) This project was a redesign of an old farmhouse. The brief given was to use the same structure as the previous house, but to give it a completely modern look. This was one of the projects during my internship that I was heavily involved with. I worked directly under the partners and made most of the construction drawings. Also with regular site visits I oversaw the construction of those drawings.

Commercial Center-The Plaza Bhiwadi, Ashiana Gulmohar Independent Project The site is located right next to one of Ashiana Housing project in Bhiwadi. The brief of the project was to create a commercial center but make the first floor enticing enough for people to want to buy those shops too. I did this by making a massive flight of stairs which lead up to a courtyard on the first floor. The flight of stairs acts like a big public seating space, and by having a courtyard on the first floor rather than the ground, people might be encouraged to go there.

Physical Models During B.Arch 3rd Semester: Time Problem Aim: Make an architectural space based on a musical track (provided by the faculty) The track I chose was an electronic track. The nails struck hard into the base represents the hard repetitive baselines, stung together with a lighter beat represented by the string. The mesh represents the overlaying tune which flowed around and over the beat. The chain on top is the repetitive beat that ties the nails, the beat and the tune together. Finally the staples represent the repetitive minimalist tune that comes in the end and eventually fades out.

2nd Semester: Residential Design Aim: Design a house for a ceramic artist in the Biodiversity region of Gurgaon The site is located in a rocky zone with a small lake at the edge. The house design represents the rocks jutting out of the ground. Its jagged and irregular cuts mimic the sharp features of the landscape. The walls are thick and made of rammed earth which makes the form and the texture of the house almost disappear into the landscape. The ceramic artist’s house looks almost like it’s been sculpted out of the ground itself, making the user and the architecture intimately connected.

Artworks + Freelance Graphic Design The artworks on the left are independent projects. The graffiti work was done for clients, in offices and cafes. The sketches are works i did in highschool. The graphic design work on the right has been done post-college. Starting with a menu on top then logos and finally socks packaging at the bottom.
