Introducing
Province Mass Housing. I found the visualizations of dystopian futures, of the wrecked cities of future in books and comics when I was a kid truly daunting. As we move to the present the resemblance of the real world to those graphcis I talk about are uncanny and eerie. These images Look Like A Dystopian Movie But Are Sadly very Real.

T
o start off with the designing and settle my perspective on the design, I tried understanding the issues with the present housing systems. The positive impact of density to overcome sprawl are clearly apparent but bunching together a couple hundred people in boxes stacking one on another must be a gradual, mentally breaking process for the residents themselves, which gets more apparent when you consider the general, common mass housing practices. People living away from the touch of ground. The verticallity is inevitable but a positive overhaul of the said stacking boxes is absolutely possible. This is what lies at the design ‘s heart. A modular approach to generate a ‘mental friendly’ housing system.

The Dwelling Core.
A
s mentioned previously, the heart of the design lies in its ability to serve its residents refreshing, breathing and living spaces. The Facade on being looked upon, seems like a cluster of tall courtyards lumped together, these open double-heighted opne spaces connect directly to the living quarters of each and every apartment of the building.

Generation of Double Height Courtyards
T
o achieve the desired space, as mentioned earlier, a Modular approach had to be taken wherein lied the challenge of producing a design methodology capable of generating the same result infinite times with various permutations/ combinations (The Type of dwelling i.e. 1BHK, 2BHK and so on.) So the starting point was to estabilish such a system. To understand the working, consider two parts - male and female, these two fit together and interlock to produce corresponding double height spaces, regardless of the carpet area attached to the part.

Variations in apartment capacity. The provision of these tall spaces remains consistent and is available to all Apartment Capacities, under reasonable Carpet areas.
All these Apartment blocks can further lock into each other as if a piece of a puzzle game to achieve the same result.

Adaptivity - Power to the User
The following plan represents a 1BHK plan from the given example. The Red portion represents the Double Height Area . These Areas can show great variety and can be altered per the users choice and habits. The user can choose to keep the space completely open , close off upto the bylaw limit, or somewhere inbetween.

Introducing
Sap
Residence Project.
S
ap is the name given to the residence I had the opportunity to design for a family of 4, The design approach for the project was a derivation of the family’s own wantings and their previous experience from their older residence, adding to the usual healthy design practices. The shape of the land to be built on was a major factor aswell.
Further is a brief look into the Design choices, materials pallete, form and the layout itself.
32
33
A journey of Space and Vision, to create Magnitude.
T
he Design approach was to maximise the potential of the linear shape of the land parcel. The plan follows a mostly obstruction free layout, right from the entrance a visual que, without breaking privact, to the very back wall of the house is established.
A miniature journey from the very gate of the house to the last surface of the wall, with sunlight illuminating from various light shafts at every quadrant of the the building forms an unconscioun, positive consequence in the mind of the people dwelling in the host building.
34
The land parcel measured 22.5 m. X 9.1 m., and was adjacent to other residences on either side. Faced East. The elongated shape of the plot posed a challenge for the design criteria and the interior planing , form and placement of openings has been layouted in accordance with that.
35
Ground Floor Plan. The Ground floor hosts a number of Semi-Formal and Formal rooms, with the master bedroom. The Plan is laid around the central couryard and follows a linear circulation.

MATERIAL PALLETE : THE DARK TONES, MID TONES AND HIGHLIGHTS
T
he ‘Colour’ Palette, the aesthetic of the house has been developed in order to produce the house as a canvas to represent the people living in it. To understand the choices, you could classify all the materials, colours and tones used into three: The ‘Dark’ Tones, The ‘Mid’ Tones and the Highlights.
1. The ‘DARK’ Tones:
The ‘DARK’ Tones: As already mentioned the house is a canvas of sorts to showcase the personalities of the people living inside, The House’s aesthetic is introverted, with pure, mild whites and grey tones that do not shine on their own -but remain comforting to the eye, allowing the articles on display along with the ‘Midtones’ and ‘Highlights’ to remain in the limelight.
50
2. The ‘MID’ Tones: The MID tones are the lightly detailed/highlighted areas of the residence and all these differ in texture and consistently but carry the same visual colour of the DARK tones. These creates areas of interest that one would not notice in their peripehry, hence , inducing interest in a mild manner
2. The ‘HIGHLIGHTS’ The select few areas of the house, that will remain unchanged, like the washrooms, the central courtyard, stairs, have been treated as the Highlights og the house. The sober and repressed nature of the DARK tones and the MID tones allowes these to stand out more.
51
MATERIAL PALLETE 2
The basic colour tone remains consistent throughout the interior and exterior, with the same phenomenon of Darktones, Midtones and Highlights.

Introducing
Humsafar Housing for Migrant Workers
T
his little boy in the picture is Aryan, son of ramesh, a migrant worker working in the Gilco. Skygarden Heights Site in Jalandhar (2021). He was asked to draw his dream house, and he made a ‘jhulla’ and a bunk bed. This speaks to how deprived these people have been.

The Module, Construction and Working
Construction Siding Panels - Doors, Windows, Solid
A single unit hosts 2 people, with ample space for beds, storage and misc activities. Panel have the option for swapping with windows, doors or Opaque, per requirement. When the panels are deployed, the roof member can be used for storage. PUF pronto panels provide insulation to the extreme climate across India.
64
65
The Module and the Framework
A single unit in its entirely is a whole package which carries the roof, the walls, doors, windows, and the furnitures and even offers a space for private storage after its installation. Each Unit has the capacity to house 2 individuals. All units are identical in space, shape and form, join together in modularity. Each unit has the ability to expand itself with another unit to increase the dewlling capacity of the unit to 4,6,8 and more.
Floor plans - Module 66
The design implements use of scaffolding members as a grid frame. Scafflolding is available at most sites. the workers are familiar with their use and they are easy to fix and remove in situ.
67
Sliding Mechanism for Installation
The Module is suspended from the Metal Channel and is slid into place The design offers a quick system of installation of the units as multiples units can be installed in quick succession The units are suspended from the channel which runs throughout the skeleton of scaffolding. the entire weight of the unit is being held by the channel so it takes minimal effort to slide the units to you their designated cell by hand, where they are un-collapsed and are ready to be lived it.
The Bearing/Roller that sits flush on the alumnium Channel 68
1
Installation process involves pushing the suspended unit to site by hand and simply uncollpasing it, the flanges and the scaffolding has forces working in altering directions which keeps the uncollapsed unit intact and in shape.
2
3
69
From Transport to Installation
The units can be carried to the site in a lorry (having a capacity of carrying 8 units at a time). One unit is a dwelling space for two people in one round. The units can be easily unloaded and manually moved to the installaltion site by just two people owing to it being very light weight. They can be carried to the set up with the use of hand trucks and can be moved vertically upwards using cranes, pulleys or hydraullic-scissors lift.
70

71
Open Space Generation
The flanges placed at the end of the panels restrict the adjacent placement of the units in any d i re c t i on / l ayout .
The flanges placed at the end of the panels restrict the adjacent placement of the units and makers it physically impossible for two separate units to be stationed alongside. Further, the scalffolding is integral to maintain the structure of the unit, so any unit that is not surrounded by the four vertical members cant stay placed. Thus the result of this is the inclusion of these open cells outside each unit.
72
73
Adaptivity
The design can be stationed on flat grounds, pits and unleveled terrains. The grid can be multiplied vertically upwards as well as downwards and can be wrapped around the site boundries. It has the potential to flow under and over. The essence of the skeleton system lies in the fact that it can be sculpted according to the shape, form and size of the site.

Example of Application
78
1-
The lower, soft story ground floor is a maze for grid cells, which can be left open, changed into multipurpose areas. The communal areas generated as a result of this layout helps invole people of various cultures to sit and share moments with one another.
2-
First floor and up is for the installation of living modules. Each unit with a separate open space which provides a secluded space for the dwellers to be able to perform their personal activities, practice their hobbies. The people that stick together among themselves have optionto say private, but at the same time have an oppurtunity to interact with the people of other cultures, ehtnicities .
