I want to go on living even after my death.” Performances will be in Hoosick Falls Central School’s newly renovated auditorium on Friday and Saturday, November 21 and 22, at 7 p.m., with a final Sunday matinee performance on Sunday, November 23, at 2 p.m. Thanks to the support of Hoosick Falls Central School, we are proud to offer free admission to all of our shows. The production is directed by Robert Allen, with Charles Krawczyk serving as the Assistant Director and Set Designer. Set construction leads are Justin Carter (a senior at HFCS) and Dwain Wilwol. Costume design is by Melissa Reynolds, with lighting design by Tom Revane and sound engineered by Paul Donohue. PARENTAL ADVISORY: This show is not appropriate for all ages. The Bennington Museum is counting on hidden treasures in its permanent collection to yield enough material to consistently fill the pages of its new initiative, The Walloomsack Review. Published annually, the museum’s publications committee released the journal to the public at the Bennington Historical Society’s recent annual meeting. Journal editor William Budde discussed the publication’s inception. “Last January, the museum began the process of cataloging its entire collection,” Budde said to the capacity crowd. “As a result, many discoveries surfaced, and the desire to report these findings was the catalyst for launching The Walloomsack Review.” TheWalloomsack Review’s first issue is 44 pages long, and separated into three distinguishable parts. It begins with a welcome by museum director Stephen Perkins and a short introductory piece by Budde which delves into the spelling of the journal’s place name, Walloomsack, and discusses the etymology and variations of the word. Next are the three main features, and rounding out the contributions is a section for

Tree of Memories

The Readsboro Community Library has announced the 10th annual tree lighting to be held on Friday, December 5 at 6 p.m., at the bandstand. Caroling will follow the tree lighting and refreshments will be available at the library. The tree will be decorated with white lights and adorned with white, blue, red and green ribbons. Area residents can “reserve” a ribbon for a loved one with a $3 contribution to the Remembrance Fund. White ribbons are for memorial dedications, blue signifies someone in need of prayer, red is for expressing holiday joy, and green ribbons are for peace. There is no limit on the number or type of reservation to be made. Remembrances will be listed at the Readsboro Library. The list will be read during the lighting ceremony. All proceeds from the remembrances will go to the Readsboro Community Library. Volunteer For Pave

Project Against Violent Encounters (PAVE) is planning early for its January 2009 volunteer training and is accepting requests for applications now. Trained advocates are certified to work directly with clients on PAVE’s 24-hour domestic and sexual violence hotline. Advocates mainly offer information, support and options to individuals seeking a way to break out of the domestic and/or sexual abuse cycle. Many isolated members in our community see the telephone as a lifeline to the help they need. When these individuals reach out, often for the first time, there must be someone to answer their cries for help. As part of the PAVE training, advocates will learn about community resources, domestic and sexual violence issues, and Family Court and law enforcement procedures with respect to protection orders. A volunteer will explore real-life calls through the practice of role plays. No volunteer will be asked to do anything until they feel ready. When they are, they can take calls confidentially and safely from home, on their cell phone or on a PAVE pager. We will try to accommodate an individual’s busy lifestyle when scheduling a hotline shift. Please join our team of dedicated volunteer advocates. Voting Rights and Veteran Remembrance in Hoosick Falls

Students in the HFCS Elementary Grades K-6 took an active part in the Veterans Day Assembly held on November 10. Classroom flag bearers lead the salute to the flag, followed by the tremendous singing of The Star Spangled Banner, and God Bless America by our faculty quartet, Michelle Culver, Leslie Green, Kim Hayden, and Kristin Lang. A warm welcome of introduction was given by elementary principal, Mr. Dailey, and the history of Veterans Day was read by Mrs. Burdick’s third grade class. Navy veteran Sandra Smallwood, retired Lt. Col. Steven Cane, and PFC Kevin Miller spoke to the students about their careers, their love of freedom and country, and the need to honor, respect, and thank a veteran for the freedoms we often take for granted. The haunting melody of TAPS was played by Army veteran, HFCS music teacher Bill Brown. Elementary music teacher Ray Connolly led the rousing patriotic tribute to the veterans at the culmination of the program. A reception followed in Mrs. Burdick’s third grade classroom, where veterans were presented with homemade cards from the elementary students. This assembly was the culmination of “Celebrating Freedom Week”, where students not only voted in their classrooms, but voted in the Magic Voting Booth as registered by Mrs. Burdick’s students. The polls were open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the balloting favored Mr. Obama by 382-267. Presidential Jeopardy, essays, and letters to the President were also enjoyed by the elementary students that week.

Pastel has long been embraced as an exceptionally versatile and effective drawing technique. The Art of the Pastel at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will feature eleven works by Edgar Degas, Jean-François Millet, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, and others. The pastels will be on view November 22, through February 16, 2009. The Art of the Pastel highlights the range of styles and subjects explored by nineteenthcentury artists using this delicate yet spirited technique. Included are “Méry Laurent Wearing a Small Toque” by Édouard Manet; “Entrance of the Masked Dancers” by Edgar Degas; “Boulevard de Clichy, Effect of Winter Sunlight” by Camille Pissarro; “Portrait of Mrs. Cyrus J. Lawrence with Grandson R. Lawrence Oakley”, “Woman with Baby”, and “Child in a Red Hat” by Mary Cassatt; “Little Girl with a Pear” by Frederick Childe Hassam; “Madame Maugey-

Gilbert” and “Portrait of Catherine Casine Gilbert” attributed to James Sharples. A favored medium for portraiture since the eighteenth century, the pastel crayon-composed of vibrant pigments and gumbased binders-produces colored lines with fluidity and flexibility, allowing artists to create quickly conceived, luminous designs which can then be manipulated through layering, smudging, and blending. Brunswick Elks Honor Veterans

The Brunswick Elks hosted the Annual Rensselaer County Veteran’s breakfast on Sunday, November 9. More than 700 meals were served to area veterans and their families, with a special awards ceremony following the breakfast. Twenty-five area Vets were awarded various service medals by Congressman Mike McNulty and County Executive Kathy Jimano. Following the awards ceremony, Congressman McNulty was honored by the County Veteran’s Service Agency with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol, for his many years of service to area veterans. The following veterans were honored with well deserved medals: Robert Maxwell Jr., William Basios, Joseph Angley, Edward Albert, Thomas Shull, John Degnan, Ellen McKnight, Dennis Davis, Joan Madigan Koch, Max Koch, Roger Haberman, Joseph Pallozzi, David Guyette, Robert St. John, William Hart, Anthony Debboli, Rudolph Broderick, Micheal McMahon, Werner Montag, Michael Taurone and Barton Murray. Honored posthumously were Robert Synder, Thomas Gorman Jr., John Miller and Daniel German. The Elks would like to thank its Auxiliary, area ROTC, Boy Scout Troop 518, Congressman McNulty, Congressman elect Paul Tonko, Assemblyman Tim Gordon, County Executive Kathy Jimano as well as many members of the County Legislature, and the Veteran’s Service Agency for helping make this annual event another success.

Presentation on “Person Centered Care” for people with Alzheimer’s disease

Susan Wehry, M.D. is a nationally recognized advocate for seniors and those who care for them. A popular speaker with both lay and professional audiences, she has taught physicians, nurses, judges and direct care workers from Alaska to Florida. Dr. Wehry will present on “Person Centered Care” at the Vermont Veterans’ Home on November 18 at 6 p.m. Dr. Wehry is a board-certified geriatric psychiatrist and currently serves as a consultant to the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living and the Vermont Veterans’ Home. Pastel by Virginia McNeice

On exhibit through November at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Bennington are pastels and oil paintings by Virginia McNeice, of Greenwich, NY. Her subject matter derives from surrounding farm land with its barns and cultivated fields; from nearby woods, ponds and streams; and from the lush countryside of Tuscany, Italy. McNeice’s work revels in color, contrast, natural light and shadow, and the visual extravagance of moving water. The UU Fellowship Meetinghouse is open to the public for services on Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. Bennington Woman Honored by American Cancer Society

��

Erica Rogers of Bennington received the American Cancer Society’s 2008 Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award on behalf of the American Cancer Society’s New England Division, and the Volunteer Advocacy Award from the American Cancer Society’s state of Vermont offices. The Volunteer Values Award was presented to Ms. Rogers by Richard Branda, MD, Chief Medical Officer for the Society’s New England Board of Directors, at a reception held November 6 at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel and Conference Center. The Volunteer Advocacy Award was presented to Ms. Rogers by Kelly Stoddard, State Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, at the same November 6 ceremony. The awards recognize Ms. Rogers for her outstanding work in the fight against cancer. Ms. Rogers has been active as an American Cancer Society volunteer for more than five years, beginning with her work in promoting and advocating for the Society’s Relay For Life in Bennington. She was later a team leader for the Fight Back Express bus stop in Bennington, and has used her experience as a cancer survivor to advocate for expanded access to health care for Vermonters.

The Spirit of Sharing Christmas Program

The Spirit of Sharing Christmas Program that is run by Economic Services every year is looking for both items to give and Volunteers. The structure of the program has changed this year. There will be no delivering of presents, only food to the elderly. People will be going to Nemer Motors and shopping for their own presents to give to their children ages infant-12. The help that is being asked for is in the following ways: Sorting toys at Nemer Motors on Saturday, December 20; people to keep stocking the tables while people come to shop on December 22 from 9:002:30; donations of toys, books, and games. The team who brought the 2007 US Capitol Christmas Tree to Washington, DC and visited Walter Reed Army Hospital along with five other Veterans’ facilities is excited to be able to have a small reunion this year by taking the tree for the Vermont State House Lawn. The tree is being donated by homeowners here in Bennington. Volunteer David Mance and his Mt. Anthony High School students will be cutting the tree with the assistance of the loan of a Burgess Brothers crane. Jim White, our former County Forester has been making sure the tree has received extra booster shots of vitamins to keep it strong and beautiful. Dave Zsido is doing the enormous job of organizing the logistics for the project and keeping the wonderful antique Mack Truck truckers in the loop. Don Keelan is back on board as our financial wizard. Tom Bluto is charged with gathering and bringing all the salvaged 2007 ornaments to Montpelier with the tree. Lindy Lynch has kept everyone organized and on track at the meetings. Mary Morrissey is busy behind the scenes helping smooth the process and get state helpers where we need them. Keith Martin is once again filling up the trucks with fuel to help us keep project costs down. Bennington Potters’ snowflakes will once again grace a gorgeous public tree. The Bennington Museum is hosting a Committee lunch to keep us strong and we hope to bring attention to their important annual Festival of Trees. The Mt. Anthony Chamber Singers will perform a new program at the Montpelier Lighting Ceremony on December 8th at 4:30 in the afternoon. The project includes a ceremonial gifting of a tree to the Vermont Veterans’ Home here in Bennington. The caravan will also make a (Continued on page 10)

Curves of Bennington Challenges Local Residents with ‘Nothing to Lose’

They’re nerve-wracking and stressful, taunting with their sugar gum drops— yes, the holidays are upon us. And this time of year wreaks havoc on our healthy eating and regular exercise ambitions; however, Curves of Bennington is inviting its members and area residents to participate in the Nothing to Lose holiday challenge. Just as the name implies, the promotion, which begins November 17, 2008 encourages members not to gain any weight by sticking with their good exercise habits and being conscious of what they eat during the holiday season. Research shows that while most people don’t gain as much weight during the holidays as they think they do -- the average is 1-2 pounds -- holiday weight gain is responsible for most of the typical weight gain that adults pile on over the years. So the strategy at Curves is not necessarily to try to lose over the holidays -- just to try not to gain. “We know how tough the season can be when it comes to exercising and meeting your fitness goals, but we want to help local women persevere,” said Judy Brownell, owner of Curves of Bennington, located at 901 E. Main St.. “Instead of becoming frustrated trying to lose weight when it’s almost impossible to do so, it makes sense to set a more achievable goal not to gain. After all, what woman isn’t thrilled to make it through the holidays without putting on a pound? Constance S. (Dale) Earle

Constance S. (Dale) Earle left this world on November 8, 2008 to join Ted, her beloved husband of fifty-five years. She was born on January 10, 1918. She leaves three children: Theodore E. Earle of Rutland, Vt., Bruce E. Earle of Sunderland, Vt., Constance E. Rose of Citrus Heights, Ca., 4 grandchildren and a sister, Joan S. Kalkman, of Rochester, N.Y. Constance enjoyed photography from the age of ten when her parents gave her a box camera. Her photographs reflect her deep affinity with the beauty of nature. In lieu of flowers it was Connie’s request that contributions in her memory be made to the Vermont Botanical and Bird Club, Henry Potter Scholarship Fund, c/o Brewster Funeral Service, PO Box 885, Manchester, VT 05255.

Last, but not least, his “other” family Dick and Kay Schlieder and family. Chuck played golf with Dick as well as many games of ping-pong and was “Uncle Chuck” to the family; Doug and Nancy Wood of Danby, with whom he played golf and took day trips; his long time helper

Chuck was predeceased by his wife Barbara Weaver Haviland; his sisters, Ina May and Margaret; his loving niece Cheryl Barrett of Friendship, Maine and three nephews. Joseph R. Martel Joseph R. Martel, age 73, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington died on Friday afternoon, Nov. 7, following a long illness. He was born in Manchester,

C.J. “Chuck” Haviland

C.J. “Chuck” Haviland died Thursday November 6, 2008. He was born August 15, 1927, the son of Clarence E. and Lily (Dobson) Haviland. Chuck joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor and served on a destroyer that was converted to a mine sweeper, the U.S.S. Knight. We heard many harrowing tales of exploding mines and Halsey’s typhoon. He was a member of the V.F.W. Harned Fowler Post 6471. His niece Kathy Wickert recently took him to see the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. He was so happy to be able to see all the memorials. Chuck was self-employed as an electrician and many other ventures. Previous to that he worked for E.J. Markey Electric as well as owning and operating Haviland House, an inn, with his family. Chuck loved to golf, take day trips and had a lot of laughs November 19, 2008

NH on October 12, 1935 and was the son of the late Ernest and Armella (Turgeon) Martel. Joseph received his education in Manchester, N.H., schools. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He had been employed as a truck driver for various companies over the years. Joseph was a member of the American Legion Post #13 of Bennington. He is survived by one brother, Donald Martel of Bradenton, FL, three nieces and two nephews. Memorial services and interment will take place at a later time. There are no calling hours scheduled.
