Manager’s Memo It’s official. I am a Yogini, although my husband likes to call me a yogurt. A yogini is someone who practices yoga. Yes, that’s right, I am doing yoga. I can’t believe Renee Tassone, it either. I started General Manager it two months ago after a few friends urged me to try it. It took a lot of urging because I did not think I was going to like it. I taught aerobics for twelve years and always thought yoga was too slow for me. Plus, I thought all they did was meditate and stretch all day. Boy was I surprised to find out I was totally mistaken. Yoga is extremely challenging and very beneficial to your health, body and mind. I have been doing yoga at least five days a week. If I am near home then I go to Frog Lotus in Clarksburg, Massachusetts. It is a peaceful, beautiful studio. If I go directly from work I go to Karma Cat in Bennington, Vermont, which is also very nice. I love both places and wish I could go more. I have read about a dozen books on yoga, trying to wrap my head around it and

understand the philosophy of it all. I am amazed at how every muscle hurts when I am done. I am using muscles that I did not know existed. I often wonder who in their right mind made up some of these poses because they really hurt. Just when I think I have a pose nailed the instructor tells everyone to make one (what seems like small) adjustment then it makes the pose even more difficult. It is such an intense workout. It is really a yin-yang effect because it is strenuous and challenging yet it relaxes the mind and makes you feel good inside. All of the instructors are great! Towards the end of class everyone lies on their back and prepares for shirvasana, where you let your body relax for ten minutes after putting it through this insanely tough workout. During this time my thoughts are always directed to how wonderful I feel and usually I make promises to myself that I will continue to take good care of my body. I think of ways I can be kinder to my body. One of the instructors sings a song during shirvasana. She has a beautiful voice that totally relaxes me. Yoga is all about connecting your spirit, mind and body and making them work in unison for optimum health. Yoga is also about energy.Using our energy from within to give us strength and good health. typically do not think of yoga as being aerobic but boy you can really work up a sweat. I have been taking some level two and three classes and my muscles are shaking by the time I am done. I notice that the people who practice yoga seem to be calmer, happier and not to mention extremely fit. They seem connected to themselves and to the earth. Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Summer 2012 Events

Williamstown, MA—Robert Sterling Clark, founder of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, published his book Through Shênkan: The Account of the Clark Expedition in North China, one hundred years ago this year. This summer, the Clark celebrates the centennial of the book’s publication and Sterling Clark’s 1908–09 scientific exploration with a series of exhibitions exploring Chinese art, history, and archaeology. Visitors are invited to dig in and discover exceptional works on view in Unearthed: Recent Archaeological Discoveries from Northern China, which features ancient burial objects never before seen outside of China. On view at the Clark’s Stone Hill Center is Through Shên-kan: Sterling Clark in China, an exhibition that includes equipment, specimens, historical documents, and related material from the Clark expedition, as well as Then & Now: Photographs of Northern China, in which historic photographs of life in China’s Shanxi and Gansu provinces taken in 1908–09 are juxtaposed with contemporary photographs of some of the same scenes, taken one hundred years later. The Clark’s summer of exploration continues beyond the galleries with a lively series of cross-cultural events. EXHIBITIONS Now-October 21 Unearthed: Recent Archaeological Discoveries from Northern China In 1908, the Clark’s founder Sterling Clark organized a scientific expedition to Northern China to document the region’s terrain and ecology. To commemorate the centennial of this journey, in 2008 the Clark initiated a series of collaborations with Chinese arts agencies and museums. This cultural exchange culminates this summer with a special presentation of recent archaeological discoveries from the Shanxi and Gansu provinces never before exhibited outside of China. June 16–September 16 Through Shên-kan: Sterling Clark in China This exhibition at the Clark’s Stone Hill Center celebrates the 100th anniversary of the publication of Through Shên-kan: The Account of the Clark Expedition in North China, 1908–09. The exhibition features a selection of biological specimens, scientific equipment, historic photographs, and original documents related to the expedition. Now–September 16 Then & Now: Photographs of Northern China Accompanying the exhibition Through Shên-kan is a presentation of historic photographs from Sterling Clark’s 1908–09 exploration of Northern China and the same scenes captured by Chinese photographer Li Ju one hundred years later. Juxtaposed pairs of images positioned along campus trails and in Stone Hill Center illustrate how much has changed—and what has remained the same—over the last century. Through January 1, 2014 Clark Remix Clark Remix presents highlights from the Clark’s permanent collection of paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts in an interactive space that allows audiences to engage with the collection in new ways. Clark Classic Clark Classic highlights many of the most significant and beloved works from the Clark’s permanent collection. Is a Pet Right for Your Home?

Nearly half of all households in the United States and Canada have a pet. Sometimes a pet can be just what a family needs, but other times families soon discover their households simply don’t make an ideal place for a pet. Pets end up in shelters for a number of reasons -- most through no fault of their own. Moving is the primary reason family pets are relinquished, according to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy. Other top reasons include the cost of pets, animals given as gifts, lack of time to care for the animal, or an animal that grew larger than expected. One way to avoid this scenario is to accurately assess if a pet is right for the home. Prospective pet owners who carefully analyze the pros and cons of pet ownership are more likely to keep their pet for the long haul. Certain animals require more care than others, and knowing about this can prevent the heartache of having to give away a pet. Here are some questions to ask yourself. • What type of pet am I considering? A horse has different needs than a hamster. Learning about what each pet requires can narrow down the choices. For example, if you live in an apartment, horse ownership may be out of the question, unless you can afford to rent a stall at a nearby stable. If a landlord does not allow a dog, but accepts a cat, that further eliminates your options. Also, think about if you want a pet that will be affectionate or one that will just be fun to watch and low-maintenance. • Why do I want a pet? Some people get pets for misguided reasons, such as it’s the thing all their friends are doing or it’s trendy. Others get pets to replace a pet lost to illness or simply because they desire companionship. Make sure the reasons you are getting a pet are the right ones and you are more likely to have positive outcomes. Otherwise you could be setting yourself up for a poor situation. • Do I understand the responsibility associated with pet ownership?

Getting a pet is not like getting another piece or furniture or the latest gaming system. This will be a new member of the family that will impact all the other members living in the house. They need to be involved in the decision. Depending on the pet, there will need to be daily care, such as providing food, changing litter boxes, taking the pet for walks, and providing affection. If you have a busy schedule that keeps you away from home for much of the day, a higher-maintenance pet, like a dog, may not be the best idea. It won’t be fair to the animal or yourself. Perhaps a bird or small companion animal would be better. • Am I financially capable of having a pet? Just like having a child or another dependant, pets cost money. If you are currently facing a money crunch, it’s probably best to put off getting a pet. Expenses include food, veterinarian visits, gear, cages, and grooming. • What is home life like? If your home is especially boisterous or on the small size, this should eliminate certain pets from the discussion. Many animals are skittish around crowds and may scatter and hide. They may also act out and bite or scratch if they feel overwhelmed by a lot of people. As for the space in the home, is it enough to fit a pet comfortably? • Do you prefer a young animal or one older? Many people flock to puppies and kittens or young rabbits. While there are advantages to raising a young animal, an older pet has advantages as well. These include an animal that may have had prior training and housebreaking. Also, their personalities are developed and you’ll know the adult size of the animal. Older animals are likely past the mischief stage and may be less likely to chew furniture or cause damage around the house. Taking care of a pet is not a decision to make lightly. Did you know? The use of renewable energy sources is on the rise. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the world consumed 504.7 quadrillion Btu of energy in 2008 (the most recent year for which statistics are available). Ten percent of that consumption was from renewable energy sources, including biofuels, biomass, wind, and solar energy. By 2035, the EIA forecasts that consumption of renewable energy will account for roughly 14 percent of the total world energy consumption. World electricity generation from renewable fuels also figures to be on the rise. In 2008, electricity generation from renewable fuels accounted for nearly 19 percent of the world’s total electricity generation, a figure the EIA estimates will be nearly 23 percent by 2035. The 19th Annual Pownal Valley Fair will be held on Saturday,July 28 from 10 am to 10 pm. on Route 346 in Pownal, Vermont, just off US VT Route 7, behind the post office and fire house. continued from page 2 serious when she is there. I have fallen over during many poses from our laughter. During most classes we take about fifteen minutes and do what are called inversions. These include head stands, hand stands and forearm stands. I am not very good with these, plus I am prone to vertigo so it is usually best if I don’t spend too much time upside down. I use the excuse that it is the vertigo that makes me so dizzy but anyone who knows me knows that is just how I am. Although I taught aerobics for a long time I don’t have any desire to instruct yoga. I would imagine you would have to perfect inversions in order to teach a class. I believe that when you work your body hard like you do in yoga you in turn treat it better by eating healthy and taking care of yourself. These days I am all about branching out and trying new things. It is always good to get out of your comfort zone and try something you would not normally try. I suggest everyone try yoga at least once, you will love it. Well, I think I better go ice my muscles now class is in an hour. Shantay Shantay Shantay, may you go in peace.
