Salem PTA Greets Santa

IN THIS ISSUE:

Santa and Mrs. Claus will greet children of all ages at Gardenworks in Salem, New York this Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. He will share tales from the North Pole and will listen to the wishes of each child. Volunteers from the Salem PTA will take photographs of children with Santa, and Mrs. Claus promises to bring delicious cookies. Proceeds from the photographs with Santa will help fund PTA projects. Blood Drive in Bennington

Bennington, Vermont area residents are asked to give blood on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the First Baptist Church in Bennington and Thursday, Dec. 11 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. All donors are asked to bring their donor cards, photo IDs or two forms of ID. All presenting donors can enter to win a Harley Davidson Sportster 883L.

Pancake Breakfast for BBA Basketball

This Sunday, Dec. 7, the BBA Girl’s Basketball program will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast. The menu will feature homemade pancakes, real Vermont maple syrup, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, juice and coffee. The cost is $7 per adult or $5 for children under 12. The event will be held at Burr & Burton in Manchester, Vermont from 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. All proceeds will go to the basketball program.

New Seniors Group in Shaftsbury

The Shaftsbury Senior Survey has resulted in the formation of a new group for all residents 60 and over called S.O.S. (Seniors of Shaftsbury). Telly’s TAKE ■ Old Questions, New Answers By Telly Halkias

Jack Isselhardt, a retired Vermont psychologist and current consultant, recently opened his first photography exhibition, “The Inside and Out: Bennington in Autumn,” at the Bean and Leaf Café. “I've always taken pictures,” Isselhardt said. “But now I have time to really study the details of images and consider the shots I'm taking in a different way.” The show consists of 15 lightly mounted digital prints, all in color, separated in two themes. The first group is a study of large to small — a common theme in Isselhardt's photographic upbringing and training. It centers on an initial image of one of Bennington's landmarks, the Old First Congregational Church.

Isselhardt emphasized a sequence that started at the general and continued to the specific. The series begins with a picture taken from the narthex and flows to a natural conclusion as its photographer moves into the sanctuary. The second series includes outdoor studies of color and light taken mostly in or near Isselhardt's Union St. neighborhood in Bennington. The emphasis there is to show fall colors in the differing contexts of light placement. “This show reflects two of my great interests with respect to both photography and life,” Isselhardt said. “Ask any photographer and they will tell you what light does to an object is the single thing that brings a picture

Story of Uncle Vova’s Tree at Hildene

This Saturday, Dec. 6, children ages 5 through 8 will embark on an adventure that includes the retelling and reenacting of Patricia Polacco’s popular children’s book, Uncle Vova’s Tree. This book-centered event begins at 10:30 a.m. at Hildene’s Welcome Center in Manchester, Vermont. As the story is retold, children will discover, as the author did when she was a child, that at the heart of the holiday season is family and the sharing of time honored traditions no matter what their origin. Activities will include the partaking of a yummy dessert called “kutya,” the creation of story-related crafts, the decorating and lighting of the outside Welcome Center tree with edible ornaments for wildlife friends made by the kids, as well as a trip to the mansion for singing songs and placing ornaments on the giant Christmas tree in the center hall. Admission will be $3 per child accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is strongly recommended; call 802-367-7960.

Elks Hoop Shoot

The Brunswick Elks will be hosting their annual Hoop Shoot for boys and girls ages 8 through 13 this Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Tamarac High School in Brunswick, New York in the multi-purpose gym. Registration will start at 10:15 a.m. The contest is free. Proof of age must be provided; parents are asked to bring their child’s birth certificates to registration. The winner is each age group will be eligible to compete in the District Hoop Shoot on January 10, 2009, with opportunities to compete at the state, regional and national levels. The national finals will be held April 26, 2009 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The winners will be enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame. For more information, call 518-279-3805.

HFCS PTA Hosts Holiday Kids’ Giftshop

Hoosick Falls Central School (HFCS) PTA is once again sponsoring Tiny Tim’s Holiday Giftshop. Children can use this time to purchase low-cost holiday gifts for their family and friends. It is also a learning opportunity for youth as they build on their math, decision-making and time-management skills while being thoughtful to others. Tiny Tim’s Holiday Giftshop will be open in the Elementary School Library in Hoosick Falls, New York on December 4 and 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and December 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Parents are encouraged to assist their children during the assigned time for their classes, or to come from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. or during the evening hours on Thursday. Holiday Dinner at Yester House

Berkshire SHARE Food Offerings

Community Holiday Workshop

All are welcome to attend a Community Holiday Workshop this Sunday, Dec. 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Federated Church of East Arlington, Vermont. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
