The Bennington Museum is raffling a signed original Will Moses painting entitled “Lucky Day”, a painting valued over $5000. “Lucky Day” is an 8” x 10” painting that portrays a riverside, country farm scene against the green mountains. It is set in a beautiful 14” x 18” wood frame. The painting was completed in July, 2009 and donated to the museum as an item for the Festival of Trees Celebration. It is on display in the museum lobby where raffle tickets are for sale at $5 a piece. Anyone can purchase a raffle ticket, and admission to the museum is not necessary to view the painting and buy a ticket. The drawing for Lucky Day will take place at the Festival of Trees Gala on Friday, December 18. Will Moses was born and raised in Eagle Bridge, New York. As a fourth generation member of the renowned Moses family, painting is natural for Moses, who began painting when he was four years old. Encouraged by his

Massachsetts Housing Grant Gives Pittsﬁeld a Boost Mayor Ruberto announced today that the City of Pittsfield received a housing grant from the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development in the amount of $70,000. “Bringing homes up to code is an issue that I take very seriously,” said Mayor Ruberto. “Our code enforcement team has been working very hard to make sure harmful substances, such as lead, are removed from our housing stock – thus helping us improve the quality of housing available to and providing safer homes and neighborhoods for Pittsfield’s families.” The Lead Paint Hazard Control Grant Program under the Mass DHCP is designed to expand lead inspection and abatement activities in private housing. The grant will be administered by the Department of Community Development as part of their existing residential rehabilitation program. Funds will be used for inspections to identify lead-based paint risks, lead hazard control abatement work, and relocation expenses for households temporarily displaced during abatement activities. Funds can be used for deleading activities in both owner occupied housing and rental property. “The Community Development Department is aggressively pursuing every possible funding sources to help our urban neighborhoods. We are pleased our efforts have been rewarded with this award, said Deanna Ruffer, Pittsfield’s Community Development Director. She went on to say, “This grant will increase the number of families we can assist with renovating their homes.” These funds will supplement the city’s existing housing rehabilitation program, which is funded through the

city’s Community Development Block Grant Program. Since its inception, this program has assisted with the renovation of more than 1,000 housing units in the city. Many of the renovated housing units are located in the Morningside and Westside neighborhoods. The residents of units assisted by grant funds must meet income eligibility guidelines and a strong preference is given to any household where children under six reside or spend a significant portion of time visiting. The funds must be utilized over a 30 month schedule and it is anticipated that 10 units of housing will be de-leaded as a result of this funding. John and Joy Primmer, owners of Wildstone Farm in Pownal, are celebrating their 20th anniversary on the certified organic haven they call home. There, they have raised a family, and realized a childhood dream. The Primmers grew up in nearby Williamstown, Massachusetts, where they still maintain deep personal roots. As high-school sweethearts, Joy graduated from Mount Greylock High School in 1973, and John followed a year later. While they began a search for their own land, both worked in the “green” arena to hone their skills as well as to make a living. In 1984, the Primmers came upon a tract of land in Pownal that was fairly isolated and had all the physical characteristics they had sought. The Primmers emphasized that being a certified organic farm has a lot to do with logistics and planning. In winter they must develop and submit for approval an annual production plan to Vermont Organic Farmers, a

USDA accredited organic certifier. The plan is a legal document that states what Wildstone Farm will grow in the coming year. The plan covers details right down to the methods of weed control, sources of seed procurement, volume and organic versus nonorganic seed, and much more. The farm is also subject to field and land inspections, which include a complete review of its business and finance operations. The Primmers, founding mem-

Bennington County Democrats Hold Annual Barbecue September 12

Democrats, liberals, independents and other interested parties are invited to attend the annual barbecue hosted by the Bennington County Democratic Committee on Saturday, September 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. It will be at the Arlington Recreation Park on Route 7A. Congressman Peter Welch will be attending, along with at least two of the declared Democratic candidates for Governor: Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz and Lamoille County Senator Susan Bartlett. Chittenden County Senator and former Lt. Governor Doug Racine may also attend. “Governor Douglas’s announcement that he will not run for re-election has added a lot of excitement to the gubernatoral race,” said County Democratic Chair Jim Sullivan,“This event offers a great opportunity to meet and speak with the candidates for governor along with Bennington County state senators and representatives”. There will be hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill and participants are asked to bring a salad, casserole or dessert to add to the menu. The barbecue is an annual event that draws a large number of politicians and local Democrats. It has become a traditional get-together of area Democratic activists. Michael P. Barrett will present a talk on the Anti-Rent War of 1839 to 1869 at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting on Monday, September 14. The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center on Garfield Road (County Route 26) in Stephentown, New York. It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. For more than a half-century following the American Revolution, over ten per cent of New York’s population lived on leasehold property which they could not purchase from members of the landed aristocracy. These owners jealously guarded their rights to perpetual ownership, which traced from Royal land grants, and would allow only rental leases, often on onerous terms, to their farming tenants. The Anti-Rent movement gained momentum upon the death of leading landlord Stephen Van Rensselaer, III, (the patroon for whom Stephentown was named) in 1839. The initial lack of financial and political power led the resisters to adopt the Boston Tea Party tactic of “Indian” disguise in order to stymie law enforcement and eviction. Politicians and liberal thinkers adopted the cause, and it became one of the most important legal and social issues of the turbulent pre-Civil War period. Thirty years of armed resistance, terror, imprisonment and strife swept across upstate New York. On a national level, the War indirectly led to the founding of the Republican Party and to the passage of the federal Homestead Act, which opened the West to settlement. Ironically, in New York, neither the landlords nor the tenants could ever claim a true victory, as both sides were forced to eat bitter fruit in the eventual resolutions of the disputes. Barrett earned a B.S. in Criminal Science at Russell Sage College, while working as a police officer for the City of Troy. He went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from the Western New England School of Law, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is presently Deputy Director of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway in Troy, as well as Director of the Furniture Program for Troy Area United Ministries. He has lectured at, or led historical tours for, over seventy different organizations.

Children’s Attic Fall/Winter Consignment Sale

Community Health Programs (CHP) is again sponsoring the Children’s Attic, a giant 2-day children’s and maternity consignment sale. Over 150 families will be selling in the Children’s Attic Fall/Winter Sale, which will take place on Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday, September 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Housatonic Community Center, Main Street, Housatonic, Massachusetts. Many of the items will be reduced 50 percent on Sunday. Volunteers shop early on Friday, September 11. Button Up Vermont Seeks Towns to Host Free Energy Saving Workshops

Button Up Vermont is gearing up for a new series of free home energy saving workshops throughout the state this fall. However, towns need to sign up now if they want to host one of these sessions and offer their residents the opportunity to learn how to save energy and heating costs in their homes. Button Up Vermont plans to visit 100 communities, at no charge, but slots are filling up fast. “Fuel prices may be down from a year ago, but many Vermonters can still save a bundle of money by keeping their heat where it belongs - in the house!” explains Button Up Coordinator Paul Markowitz. “Our goal is to show them how.” Button Up Vermont is looking for town energy committees, educational centers, civic groups, and other organizations to help organize local workshops. Specially trained energy auditors will lead these two hour sessions showing where buildings lose heat, how to seal air leaks and other conservation measures. These presenters will bring samples of energy saving materials, a slide show, free educational and reference materials for everyone attending, as well as a short video for people interested in do-it-yourself energy saving opportunities. Local retailers will also be encouraged to participate by offering discounts for workshop participants. The Central Vermont Community Action Council is organizing these workshops, in partnership with Efficiency Vermont and the Vermont Energy and Climate Action Network and with funding from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. The Future of Vermont’s Landscape

Tom Wessels, terrestial ecologist and professor at Antioch University New England in the Department of Environmental Studies will be Manchester’s “Art of Action” guest on September 9 at a special presentation on the “Future of Vermont’s Landscape” at 7 p.m., in the Hand Motors showroom. The “Art of Action” exhibition, showcasing the works of ten artists who have been selected to share their vision of Vermont’s Future, will serve as the backdrop to Tom’s presentation. Manchester is honored to be the kick-off host community for this exhibit that will be going on tour to 26 Vermont communities through July 2010. Nuclear Power and Climate Change

Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning presents “Nuclear Power and Climate Change” with Professor Peter Bradford on Monday, September 14 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This lecture will take place at Israel Congregation in Manchester Center, Vermont. Professor Bradford will review the potential of new nuclear plants to combat climate change, including discussion of the economic and other obstacles to building new nuclear plants to make a substantial difference. Bradford is a former member of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission and former chair of the New York and Maine utility regulatory commissions. He has taught at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and currently is an adjunct professor at Vermont Law School teaching “Nuclear Power and Public Policy.” He also served on the Vermont Public Oversight Panel on the ongoing reliability audit of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. Vermont Reads at Bennington Free Library

Bennington Free Library invites teens and adults to participate in Vermont Reads, the Vermont Humanities Council’s statewide one-book community reading program. This year’s choice is “When the Emperor Was Divine” by Julie Otsuka. Multiple copies of the book are available at the Library and the public is encouraged to read the book and attend one of the programs planned during the fall. Told from multiple points of view, “When the Emperor Was Divine” chronicles the heartbreaking evacuation experience of an unnamed Japanese-American family during World War II. Otsuka’s novel takes an unflinching and unsentimental look inside a stark shadow of America’s past: the Japanese-American internment camps. The book explores themes of fear, loneliness, heroism, the American dream and its deferment, cultural divides, and how a family, a community, or a country responds when under duress. Bennington Free Library in collaboration with Southern Vermont College and Bennington College will offer a series of programs centered on the novel’s themes. Southern Vermont College History and Politics Professor Thomas Redden will lead a discussion on the political climate during WWII, which led to the Japanese-American internment camps. This event will be held on Thursday, September 24, from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. in the Everett Theatre on the college campus. The film “Snow Falling on Cedars” will be shown on Thursday, October 15, at 7 p.m. in the Rotary Room at Bennington Free Library. Bennington College faculty member, Ikuko Yoshida will discuss how to educate children about war and what Japanese children learn about WWII at school. Yoshida’s program is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, at 7 p.m. in the TD Banknorth Room at the BFL. Eileen Sculley, Bennington College History Professor will speak about the Japanese-American internment on Wednesday, October 28, at 7 p.m. in the Library’s TD Banknorth Room. McCullough Free Library Book & Bake Sale

On Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13, the John G. McCullough Free Library will hold its annual Book and Bake Sale at the library in North Bennington. Area residents have been donating books, videos, CDs and audiobooks to the library and the Friends of the Library have been sorting and boxing the materials for the past month. There is a large selection of contemporary fiction, children’s books, mysteries, cookbooks, gardening books and other non-fiction, as well as some classics. The bake sale features a wide variety of baked goods from breads, to cakes, cookies and pies from the kitchens of the area’s best bakers. The book and bake sale will be held rain or shine in a tent at the back of the library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday the 12th, and 10a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday the 13th. There will be no early bird sales; the sale starts promptly at 9 a.m. on Saturday. This is an annual event undertaken by the Friends of the McCullough Library to serve the community by raising money to expand its collections, and otherwise support the library and its activities. The Friends group provides other services as well, such as a weekly reading program for Head Start children, and a program that takes books and other materials to homebound readers who cannot come to the library themselves. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 200 Pleasant Street, Bennington, Vermont, will present its famous Old Fashioned Chicken Pie Supper this fall, on Saturday, October 3, with seatings at 5:15 and at 6:30 p.m. Prices are $12 for adult; $5 under 13, and no charge under 3. The menu includes delicious chicken with gravy and biscuits, mashed potatoes, squash, apple-cabbage salad, cranberryorange relish, and apple crisp with whipped cream, tea and coffee. A Taste of Hoosick

Staying connected to the community and recognizing going hungry is a reality for many local families, Hoosick area eateries are quickly signing up to showcase their favorite dishes at “A Taste of Hoosick” to benefit the Food Pantry of the Hoosick Area Church Association. The event will be held on Sunday, September 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Hoosick Falls Country Club. Restaurants participating are: Bianca’s, Big Moose Deli and Country Store, Carmody’s West, Eagle Bridge Inn, Falls Diner, Guiseppe’s, Half-Time Sports Bar and Grill, Ice Kreme Kafe, Man of Kent Tavern and Cafe, Schoony’s, The Old Firehouse Tavern, Pizza Bella, and Potter’s Tavern. Chicken Tetrazzini for Church Dinner

A Chicken Tetrazzini Dinner will be held to benefit FUMC Youth Camp Scholarship on Saturday, September 12, at the First United Methodist Church, 134 Main Street, North Adama, Massachusetts, from 5 to 6 p.m. The menu will include chicken tetrazzini, buttered baby carrots, cornbread, and chocolate pudding surprise with nuts (or without) for dessert. Red Mountain Chapter Order of the Eastern Star will take part in the world’s largest food sale on September 12, at Berkshire Bank in Arlington at 10 a.m. The Arlington Pie Fest will benefit camp Ta-Cum-Ta, a camp for children with cancer, located in South Hero, Vermont.
