Andrew Lampron, a senior at Arlington Memorial High School (AMHS), has been named the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Bennington Chapter Good Citizen for 2009. DAR Good Citizen awards are given to outstanding high school seniors in recognition of their contributions to their communities and schools. To be eligible for the award, students must be in good academic standing and possess the qualities of leadership, service, dependability, good citizenship and patriotism. At AMHS, the faculty reviews the award criteria and forwards the names of eligible nominees to the senior class which votes to select a winner. In addition to Lampron, nominees for the 2009 DAR Award were AMHS seniors Meaghan Phelps and Heather Snow. Arlington Principal Kerry Csizmesia congratulated Lampron on his achievement. “Andrew is a most worthy recipient of this award. Academically, Andrew is a very strong student, and I know some of the wonderful volunteer efforts and causes in which he’s been involved. It is very fitting.” An AMHS Honor Roll student, Lampron participated in the Vermont Student Leadership Conference; Washington, DC-based Close Up program; Bennington Police Leadership Camp; Governor’s Institute for Science and Technology and

By Telly Halkias Sometime last spring, a friend of mine who knows my penchant for all things Mediterranean stopped in to give me a gift of cheese, delivering a healthy sphere of mozzarella. I took one look and didn’t recognize the wrapping. I wondered how far she had traveled to get the cheese. Her reply was that she picked it up at this farm she had discovered in Williamstown, Ma. I can attest that the product was first-rate, so I did a little research. Indeed, tucked away at the halfway point of Oblong Road in Williamstown is Cricket Creek Farm. With a sign so small and so high up a tree, you might miss it - as I did - the first time you drive by. But there is no mistaking what is there: yet another fine example of how local farmers can still operate a successful agricultural venue while providing quality products to a market that is feeling the effects of a very difficult economy in its product prices. January 31 brings the third Annual Winter Festival to Bennington, Vermont. This year a new dimension will be added. The North Bennington Graded School will be doing an Indoor Carnival. This should be loads of fun for the younger set. Winter Festival will include: wagon rides, ice sculptures, chili tasting indoors at the Vermont Arts Exchange, sledding, hot chocolate, a penguin contest at Lake Paran, McCullough Library Story Hour, hot cider at Powers Market for Plungers, Park McCullough free house tours and cookies, Kevin’s for contests, lunch, beer & wine specials, and Whitman’s Pet Shenanigans including a possible dog sled race. How much fun can you take? All this begins after watching the Penguin Plungers at 11:00 a.m. at Lake Paran. Join everyone at VAE for the After Party. Go pick up a map with individual event times, bundle up the kids and head for a stroll around North Bennington and all the activities. Center for Restorative Justice

The Center for Restorative Justice Board of Director’s has donated $5,000 to the Bennington Area Interfaith Food & Fuel Fund. The donation comes from the Center’s Community Betterment Fund. The Community Betterment Fund is comprised of donations collected from participants in CRJ’s Court Diversion and Teen Alcohol Safety Programs. The Court Diversion Program is an alternative-to-court program for adult and juvenile offenders. An essential component of Court Diversion requires clients to make amends for the harm that they caused. Making amends can come in many forms including apologies, community service, restitution and/or community donations. The Teen Alcohol Safety Program (TASP) is a program for youth under the age of 21 who are charged with underage drinking offenses. The TASP program focuses on education and treatment for alcohol related problems as well as requires offenders to pay back the community in the form of community service or donations. In cases where participants make general community donations, these funds get placed in the Community Betterment Fund. Given the economic crisis we are facing, CRJ’s Board of Directors felt that the Interfaith Food and Fuel Fund was the best suited recipient for Community Betterment Funds, and is readily poised to reach the many people in need this winter. The CRJ Board of Directors is comprised of Mary Morrissey, Charles Letourneau, David Beriau, Andrea Weisberg, David Fenster, Ken Carlsen, and Phil Anton. January 14, 2009

Bennington Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday

The community is invited to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. civic holiday with an evening of events sponsored by the Peace Resource Center and the Greater Bennington Area Interfaith Council. All events will be held on Monday evening, January 19, from 6 p.m. onwards, at the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Meetinghouse at 108 School Street in downtown Bennington, Vermont. Festivities begin with a community potluck. You are invited to bring your family and food to share. (The doors will open at 5:30 p.m.) The potluck will conclude with a non-sectarian reflection time regarding King and his legacy, featuring speakers from the sponsoring organiza-

Growing children face challenges and pressures that parents can help them manage. “Through the Guiding Good Choices workshop parents and children can learn tips and skills to help prepare for these pressures,” said Ryan Simpson, Coordinator of the Southshire Substance Abuse Coalition, “and they can get paid for taking part!” Each family who participates can get paid up to $65 for participating. Guiding Good Choices is a series of fun, informative, and interactive sessions that give youth skills to refuse peer pressure and supports parents in reducing the likelihood that their children will develop substance abuse and other problem behaviors. Parents of 9-14 year olds should register NOW!! The next Guiding Good Choices workshop will be held Tuesday nights January 13February 10 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the State Office Building behind CCV, 324 Main St. To register call Ryan Simpson at 442-5491. Local Food Pantry Receives Largest Donation in its History

Pangaea Restaurant’s Bill and Maria Scully are giving back to the local community with a generous donation to the Green Mountain Christian Center (GMCC) Food Shelf. For the first 100 days of the New Year, they will donate 5 percent of the gross receipts from their local, award-winning restaurants, Pangaea and Pangaea Lounge, located in North Bennington, to GMCC’s Food Shelf located at 440 Main Street in downtown Bennington. The owners of Pangaea invite other businesses to contact GMCC about participating in the Eat Locally and Help Locally program. Since the GMCC Food Shelf moved to the former Methodist Church in downtown Bennington almost one year ago, Green Mountain Christian Center’s Food Shelf has had a continual increase in requests for assistance. According to Pastor John Goyette, “Our Food Shelf is available for anyone in need, and since relocating downtown, we are much more accessible to the local community. We have seen a significant increase in demand, in part because of the move, but also because of the changing economic conditions. It is simply too difficult for many families struggling with loss of jobs and the high cost of food, fuel and housing to make it through the month without extra assistance.” Businesses wishing to contribute through a similar partnership should contact Pastor John Goyette at 447-7224. The Bennington Museum Kicks Off The New Year!

Wrapping up 2008, the Bennington Museum is set to bring you another grand year! As we continue to celebrate the history and heritage of the southern Vermont region, and to serve as a center for visual and performing arts that enrich our community and world, our 2009 calendar highlights artists of all media. As in the past, the museum will be closed for the month of January, but will re-open on February 1 with a Free Community Day. As presented throughout the coming year, February offers activities and events for every member of the family. February 1 marks the opening of the annual Student Art Show at the Bennington Museum. The Student Art Show brings artwork of the region’s elementary, middle and high school students to the museum in a display ranging from whimsical projects by the young students to more advanced work of older students. Certificates of participation will be presented to youth as they arrive. This exhibit runs from February 1 through March 1. The museum continues its focus on creative youth of the area with a Young Musicians’ Concert on February 7 at 11 a.m. The concert will include instrumentalists from Molly Stark and Monument Schools in Bennington, as well as vocalists from Pownal Elementary School. The concert is free. On February 22 from 2-5 p.m., the museum hosts the fourth annual Bridal Fair. Having enhanced the event from last year with some special touches, the museum is excited to bring together those dreaming of their special day, with vendors from throughout the region who can make it a reality. The event includes vendor displays, a bridal fashion show, raffle and auction items, door prizes, and refreshments. Admission is free. The Bennington Museum - Celebrating Vermont’s Heritage with the Bennington Pottery Gallery, the Military Gallery, Grandma Moses Schoolhouse and Interactive Family Center, as well as the Grandma Moses Gallery with the largest public collection of Grandma Moses paintings in the world, Early American Furniture and Art, the MartinWasp Antique Car, and changing new and exciting exhibits. Research Shows Exercise Keeps Money in Your Wallet

In today’s uncertain economy, families are looking to cut back on any expenses that seem like a luxury or even the slightest bit frivolous. One of the items receiving scrutiny in many households -- and in the media -- is gym memberships. Yet a growing body of evidence suggests that cutting that gym membership may be exactly the wrong move for even the most cash-strapped family. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, inactive adults have significantly higher direct medical costs than active adults, and the costs associated with physical inactivity increase with age. “To put it in perspective,” said Judy Brownell, owner of the Curves women’s fitness center in Bennington, “for every dollar you spend on wellness, you save as much as five dollars on illness.” Curves has partnered with major health insurance and third party providers -- including Healthways SilverSneakers, AARP, and Blue Cross Blue Shield -- who see huge financial benefits in wellness programs and offer reimbursements and incentives on Curves gym memberships to their plan members.
