America. Hadwen was also an active member of the Boy Scout Council, and the local Chamber of Commerce. He served as a Trustee, Tree Warden and Police Commissioner for the Village of Old Bennington. He was a lifelong stamp collector, recently donating a very unique and rare collection of Vermont stamps to the Bennington Museum. Hadwen graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1950 and established two scholarships there for Vermont students. He owned a parcel of land adjacent to the Bennington Museum and donated Hadwen Woods to the Museum for use as an educational nature walk. George Hadwen is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie, and their three daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy and Bill Schroeder, Jan and Bob Hubbell, and Brooke Hadwen and Pat Burns, and five grandchildren, Drew Ravon Ransom, John Henry Hadwen Schroeder, Chelsea Mead Hubbell, Susan Hadwen Schroeder and Whitney Alix Hubbell.

George Edward Hadwen, 84, a seventh generation Vermonter and longtime resident of Bennington, Vermont, and summer resident of Cedar Beach in Charlotte, Vermont, died in Fort Myers, Florida, of cancer on October 12, 2009. Hadwen and his wife, Marie, founded Hadwen, Inc., which published the Pennysaver Press Newspaper for 29 years and operated an offset printing business. He was a member of the Outdoor Writers of America and a member of the National Advertising Association. He wrote and published two books, “The Rock Ribs of Bennington Town” and “Grandpa’s Memories of the Pacific War.” Hadwen served in the Navy amphibious unit (LCC) during WWII and participated in eleven invasions, including Leyte Gulf. He was an active member of Rotary International for 35 years and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served as president of the Vermont Printers Association, and was a director of both The New England Council and the Suburban Newspapers of

Terri Burdick, Elementary Ski Club advisor, announces that the club is open for registration again this year! Students in Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 are invited to join the Skiing/Snowboarding Club, to be held at nearby Willard Mountain in Easton, New York. SKYWARN Spotter Training

The National Weather Service will be conducting a SKYWARN Spotter Training session at the Bennington Free Library on Wednesday, October 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. These classes are designed to give students the knowledge and observational skills they need to make accurate reports on local weather conditions to the National Weather Service. This season’s session will focus on the potential hazards of winter weather. The class is free and all members of the public are welcome to attend. Lost Dog Remains at Large in Pittsﬁeld!

Jake, the 10-year-old Field Spaniel, escaped on Crane Avenue in Pittsfield on September 26 and was last seen on Tuesday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the area of Ridgeway Avenue and Allengate Avenue, a quiet neighborhood near the Berkshire Hills Country Club and Springside Park. He has been spotted by area residents four times in the last two weeks, so the search is still going strong and we remain confident he will be found. Jake may be confused and scared, but we believe he has managed to locate a hiding place and food source. We also think he rests during the day under a porch, garage or shed, and ventures out in the late afternoon/ early evening to look for food. If you have a porch, dog house or other outbuilding, please call if you see signs that an unknown dog might have been there. If you leave food outside for your dogs, cats or for wildlife, please watch out for a hungry brown spaniel! Hinsdale Lions Club Serving Trick-or-Treaters

The Hinsdale Lions Club will offer free hotdogs and juice boxes to all Hinsdale trick-or-treaters on Halloween, October 31 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The Lions will be serving from their trailer which will be located at the basketball court of the Recreation Center. Telly’s TAKE ■ A Half-Century of Footwear By Telly Halkias

As a boy, when someone in my family had a favorite pair of shoes, they would replace the soles and heels. One of my errands was to ferry the footwear to the neighborhood cobbler when required. I found myself in that familiar chore as I picked up a pair of shoes with new heels at Marra’s on North Street in Bennington. The store is somewhat of a generational crossover: the craft of shoe repair still practiced by owner Dick Torrey in the back room, while his wife Dora manages the retail store - which stocks plenty of current footwear and other gear. “When I came to town in 1959 from Brattleboro, there were five businesses like us,” Torrey said. “Now it’s just one, but we’re very pleased at how the shop has evolved over the years.” Marra’s carries lines such as SAS, Anna, and Spring Step, and styles for men and women from

Torrey has also added a zipper supply and repair segment to his repertoire. “It’s amazing the volume of zipper work we do, to include replacing sliders for a nominal cost,” Torrey said. “We do coats, jackets, work pants - anything that utilizes zippers we handle. The demand for those jobs from

our customers made that a good service to take on.” With shoes in hand, I paused at the door and took a deep breath of that distinctive aroma of leather, a bridge back to my boyhood. Honoring Don and Pat Bowman

The Stephentown Historical Society will honor Don and Pat Bowman with a reception on Sunday, November 1, at the Heritage Center from 2 to 4 p.m. The Bowmans are leaving the area. They have been active members of the Stephentown Historical Society for many years. Don is a past president and contributed greatly to the Heritage Center transportation exhibit with his knowledge of railroad practices and lore. Pat has been chair of the society’s program committee for over 20 years, providing a wide array of interesting speakers and audience participation events. Friends of the Bowmans are invited to come and say goodbye and to thank them for their long service to the society. They work hard to raise funds for a fire truck, church repair, missionary events, clothing, heat, food, scholarships, and more. Who will replace them? Call your local church, food cupboard, or school and find out what you can do to help. Become a member of a service organization such as the Elks, the Moose, Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, Grange, Heartworks, Neighbor to Neighbor, Community Food Cupboard, or Meals on Wheels. Help out with community events. You’ll have a great time. Trust me on this! ...disturbing... I received a disturbing letter from some folks who are running for the Rensselaer County Legislature. They indicate seniors on Social Security are not being treated fairly. They state that “seniors should have the option to retain their existing health care program.” There is nothing in the proposed Health Care Amendment that would change Medicare. Nothing. I personally know some of these folks, and I’m disappointed that they have signed their name to a letter meant to frighten us seniors.

Over the years that I’ve had the opportunity to be editor of the Vermont News Guide, and now the TriState Pennysaver News, I’ve been allowed to become friends with the hard-working volunteers of area church and service organizations. They offer pancake breakfasts, auctions, church suppers, bake and tag sales, and raffles of quilts, paintings, antiques and more. The volunteers in these groups take on the extra duty of publicity. Most of these folks are older citizens. You’ll find them volunteering for RSVP, at Hildene, in schools, in senior centers, delivering meals for the meals program, and more, while at the same time they are working on their next benefit. A few of the names are familiar to readers: Agnes McDonald, who announces the pancake breakfasts in West Arlington. Others are Aggie Braymer, Cathy and John Plonski, and Ellie Wetterauw from Rupert. Teens Take Over VAE’s Big Studio Every Tuesday! Running of the Turkeys

The 14th Annual Running of the Turkeys 5K road race and walk will be held on Thursday, November 26 at 9 a.m. (Thanksgiving morning) at Fisher Elementary School in Arlington. Current Thinking About Dementia

In recognition of November National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Vermont Veterans’ Home, the Vermont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Commission on Alzheimer’s disease and Related Dementias invites the community to a series of presentations about current thinking regarding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Susan Wehry, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine will kick off the series on Monday, November 2, at 5:30 p.m., discussing “Fish, Vitamin E, Gingko and Sudoku: Do They Work?” Dr. Wehry will review what we know about the risk factors for developing dementia, the protective factors that diminish the risk and what interventions may actually help. The last presentation of the series is November 30 at 5:30 p.m., with Maggie Lewis, MPA, LNHA, Associate Director of Programs and Services for the Vermont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Maggie will help participants understand “Memory and Aging: What’s Normal, What’s Not”. Maggie will discuss signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and provide information about normal memory changes due to aging. All presentations will be held at the Vermont Veterans’ Home, 325 North Street, Bennington, Vermont, in the A. Luke Crispe Multipurpose Room. American Legion Halloween Party

Pittsﬁeld Health Department Receives Grant

Dr. Philip Adamo, Chairman of the Pittsfield Board of Health and Health Director, James J. Wilusz announced today that the Health Department has received a grant from Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and the Department of Public Health for $135, 812 in an effort to create a comprehensive, educational, and mitigation program and to offer the voluntary H1N1 vaccinations to our priority groups with the city. The Board of Health has been working collaboratively with community partners such as the Berkshire Visiting Nurses Association, Berkshire County Sheriff ’s Department, Berkshire Health Systems, Berkshire Community College, the Pittsfield Public School System, and many others in an effort to educate the public on the importance of safe and sanitary hygiene, promote proper hand washing, offer free vaccination clinics for the H1N1 once they arrive. PAVE Sponsors Workshops for Women

Project Against Violent Encounters (PAVE) is offering another in its Healthy Mind, Body, and Family series of free workshops for women. This is a great opportunity for women to learn new skills while having a fun and entertaining experience. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Observes Feast of All Saints

On Sunday, November 1, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 200 Pleasant St., Bennington, Vermont, will observe the Feast of All Saints with celebrations of the Holy Eucharist at 8 a.m. (said, Rite 1), 10 a.m.(choral, Rite 2), and 5 p.m. (contemporary liturgy). Readsboro Literacy Week

The 11th annual Literacy Fair will kick off the week of October 26 at the Readsboro Central School. This annual event is co-sponsored by both the Readsboro Community Library and Reading is Fundamental. Bingo for Books is scheduled for Monday. Guest readers Cyndi Candiloro, community librarian, Betty Bolognani, former state representative, Karen Boisvert, WINGS coordinator, and two surprise readers will read on Tuesday. The Weitsman Collection Explored at Stoneware Collectors’ Meeting

The Stoneware Collectors’ Group will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 23, at the Bennington Museum to hear a presentation by John Scherer, former curator of the New York State Museum. Scherer will speak on “Art for the People: Decorated Stoneware from the Weitsman Collection” at the New York State Museum, one of the premier stoneware collections housed at that museum. The lecture will delve into this important collection and the information that it conveys about the potters and decorators who made these beautiful utilitarian objects. A group dinner will follow immediately after the lecture at the Mt. Anthony Country Club in Bennington. Adam Weitsman began his collection in 1980 at the age of eleven. He and his father, Harold F. Weitsman, owner of a scrap metal and steel business in Owego and Endicott, dug up two stoneware beer bottles on their property. They took the bottles to an Owego stoneware collector for identification, and upon seeing the collector’s display, Adam and his father were “hooked.” The young Weitsman continued to collect decorated New York stoneware, traveling throughout New York State and the East coast to obtain pieces from antique collectors, dealers, at auctions and estate sales. His focus was on oversized and decorated “presentation pieces” that were made for special occasions. Many of these had elaborate and unusual cobalt blue designs. In 1987, Weitsman purchased a pitcher which was twenty-eight inches high, with an intricate and elaborate blue design featuring an American eagle. It was the finest piece of American decorated stoneware made by Thompson Harrington and John Burger of Rochester between 1852 and 1854. The piece had been displayed in their shop window and as history has it, the pitcher was also displayed at a World’s Fair. Weitsman purchased the pitcher from a descendant of John Burger. Weitsman donated his collection of stoneware to the New York State Museum in 1996 to ensure that the collection would be preserved to be enjoyed and studied by the public. Weitsman continues to add pieces to this collection. The presenter, John Scherer, graduated from the New York State

University at Albany with a BA in history. He later graduated from the Cooperstown Graduate Program with an MA in Museum Studies and American Folklife. Curator of Decorative Arts at the New York State Museum in Albany from 1967 to 2009, Scherer currently serves as Historian Emeritus. ________________________________________________

Third Annual Halloween Thriller Dance

The 2009 Thrill The World event is set for October 25, at 12:30 a.m. GMT/UTC (which is October 24 is some parts of the world). This year’s Thrill The World aims to be an unprecedented global celebration of the life and music of Michael Jackson. An estimated 400+ events in 42 countries are expected to dance with between 10,000-50,000 participants worldwide. Thrill Bennington will take place on Saturday, October 24 at 8:30 p.m., on School Street, Downtown Bennington. Last year 111 dancers (just 3 short of Los Angeles) joined in the worldwide event. This year we hope to have at least 150 dancers. There are still opportunities to learn the dance. Harvest Celebration

Gather together for a Harvest Celebration on Saturday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children will enjoy a bouncy house, face painting, pumpkin painting and popcorn at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center. Haunted Courthouse of Salem

The Haunted Courthouse of Salem will be the scene of some spinetingling fun on Saturday, October 24, when an aristocratic family of ghouls puts out the welcome mat for all fearless visitors. Entertainment includes a deadly chat with a ghoulish assortment of characters and a hair-raising show in the upstairs courtroom. Afterwards, guests will be escorted down the back steps where they will be invited to vote for the best cells and money prizes will be given out at the end of the night. There will be two viewings: 5-6:30 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m. Cost: $8 adults; $5 for 12 and under; no charge for children under five; family rate $20. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Contact the Courthouse at 518-854-7053 for tickets. Jack Phillips is in charge of this Halloween fundraiser. Help is still needed for acting roles, setting up and taking down decorations. Halloween Party at Bennington Museum

Come to the Bennington Museum for a frighteningly good time at the Halloween Party on Sunday, October 25, from noon to 5 p.m. when admission is free! Partially supported by Merchants Bank, the day offers events throughout the museum that provide excitement for children and adults of all ages. Come in costume and join the fun with spooky crafts such as mini-graveyards and Halloween finger puppets. Play some ghoulish games like Ghost Waiter and see if you are brave enough to enter the giant spider web. There will be cemetery tours, guessing contests, gallery hunts and goodies to eat. At 3:30 p.m. join the costume parade through the museum. This event is free to all, so bring friends and enjoy a day at the museum! The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main St. (Route 9) and is open daily in September and October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is just a short ride from Manchester, Williamstown and eastern New York.
