It was also decided to move this event to the beginning of the school year as a team building activitiy. Ribbons are awarded for the top team in each event in each grade level. A trophy is awarded to the top team in each grade level and there is a trophy that is engraved with the winner each year for the team with the most spirit and is the Grand Champion Team.

Patriot Challenge Day at Mount Anthony Middle School, is based on “Sports Day”, which is a country-wide school event in Japan. It’s even a national holiday, observed on the second Monday in October. School classroom teams compete against one another in many team events such as the 100 meter dash, bean bag tossing, team cheer and obstacle courses. In 2006, when the PSTA was looking to sponsor a year end school event, Michael Joyce suggested a “Sports Day”, after having taught school in Japan for seven years. He found it to be his favorite day of the school calendar. The first “Sports Day” held at the Middle School was in June of that year. The following

He was sighted twice in the area, the last time on September 29 at 2 p.m., at 524 Crane Ave., so we believe he will remain close by. We have updated his poster as there is now a reward being offered. Annual Neighborhood EXPO

The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition invites the public to join us for the 12th annual Neighborhood Expo! This year’s event is entitled “Food Matters,” and is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the St. Elizabeth’s of Hungary Parish Center on St. Anthony’s Drive in North Adams. The “Food Matters” Expo will feature networking, music, cider and fun from 9-11 a.m., followed by a sneak peek at Sharon Wyrrick’s “Food Matters” documentary film, then a World Café discussion, and finally lunch at noon prepared by local chefs using locally grown products. This warm and friendly autumn event offers a chance for folks to come to the table, eat, reflect and celebrate our locally produced food. We at the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition appreciate the role that food has played in family and community traditions. At the request of many people, Joe Manning was selected to act as host/facilitator of the day! See a sneak peak of Sharon Wyrrick’s efforts in the community around local food in her documentary film project. When you have 10 pets (I’ve had 12 before, if you can believe it), you quickly learn that food alone costs a small fortune. That’s how I came upon O’Malley’s Pet Supplies on Gage Street in Bennington about a decade ago, after owner Mike O’Malley had moved to his current space from just around the corner on River Street. I’ve joked that with so many pets to feed, my family is doing its fair share to help finance Mike’s future retirement. Until then, though, I keep making weekly visits. Not to disparage the larger stores that carry pet products, but one of the advantages of shopping at O’Malley’s is the personal touch that Mike and his staff bring to every customer, new or regular, who walks through the door. It doesn’t hurt, either, that all of my dogs have visited the

shop, and that one of my cats, a 25-pound Norwegian Forest boy named Captain Nemo, was adopted at O’Malley’s. Bennington’s Geezer Gazelle, Bob Matteson, 93, ran New York City’s renowned Fifth Avenue Mile, on Saturday, September 26 in 12/32, more than a minute faster than his 93-single-age world record, 13.92, Colonie, August 11, and only nine seconds slower than his age-92 time in the Fifth Avenue event in September 2008. However, Fifth Avenue Mile times do not count toward records since the course is straight-away and slightly downhill. Matteson was the oldest competitor in the race, run by 3,793 men and women overall. Thirty-six runners were slower than Matteson, but one 90-yearold, Bill Benson of Valley Stream, Long Island, New York, a longtime running friend of Matteson, was faster at 11:36. However, ageadjusted per age-graded tables, Matteson’s time was approximately 5:30 and Benson’s approximately 5:40. Runners age 80 and older numbered 16 total.

Empty Bowls Comes to Downtown Bennington

What does “empty bowl” mean to you? Perhaps you think, “Something was finished and must have been good—how about more?” Or, “Oh boy! What shall I fill this with?” Sadly, for many folks in Bennington, it has been, “Sorry, there isn’t any, and we’re completely out of money.” On Sunday, October 11, Bennington area residents and visitors will have their chance to each choose a unique handmade “empty bowl” for $10, fill it with some good soup, take some bread and beverage, and sit down with friends, neighbors, and strangers to enjoy—and think about—a very simple square meal. You get to keep this bowl when you go home. Why keep one bowl? This bowl will remind you that there are individuals and families in the community of Bennington that are chronically hungry and seriously undernourished. Chronic hunger is a hidden problem with no visual evidence. A school child can’t concentrate or stay awake in class. An adult has no energy or focus. A family always has someone sick. We don’t see these things around us, but many of those we know deal with this issue daily. All the soup for the event has been donated by local restaurants, and all the proceeds will go to the Food and Fuel Fund, which has been helping people with their food and fuel costs for thirty-five years. John Street Gallery Holds Special Showing The 15 John Street Gallery in Hoosick Falls recently completed the most successful exhibition for artist Martin Walter of his capitaviting images of days gone by and our present day rural countryside. Continuing in our quest to promote our local artists the Gallery will have a special showing on Friday, October 16, from 3 p.m. to 7 pm. The showing will highlight our Fall Foliage season with accents of the 400th anniversary of Henry

Apple Picking to Beneﬁt Arlington Area Children

Happy Days Playschool and the Arlington Arts & Enrichment Program invite the community to pick apples on October 10 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Terry’s Orchard, located on route 7A in Bennington. All proceeds raised during the weekend of October 1011 will benefit Happy Days Playschool and the Arlington Arts and Enrichment Program (AAEP). In addition to apple picking, families can enjoy hayrides and purchase baked goods, cider and donuts. Like many of the fundraising events that Happy Days plans, the apple picking weekend is a fun activity for families and young children. Carol Barbierri, Director of Happy Days Playschool, says that Happy Days tries to plan fundraising events that promote family togetherness and fun. “What’s more fun than parents and children picking apples, going for a hayride and eating homemade baked goods in the fall?” says Barbierri. During the fundraising weekend, Terry’s Orchard will be staffed by Happy Days’ staff, board members, and parent volunteers. The two organizations will split the proceeds from both weekends. Happy Days Playschool provides a quality early education/childcare program in a consistent, caring and positive atmosphere using a family-centered approach. Happy Days also provides an Arts Enrichment Program for the benefit of children, families, teachers and community members. The North Adams Artists Co-op Gallery (NAACO) welcomes the public to the final of four artists’ talks and demonstrations to be held at the gallery on 33 Main Street, North Adams at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7. The talk is free to the public and refreshments will be served. Jessica Phillips is a ceramic artist and an exhibiting member of the North Adams Artists’ Co-Op Gallery where she has on display a selection of unique hand-carved vases, bowls, and teapots that she creates at her studios at Battenkill River Pottery Studio in Arlington, Vermont. Her current series is inspired by nature incorporating traditional shapes with her innovative carving style. The designs are based on her original botanical drawings and carved free hand onto the ceramic form. Jessica will show how to adapt a two dimensional image to work on three dimensional surfaces. She will be talking about her innovative hand carving technique, demonstrating the carving process from start to finish and will have examples of her work in its various stages. She will also discuss the formulation of glazes from raw materials. Jessica graduated Magna Cum Laude from UNC-Wilmington with a BA in Studio Art. Her work is inspired by ancient art, she follows the belief that the best foundation an artist can have is to know what came before them. “I have always been fascinated by ancient cultures and the graceful forms of their ceramic vessels”. The North Adams Artist Co-op Gallery is proud to be one of the 27 galleries participating in this year’s DownStreet Art. Mountain Valley Medical Clinic (www.ourclinic.org) recently received a grant from the Stratton Foundation (www.strattonfoundation.org) to purchase supplies for the crash cart located in the Urgent Care area of the clinic. The grant money was used to purchase emergency medicine and supplies needed to assist in the event the medical team is faced with a life threatening illness. “We cannot emphasize enough how important a role organizations such as the Stratton Foundation play in supporting what we do here at MVMC”, says Cyndi MacDonald, R.N. “The crash cart is a critical piece of equipment that we hope to never use, but when we do, we know we are prepared with the most current equipment and supplies. The Marrow Donor Program at Rutland Regional is planning an exciting fundraising event and we want you to be a part of it! We’re hosting Explore-A-Rig, a unique event inviting families to come and well - explore a rig. On Saturday, October 10, from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the Vermont State Police Academy in Pittsford, vehicles from a variety of businesses and organizations will be on hand to show off their rigs and let children climb inside for a hands-on experience. Every day thousands of patients who need a life-saving marrow or blood stem cell transplant are searching for a matching donor. A marrow or blood stem cell transplant is a way to treat and possibly cure people with leukemia, lymphoma and other deadly diseases. The Marrow Donor Program at Rutland Regional is committed to adding volunteer donors to the Be The Match Registry, a world-wide database of donors ready to give someone a second chance at life, at no charge to the potential donor. Rutland Regional is currently the only hospital in New England with a program of this type. All funds raised help cover the cost of the tissue typing required to place donors on the Registry. From my Corner

— by Susan J. Coons ...Jill... I want to share some very good news with those of you who are animal lovers and shared my grief over the passing of my dog, Cleo. Friday afternoon my daughter and I met at Stewarts, Route 22 in West Hoosick, and headed for the Menands Humane Society in her car. I had seen an adorable dog on their Web site and was eager to meet her. True to her picture and her breed, chocolate lab, she is wonderful. Tilts her head from side to side when I speak to her. She knows all the commands I’d ever be interested in using, such as “c’mon up here! (couch, chair, bed!)”, “lie down”, and “sit”. She’s very gentle and has a lot of energy. The first thing she did when I took off her leash in the yard was walk into the pool! She took two swims within minutes of each other. I’ve decided to name her Jill (her housemate is Jack, a cat!). She seems very happy, and so am I. She must have been loved very much, for her disposition displays such. The previous owner is in my prayers, as the reason for surrender was poor health of the owner. It must have been terribly heartbreaking to surrender a dog like Jill. I can only try to imagine. I’ll bring her in to work once in a while so that she knows how special she is. And folks seem to enjoy being greeted by a happy four-legged friend. ��

Oh, almost forgot to tell you...It was about 8:00 in the evening, after bringing Jill home and having her and my daughter’s dogs acquaint themselves. There was so much excitement, for all of us! We finally settled down and put on our pajamas; we were trying to wind down for the day. I was talking on the phone when Catherine interrupted me to say, “Ma! We forgot to pick up your car at Stewart’s!” We were so excited about Jill, and so busy talking that we drove right past my car on the way home! I donned my leopard print robe and we drove up to Stewart’s to pick up my car in our pajamas! ________________________________________________

Cambridge Historical Society and Museum Heritage Weekend

On Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11, the Cambridge Historical Society and Museum will celebrate the sixth annual Heritage Weekend at the Museum on Broad Street. The program will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Margaret R. Jenks of Granville, New York, who will speak on the subject, “Stone Cutters of Our Area”. Ms. Jenks has been a family genealogist since 1964 and a cemetery transcriber since 1978. She has published award-winning books listing all the cemetery inscriptions in over 225 cemeteries in New York and Vermont. She will be showing slides of the work of many area carvers including two of the earliest, Zerubbabel Clark of Shaftsbury and Enos Clark of Middletown. The morning’s second presentation will be by Sandra Davis, Cambridge Town Historian, who will speak on “Specific Needs of Cemeteries Old and New.” This will be followed by a trip to the Woodlands Cemetery where bag lunches will be available for sale to benefit Cambridge Historical Society and Woodlands Cemetery. This lunch in the cemetery follows an old Victorian tradition. If you stay in the afternoon you can also participate in a directed tour of the grounds. On Sunday, the Museum will be open from 1-4 p.m. for tours and exhibits. There will also be a drawing for the quilt picture. A Time to Remember

— by Mary Morrissey The sad and tragic events of 9/11/01 brought our community together on Friday, September 11, to remember those we lost that day and to support the families left behind. Almost four hundred attendees surrounded the gazebo at the Vermont Veterans Home to pay tribute. Three families from Bennington, who lost loved ones that day participated in the Memorial. We felt so honored by their presence and participation. They were an inspiration to us all. With us were Sally and Don Goodrich, who lost their son, Peter, on Flight 175 at the World Trade Center. They were joined by their family and their Afghanistan exchange student, Mohibulla Amin. Mrs. Ruth Gore, who lost her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and

Kenneth Lewis, who were flight attendants on Flight 77 that went into the Pentagon, was joined by her family. Father Jim Preskinis, Pastor of Sacred Heart St. Francis Parish represented the religious family of holy Cross of which Father Frank Grogan was a member. Father Grogan was stationed in Bennington at the Sacred Heart Church and school. He was also on Flight 175 at the World Trade Center. The middle school students from Sacred Heart School and their principal and teachers joined Father Jim. “White Wings Over Ameria” Dove Release saw over 40 states and other countries from around the world release over 4,300 white homing doves at the exact same time. Doris LeBlanc, owner of “Wings of Love” here in Bennington, brought this beautiful idea for our community to participate forward and asked if I could help. It was an honor to work with Doris to organize this memorial service. Police Chief Richard Gauthier organized the Police Honor Guard that led representatives from Fire Departments, Rescue and First Responders and Law Enforcement Agencies from across Bennington County to the sound of bagpipes played by Kathy Buck. The community was well represented for this memorial by the participation and help of Reverend Robin Green; the Mount Anthony Union High School Choir and their director, Lynn Sweet; speakers Doris LeBlanc, Richard Gauthier, Don Goodrich, Father Jim Preskenis and Bill Hurley; Maurice Rancourt who played taps; Sacred Heart Middle School students; Rich Ryder; Mark Sawyer, Jim Kenyon and the Town of Bennington; Veterans’ Home; John Carpenter of E-Z Way Rental; CAT-TV and Michael Devens. At noon, Mrs. Ruth Gore surrounded by her family, Father Jim Preskinis surrounded by Sacred Heart students and Mohibullah Amin surrounded by the Goodrich family, each released a dove in memory of their loved ones who died on 9/11/01. Afghanistan exchange student Mohibullah Amin also wished for peace in his homeland as he released the doves. Doris LeBlanc andMichael Devens released 86 more doves that circled the memorial site, before returning home as Bennington Church bells and the U.S.S. Bennington Bell at the Town Office solemnly rang for two minutes. It is our hope that for all who attended this memorial they walked away with a sense of love, hope, peace and goodwill in their hearts.
