Bill Staines, a performer and recording artist with more than 35 years of touring New England and the nation with his blend of original works and original interpretation of the songs of others, will perform at the Meetinghouse Café of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Bennington on Friday, November 13, at 8 p.m. The Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse is located at 108 School Street in downtown Bennington. Admission is $15, and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Interfaith Council’s Emergency Food and Fuel Fund. Coffee, tea and desserts will be available for purchase. For over thirty five years, Bill has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill became involved with the Boston-Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960’s and, for a time, emceed the Sunday Hootenanny at the renowned Club 47 in Cambridge. Bill quickly became a popular performer in the Boston area. In 1971, after one of his performances, a reviewer for The Phoenix stated that Bill was “simply Boston’s best performer.” A decade later, both in 1980 and 1981, the annual Reader’s Poll of The Boston Globe selected him as a favorite performer. In 1991, Bill entered his fourth decade as a folk performer with an international reputation as an artist. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular singers on the folk music circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year.

Update on Lost Dog Jake

Jake is still missing. He may have extended his area beyond the Berkshire Hills Country Club/Allengate Ave./Springside Park area. There was a reported sighting of Jake on November 4 in the area of Harry’s Market by Peck’s Road and Waconah Street. He was heading in the direction of the fire station on Peck’s Road. Please continue to look for Jake, and tell your friends, neighbors, and co-workers, too. Jake has been missing now for 7 weeks. He might appear shaggy, matted, and weak. As far as we know, he is not injured, but appeared tired. It is possible he is not getting enough food. He may require medical attention since he has not been on his anti-seizure medication during this time. Jake is microchipped. If found, please request that the vet’s office, shelter, or animal control officer scan him for the chip. A reward is being offered by Julie and Erik, their friends, and other field spaniel enthusiasts throughout the country. Berkshire Flower Company 23 Years and Going Strong — By Mary Ann White

Sometimes we just need to take the time to stop at small businesses along the way, to see what they have to offer and to meet new people. Having passed by Berkshire Flower Company on South Street in Pittsfield many, many times over the years, I finally took the time to stop and met a great lady named Bridget Brown who has owned and operated the shop for almost 23 years. Bridget informed me that The Quarry Snack Bar, one of the original snack bars in the area was located in this same building back in the 1940s and 50s. It later was the starting location for Guido’s, now located down the street in a much larger building. Bridget’s unique flower arrangements can be ordered for wedding parties, special events, parties or funerals Having worked on a farm in Richmond where flowers were grown, Bridget decided to try it on her own and opened Berkshire Flower Company in 1987, where not only does she sell flowers, but several consigners have their work for sale, also. Among them are a painter, card maker, an older gentleman who makes wooden tables, a wicker furniture builder, and a carver, who has a lot of his work displayed outside. This carver will also do onsite work, carving a tree in your yard. Bridget was quick to state that though she did not have many flowers in her shop right now, she will have a shop full for Thanksgiving, and delivery is always available. For the Christmas holiday she will have handmade wreaths and roping available. Her November 11, 2009

greens are bought locally from Worthington. She said she tries to stay local and does believe in recycling, purchasing many of her vases from Goodwill. The rustic shop was unique inside and out, with a large area off to the side that is planted yearly with flowers that are available in the shop. Located at 910 South Street (Pittsfield-Lenox Road), the shop is easily acces-

sible, with plenty of parking. Berkshire Flower Company is open 9-5:30, Monday through Saturday, closed for the month of January, opening the week before Valentine’s Day. New Director Calls Therapy ‘Rewarding’

Anyone who has been through physical therapy knows how good it feels to return to normal life. But therapy doesn’t just benefit patients: it benefits therapists too. “No matter how old or young your patient is, you can always do something to help them improve their lives,” said Karen Staniels, the new Director of Rehabilitation Services at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation. “It is very rewarding.” As the new director, Staniels has a lot of ideas for improving even more people’s lives. She has re-introduced outpatient therapy, and is also developing public workshops to help people integrate better habits into their everyday activities. Awesome Animal Adventures

Awesome Animal Adventures continue at the Pember Museum with North American animals on Wednesday, November 18 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be a slide show featuring landscapes and animals, lots of hands-on animal artifacts and activities. Casper, the friendly ferret will be present for a weasel demonstration. All young participants will be entered into a free raffle for a handmade bone necklace. This is a free public program for children and adults of all ages. Registration is not required. Sage City Symphony Opening Concert

On Sunday, November 15, at 4 p.m., the Sage City Symphony, under conductor and music director Michael Finckel, will present its first concert of the 2009-2010 season. Free and open to the public, the concert will be at Greenwall Auditorium in the VAPA Building on the Bennington College campus. The concert will open with three Chorale Preludes by J.S. Bach. Seventeenth-century hymn tunes originally written for organ, these works have been arranged for orchestra by Michael Finckel. Dr. Jeffrey Winseman will be the soloist in The Lark Ascending, a work for violin and orchestra by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Born in 1872, Vaughan Williams had an active interest in English folksong, and collected such melodies which he often incorporated into his music. Begun in 1914, work on The Lark Ascending was suspended by the outbreak of World War I during which time Vaughn Williams served as an ambulance driver. It was completed and received its first public performance in 1920. The Lark Ascending, based on a poem by George Meredith, is intended to convey the lyrical beauty of the skylark as it rises into the heavens and attains such height that it is barely visible to those on the ground below. It then begins to sing. Jeffrey Winsemen was educated at the Mannes College of Music in New York before he began his medical studies. At Mannes, he was a student of Shirley Givens and performed with the Mannes Chamber Orchestra. He also attended and performed at the Aspen Music Festival and the Ecoles D’Art Americaines in Fontainebleau, France. Coming from a music family, Dr. Winseman played in local orchestras and chamber ensembles in his home state of Nebraska. Prior to attending Mannes, he won a full scholarship in violin performance to the University of Nebraska. He has been a member of Sage City Symphony since 1998, freelances locally and studies with Lilo Kantorowicz Glick in Bennington. This is Dr. Winseman’s first solo performance with the orchestra. Closing the November 15 concert, Sage City Symphony will perform the Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Opus 36, by Tchaikovsky. Composed during 1877-78, initial critical reaction to the work was unfavorable. One critic said of it that “the composer’s twaddle disturbed my mood. The confusion in brass and the abuse of the kettledrums drove me away.” Another thought it should have been called “A Sleigh Ride Though Siberia.” But subsequent performances earned better receptions. Proving early critics wrong, the symphony has become a standard of the orchestral repertoire and is one of the most frequently performed and beloved symphonies written in the 19th-century.

Open House at Bennington Bookshop

The Bennington Bookshop was established in 1928 by Ron Sinclair. He purchased the Griswald Department Store, which was located approximately where the Bennington Banner now stands. Griswald’s was a general store carrying everything from sporting goods and bicycles to toys and books. Sinclair then changed the name to The Bennington Bookshop and later sold the store to Joe and Emely Parks, who then sold it to Jay and Joan Zwynenberg. The store was involved in several of the major fires that occurred on Main Street and each time relocated to other locations in the same block. By 1979, the Zwynenburgs had located the store at 416 Main Street. At that time, the store consisted of a major line of greeting cards, office supplies, art supplies and a small book department. In November of 1979 Rick and Ellen Havlak purchased the book department along with the name The Bennington Bookshop. The Havlaks have moved the Bookshop twice and have been located at 467 Main St. since 1995. To celebrate their 30th year as owners of The Bennington Bookshop, the Havlaks are hosting an open house for their customers, past, present and future, on Friday, November 13 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. ________________________________________________

Join the Fireﬁghter Parade & Celebration

Usher in the holiday season on Friday, December 4 as Hoosick Falls pays tribute to area fire departments with a lighted holiday parade and treelighting ceremony. The Hoosick Youth & Community Center and the Youth Impact Team, a part of Hoosick Area Partnership for Parents & Youth (HAPPY), are organizing this event with the Village of Hoosick Falls. Fire Engine Parade Activities begin at 6 p.m. with a parade of fire engines decked out for the season. The parade will line up at the Hoosick Falls Fire Department and travel down Main Street to Wood Park. Please come out and cheer on our volunteer firefighters. Local organizations, churches, families, groups and individuals are invited to participate with a lighted float of their own. Participants must be in place by 5:45 p.m. to step off promptly at 6 p.m. Santa & Treelighting Arriving with the parade will be the man of the season – Santa Claus himself – so be sure to bring the kids! Supplies to create ornaments for the Village Christmas tree in the Wood Park gazebo will be available. The treelighting, led by Santa, will take place in Wood Park at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to witness this symbolic kick-off to the holiday season. Upsy Daisy Florist is providing the park decorations. Merchants Participating Upsy Daisy Florist on John Street will have a special open house from 6-8 p.m. on December 4. Local eateries will also be open for all to enjoy before, during and after the parade and treelighting. During the next few weeks, firefighter theme holiday Dalmatians will be popping up in storefronts throughout the Village. Historic Park-McCullough Announces 2009 Holiday Events

Historic Park-McCullough will present several special events for the 2009 holiday season. The season has special resonance for Historic Park-McCullough because Trenor and Laura Park and their family moved into their new house in North Bennington on Christmas Day in 1865. To this day, Park-McCullough is filled with the furniture, art and objects that surrounded them and their descendants for the 100+ years the family lived in the house. Friday, November 27, Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29: The house will be open for tours from noon to 4 p.m., Thanksgiving weekend. This is an opportunity to see the house that is often described as “Vermont’s Jewel” in full holiday regalia. It has been decorated beautifully by a group of dedicated volunteers. Elegance and history meet in the sumptuous rooms, enhanced by beautiful decorations and friendly guides. Village Ambulance Service Launches Membership Drive

Village Ambulance Service, the non-profit ambulance service which provides emergency and non-emergency medical transport services to Williamstown, Hancock and New Ashford, is launching its 2010 Membership Drive this week. Membership brochures seeking support from the residents and businesses in the three communities are being mailed in an effort to reach 2010’s goal of $67,000, which is about 7 percent of the projected operating budget. The service depends on the annual membership from individual residents and families, and sponsorships from area businesses to help defray operational overhead. Thomas Bleezarde, president of the Village Ambulance Service Board of Directors, noted that “while the capital fund did suffer in the recent market downturn, the service expects to weather this economic storm, and will continue to provide a full menu of services to the residents and visitors of Northern Berkshire.” Village Ambulance Service has operated within its budget for the past several years and, despite current national economic woes, hopes to repeat this feat in 2010.
