The St. Petersburg Russian Men’s Ensemble returns to Bennington to present a concert at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 200 Pleasant Street, Bennington, Vermont, on Wednesday, December 9, at 7:30 p.m. Kirill Sokolov, Alexander Korbakov, Evgeny Vischnevsky, and Vadim Smantser, the four singers who make up the St. Petersburg Russian Men’s Ensemble, are all skilled musicians who bring extensive training and experience to the presentation of a repertoire that encompasses various periods and styles, including ancient Russian chants, Western European choral music, and works by contemporary composers. Since one of the goals of the ensemble is to popularize Russian music, their program includes Russian folk songs, secular compositions, sacred works,

The December ordering date for the Extra Helpings Community Food Buying Club in Stephentown is Thursday, November 19, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Stephentown Federated Church on Garfield Road. The Extra Helpings program is part of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. It allows anyone to buy nutritious food at lower-than-retail prices. There are no limits on age, income, number of bundles, or geography, so all smart shoppers are welcome and encouraged to participate. — by Susan J. Coons October was a difficult month. I lost two dear friends, Mary Anne Lucas and Kitty Hittle. Mary Anne was bright, very intelligent and loved antiques. Her favorite thing was to crawl through attics and basements looking for forgotten precious heirlooms. Kitty was loving, kind and thoughtful. She was compassionate and understanding. Wherever there was a need for comforting, Kitty was there. They both passed away while I was in Florida. It’s difficult to write my column this week because of this distraction, but I do have some news to pass on to you... ...up a tree... My friend, Neil, a seasoned hunter, can tell you some dos and don’ts about tree stands. When you hike deep into the woods and climb a tree with your tree

stand, don’t kick down your bottom rung. It seems he spent quite a while 30 feet up trying to figure out how to get down! He didn’t have his cell phone with him either (lost it in the woods!), but I think that’s a good thing. Imagine what his fire department buddies would say if they had to send a ladder up the tree for him! Manly men out to rescue a manly man. He shinned his way down, and has the scrapes to prove it! Oh, by the way...the tree stand works just fine.

‘Universal Health Care’ Printmakers of Bennington College Exhibit Work at VAE’s Mill Gallery

The Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) presents “Universal Health Care,” an exhibition of work by seven advanced printmaking students from Bennington College, at VAE’s Mill Gallery at the Sage Street Mill from Saturday, November 28 Genevieve Senchyna rolls ink. through the end of February. Usher in the holiday season and visit with Santa Claus at the Hoosick Youth & Community Center’s Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, December 13. To accommodate everyone’s schedule there will be two seatings; one at 8:30 a.m. and one at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are limited for each seating, so purchase early for first choice. A family-style breakfast, including pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, assorted fruit, muffins, and beverages, will be served. Santa will make his appearance at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and will stay to visit with the children at each seating. He will be accompanied by several elves offering face painting and other surprises. During the breakfast, the elves will also be collecting donations for the Hoosick Falls Food Pantry and the HFCS Christmas Wish Project. Anyone who is able is asked to bring non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, new children’s clothing items, hats, mittens and scarves. Whimsical Exhibition of Greeting Cards on View During Festival of Trees From November 19 through December 31, the Bennington Museum will have on exhibit “Season’s Greetings - Holiday Cards by Don Trachte and Friends,” adding a whimsical touch to the annual Festival of Trees Celebration. Beginning in 1934, Don Trachte worked with the famed cartoonist Carl Anderson creating often humorous holiday cards which were sent to family and friends. After Anderson’s death, Trachte continued this tradition for over seven decades and included the domed-head, big-eared, full-checked character known as “Henry.” The Trachte holiday card collection is on loan from Don Trachte, Jr. who now lives in Bennington, Vermont. The Henry cartoon strip, created by Carl Anderson and Don Trachte, originated in 1934 and appeared in both daily and Sunday papers. It was this same year that Henry made his debut on the first Christmas card produced by Anderson and Trachte. Each year after that, Christmas cards were made by first sketching the images, photographing them, and through a process called zinc plate, creating a metal block capable of replicating the image on a flat bed press. During the 1930s, the method of zinc plate press block was used by the pair to make the annual Christmas cards which grew in production to 100s of cards. In 1941, World War II interrupted the Henry Christmas card tradition but was quickly picked up again in 1945. Anderson died in 1948, and in that year Trachte made a special Christmas card to

honor and remember his life. Trachte continued the tradition of card making and mailing hundreds of cards each year. In the 1950s and 60s Trachte discovered that carved images out of wood and linoleum sufficed to print the cards as effectively as the laborious process of zinc plating. However, carving was laborious as well, and by the 1980s and 90s he switched to the use of the copy machine. Very easily he could draw the gag or cartoon and instantly copy as many as he wanted. Trachte’s last card was completed in the year 2000, showing Henry carrying a letter message and it says, “This message has been 2000 years A-coming and high time too.” Other cartoon characters that appeared on Holiday Greeting cards during this time frame included Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy, Bob Montana’s Archie, Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant, Mort Walker’s Beetle Bailey, and Rube Goldberg. Statue of Seth Warner at the Bennington Battle Monument

Seth Warner - is it really you? Join the members of the Bennington Historical Society on Thursday, November 19 at 7 p.m. when Clifford Mullen presents the character of Seth Warner, the fascinating and to many, impressive leader of the era of the War for Independence. The program is held at the Bennington Museum and is free and open to the public. In his depiction of Warner, Mullen will address topics such as why Warner was made the commander of the Green Mountain Boys instead of Ethan Allen; the operations in Canada that gave Warner his reputation as an effective commander and led to him being selected as commander of the Rear Guard Brigade at Hubbardton and why Warner was chosen over three available Brigadier Generals. He will look at the operations of the Brigade that Warner commanded for the rest of the Burgoyne Campaign, and what actually happened to Warner as the war wound down in the Northern Theater. ‘A Celtic Christmas’

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute kicks off the annual Williamstown Holiday Walk with an Irish flair by welcoming the storytelling, music, and dance of Tomáseen Foley’s “A Celtic Christmas” on Friday, December 4, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $28 ($25 for members and children) and can be purchased by calling 413-458-0524 or online at clarkart.edu. Advanced ticket purchase is recommended as this event will sell out. Now in its eleventh year of touring nationwide, “A Celtic Christmas” is an exciting exploration of Ireland’s rich cultural history that highlights the innocence and joy of the night before Christmas through storytelling, music, and dance. The performers recreate the warmth of Foley’s childhood Christmases in western Ireland with carols, reels, jigs, and stories. Foley was born on a small farm in the remote parish of Teampall an Ghleanntáin in the west of Ireland. He is considered a master of the Irish narrative and a keeper of the flame for a priceless piece of Irish culture. “A Celtic Christmas” also features Grammy Award-winning guitarist William Coulter, traditional sean-nós singer and harpist Sile Denvir, and world-champion level Irish dancer Brian Bigley on Irish fiddle, uilleann pipes, whistles, and flute. The Spirit of Sharing Program in Bennington started over 25 years ago. Eunice Schleif was the founder of this humanitarian program that has served many over its long, proud history. Over the years Eunice worked with Bennington area service organizations and businesses to deliver this program. Our beloved Eunice passed away last year as we were well on our way into organizing the 2008 Spirit of Sharing Program. Our loss was great and our challenges increased without her leadership. We were able to deliver the program because many of the necessary steps were in place that Eunice and the committee had put into place over the years. As we started to organize this year it was apparent that we were not going to be able to put into place several critical steps to the program. All members of the committee decided that for this year in the true spirit of sharing and in honor of Eunice that we would give a significant donation to the Interfaith Council’s Food and Fuel Fund to help those in need in these difficult times. This program is not just limited to holidays. PAVE Receives Donations from Curves of Bennington

In support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Curves of Bennington collected donations during October from members and staff. Items donated included a monetary donation; personal care items such as soaps, deodorants, shampoos, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products and non-perishable food items including pasta, cereals, soups, and baby formula. Owner Judy Brownell said “we are a community of women who want to help not only each other, but reach out to meet the needs of our community and this is just one way to do that.” This is the fourth consecutive year Curves of Bennington has participated in PAVE’s annual drive. _________________________________________________

Bennington Eagles Thanksgiving Dinner

Free Thanksgiving dinners will be delivered to seniors, handicapped individuals and shut-ins on Wednesday, November 25, from noon until all are delivered. For delivery, call BROC at 802-447-7515. The deadline for signing up is Thursday, November 19. Dinner with all the fixings will be served in the Buffet Room at the Eagles Club, Washington Avenue, Bennington, Vermont, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. There is a $4 donation for the dinner. ________________________________________________

Interfaith Council Thanksgiving Service

Everyone is invited to the Interfaith Council of the Northshire’s annual Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday, November 24, at Christ Our Savior Parish (St. Paul’s) in Manchester. The Rev. Kathleen Clark of The Federated Church of East Arlington will bring the message. Those attending are invited to bring non-perishable food to fill the shopping cart for the Food Cupboard.
