Dragon Hatched at Bennington Museum

When was the last time you saw a roaring dragon with steam swirling from its nostrils? When was the last time you saw any dragon? Come to the Bennington Museum to experience just that. “Dragon, Hatched,” one of the many pieces in the upcoming State of Craft Exhibition is now standing in the outside courtyard of the Bennington Museum. Visit on May 29 — free admission for State of Craft Community Day — when its nostrils will be steaming and it will be hissing. Not to fear, but to delight everyone as they approach it. Created by Peter Krusch of Cambridge, Vermont, “Dragon, Hatched” is one of the 125 pieces being installed at the Bennington Museum for the State of Craft — Exploring the Studio Craft Movement, 1960-2010 Exhibition. The flagship exhibit of a statewide celebration, State of Craft will open on May 22 and be on view through October 31. Peter Krusch is a blacksmith and sculptor who lives beneath Mount Mansfield in northern Vermont. His work ranges from traditional ironwork to imaginative fountains, weathervanes and sculptures. Krusch combines the ancient methods of forge and anvil, with modern welding techniques to produce unique works in iron and copper. Krusch’s move to Cambridge, Vermont in 1958 was inspired by his fondness of skiing, his desire to farm and the price of land which was inexpensive north IN THIS ISSUE: of Stowe. At a craft show in Craftsbury, he saw some ironwork and realized he could do that since he had already taught himself to forge in order to repair equipment on his farm. Within a couple of years, Krusch was selling his forged iron craft at the American Craft Council shows in Baltimore and Rhinebeck. At one point he found himself filling an order for 600 pokers for Crate and Barrel. Each individual scale on “Dragon, Hatched” is hand-cut, brazed to a steel armature, and then patinated. The “voice” of the dragon is a product of a calliope tube within the body. Water introduced on a hot plate in the belly flashes to steam and is forced through the calliope tube, causing the dragon to roar and steam to swirl from the nostrils. ...these shoes are made for walkin’... My friend in California told me about a new pair of shoes she bought for walking. She loves them and said they have made a big difference in her back and knee pain. Linda isn’t one to spend money on herself. In fact, she’s very careful with her funds. When she said she bought this new pair of shoes, I was a little surprised. She said they were pretty expensive but well worth the price. They’re “Shape-Ups” made by Skechers. After our phone conversation, I looked them up on the internet. Wow! Yeah, they are expensive! I was shocked that she would spend so much on a pair of shoes! Sneakers, yet!

Since that conversation, I’ve heard from others who swear by their Shape-Ups, raving about their comfort, how great they are for walking, and light on their feet. So for my aching back, knees, feet and ankles, my daughter gave me a pair for Mother’s Day. Now I’m adding myself to the list of rave reviewers for these shoes. I don’t want to take them off. I’ve been wearing them for a week and I haven’t had any problems with my knees, feet or ankles. My back doesn’t ache, either. These shoes are so comfortable that I feel I can walk anywhere, anytime. How Much is My House Worth??

— by Kathy Sollien As a realtor we are asked by sellers to help them to determine a listing price for their home. This process is called preparing a Comparative Market Analysis or CMA. The first step is to actually make a visit to the house to see for ourselves the size and condition of the home, any upgrades that might have been made and how well-maintained the house has been. Making a trip to the town office is the next step to get copies of the lister’s card which give details such as the approximate age of the home, square footage, assessed value and the size of the lot. A copy of the deed and the tax map are equally important to verify the ownership of the property, look for any easements or rights of way and anything else that might affect the marketability of the property. Checking our Multiple Listing Service, we look up past sales and what is currently on the market that might closely resemble the subject property as well as to tap into our experience as realtors. In looking at these statistics it becomes evident at what price similar homes are selling for which in turn helps us in advising the seller as to a reasonable price range in which to offer their house for sale. Although the Haitian earthquake hasn’t been in the forefront of the media lately, there is still great suffering being endured by the people of Haiti. Medical facilities are still quite crude and understaffed, and there are still people dying daily due to lack of food, water and proper medical care. Help is still urgently needed. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bennington is continuing its efforts to help. Currently on display at the UU Meetinghouse, located at 108 School Street, is one of the Haitian Peace Quilts. Raffle tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Bennington Bookshop, South Street Cafe, Spice-N-Nice, or from a UU member. We will be at this year’s Mayfest where the quilt will be on display and tickets will be available for purchase there. Peace Quilts is an organization that was originally established to teach women as well as men a marketable skill that could provide income for the quilters to help support their families. It has since become a recognized non-profit, all-volunteer humanitarian organization that assists in the development of quilting cooperatives in Haiti which also in the end, helps relieve poverty. A picture of the Haitian Peace Quilt is posted where tickets are available. The raffle will be open until June 15, the day of the drawing. Don’t miss the chance to own this beautiful quilt. The UUFB would also like to take this opportunity to thank the community for its support of the Haitian Relief Dinner held this past February. Thanks to you, nearly $1700 was raised which was sent to Doctors Without Borders.

Celtic Weddings By Christie Harris

You just announced your engagement to family and friends and the wedding planning advice is overwhelming. There is only one thing you know for sure; that is, you want to celebrate your heritage with a Celtic wedding. There are nine parts to a true Celtic ceremony: the casting and consecration of the circle, the presentation of the bride and groom, the statement of the Bard (poet or lyricist) about marriage, declarations of the bride and groom (vows), the exchange of rings, fasting of the hands, passing of light, Thanksgiving and Oath, and the blessing and opening of the circle. Any or all parts can be used for the ceremony, and there are many variations of each of the nine parts to consider. There are other traditions that can be incorporated into a Celtic

wedding. Music plays a large part and bagpipes are one of the most distinct instruments used. There are plenty of great Celtic artists in today’s music scene, so finding a mix of

appropriate music is easy to do. The bride and groom often carry a horseshoe for good luck. Since the real thing is a bit awkward and heavy, consider small horseshoe pins that can be worn on a lapel or tacked to the hand-fasting ribbons. Brightly colored wedding dresses and kilts are the traditional garb, and barefoot couples signify their connection to the Earth. Herbs play a role as well, and can be tucked into the bridal bouquet, the groom’s boutonnière, and incorporated into an arrangement on the alter. Rosemary is used to symbolize love, loyalty, and fidelity. Sage is for wisdom and long life. Thyme is for bravery, courage, and strength, and lavender is a symbol of love, loyalty and devotion. Of course, no Celtic celebration is complete without plenty of food, drink and dancing. In traditional times, these celebrations lasted for days! If you are unable to find a minister to perform a Celtic ceremony, consider asking a close friend or family member to be your Bard and minister. A Justice of the Peace standing by to make it legal by signing the marriage license is all you will need. Good luck and many blessings for your big day.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. It’s a well-known saying that’s been passed from generation to generation, and many brides seek meaningful old, new, borrowed and blue items to carry with them on their wedding day. The saying’s origins are suspected to be English and perhaps during the Victorian era. Each item represents good-luck charms for the bride and each heralds happiness, optimism, hope, and loyalty with friends and family. The color blue has been popular for centuries, beginning in ancient Rome where brides wore blue to symbolize fidelity and modesty. Indeed, Christianity’s own Virgin Mary is dressed in blue symbolizing purity and love. Although no bride wants rain on her wedding day, it is considered to be good luck. Arachnophobia? In England, finding a spider in your wedding dress is also good luck. English folklore also states that Wednesday is the best day to

marry, while Saturday is considered to be unlucky. For ancient Romans, the veil was thought to protect the bride from evil spirits. Today, a veil is more of a fashion statement and many modern brides go without. The “stag” party, a loud and boisterous gathering where men said goodbye to their single days, dates back to the days of the Spartans. In America it is considered to be unlucky for the groom to see the bride on their wedding day before the ceremony, but in France the groom might escort the bride to the church or chapel. For the Celts, hand-fasting is a traditional binding of the couple’s hands and it is believed that this ritual is where the phrase “tying the knot” originated. Whatever your beliefs, your wedding day is a proclamation of love and fidelity. Rain, nor snow, nor spiders, nor evil spirits can change that.
