Vermont Veterans’ Home and Vermont Arts Exchange Celebrate National Nursing Home Week This celebration will feature music, dance, poetry and visual arts created by the veterans and members of the Vermont Veterans’ Home, as well as refreshments and fun! Special guests include poet Verandah Porche of Guilford, Vermont, dancer Michelle Pearson of Raleigh, North Carolina, acclaimed singer-songwriter Bernice Lewis of Williamstown, Massachusetts, and visual artist Matthew Perry of North Bennington, the artistic director of Vermont Arts Exchange and curator of this year’s visual arts exhibit by VVH residents. The nine-year arts partnership at the Vermont Veterans’ Home allows the healthcare facility to offer multi-disciplinary arts and healing programs to residents and caregivers including therapeutic arts consultation, hands-on staff trainings, a Caring For Caregivers program, an onsite visual arts studio and guest artist residencies. The partnership had its start with the Dementia Program and created a significant impact on the residents’ quality of life - reaching residents with advanced dementia who can otherwise be difficult to connect with - and has expanded throughout the Vermont Veterans’ Home facility to reach everyone. Hank Barthel Honored in Arlington

Hank Barthel was honored on April 27, for his 28 years of service to Arlington Memorial High School. The dedication followed poet Laureate Donald Hall’s heartfelt reading; one of the many great poets Barthel has brought to Arlington. During his tenure he introduced the students to 13 award-winning poets. Single-handedly Barthel was able to convince and negotiate wonderful poets to visit Arlington and speak with the students. Barthel has encouraged his students to explore their own love of poetry. His passion for poetry was reflected in a touching commemorative to his hard work and dedication.

Poet Laureate Donald Hall Attends Arlington Event

Poet Laureate Donald Hall performed on Tuesday evening, April 27 at the Mack Performing Arts Center at the Arlington Memorial High School. The event was to honor Hank Barthel for his 28 years of service to Arlington Memorial High School. The evening started with a meet and greet that allowed visitors and students to ask questions and chat with the poet. Hall then read aloud from his book “Life Work” and “The Poet Laureate Donald Hall Best Day The Worst Day: Life — Photo by Loretta Barthel with Jane Kenyon” and poems that he had written the morning of the event. The Arlington School’s Friends of Poetry were celebrating their 20th anniversary. ________________________________________________

Peace Resource Center Sponsors Film Showing ‘Capitalism: A Love Story’

The Peace Resource Center will present a showing of the film, “Capitalism: A Love Story” at the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse in Bennington on Friday, May 14 at 7 p.m. A discussion period will follow the film. The recipient of numerous nominations for best documentary, Michael Moore’s Capitalism explores the impact of our capitalist system on everyday people. Moore demonstrates that although it is a system that claims to reward free enterprise, it actually rewards greed. “Moore sees our abusive relationship with capitalism as a growing plague. His movie, a genuine and welcome rabble-rouser, lays out the history of how democracy got corrupted. Moore’s enemies label him as a fat, fatuous irritant who leans toward the overblown, inflammatory and clownishly silly. What’s with those crazy stunts like making a citizen’s arrest on the board of AIG or hanging yellow crime-scene tape around the banks?” —Peter Travers, Rolling Stone The event is free and open to the public. St. Mary’s Academy Car Wash

The 7th and 8th graders at St.Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls, New York, will be holding their annual car wash on Saturday, May 15. Bring your car to the school parking lot at 4 Parsons Avenue and have the exterior “spring cleaned” for just $5 per vehicle. Proceeds from this event will go towards the school’s annual fundraiser held each May. The annual Funtastic Fair will be held this year on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12 on the school grounds. Along the Way, The Blessings of Grandmothers — by Cindy Butler

“Family is the most important thing in the world.” (Princess Diana) My Scots-Irish grandmother, Carrie (Oneal) Miller, was the shining light in our family. Over the years, she wore a variety of hats: cook, nanny, housekeeper, nurse, and coach, among others. Many times she was gently teased about her height, or lack thereof. Petite at less than 5 feet, she and grandpa made an interesting pair, as he was over 6 feet tall. In her younger years she had beautiful red hair, green eyes, plump cheeks, and freckles galore. When grandma and grandpa met at a dance, he thought she was a cute young thing and tossed popcorn at her to get her attention. After they married in central Illinois in May 1916, they moved to Missouri, grandpa’s home state. Later in their married life, they returned to Illinois. Grandma had come from a family of 14 and with grandpa’s help she begat her own large family. They had 12 children, two of whom died

in infancy. As her children grew, grandma was their motivation and inspiration. Whenever one of her brood would earn a school award (or in later years, a job promotion), she would say, “I glory in your spunk!” The family delighted in her unique phraseology (saying “of a morning” instead of in the morning). When something amused her, she would slap her knee and spill with laughter, uttering “by golly!” An apron was as much a daily necessity for grandma as her dress or shoes. They were the old-fashioned kind with armholes and a bib front to be slipped over the head and tied in back. This was her badge of honor - her uniform - worn in the perpetual work of being a homemaker and mother. I cannot see an apron today without thinking (Continued on page 6)

�� (Grandmother, cont.) immediately of her. Out of a sense of nostalgia, I began collecting farm-style aprons some years ago. My pride and joy is one of the last aprons that grandma ever wore: a gift of love to me from my Aunt Lucille. Grandma was also a first-rate gardener. Loving and caring was second nature to her, whether she applied those attributes to her plants, family, or friends. In 1985, she suffered an abdominal aneurysm and collapsed in her home. An ambulance rushed her to the hospital, where she lingered a very short time. In the years since her passing, I have come to realize that while she is no longer physically with us, her memory is vivid, loving, and constant. Whenever I have accomplished something special, I imagine her looking down from heaven saying, “I glory in your spunk!” Grandma knew about spunk, she lived it every day of her life.

On Saturday, April 24, volunteers of the Bennington Museum were treated to a home-cooked meal prepared by the staff of the museum. Stephen Perkins, executive director of the Bennington Museum welcomed those in attendance, and thanked them for the hours they have given to the museum, and the tasks they have undertaken. Summer is a 4 year old short hair pastel calico. She originally came to the shelter as a kitten in 2003, but was sent to a feral colony because the staff was unable to handle her. She has made a lot of progress in the past few years and is now able to be petted, even though she is still a bit shy. She gets along well with other cats. Dax is a three year old male Shiba Inu who came to Second Chance because he was abandoned in a burned-out house. Bennington Animal control took him in and provided for his care for the allotted five days and then surrendered him to SCAC. An independent little guy, Dax is interested in all new sounds and stimuli. Plucky and full of pep, Dax is a dog who is very happy to be alive and with his independent nature, he feels that he can certainly take care of himself. Having a defined job to do would be the best thing for Dax, since he is so spirited, active and smart. By utilizing his intelligence and harnessing his energy and drive, one could do some amazing things with Dax, anywhere from agility to

competitive obedience! We recommend an active, adult only home without cats. Other dogs may be possible upon introduction. If you are looking for a fun-loving rascal, then come and meet our brave Dax! Miracle is a 3 year old gray male. He is here with his brother, Keesa, because there were too many cats in the house and the owners were unable to care for them. He is a mellow shy guy who can be fearful and nervous at times. He will

Cricket Returns to Bennington

The sun is out, the grass is green and cricket is back at Willow Park! The Bennington County Cricket Club was founded in 2009 to bring one of the world’s most popular games to Southern Vermont. The club is open to everyone, teaches the game to newcomers and gives expats from around the globe a place to play cricket in the States! This year the BCCC will be putting on an exhibition Test Match on Battle Day Weekend, pitting a team of “Brits” (led by Lil’ Britain’s Kevin and Sarah Wright) against a team of “Yanks” (led by club founder, Chris Sobolowski) in a cricket recreation of the Battle of Bennington. The BCCC encourages anyone interested in the game of cricket to come to Lower Willow Park (behind Nemer Nissan) Sundays at 10:30 a.m. to watch, learn and play. Sides will be chosen in June with weekly matches leading up to the August 15 Battle Day Test, so come on out and claim your place on a team!
