Golf Classic Named in Memory of Community Leader Eunice Schleif Historic ParkMcCullough extends a cordial invitation to participate in its sixth annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 21. The annual golf outing is named in memory and honor of Eunice J. Schleif, who was the President of the Board of Trustees of ParkMcCullough, a community leader, caring friend and ardent golfer. The fun begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at Mt. Anthony Country Club in Bennington. The cost of the event includes greens fees, golf cart, a 19th Hole reception, the awards dinner and golfers’ premiums for all participants. Prizes are awarded in men and women’s categories, for both individuals and teams; categories include closest to the pin, long drive, lowest score, plus the usual golf prizes as well as some “surprise” categories. All proceeds benefit the Park-McCullough House Association, a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit local organization. Non-golfers may attend the post-golf festivities that begin at 5 p.m. and include the 19th Hole reception, dinner, the awards and an

auction. “Bring your friends and family to join in the fun,” says Lindy Lynch, Chair of the Schleif Memorial Golf Classic Committee. “ParkMcCullough has an admirable record of service to the community. When you participate in our golf outing, you have an enjoyable day of golf and you support the continuing operation of a local and a national landmark with more than 140 years of local, state and national history to share with present and future generations.” This year members of the Park-McCullough House Association and the Mt. Anthony Country Club receive a discount on registration fees for golf and for the dinner and reception afterward. Stephentown Strawberry Festival

Strawberry shortcake will star at the Twenty-ninth Annual Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 27, under the tent at The Berry Patch on Route 22 in Stephentown, New York. The feast, a fundraiser for the Stephentown Historical Society, runs from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Locally grown, freshly picked strawberries will be served on shortcake with real whipped cream and your choice of home-baked biscuits or golden yellow cake, or on ice cream sundaes. Pies, both whole and by the slice, will also be sold. You can also purchase jams, jellies, and strawberries to take home. Books for Bennington Wraps Up with ‘Lemon Dialogue’ On Thursday, June 17, at 7 p.m., Books for Bennington, a part of June Arts Festival will wrap up with a presentation by Sophia Healy, author of “Lemon Dialogue.” Held in the Ada Paresky Education Center of the Bennington Museum, Books for Bennington is free and open to the public. Every other novel by Sophia Healy has been essentially comedic, but in “Lemon Dialogue” a tragic event occurs in the first chapter. A father and his daughter drown when the clay bank of a river collapses. The ensuing chapters further describe that Sunday afternoon as seen by different members of the family, and look back on carefree evenings and days in the life of the family before the tragSophia Healy edy. The novel ends with the jumbled, very beautiful images passing through the mind of father and daughter as they drown. Sophia Healy was born in Middlebury, Vermont. She has attended Oberlin, Middlebury, and Bennington Colleges as well as Yale University. During the 1980s, she taught drawing and papermaking at Bennington College. More recently, she has taught drawing and sculpture in Mexico and Brazil. In addition to “Lemon Dialogue,” Healy has written “Lone Stars” and “The Robber Girl My Imaginary Youth.” In 2012, “The Adventures of Herr Esel and Friends,” a collection of short stories will be published in Germany. It will be distributed in Germany and the United States. The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9), Bennington, in The Shires of Vermont. Currently on exhibit is State of Craft, Exploring the Studio Craft Movement in Vermont, 1960-2010. The museum is just a short ride from Manchester, Williamstown, and eastern New York. Shefﬁeld Historical Society

A newly acquired collection of 19th century letters written from Sheffield to Connecticut by members of the Little family will be related to the Dan Raymond House where a later generation of the family lived. A tableau installation of period furnishings provided by local antiques dealers and members of the community will complete the scene. Come learn how the letters provide a new window into old times and behold the parlors of the museum utterly transformed. — by Susan J. coons ...twisted thinking... I can’t understand all the twisted thinking that is going on here in America and in Great Britain. Twist Number 1: Critics screamed that President Obama wasn’t scolding British Petroleum loud enough over their inability to address the crisis in the Gulf. Twist Number 2: President Obama tells the press he’d like to “...kick someone’s ass...” regarding the spill. Twist Number 3: President Obama hadn’t personally spoken to British Petroleum CEO Tony Hayward (salary of $1,045,000 with a bonus of $2,090,000). Twist Number 4: (And I saw this one coming...) Dominos. The British public is angry with President Obama because he is telling BP their lack of safety measures make them responsible for the disaster in the Gulf. Brits claim it is Obama, not BP causing their retirement investments in BP to plummet. Twist Number 5: Now the Brits are trying to convince one another that the situation is one of America vs. Britain. Twist Number 6: Little do the Brits know how many anglophiles there are in America. We love to listen to Brits or Australians speak. We love their accent. For a short time, President Nixon wanted to dress up White House guards in some of the pomp of Briton’s colorful Beefeaters, guards of the Queen’s London residence. That idea didn’t sit well with the American public. We may like the sound of the British accent, but most of us don’t go for the pomp and circumstance that goes along with it. Twist Number 7: The extreme right and Tea-Baggers want less and less government, but do want the government to take charge of the Gulf crisis! That really is a twist. My personal feeling on this whole tragedy is that I cannot watch the news. Looking at the devastation to the wildlife and estuaries is heartbreaking. Yes, we learn in Genesis that God gave man dominion over all. For me that’s a directive meaning that we have a responsibilitity to one another, and all of God’s creatures; the earth and the sky; every living thing. Volunteers Needed for VT-NH Race for the Cure

Happy 150th Birthday, Mahler!

Popular annual Tanglewood music lecturer, Jeremy Yudkin, will be presenting a lecture on Gustav Mahler for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at BCC (OLLI) in honor of Mahler’s 150th birthday. The presentation will take place at BCC on Saturday, June 26, from 10:30 a.m. until noon in room KIII. Professor Yudkin will reveal some remarkable secrets about Gustav Mahler, an Austrian late-Romantic composer. Mahler is largely considered one of the most talented symphonic composers of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Yudkin is a Professor of Music and Chairman of Musicology and Ethnomusicology at Boston University and a Visiting Professor of Music at Oxford University. During the summer, every Friday and Saturday afternoon, Professor Yudkin presents the Tanglewood Pre-Concert Lectures in the Lenox Library. The annual Komen VT/NH Race for the Cure®, which takes place this year at Hildene Meadows, in Manchester, Vermont, on Saturday, July 17, is still in need of volunteers. Prayer Tent at Relay For Life Event

Relay team members of the Missionary Alliance Church will again assemble the prayer tent that will be available for use at The Relay For Life at the Mt. Anthony Union High School track on June 26-27. The Missionary Alliance Church team offers the prayer tent to visitors as a quiet opportunity for refuge, reflection, and hope while at the event. Conference Explores The Worlds of Sherlock Holmes — by Sally Sugarman Calling all mystery readers, “Sherlock Holmes: The Man and his Worlds” looks at the world’s greatest detective through papers, panels, movies, music, scavenger hunts exhibits and much more at Bennington College, June 24-27. The event begins with a panel Thursday evening, a reception and films and runs until brunch on Sunday morning with a talk by authors Tracy Mack and Michael Citrin who have written a series of books about the Baker Street Irregulars. Sherlock Holmes began his career as a consulting detective in Victorian times, but has become the model upon which many other detectives have developed. Holmes came to his early readers in the form of short stories and short novels, but he has lived on in plays, films, television, comic books and many other forms. Optional forays include visits to the historical Park-McCullough House for champagne and croquet, to the Bennington Museum for a tour and reception, and Oldcastle Theater for a play of suspense and mystery. Panelists include Michael

Atkinson, author of “The Secret Marriage of Sherlock Holmes,” Steven Doyle, author of “Sherlock Holmes for Dummies,” and Lindsay Faye, author of “Dust and Shadow.” The keynote speaker will be Joseph Kestner, author of “Sherlock’s Men: Masculinity, Conan Doyle, and Cultural History” and “Sherlock’s Sisters: the British Female Detective 1864-1913.” The Baker Street Breakfast Club is celebrating its 20th year as a scion society. There will be Victorian music, stamp cancellations, drawings, quilts, mysteries to solve — surprises all the time. The registration fee for the conference is $60. Attendees can stay on the college campus for three nights and get six meals for $150. There are separate fees for excursions, and the banquet. Midsummer Eve Garden Tour Extravaganza

Get your planners out and mark the date: Hubbard Hall Projects in Cambridge, New York announces its Midsummer Eve Garden Tour Extravaganza to be held on Sunday, July 11. The tour will be held from 3-7 p.m. Participants can tour six diverse gardens in a loop extending from Eagle Bridge to Greenwich. These lovingly tended gardens are of varied sizes and ages, from long standing to almost new. One garden features a sunken garden next to a stone house once belonging to O.K. Rice, of the Rice Seed family. On this site various farm animals are part of the picture. And if you have ever wondered how to grow truly great tomatoes, this is the tour for you. One of our gardeners is a tomato expert, who had bountiful crops even during last year’s tomato disaster. There will be something to please everyone on this tour! Tickets for the tour are $15 and will be on sale at the Cambridge Community Garden on Washington Street in Cambridge beginning at 2 p.m. on the day of the tour or by prior reservation. New this year, we are also offering a Garden Tour Raffle with great garden related prizes including: three hours of professional gardening by five Dirt Divas, a one hour design consultation with Nancy Hand Higby, pruning of your ornamental shrubs by Anne Miller, a custom painting of your garden by Mary Lou Strode, hand built ceramic vases by Chung-ah Park and Keith Davitt, a hypertufa crevice garden, a hanging gourd plant holder and gift certificates from Clearbrook Farm and Equinox Nursery. Tickets for the raffle are $15 each. They are available from now to the day of the tour at the Hubbard Hall Office. Finally, you can join us for a wood fired pizza dinner after the tour at the Hubbard Hall Freight Yard Community Bread Oven. Cost for the dinner is also $15. Upward Bound at SVC to Offer Summer Food Service Program for Participants The Upward Bound Program at Southern Vermont College will provide free or reduced meal prices for qualified participants this summer, as part of the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, the program ensures that students who have received reduced meal prices during the regular school year will continue to have adequate nutrition throughout the summer. Meals are available at no charge to all children 18 years of age or younger who participate in the Free College Preparatory program during the six-week summer residential program on the campus at Southern Vermont College regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. Meals will be provided June 27 through August 5 (days of operation from Sunday through Thursday). Upward Bound at Southern Vermont College is a college preparatory program which helps students develop the skills, motivation and self-confidence necessary for success in and beyond high school. Southern Vermont is one of more than 500 participating colleges across the country and has been the home of Upward Bound in the Bennington area since 1979. Upward Bound is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. As your educators began to work their magic through utilization of your personal resources, they began to mix the mortar that would cement the foundation upon which you could build your future. You were all given the same skills but everyone was born with a different will. It is will that enables the success of your very being. Winston Churchill said: “It is no use saying ‘we are doing our best’. You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.” You have all learned what is necessary to receive good grades, be accepted as a peer and the effort required to be a team player. Knowing that, realize that you have been given a very important managerial position. You have been placed in charge of your life. We are fortunate to live in a country where regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs or social standing, nothing can handicap opportunity. Some of you will enter the workplace tomorrow. Some will seek careers that further education will provide. Everything you wish to get out of life is in your hands. Believing in yourself is crucial .Be your own best friend as you are the only one you can truly count on. “Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.” You have completed an extremely important chapter in the book of life. Close the cover and take a break because the remainder of the pages have deliberately been left blank for you to fill. Without lifting a pen the following chapters will be created by the mark you leave on the world. Calling All Little Leaguers, the Older the Better!

Norshaft Lions Park Renovation Committee is hosting the second annual Clenn Frost Memorial Baseball Tournament on July 10! Dust off your baseball glove! This is your chance to be a part of history! The Norshaft Lions Park Renovation committee is looking for recent and not-so-recent Little Leaguers (or other interested players) to play in an old-time tournament at the NorShaft field on July 10 (rain date: July 11). All proceeds from this fundraising tournament will go toward the cost of the renovations of the entire park including making the Little League field eligible for regulation play, updated concession stand, and a new band stand area to offer concerts in the park. Some of these renovations are already underway. We are close to reaching our goal but need your help to do so. So, take out that glove and head up to the Park on July 10. We are looking for as many local Little Leaguers and baseball players as possible to participate. The baby moose, known as “Adapt,” is beautifully decorated in a mosaic of tiles and natural stones and glass beads. It’s most striking feature is it’s glass unicorn horn — not something you usually see on a baby moose! Whoever did this dastardly deed left behind a valuable clue. If you would like to try your hand at locating the missing baby moose, please come to the Hawkins House craftsmarket anytime between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. starting Thursday, June 24 through Saturday, June 26, at 262 North Street in Bennington to get your first clue. This clue will lead you to other clues, and eventually to the missing baby calf. Once you locate the calf, you can enter to win prizes. Drawing will be held on June 27. Family of Five Loses Home to Early Morning Fire

Early Monday morning, June 7, my grandson awoke to the smell of smoke and the couch in flames and yelled fire! Since the power had been out for almost 24 hours due to the storm, the family had slept downstairs with the exception of 7 year old granddaughter Ashlyn. Carter woke his sister, Faith, and his parents. Junior ran through the flames at the bottom of the stairway and rescued his daughter Ashlyn. The family proceeded to evacuate their home of 4 years, and ran to the neighbor’s house for safety and dialed 911. Despite the heroic efforts of six fire departments, their home was burned to the ground and nothing was left. Junior received second degree burns on his back and will need to see a plastic surgeon. Out of the ashes I am asking for your help in rebuilding the lives of my daughter Bridget and her family. Conﬂict of Visions to be Discussed

Editor, amateur historian and lecturer Robert Maynard will discuss the differences behind our modern political struggles when he presents “Conflict of Visions” Thursday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bennington Free Library. “The tension between classical liberal ideas of spontaneous order and individual liberty under the law versus top-down social engineering has deeply divided America,” Maynard said. “Statists try and paint those who oppose their schemes as selfish and opposed to the public good,” he said. “The truth of the matter is that there are two opposing views on how best to realize the public good and the role that individual liberty plays.” Maynard is editor of “True North Radio” Web site and grassroots project director of the Family Security Foundation. The Theater Company at Hubbard Hall Presents ‘Another Antigone’

The Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall (TCHH) will present A.R. Gurney’s classically-inspired drama, “Another Antigone,” in its Freight Depot Theatre June 10 -27. “Another Antigone” is based on the Greek tragedy “Antigone” by Sophocles, a classic tale of how unbending hubris destroys all who fall prey to its spell. Gurney’s play is the same story, with some modern twists. Judy Miller, a gifted college senior, presents a short play to her Greek Theater professor, Henry Harper. She submits an updated, antinuclear version of “Antigone” in place of the formal paper assigned, and Harper is adamant in his refusal to accept her paper and threatens to fail her. A battle of wills ensues, as both of them refuse to budge from their convictions. There will be 10 performances of “Another Antigone:” June 10 (pay what you will / open rehearsal) at 8 p.m., June 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26 at 8 p.m., and June 13, 20, and 27 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for Hubbard Hall members, $24 for non-members and $15 for students and children. Father’s Day All You Can Eat Breakfast

Hoosick Youth Center Offers 2010 Summer Camps

The Friends of the Charlemont Fairgrounds (a non-profit organization) is having its third annual Father’s Day All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast. It is being held at The Charlemont Fairgrounds Route 8A North in Charlemont, Massachusetts. This event is one of the several fundraisers held during the year. The largest, which is coming soon is Yankee Doodle Days in July. The breakfast is being held from 8 a.m. to noon. $8 gets a pile of pancakes, sausage, bacon, juice and coffee. There is still time to register for the 2010 summer camp series offered by the Hoosick Area Youth Center and Community Coalition. Each of the five camp weeks will have a different theme to provide enrichment in fun, inventive and exciting ways. The following camps will be offered during the summer of 2010: • June 28-July 2 – Hammer Time! Participants will learn basic construction and building skills (including planning, material selection, and design). Beginner tool use will be involved – appropriate for all ages! • July 12-July 16 – Wild Rumpus. Children will explore monster stories, create monster puppets, and even dress up as their favorites! • July 26-July 30 – Once Upon A Me. Using various media from paint and clay to creative writing and film, participants will share the story of their lives and discover the magical life stories of some famous people. • August 9-August 13 – Splish, Splash Summer Bash. Water games, water crafts, and bucket loads of fun things to do in the summer will be part of this fun and active camp. • August 23-August 27 – Road Trip USA! Campers will explore the different cultures, customs and foods that make up our unique country. Camps are held at the Youth Center, 115 Church Street in Hoosick Falls, and run Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Snacks are provided. Children should “dress to mess” and bring a bag lunch. The group often takes walking trips to locations in the Village, such as Wood Park and the Town Athletic Field, so it is important to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Children in kindergarten to 6th grade are welcome. Space is limited and early registration is encouraged.
