‘Summer Sundays at Four’ at Park-McCullough House Have Begun

Historic Park-McCullough announces the first concert in the 2010 season of its acclaimed “Summer Sundays At Four” Concert Series with five concerts by noted artists performing programs of exquisite music. The Carriage Barn will once again provide the charming venue and splendid acoustics for these concerts. The series is under the artistic direction of Muriel “Petie” Palmer. The season opened on June 20, with a dual piano concert by Yoshiko Sato and Allen Shawn in a program of music by Mozart, Ravel and Leonard Bernstein. Yoshiko Sato graduated from Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, and continued her musical studies in Paris and the United Sates, receiving a diploma from the Ecole Normale de Musique d’Alfred Cortot in Paris, and from the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. She was a semi-finalist in the 1991 International Mozart Competition in Sarrbourg, France. Ms. Sato has given recitals in Japan, the United States, France, and Switzerland. Sign-ups are underway for the 2010 Summer Neighborhood Basketball League hosted by the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition. ...my purse, a.k.a. the garage... We had a two-car garage attached to our house when we lived in Pasadena, California. We could get both cars in the garage for the first few years. Slowly half of the garage was taken up with a lawn mower, yard tools, a refrigerator and a workbench. But our Chevy could still fit if it was driven right down the middle. That’s where all the space was. Over the years that space shrank down to an aisle for walking. We didn’t have an attic or basement for the kinds of things one puts away and doesn’t look at for years or decades, so it ended up in the garage. Yup, it was a dark mess! (Much like our attic and basement are now.) Last week my daughter asked me if I had any eyedrops. I said “Sure. They’re in my purse!” what I should have said was, “Sure, they’re in the garage!” My purse is a mess. It doesn’t matter if I use a bag big enough to carry a small dog, or something so little I can barely take out my wallet once I put it in the purse. No matter the size, the bag/purse I carry becomes “the garage” within a week. It’s like the front seat of my car which is another problem that I have. Right now there are three coffee cups sitting on the passenger seat. I’m going to remember to bring them in tonight. I promise myself that! I so admire women who are organized, calm, sophisticated, wear gold jewelry, and not a hair out of place...that is so not me. I thought I would have myself together by the time I was 30. It still hasn’t happened! I attended the opening day of croquet at Park-McCullough House two weeks ago, and I was the first person to help themselves at the hors d’oeuvres table. While balancing a drink on a plate in my left hand and my garage/ purse dangling on my arm, I reached across the table for the mustard jar. I knocked over the toothpicks in the process, which didn’t go unnoticed. A tall, well-dressed woman announced that “The toothpicks have already been knocked over.” Beet red and with my left arm held up at eye level, balancing plate, drink, sandwich, and purse dangling, I man-

aged to pick up the toothpicks and put them back into the little jar. I stayed away from the hors d’oeuvres after that incident and stuck close to the bar and fruit tray. Several years ago I had a really nice brown leather bag. It held everything including my lunch. I carried drawing pencils, kneaded erasers, little jars of ink, Crow Quill pens, and drawing pads as well as all the other things one carries including my wallet, hairbrush, lipstick, glasses, receipts, a book, hand mirror, keys, and what lifted like two pounds of loose change. The bag wore very well until I set it too close to a candle that I had lighted on my desk. Right now I’m carrying a Liz Claiborne bag. It’s only about 10 inches up and down and sideways. I cleaned it out Saturday but it’s fast approaching the state of “mess.” In my purse today are, right side: drawing pencil, pair of glasses, pen, glass repair kit (which Chris Sobolowski uses to repair computer things); middle section: 85 cents in change, one battered dollar, eye drops, two lipsticks, nail clippers, keys, an inahler, two pens, my wallet, two receipts, a shopping list, cell phone and second pair of glasses; left side: several discount cards that will allow me to make a killing at Lane Bryant, one sheet of postage stamps (shelter pets), two more pens, three additional receipts, and two more wrinkled up dollar bills. ...oops... I was informed by a reader that I used a word improperly in last week’s column. The word was “tea-baggers.” I never suspected that the word could be used to reference a sexual act. I apologize for that mistake. i should have said “members of the tea party.” I have heard news anchors use the word and seen it in print numerous times and never knew it could mean something else. Summer Programs

Mount Anthony Union Middle School is offering 22 summer programs starting July 5. These programs will run from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and are a great way to learn something new without the books, paperwork and homework of the regular school year. Some of the programs offered are: gardening, film making, trail hiking and blazing, real rock band, cooking, clay work, stained glass, wood burning, tie-dying, healthy living, animal care, you and the law, tennis, environmental science, poetry, fitness, racquet ball, and summer theatre. There’s also a great summer camp, Rosie’s girls, for girls in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. So don’t just sit around the entire summer. Relax, yes, but get involved in something, too. A Spaghetti Supper will be held at the North Bennington Fire Station on June 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. to benefit the children of Country Corner Daycare in North Bennington. The dinner will be prepared by Kevin Lynch from Kevin’s Sports Pub and Restaurant. Country Corner Daycare has been in business for 26 years. They are the only facility in the North Bennington and Shaftsbury areas that has an infant to school age program. Special Postmark to Mark Sherlock Holmes Conference

Bennington Arts Guild welcomed two guest artists Saturday night, June 19. Hope Barry creates small sculpture from recycled tin, metal and other found materials. Each piece is an altar to thoughts, memories and dreams. Greg Winterhalter, a valued artist in the Bennington community, has been living and creating art in the southern Vermont area since 1970. Greg contributed a moose to Moosefest. Winterhalter’s and Barry’s work will be on display until July 12 at the Bennington Arts Guild Gallery. The Bennington, Vermont Post Office is offering a special pictorial postmark to help celebrate Bennington College’s Sherlock Holmes Conference. Co-sponsored by The Baker Street Breakfast Club in celebration of the group’s 20th anniversary, the conference of scholars and aficionados “will explore the many worlds in which Holmes first moved and has moved since Dr. Watson stopped chronicling the adventures.” The Bennington Post Office will participate on Saturday, June 25 with a temporary postal station on-site from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. which will allow residents, stamp collectors and other visitors to obtain a unique postmark on a stamped envelope documenting the occasion. Specially authorized by the U.S. Postal Service, this special postmark (pictured) is a wonderful way to take home an inexpensive souvenir of this annual event. CAT-TV Announces Board Elections and Registration Process

Junior Girl Scouts Earn Bronze Award

Anna Brewer, Katy Gardner, Lexie Gates, Lauren Harrison, and Sydney Stowell from Hoosick Falls Junior Troop 1144 have earned their Bronze Award. The Bronze Award is the highest award Girl Scouts in grades 4 and 5 can earn. These girls are fifth graders at Hoosick Falls Central School. The girls held a Book Swap in the fall and again in the spring at HFCS. The girls collected books from their fellow students and the local community. Each child that brought in books to swap was able to take home as many as they brought in. Besides swapping books you could purchase books. The proceeds of $125 were given to the Hoosick Falls Cheney Library. The book swap was able to swap or sell more than 3500 books between both events. The girls also gave kids in K-fourth grade at HFCS and St. Mary’s Academy a �� free book, resulting in giving away another 1000 plus books! The girls �� still had more than 500 left to give �� to St. Paul’s Church in Troy, New York, which is having a book sale �� to benefit “Inn from the Cold,” an �� overflow homeless shelter in Troy. �� Having the chance and opportu�� nity to find books to enjoy reading �� is very important to these five girls. �� They wanted to open the wonder�� ful world of reading to all kids in �� Hoosick Falls.

Comcast Cable subscribers in Bennington, North Bennington, Woodford, Pownal, or Shaftsbury who are not already active CAT-TV members can register to vote in this year’s election by returning the registration card that will appear in the Bennington Banner from Monday, June 21 through Saturday, June 26, by registering online at www.catamountaccess.com or by contacting William Gardner at 802-442-8868. All registrations must be received by July 2, 2010. Official voting ballots will be mailed to all active CAT-TV members and registered Comcast subscribers on July 9. Completed ballots must be returned to the address provided by August 6. Votes will be tabulated by an impartial third party and will be announced at the CAT-TV Board Meeting on August 18. Free Community Meal in Cambridge

Allens Earn Award

June 26 will be the next free community meal held in Cambridge, New York. Meals are held on the last Saturday of each month with the exception of November and December at First Baptist Church in Cambridge from noon to 1 p.m. This month’s menu will be ham, homemade macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, applesauce, rolls, dessert and beverages. The meal will be provided by the Cambridge United Presbyterian Church. These monthly meals are organized by First Baptist Church of Cambridge, with the assistance of ten different community churches and organizations. Please Note: The church is now handicapped accessible. First Baptist Church is located on West Main Street between Glens Falls National Bank and the IGA store. Reservations are not necessary. Take-outs will be available for those unable to attend at 1 p.m. provided everyone has been fed. If there are questions, call Bev at 518-677-3327. The next community meal will be held on July 31.

a host of free, fun ways to learn more about all kinds of animals and strengthen the pet-person bond. There will be vendors such as Dibble Dogs (T-shirts, cards and other whimsical dog-inspired art and gifts); Wagatha’s organic dog biscuits, including some new flavors of these popular caninecookie treats; and dog and cat gear from Knapp’s. Among the exhibitors will be Mrs. Doolittle, animal psychic, hands-on healer and Home Hospice Caregiver(TM) for animals; the Bennington County Kennel Club, with tons of information about choosing the right dog for you, and then tips on how to care for it; Janet Andrea of Collie Rescue League of New England, along with “Kenny;” Caroline Albert of Click for Confidence, who will discuss the ease and benefits of clicker training, as well as demonstrate how it works, using volunteer dog; and Steve the Groomer Guy with his mobile pet-grooming service. We also hope to welcome back one of last year’s most popular guests, the dogs and their people from Caring Canines, who will explain how these wonderful therapy dogs bring joy and warmth to folks in life-care facilities, hospitals and children’s homes. Also on hand will be Bennington’s own pet photographer, Irene Goyette, and our friends at Mt. Anthony Veterinary Hospital, with helpful information about keeping your pets healthy and happy. Seven Year Old to Hold Fundraiser for Big Cats

Seven year old Alice Carvajal is holding a “Tiger-ific Lemonade Sale” on Saturday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Knapp’s Underground on Main Street, Bennington, Vermont. She will also be selling homemade cookies. Alice’s family visited Playa del Carmen, Mexico, two years ago, where they saw tigers, lions and miniature ponies being pulled behind a truck. The animals had no food, no water, and were exposed to unbearable heat in the hot Mexican sun. This treatment of the animals didn’t go unnoticed by Alice. The family returned last year, and the situation with the large cats and mini ponies had not improved. Alice had seen children on television raising funds by selling lemonade for a cancer fund. Working with her mom, they found an organization on the Internet that rescues big cats, Big Cats Rescue, located in Tampa, Florida. This organization was chosen because 100 percent of donations received will go to rescuing wild cats. Entrepreneurial Alice will be on the sidewalk on Saturday, June 26 offering you delicious lemonade and cookies for a very good cause. Stop by and thank Alice for her kindness. Sacred Heart Supports Relay for Life

Middle school students at the School of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales organized a school-based fundraiser to benefit the Relay for Life. A simple call to all students to bring in pocket change resulted in a $600 donation for the annual event held in June. The students who spearheaded the drive are enrolled in an elective class on Leadership. The check was presented to Sandy O’Neill, a parent of a current Sacred Heart student and alumni, who serves on the Relay for Life committee. The Leadership class, taught by Patricia Dailey, encourages students to be active in their local community. During the course, the students have also initiated a successful food drive for His Pantry, a food shelf at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church; led the recycling efforts at the school, and learned from and were inspired by community leaders who shared their experiences with the class. SVMC Appoints Dr. Mark Donavan to be Chief Medical Ofﬁcer

A local physician with extensive leadership experience, both as a hospital chief executive and a medical leader, has accepted the position of chief medical officer at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC). The hospital has tapped Dr. Mark Donavan, a lifetime resident of Bennington, to take the post beginning June 28. “I am extremely pleased to have Dr. Donavan joining SVMC as chief medical officer,” said Thomas Dee, the hospital’s president and chief executive officer (CEO). “Health care is changing in Vermont and across the country. We need strong leadership to adapt successfully to these changes and to continue to deliver the high quality care we are known for. Dr. Donavan has the breadth and depth of experience that we need during these challenging times.” “SVMC is a very special hospital to me,” Donavan said. “It is my community hospital. I began my medical career in Bennington, so I was excited by the opportunity to come full circle. I share the goals of SVMC’s physicians, nurses, and other staff of providing the safe, efficient, reliable care our communities deserve.” Donavan grew up in Bennington and attended the old Bennington High School. He graduated from Williams College, and his medical degree is from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and took his fellowship in medical oncology at Albany Medical College. Donavan is married to Suzy Donavan, who retired recently from June 23, 2010

a career as a reading teacher in the Bennington schools. They enjoy cross-country skiing, biking, and golf. They have two grown daughters, Margaret and Emily, and three grandchildren. Donavan’s brother, Peter Donavan, and sister, Sally Goodrich, also live in Bennington, and his brother Jed resides in Hoosick Falls, New York.
