First in the Nation Legislation Helping Vermont Merchants and Consumers

State Senators Dick Sears and Bob Hartwell, who introduced Bill S. 138; Tasha Willis, Vermont Retailers Association; Jim Harrison, Vermont Grocers Association; and State Representative Bill Botzow, chairman of the House Commerce Committee, explained the impact of law S. 138 to the press outside Willy’s Variety Store last Friday afternoon. This law prohibits numerous abusive practices directed toward Vermont merchants by credit card companies. The senate and legislature were unanimous in favor of this bill with the exception of only

one nay vote. The law, which will go into effect January 1, 2011, does so without the signature of Governor Douglas. At the present time, MasterCard and Visa take 85 percent share of the market with American Express grabbing ten percent and Discover five percent. Main elements of the bill are: • Prohibits the card companies from stopping merchants from setting minimums of $10 or less for card purchases; • Prohibits the card companies from imposing a fine or penalty relating to any merchant to provide a discount or other benefit for payment through the use of a card or electronic payment system, cash, check, debit card, store-value card, charge card, or credit card rather than another form of payment; • Prohibits the card companies from preventing merchants from deciding that they won’t take cards at one or more locations while still taking cards at other locations; • Requires the Vermont Banking and Insurance Department to review studies on credit card interchange fees charted to merchants and make recommendations to the legislature; • Institutes significant penalties for the use or possession of credit card skimming devices. Heritage Days Joint Worship Service

Congregations of the North Bennington Baptist Church and the Shaftsbury Methodist Church will come together for a combined worship service in celebration of American’s religious heritage. The annual service, known as Heritage Day, will be held at the white church on Route 7A, which is now the home of the Shaftsbury Historical Society on Sunday, July 4 at 10:30 a.m. Taking part in the service will be a combined choir from both congregations. Pastor Matthew Bowles of the Shaftsbury Methodist Church will deliver the morning message from the Word of God. The Reverend David Jinno, Pastor of the North Bennington Baptist Church will lead the order of service. Mr. George Paulin, organist, will lead the music. Weather permitting, a time of fellowship and refreshments will follow the service on the church lawn. The service is open to all. I was honored to be asked to contribute my thoughts regarding the tragedy of the assassinations of JFK, MLK, and RFK to accompany the exhibit by Look photographer Stanley Tretick, “Bobby, Martin and John: Once Upon an American Dream” opening at the Southern Vermont Arts Center on Saturday, July 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. I was reluctant at first because anything may seem trite compared to the magnitutde of the tragedy. After much thought, I agreed to write something. Below is what I submitted, which will be on display along with a letter from U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy and Bennington artist Ellen Viereck. November 22, 1963 Everyone who was more than two years old on November 22, 1963 remembers that day. If you were very young you will remember adults crying. You will remember their expression of shock and deep sadness. I was 21, a very naive 21. I believed in America. I believed policemen were there to protect me. I believed the good guys wore white hats, until November 22, 1963. I believed that our society lived in a modern world, more civilized and ages away from a time when men carried guns and assassinated presidents, until November 22, 1963. Movies like “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” and “It’s a Wonderful Life,” made me cry with happiness and confirmed my belief in the goodness of mankind, until November 22, 1963. I believed there would be no more wars. Our American President was young, a strong, respected and well-loved leader throughout the world, until November 22, 1963. I lost my innocence on that day. When great writers of history look back and examine those years and work to explain the anger directed at government, the distrust of all authority, and the upheaval of American society during the 1960s, they must first begin with our loss of innocence on November 22, 1963. 1968 proved to be the most violent year of that decade. It began with the assassination of Martin Luther King in April followed by the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in June through to the arrest of the Chicago eight (later seven) in August due to the violence that erupted at the Chicago Democratic National Convention. Americans had become numbed by race riots in Watts, California, anti-war marches and protests across the country including Washington, D.C. and New York City, all ending in catastrophic clashes with riot police using tear gas, clubs and other weapons by the end of the 1960s. November 22, 1963 changed the way I think about government, police, the military, authority of any kind, my place on this Earth and my role in my community.

Summer Potluck Dinner for Stephentown Historical Society

The summer potluck dinner meeting of the Stephentown Historical Society will be Monday, July 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Stephentown Firehall, 35 Grange Hall Road, Stephentown, New York. Those attending should bring a hearty appetite and a dish large enough to share, either main dish, salad, or dessert. Plates, utensils, and beverages will be provided. After dinner, Walter Wheeler will present an illustrated talk on 17th century Dutch vernacular architecture. Historians and researchers have long lacked the tools which would facilitate the creation of an adequate picture of how the first European-American immigrants lived in the upper Hudson Valley. Archeological excavations of the past forty years have brought to light remains of several 17th century structures located within the bounds of present-day Albany. Among these are the A. van Curler house and the Schuyler house at Schuyler Flatts, several houses within the Fort Orange site, and most recently the house associated with the brick kiln near the Quackenbush house. The building methods, materials and technologies used in the construction of these structures have been revealed by these archeological excavations. When the results of these investigations are combined with information culled from contemporary documents and historic graphic materials, a clearer picture of the development of a regional New World European building style can be assembled. Wheeler is Senior Architectural Historian at Hartgen Archeological Associates, Inc., in Rensselaer, New York.

Bob began his comedy career in 1986 when he entered the “Jewish Comic of the Year Contest” at the Going Bananas Club in Philadelphia. Television, radio and personal appearances followed as he quickly honed his distinctive approach to stand-up. He has been seen on Good Morning America, The Today Show, Showtime, the BBC, and CNN, among many others. Today, Bob performs nearly 80 shows per year, drawing tremendous audience numbers and response. His humor is fast-paced and sophisticated, yet gentle and unhurtful: all in all, a charming and affable comedian. In addition to his solo shows, Bob performs frequently in an extraordinary pairing with Muslim comedian Azhar Usman. Bob is the author of two books that further showcase his considerable talents: “Life Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This,” an inspirational collection now in its fifth printing, and the award-winning full-color cartoon book “A Rabbi Confesses.” Bob resides in East Dorset with his wife Sherri, a psychotherapist and Bennington native. Group Baton Lessons

The Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) is pleased to offer group baton lessons this summer. This fun activity improves coordination and physical fitness, while building teamwork skills and self-confidence. The “Twirlettes” will be instructed by Davia Plusch. A Headache Avoided

— by Kathy Sollien Thinking of selling your house or already on the market? Take a walk around with your Realtor and look at what could be potential issues that may arise with buyers or even their mortgage companies. With the new banking regulations, we are finding issues that rear their ugly heads almost at the last minute, leaving little or no time to address them. Take for instance an old furnace or the presence of asbestos in the basement. Depending on the type of financing, the appraiser may be required to note specific items on his report and although the determination of value may be adequate for the sale, once the final underwriter reviews this document – it is a good possibility that they will require documentation that the furnace is in working order and that any asbestos be removed or contained before they will issue a mortgage commitment. Now comes the fun part, especially when dealing with asbestos. This permitted process is not cheap or quick to resolve and can not only delay the closing significantly but can also cause the sale to fall apart. It is best to be one step ahead of any potential problems and to take care of them long before it becomes a real headache. It will save you time and money in the long run. Helen Hemendinger Honored with PTA Founders’ Day Award The Hoosick Falls Central School PTA annually seeks nominations to honor community members who make outstanding contributions to the well-being of children and youth. This year’s award recipient was Helen Hemendinger, who has taught second grade math at Hoosick Falls Central School for 23 years. Mrs. Hemendinger was honored at the PTA’s year-end celebration on June 7. In addition to her recognition as someone who makes a difference in our community, Mrs. Hemendinger was awarded $100 to give to a children’s association/organization of her choice. Mrs. Hemendinger chose her award to go to the Courtney Corelli Foundation for Literacy. Mrs. Hemendinger was nominated by Traci Friel, a sixthgrade teacher at HFCS, and who was once a student under Mrs. Hemendinger. “She was my sec-

ond grade teacher, and through her guidance and care, inspired me to become the teacher that I am today,” said Mrs. Friel. “She is always in search of a new way to help students, a new way to practice math, explore mathematics, always in search of ways to share her love of learning with students.” Mrs. Hemendinger will be retiring at the end of the school year. The PTA Founders’ Day (February 17, 1897) is the story of a group of lay people, a few thousand at first, now millions throughout the land, who make it their task to build a world of happy promise for children. In observing Founders’ Day, members pay tribute to the founders and to other PTA leaders. Recipients of this award are recognized as people who carry on that “happy promise for children.” Past recipients of this PTA

Cricket is Descending Upon Bennington! Once upon a time, in a colony not so far away, the British Empire ruled with an iron fist, a raised finger and a very flat bat. It took a group of rebel fighters and a peculiar new game called “baseball” to chase the Imperials off our shores and back from whence they came. Magdalena’s Kittens

Baxter, featured in the photo attached, is not just a beautiful 8-weekold male black long hair kitten but more important, he’s a charming little guy who loves to cuddle. This tiny fellow can steal anyone’s heart. Baxter was found in Hoosick Falls, the only kitten of a feral mother. His Mom was spayed, vaccinated and released by Francis of Assisi Society for Companion Animals. The caring family that found both Baxter and his mom will continue to care for the Mom to insure that she has a happy, healthy life. Baxter is waiting for a loving home where he can continue to grow to become a handsome charming adult cat. Francis of Assisi also has three more black long hair kittens for adoption. Nicole is also 8 weeks old and Alexandra and Marguerite are both 11 week old sisters. All of them were abandoned, all came from feral mothers, all are gorgeous and gentle, and most of all, all of them are looking for love. Stephentown Library Book Sale

The Stephentown Memorial Library is holding their annual Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, July 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rain date is July 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Plenty of summer reading: hardcovers (good condition used and barely used), large print, paperbacks, other media, lots of children’s books. In addition to the book sale, you will enjoy a tag sale, baked goods, locally prepared refreshments, live musical entertainment with Terri Roben, a craft sale offered by local artisans, kid’s activities, a Chinese auction and much more! Interim Rector

The Reverend L. Paul Gratz will be the Interim Rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Bennington. Father Gratz will serve in this interim position until a new rector is called by the Vestry of St. Peter’s. Father Gratz brings with him a wealth of experience from serving as an Interim in ten different parishes in Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and North Carolina. More recently he has served as Interim with the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont in the Slate Valley Regional Ministry. Father Gratz received his Master of Divinity degree in 1971 from the Episcopal Theological School (now the Episcopal Divinity School) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He also holds a MA in Theater Arts from the West Virginia University, Morgantown, 1976. He is a 1968 graduate of Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania. Father Gratz was ordained to the transitional deaconate in 1971 and priest in 1972 in Fairlee, Vermont. An interesting fact about Father Paul is that he worked as a carpenter on two movies of the sci-fi director George “Night of the Living Dead” Romero, “Monkey Shines” (1988) and “Two Evil Eyes” (1990). He was a dual career worker priest who taught technical theater courses at several small liberal arts colleges such as Sweet Briar College in Virginia. Father Paul is trained and certified in Interim Ministry and has done work in Spiritual Direction at the Shalem Institute. The Reverend Gratz and his wife Susan will reside in the Bennington area. Reverend Gratz will begin his interim ministry July 1, 2010. Chesterﬁeld Historical Society

This year the Chesterfield Historical Society will have photos and artifacts on display concentrating on specific areas and businesses of the past in the valley next to the east branch of the Westfield River. This Fourth of July event will take place at the Chesterfield town all from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Historical Society will offer pie and ice cream, children’s doll tables, chairs, bird houses, feeders and more. Also for sale will be Chesterfield post cards and historical publications. 14
