— by Susan J. Coons ...give the guy a break... President Obama, as we all know, inherited a terrible mess. This country was heavily involved in two wars, Wall Street was collapsing, unemployment was skyrocketing, banks were folding, and health care was in crisis. Even before he took the oath of office, Obama was working with then President George W. Bush to stop a catastrophic crash of Wall Street and pull national banks out of bankruptcy. I don’t know when he sleeps! He devours a mass of information daily to stay on top of all situations around the world; takes phone calls; has meetings; confronts crisis after crisis; meets with legislators on both sides of the aisle; manages to be a father and husband; meets with government officials around the United States and globally, and much more. Some of the President’s critics are complaining that the President takes too many vacation days. They have to be kidding! In his first year as President, Obama took 26 vacation days, while former President Bush took 69 days of vacation in his first year. President Obama visited Camp David, Maryland 11 times in his first year for a total of 27 days (less than 2.5 days per visit) with Bush in his first year visiting Camp David, Maryland 25 times for a total of 78 days (slightly over 3 days per visit). The pundits are mumbling about the fact that Obama attended a 90minute White House concert where Paul McCartney celebrated winning the Gershwin Prize. They don’t think it was appropriate when we are facing the tragic oil crisis in the Gulf. Our President is everywhere! How can they chastise him for spending an evening at home? He lives at the White House and he had company! Give the guy a break! Throughout his presidency, George Bush spent 490 days at his Crawford, Texas ranch and 487 days at Camp David, Maryland for a total of 977 days of vacation meaning that he took 2 and 2/3 years of vacation while president for eight years. These figures are from various sources on the Internet, so I can’t swear my life on them, but I’m sure they’re close enough to the truth. I know that I’ll hear from a few readers who will disagree with me. But, the picture is clear: President Obama is very, very busy cleaning up the mess he was left and trying to get our country moving forward. He confronts every crisis facing him by reaching out to the most knowledgeable people for information and discussion. He’s working all day long, and I have to wonder if he ever sleeps. For crying out loud, give the guy a break! Susanism: Remember to share your beautiful smile! You can read From My Corner and make comments on the Web at www.tspennysaver.com.

School of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Present ‘Godspell, Jr.’
“Godspell Jr.” is coming to the stage at The School of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales. On June 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s multipurpose room, the middle school students will perform a version of one of the most successful musicals in theatre history. Directed by David Estes, principal, the 1970s musical draws on the scriptural teachings as told in the Book of Matthew. Using various theatrical traditions such as clowning, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, Godspell transforms the stories and language of the bible into simple, everyday situations and speech. “The over-riding theme of ‘Godspell’ is that of the formation of a community with a sense of responsibility out of a disparate group of individuals.” Led by Jesus, played by seventh grader Jessie Kuzmicki and John the Baptist, played by seventh grader Sarah Solari, “Godspell, Jr.” covers familiar bible stories with song and dance. The audience will witness the baptism of the players and Jesus, the stories of forgiving debts, God as a merciful judge, the Good Samaritan, and others. They will hear familiar tunes: “Day By Day,” “Learn Your Lesson Well” and “O Bless the Lord, My Soul” among many others. Each song and parable promises to deliver a valuable life lesson. Sponsored by The Bennington Pizza House, show time is 7:30 p.m. on June 10 and 11. Tickets are $5 at the door at The School of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales. Contact the school at 802-442-2446 for additional information. _________________________________________________

Bennington County Choral Society Presents Program
The Bennington County Choral Society will present “Every Time I Feel the Spirit; Spirituals from the African-American Tradition” on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20. The program will include a large assortment of well-loved as well as less familiar spirituals. Several members of the society will be featured in solo sections. Music Director Edwin Lawrence will conduct. Scott Smedinghoff will accompany at the piano. The body of black spirituals is one of the largest and most varied collections of folk-music in the United States. Beginning in the 18th century, commentators noticed the singing in fields and in churches of Africans brought for the slave trade. By the early 19th century, a period of religious fervor for both white and black communities in the South, the songs that have come down to us began to appear. The songs embodied certain African characteristics, such as call and response; short, repetitive refrains; improvisatory interjections; and a basic group or choral style with a strong physical sense of rhythm. These features combined with the vivid language of Christian music of the period. The Spirituals frequently tell Biblical stories or delight in imagining an idealized heaven. Often imbued with deep emotion, the songs, like “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” bemoan our earthly condition, while looking forward to a Heavenly reward. Songs like “There is a Balm in Gilead” find reassurance directly in the scriptural text. Some authorities find code-words in the texts of the spirituals, noting that the “promised land,” for instance, may allude to escape to the North. From the earliest days of Spiritual singing, writers commented on the special celebratory songs that featured movement, as in “Ain’-a That Good News,” or the title song of the concert, “Every Time I Feel the Spirit.” Beginning just after the American Civil War, the singing of the Southern Black tradition began to reach a wider audience. The “Jubilee Singers” from Fisk University toured widely in the U. S. and in Europe, beginning in 1871, winning audiences for their repertoire and singing style. By the turn of the century, talented African-American composers such as Harry T. Burleigh began embracing the music. His arrangements of “My Lord, What a Mornin’” and “O Lord Have Mercy on Me” are included in the choral society’s concert. Later generations of composers continued Burleigh’s passion for this music, and added to the repertoire loved by choirs and audiences alike: William Dawson, from the Tuskegee Institute, and more recently, Moses Hogan, whose arrangement of “The Battle of Jericho” will be featured. In the 1960s, the Robert Shaw Chorale created wonderful arrangements, including “I Got Shoes,” from the hand of Alice Parker, still active and living in nearby Massachusetts. Still newer arrangements have come to us from the pen of Robert DeCormier, now a resident of Southern Vermont, and the founding director of the Chorus of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. His arrangements include the lovely, “Lily of the Valley,” and the lively “Let Me Fly.” “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” will be performed at Second Congregational Church, Hillside Street, Bennington on Saturday, June 19 at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, June 20 at 3 p.m. The space is handicappedaccessible. Tickets, at $10 each are available at the door, or in advance at Bennington Book Shop, the South Street Café, or from any Choral Society member. June 9, 2010

Relay for Life!
This year marks the 26th anniversay of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life! Each year our team participates, as well as many others, and “hits the track” at Mount Anthony Union High School for a night of remembrance and fraternity as we raise monies to help find a cure. For each $5 donated, a luminary with your loved one’s name can light the track at night, burning with hope and love, especially the hope for a cure. If anyone has not had the opportunity to donate, and wishes to purchase luminaries, please contact Terri Burdick at 518-686-7851 before June 11. All monies received are tax-deductible.
St. Mary’s Academy Raises Funds For Haiti
In response to the Haitian earthquake, St. Mary’s eighth graders organized a school-wide penny drive to raise money for the Doctors Without Borders effort in Haiti. To encourage participation, the eighth graders established a competition among grades K-8. Each penny collected equaled one point; however, each nickel, dime and quarter collected reduced each classroom’s total points by five, ten and twentyfive points respectively. The class with the highest net points earned an ice cream party courtesy of the eighth graders. This twist encouraged students to not only bring in many pennies for their classroom but also encouraged students to deposit silver coins in other classrooms. The results were fantastic! St. Mary’s raised a total of $863.80. In addition, second grade earned the highest net points and enjoyed an ice cream sundae party provided by the eighth graders. St. Mary’s students responded tremendously to a worthy service project initiated by the eighth graders. ________________________________________________

If you are looking for a cat that would be a good family pet Tehvi may be the right cat for you. Jasmine is a two year old Border Collie-Akita mix who came to Second Chance because many changes in family life were too much for her to handle. Originally adopted from a New York State shelter, Jasmine was extremely loved and well cared for. Shy at first, Jasmine needs to slowly and gradually warm up to new people and situations. She has a particularly hard time with strangers and should never be the greeter at the front door. She can be aloof, timid and fearful, but these are traits that can subside with extensive socialization in the adoptive home. Continued crate training, very extensive socialization and reinforcement of known obedience would be extremely helpful for Jasmine to be the best dog that she can become. We recommend a quiet and understanding, adult only home, preferably with a doggy-sibling to help Jasmine increase her confidence. If you are looking to give a needy girl just what she needs and deserves, then come and meet our blossom, Jasmine! These pets and others are available at Second Chance Animal Center, Route 7A, Shaftsbury, Vermont. For information, call 802-375-2898.
Kitten Update
The Francis of Assisi Society for Companion Animals, who has this family of kittens available, announces that two of the male kittens have been adopted. These kittens are 10 weeks old and have their mother’s gentle and sweet disposition. The mother was spayed after the kittens were weaned and remains with her owner/family. Anyone interested in adoption may call 802-236-9123. June 9, 2010
