Lake Paran Bluegrass Festival

Cambridge Historical Society to Host Program

Bennington Rotary Scholarship Awards

On Wednesday, July 21, at 7:00 p.m., the Cambridge Historical Society and Museum will present the second in a series of summer programs: “Letters From a Country Torn by Revolution.” Park Ranger Jennifer Richard-Morrow will read from letters of 18th century women written to their friends and family giving poignant insights into the pivotal times that defined our country. Dressed in period attire, Ms. Morrow will read from letters and journals written during the war period with a focus on events which occurred in New York. These personal accounts reveal the innermost thoughts and emotions about the war, fought not in a far-off land but at the very doorsteps of Americans, loyalist and patriots alike. The museum is located on Broad Street just down from the Cambridge Hotel and will be open for tours at 6:00 p.m. prior to the presentation. St. Mary’s Academy to Hold Annual Golf Scramble at HFCC

On Friday, August 6, St. Mary’s Academy will host their tenth Annual SMA Golf Scramble at the Hoosick Falls Country Club on Richmond Avenue in Hoosick Falls. The tournament will be a scramble format with teams consisting of four players. Teams can have their choice of an 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. tee-time with a shotgun start. Lunch will be available between noon and 3 p.m. as well as a potluck dinner following play. Prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin and best team score. Area businesses, individuals and organizations are invited to sponsor a hole. The cost to sponsor a hole is $100. Sponsors will receive signage on the course and in the Clubhouse acknowledging their support. Cost to play is $70 per person which includes cart, greens fees for 18 holes, lunch and dinner. Spectators are welcome and may join us for lunch and dinner for $10. Business sponsors who enter a team to play and sponsor a hole will receive a discount. At a recent meeting of the Bennington Rotary Club, Patricia Michael, Chair of the Scholarship Committee presented Rotary Scholarship Awards to the following students: Caleb Cristofolini who graduated from McCann Technical High School and who will attend Vermont Technical College. His field of interest is computer engineering; Christopher Riley Moyer is a MAUHS graduate, who will attend SUNY Delhi to study Veterinary Science Technology with the goal of pursuing a veterinary medicine degree following undergraduate college; Jeffrey James Thibodeau, a MAUHS graduate who will attend Tufts University to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering with special interests in optics and ophthalmology and cell and tissue engineering. Other scholarship winners who were not present are: James Christopher Caswell attending the University of Vermont; Hannah Leslie Cross going to Utica College; Megan Prazak Pini going to Skidmore College; and Miles M. Selib attending George Washington University. In addition, Miles Selib received the Sal Santarcangelo Award given in memory of the late Salvatore Santarcangelo to the student who most exemplifies Senator Santarcangelo’s example of volunteerism, leadership and service to the community. ________________________________________________

...my sister’s visit... Today is Tuesday, July 13. My sister and her friend boarded a plane to return to Lompoc, California this morning at 6 a.m. We were up at 3 and left the house at 4. Our final hugs and good-byes ended two weeks of silly fun and laughter peppered with a little bit of arguing! “Oh, yeah!” and “Who says so!” My sister and her friend spent the Fourth of July weekend in Boston, Massachusetts. They traipsed around historic sites and trails and attended the Boston Pops Fourth of July Extravaganza that climaxed with an exciting display of fireworks. The weekend was long, hot and humid but they enjoyed every minute of it. Linda’s friend, Mary, loves to shop and browse, so we thought she would enjoy Camelot Village in Bennington. One can get lost in there because it rambles upstairs, downstairs and goes on forever! Knowing

that we would never be able to find Mary, we went outside to sip a root beer and wait for her. After about 20 minutes, we called her on her cell phone and said we were leaving in five minutes! That was the only way we could get her out of the store! We went to Kevin’s Sports Pub in North Bennington the first Friday they were here. Kevin’s special that night was one of our favorites, sauerbraten! OMG! It was so delicious! I know the work involved in making good sauerbraten with potato pancakes. That’s why I only make it when I’m having guests in for dinner, and then only rarely! ...switch and twitch... I’ve shared stories about my Grandma with you in the past. I was thinking of another one this morning on the way in to work today (Monday, July 19). Women have probably been unhappy with their bodies since mankind climbed down out of trees and set up housekeeping in caves. If you watch old movies from silents to 1930s and 40s, you will see various devices created to help women get themselves into “shape.” My Grandma, who was a little overweight, but always looked good and was a sharp dresser, had energy to spare and so decided to sell, in her spare time, an electric body-trimming-shaping machine. She invited ladies into our living room in the evening about once a week. I helped her set up the demonstration. I was about 11 or 12 at the time and I thought it was so much fun! First I opened the portable table on which the “victim” (my word as a kid) would sit for the demonstration. Then grandma would open the suitcase loaded with wires and switches. Each wire had a little white tab at the end which was placed on the person’s body (flabby arms and legs; triple chins etc.). After all the tabs were affixed, grandma would flip the various switches. The flesh of the “victim” would twitch caused by the electrical snap to every area where the wires were attached. It was very funny to watch. I tried it myself one time just for fun! I don’t know how many of these kits she sold. I don’t think it was too popular because she started selling jewelry at house parties a short time later. The Pittsfield, Massachusetts Department of Community Development Parks & Recreation Program has announced that lifeguards will be on duty at the public beach within Burbank Park as of last Friday. Lifeguards will provide beach supervision from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays through August 22. It’s fair time! Yes, summer is here, the weather is balmy, the gardens are blooming, it’s vacation time and time for the 36th Adams Agricultural Fair, Route 8, Bowe Field in Adams, Massachusetts. Crafters, Artisans Wanted

The 213th Bondville Fair will be held on Friday, August 27, Saturday, August 28, and Sunday, August 29. It is the oldest continuously operating fair in Vermont. It is known for being a real family affair with booths for artisans and crafters, as well as for sponsoring horse and tractor pulls, pony rides, live animals, a kiddie tractor pull, pie eating contests, entertainment, and many other fun and interesting activities. There is also a great quilt exhibit and, in the Fair’s Floral Hall, local children, artisans and crafters can display their talents in crocheting, knitting, jams and jellies, baked goods, farm and garden produce, art work and floral displays just to name a few of the types of items which are judged for prizes. At this time, the Fair’s Arts and Crafts Coordinator is looking for quality crafters and artisans to display and sell their original works — no manufacrued items are allowed. Each crafter or artisan must provide their own booth (or tent), tables and chairs. This is a rain or shine event. For the three days of the fair, organizers will supply a 10-foot by 10-foot space for a fee of $75. Electricity can be had for an additional $10. Summer Tour of ‘Taming of the Shrew’

The Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall (TCHH) has announced dates and locations for its upcoming summer tour of “The Taming of the Shrew,” Shakespeare’s definitive comedic take on the battle of the sexes. Public performances will be given at area parks and historic venues, July 17 – July 25. All performances begin at 7 p.m. and are free to all. Brian Foley (TCHH, “The Good Doctor,” director; “He Who Gets Slapped,” actor) will direct a cast led by Michael Broadhurst and Rocky Freidman Vargas as Petruchio and Katherine, Shakespeare’s classic romantic protagonists. Performances of “The Taming of the Shrew” will be given at: the Greenwich Commons (Greenwich, New York) on Tuesday, July 20; Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, New York) on Wednesday, July 21; Hildene (Manchester, Vermont), on Thursday, July 22; Salem Arts Works (Salem, New York) on Friday, July 23; Wood Memorial Park, (Hoosick Falls, New York) on Saturday, July 24; and the Cambridge Guest House (Cambridge, New York) on Sunday, July 25. Bennington Garden Club Presents Talk by Page Dickey The Bennington Garden Club will present a talk by noted garden writer, lecturer and designer Page Dickey on August 4 at 1 p.m., at the Arkell Pavilion of the Southern Vermont Arts Center. The subject of her talk will be “Revisiting Duck Hill — A Gardener’s Garden Evolves.” Duck Hill is the 19th century farmhouse that Dickey and her husband own in North Salem, New York, where they live surrounded by an assortment of dogs, cats and chickens, as well as fanciful gardens. She described the world of garden rooms that she created around it in her 1991 book “Duck Hill Journal: A Year in a Country Garden.” Since then she has become well known as the author of many books and articles about gardening, as a lecturer on garden design, and as a teacher at the New York Botanical Garden and the Horticultural Society of New York. She also has written about garden design for House

Beautiful, House and Garden, and Elle Decor. In addition to her 1991 book, she is the author of “Gardens in the Spirit of Place,” the award winning “Breaking Ground: Portraits of Ten Garden Designers,” and “Dogs in Their Gardens,” “Cats in Their Gardens,” and other works. She also was the co-founder of the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program, which began in 1995 with 110 gardens, most of them in Westchester County, New York and nearby parts of Connecticut being opened to the public. Last year, more than 300 gardens in 23 states and the District of Columbia took part in what has become a nation-wide program. The Southern Vermont Arts Center is located on West Road in Manchester. There will be an admission fee of $10. Refreshments will be served after the lecture, and Ms. Dickey will have books available for sale.

Mystery Writer Kenneth Wishnia to Hold Book Signing Mystery lovers will have the opportunity to hear author Kenneth Wishnia talk about his work on Wednesday, July 21 at 7 p.m. at the Mount Anthony Country Club. Wishnia’s most recent book, “The Fifth Servant,” is a fascinating mystery set in 16th century Prague. On the eve of Passover in 1592, a young Christian girl is found murdered in a Jewish shop. The rabbi’s new sexton is given three days by the Jewish authorities to find the murderer. “The Fifth Servant” will be on sale that evening and the author will be available to autograph copies. Wishnia has previously written a series of mysteries about Filomena Buscarsela, an Ecuadoran ex-NYPD cop. The first of these, “23 Shades

of Black,” was nominated for the Edgar and the Anthony Awards and made Booklist’s Best First Mystery list, and was followed by four other novels, including “Soft Money,” which Library Journal listed as one of the Best Mysteries of the Year, and “Red House,” which was a Washington Post Book World Rave Book of the Year in 2002. His short stories have appeared in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, Murder in Vegas, Queens Noir, and elsewhere. Wishnia teaches writing and literature at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, Long Island, New York, where he is an Associate Professor of English.

This month two of Olitski’s quilts are being raffled with the proceeds slated to provide yet another benefit – financial support for the Bennington Honor Roll project at the Vermont Veteran’s Home. Olitski is a former dress designer who once dressed Janice Joplin for concerts but changed direction in recent years. She is the widow of Jules Olitski, a well-known artist and professor at Bennington College in the 1960s. Though Mrs. Olitski has never lived

in Bennington, she maintains a connection through her husband’s many friends in the area. Sophia Healy of North Bennington is the conduit through which Olitski’s healing quilts are distributed in Bennington. Healy donated two quilts to the Southern Vermont Liberty Council, which is holding the raffle to benefit the Bennington Honor Roll. Lanterns of Remembrance at Lake Lauderdale

On Wednesday evening, August 4, candle lanterns will set sail on Lake Lauderdale, New York, as a memorial to lives lost to armed conflict. Lanterns of Remembrance at Lake Lauderdale began in the 1980s, when Cold War tensions kept images of nuclear war’s devastation sharply focused. The lantern float became a way of strengthening efforts for peace by honoring war’s victims. Each year’s observance continues to serve this purpose, as community members join the Battenkill Peacemakers in making and floating candle lanterns. The evening begins at 6 p.m. at Washington County Park picnic shelter, where participants bring dishes to share in a potluck supper and where materials for lantern making are provided. (To help “keep green”, diners are encouraged to bring their table service and to separate waste as labels direct.) The program that follows will include group singing, special music, and readings. Members of the Mettawee River Theatre Company with flutist Bliss McIntosh will lead the lantern launch processional to the lake at dusk. In case of rain, an observance will be held in the picnic shelter. Washington County Park at Lake Lauderdale is north of Cambridge, New York, on State Route 22. Clark Art Offers Drop-In Drawing Workshops

Outdoor Movies of Mystery at the Bennington Museum

Enjoy your favorite mystery/suspense movies outdoors at the Bennington Museum throughout our summer Season of Mystery. The films, which will begin at dusk, will top off your visit to the museum. Sit and relax with a snack and beverage as you enjoy a classic Hollywood film on a warm and balmy summer evening in the Shires of Vermont. Remember to bring a chair or blanket on which to sit comfortably. “Bunny Lake is Missing,” screening on July 23, and starring Keir Dullea, Carol Lynley, Lucie Mannheim is a 1967 black and white film released by Columbia Pictures and directed by Otto Preminger. Bunny Lake’s disappearance is one of the most eerie cases police in England have encountered. When Ann Lake (Carol Lynley) reports that her daughter is missing, police can’t find evidence that Bunny ever existed. The third screening is the film, “The List of Adrian Messenger.” This 1963 black and white Universal Pictures release was directed by John Huston and stars Tony Curtis, Kirk Douglas, and Burt Lancaster. The film will be shown the evening of July 30. In this story, Messenger asks a friend to check into a list of names before leaving on a trip. When his plane is blown out of the sky, the matter becomes more serious. As his friend checks into the list, each seems to have died in mysterious circumstances. As he goes down the list, the deaths become more recent and a race to find the remaining survivors and what put each of them on this list ensues. _________________________________________________

Is There a ‘Bermuda Triangle’ in Bennington?

Is there a “Bermuda Triangle” right next to Bennington? A place where people just disappear? Well if there isn’t, then where did all the missing people go? Most local folks have heard of Paula Welden but there were others. In early December of 1947, eighteen year old Bennington College student Paula Welden hitched a ride from the entrance of Bennington College in North Bennington to a location on Route 9 between downtown Bennington and Woodford Hollow. She was last seen walking along the Long Trail toward Mt. Glastenbury. There is speculation that she was going to meet someone on the Long Trail because she was not dressed properly considering the cold December weather. There have been four other vanishings in the same area between 1942 and 1950. It was Vermont broadcaster and author Joesph A. Citro who dubbed this Long Trail area northeast of Bennington as “the Bennington Triangle.” Come and here about these people and maybe you can help solve the mysteries. Ted Bird, local history buff will discuss these unsolved Bennington Mysteries in a talk in the Paresky Room of the Bennington Museum at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday July 25. There will also be a repeat presentation at the same time and place on Sunday, August 22. Both presentations are sponsored by the Bennington Historical Society, and they are given as part of Bennington’s Season of Mystery.

Saturday, July 24 is the date for Habitat for Humanity’s auction and tag sale at A Safe Place Self Storage, four miles north of Manchester, Vermont off Route 7A at 275 Tennis Way in East Dorset, Vermont in the Hills Industrial Park. Parking will be at Pad Print Machinery, with handicapped parking at A Safe Place Self Storage (Do not park along Tennis Way). Money raised by the auction will help Habitat build these new homes and renovate existing homes in Bennington County for low-income families in need of safe, affordable housing. Bennington Area Habitat homes are affordable to low-income families because they are almost entirely built by volunteers, there is no profit in the sale price, and no interest is charged on the mortgage. Robert Ebert Speaks to Bennington Rotary

Robert emphasized that no matter what skills or material resources a fire company had, the crucial factor was the way in which people were treated. Hammer Time Campers Build Mississippi Paddleboats

Recently, 20 area children enjoyed the first installment of the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition 2010 Summer Camp Series in Hoosick, New York. During “Hammer Time,” participants learned about using tools and planning projects, all while building their own paddleboats. The camp series continues every other week throughout the summer. Kittens Abandoned

Maurice and Bebe were found inside a car near Mount Anthony Union High School. A neighbor had left the window of his car open and the mother cat thought she had found a great place to protect the newborns from the elements. She did not realize the danger in leaving her babies inside the car. Naturally the owner of the car needed the vehicle. The kittens were taken to the volunteers of Francis of Assisi Society for Companion Animals. They have received much needed love and tender care and are now eight weeks old. We are looking for a very loving family that will give them a permanent home. Our organization also has nine more tiny kittens all of which have been abandoned in various locations in Bennington. If you are thinking of getting a kitten, this will be a great opportunity. They have been tested and vaccinated, so not only are they adorable but they are quite healthy as well.
