The Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall (TCHH) announces Shakespeare’s hallmark summer comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, as its tenth annual free Shakespeare touring production to area parks and historical sites in upstate New York and southern Vermont. The live outdoor production, directed by TCHH artistic director Kevin McGuire, will tour the region

Bennington, VT; Wednesday, July 29, Georgi Museum, Shushan NY; and Thursday, July 30, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” revolves around the adventures of four young lovers, a group of amateur actors and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest. The story takes place in Midsummer and is a bewitching farce featuring Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius. Their romantic intrigues are confused and complicated still further by entering the forest where Oberon, the King of the Fairies and his Queen, Titania, preside. Puck is a major character who is full of mischief and tricks. Other visitors to the enchanted forest include Bottom the weaver and his friends Snug, Snout, Quince and Flute, the amateur dramatists who want to rehearse their terrible but hilarious version of the play, Pyramus and Thisbe.

Susan Coons’ July 8 by-line was not only enjoyable but familiar as well. She discussed the problems she encountered while trying to communicate by phone with a Sirius Radio representative Her call, as are most, was routed to their customer service desk in India. I have no problem with the people of India, their culture or language, but it is often frustrating trying to communicate by phone. I have experienced the same problem with the Dell Computer service people. Sometimes they get the order right and sometimes they don’t, which only adds to the frustration. I found a solution to this problem. One must ask for (demand) their U.S. office phone number. They do exist. Using that number, you get to speak with a real, live American with whom it is quite easy to communicate. Somehow it is so much more satisfying being able to speak with some jolly soul in Alabama rather than someone in New Delhi. Army National Guard Pvt. Jimmy R. Jimenez has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, OK. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics. Free Dinner in Cambridge

PAVE Announces Winner of Chocolate Festival People’s Choice Award

David Ingison, Chef/Owner of the South Side Café in Arlington, is the winner of Project Against Violent Encounters’ (PAVE) annual Chocolate Festival People’s Choice Award for his Chocolate Covered Bacon with Toasted Almonds. Though he admits the idea for this seemingly strange combination of chocolate and bacon was not his own, he only perfected the dessert after a good deal of experimentation. The key, he said, was learning how “to cook the bacon just right.” His dessert was the buzz of the evening. Congratulations, David. The people have spoken. PAVE provides comprehensive services to women, men and children affected by domestic and sexual violence within Bennington County. Open Mike in Stephentown

The next monthly Stephentown Open Mike will be held Sunday, July 26, in the meeting room at the newly enlarged Stephentown Memorial Library. Come and share your talents with your neighbors, or just come and enjoy the talents of your neighbors. We showcase our town’s folksingers, our country and classical musicians, our poets and our songwriters, and get our community singing together. All ages are welcome. Berkshire Artists Exhibits Works in Old Chatham, NY

Berkshire artist, Marguerite Bride will exhibit her watercolors at the Old Chatham Country Store during the month of August. ‘Comic and Cartoon Art Comes Alive’

Berkshire Bank Foundation recently awarded a grant to the Storefront Artist Project to fund its “Comic and Cartoon Art Comes Alive” free kid-centric, family-friendly education programming this summer. The “Comic and Cartoon Art Comes Alive” is an educational outreach program that brings a series of related events and workshops focused on comic and cartoon art for children and families. The program offers workshops and programs free of charge and takes place during the “Art of Scott Hanna” exhibit on view August 1 – 30, at the Storefront Artist Project. Peter Lafayette, Executive Director of Berkshire Bank Foundation said, “Berkshire Bank is pleased to help bring this comic and cartoon art form to Pittsfield as it fits in nicely with our focus on education. We all grew up with comic books and it’s great to learn about the art and artists who have made them possible over the years.” Pittsfield’s Storefront Artist Project is presenting the “Art of Scott Hanna” this summer as part of its Comic Book and Cartoon �� Art Series that was so popular �� in 2008. Hanna is a well-known graphic novel and comic book �� illustrator, and his work on �� Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Robin, �� and others will be highlighted in �� the exhibition. —Susan J. Coons ...wages and retirement... Someone I know in California worked several years after retirement for H&R Block in the spring doing income taxes. She was always fortunate enough to have well-paying employment before she took early retirement. She was vested in the company she worked for and receives a tidy monthly pension. Fifteen years ago she won $100,000 in a lottery, and invested the money wisely in stock and a little real estate. She lives comfortably, occasionally taking overseas trips, and can pretty much pick up and go when she and her husband feel like they want to get outta Dodge. She calls me every other week or so during the spring, telling me how unfair the tax system has become. People on welfare, and with no income actually receiving refunds! She’s a flat, across the board tax proponent. I tried to explain to her that 10 percent of $1000 is a greater expense to someone with a low income than $10,000 is to someone with an income of $100,000. She disagrees with me, and perhaps many of you as well. I was thinking about this today on my way in to work. Long ride and lots of time to think. As you are probably aware, California is in a very deep financial crisis. This really aggravates my friend. I can understand. Arnold is paying state employees with IOUs. Try paying your phone bill with an IOU. Last Sunday she let me know what she thinks of teachers, who earn, in her mind, ridiculously high salaries. They attend paid seminars, have two months off during the summer, and most of them do a lousy job of teaching! She’s angry because, she insists, they receive their full pay for the rest of their life upon retirement. And it’s coming out of her tax dollars! Well, I don’t know one teacher who has that kind of ‘perk’. Sure, there are lazy teachers; ineffective teachers; teachers who yell and scream (my daughter had one of those!); burnt out teachers...but I’d say that 86 percent of the teachers who have our children in their hands are sincere, caring, educated, and willing to continue to improve their education in order to help their students. They put in long hours on weekends and week nights. They take difficult mandated classes during the school year to maintain their certification, some in more than one state, and have that homework piled on as well. They often give up their two-month “vacation” to work at a summer job, sometimes to pay for their own education, or take more classes. If they’re conscienscious, they’re concerned about the well-being of their students and put extra effort into helping those who may have learning difficulties or suffer from emotional disturbances. For some students, the teacher is the only constant in their lives. These teachers often make purchases for students whose parents have nothing; they pay for less fortunate students on field trips; they buy school supplies when there are none; they buy books when there are none. If good teachers did receive their full salary for the rest of their lives, I’d say “Great!” They deserve it! But I think we should re-think what we pay congressmen and senators upon retirement! It’s the kind of money you and I will never see unless we win the lottery! July 22, 2009

Main Street Stage Offers Workshops

Main Street Stage, in conjunction with Creatively Independent, will be offering two workshops Monday, August 3 and Tuesday, August 4 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Each workshop is $40. The first workshop will be stage combat, unarmed violence for stage and screen, slaps, punches, kicks and more taught with the “safety first” technique used on stage and screen. Get on your feet and learn the illusion of violence and how to stage it in your next show. Participants will learn the primary safety aspects of combat and the core unarmed moves they will most likely come across in their scene work: identifying when combat is needed and how to be smart, safe actors when dealing with violence. Plus, the physical ensemble work will promote team building, listening skills and a heightened awareness of one’s surroundings. All skill levels and body types welcome. The second workshop is physical comedy — extreme actor/audience techniques. Let them laugh at you...it’s your job! Learn a hybrid of straight comic acting, physical comedy and quick witted improv to engage and mesmerize your audience. Tune up your own comedic timing and inject that into your character work. Find out the magic of repetition, how to make the simple hilariously difficult, and much more. Participants will develop a stronger sense of the clown in their character work and how to incorporate the audience in everything they do. Focus is also put on being vulnerable in front of an audience and reaping the benefits from the honesty in your comic work. All skill levels welcome. The instructor, Christopher Beaulieu, is an actor/director/fight choreographer/teacher with over 15 years experience teaching and directing students in various areas of theater. Co-founder of the physical theatre company, Creatively Independent, LLC, Chris tours 250+ days/year performing and teaching the performing arts. He has taught internationally in Germany and Canada, as well as nationally. Chris has founded theater companies in Massachusetts and Germany. He has trained and taught with the internationally recognized Shakespeare and Company education program. Chris is an accredited Advanced Actor/Combatant in 7 weapons with the Society of American Fight Directors. Chris teaches at multiple conferences: Florida State Thespians, North Carolina State Thespians, Florida Association of Theatre Educators and the prestigious Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (SE Region), as well as clown/performance skills under the Big Top for Circus Smirkus, a well established youth based circus school. Recently, Chris was assistant director to Dell’Arte’s Artistic Director, Michael Fields on the original production of “The Hunting of the Snark.” Chris is happy to announce his recent invitation to join the select list of teaching artists working for ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association). The Primate Fiasco to Perform Free Outdoor Concert at The Clark

The Primate Fiasco is a self-described “psychedelic Dixieland” band from Northampton, MA. Catch this exciting group on Tuesday, July 28, at 6 p.m., during the final outdoor concert at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. The concert is free and held on the Clark’s expansive south lawn (picnics, blankets, and lawn chairs encouraged). The Clark’s Café will sell barbecue fare and the galleries will remain open until 6 p.m. on this evening. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the auditorium. Concert admission is free. The quintet features Nick Borges on trumpet, Dave DelloRusso on banjo and harp, Steve Yarbro on saxophone and clarinet, Tim Bouchet on tuba, and Chris Trevethan on drums. While the band members do perform traditional Dixieland jazz, they frequently use their traditional instruments to produce music that is often recognized as funk, reggae, bluegrass, hip hop, rock, latin, or even trance, however, the band members are hesitant to label their music, and instead simply call it “music to have fun to.” Concertgoers will enjoy the Primate Fiasco’s entertaining antics. Dance contests and audience participation rule their family-friendly performances. Their unique sound attracts audiences of all ages and demographics. With influences as diverse as The Beatles, John Coltrane, and Sublime, their Clark performance is sure to offer something for everyone. This series is supported in part by Williamstown Savings Bank. Ben is a 1 year old Hound Mix who was brought to SCAC because his owner was moving and could not keep him. Ben is an affectionate, sweet natured boy who needs lots of reassurance. When playing with other dogs, his confidence builds and he becomes a very outgoing, happy pup. When introduced to new people however, he is very shy. Summer Basketball in the Berkshires!

The 17th Annual Susan G. Komen Vermont-New Hampshire Race for the Cure® takes place Sunday, July 26, at Hildene Meadows in Manchester, VT. You may register for the race online at www.vtnhkomen.org — you may volunteer to help while you register, if you’d like — or in person at the race site on River Road from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, and from 7 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Race Day, Sunday the 26th. Part race, part festival, part rally and all heart, the race is a 5K run or walk to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and breast cancer research and outreach programs in Vermont and New Hampshire. A must-do event for untold numbers, the race annually draws thousands of women, men and children to some of the most quintessentially scenic acreage in New England. Great food, ice cream, an incredible silent auction and a Fun Run for kids round out the day. Since the first local race in 1993, the VT-NH affiliate has netted more than $5.7 million, seventy-five percent of which ($4.3 million) went to local community breast cancer education, treatment and screening programs. Scavenger Hunt — $200 Prize A village-wide Scavenger Hunt will kick off the Shaftsbury Street Dance and Cruise-In. Teams of up to four people can register at the Shaftsbury Country Store. The entrance fee is $10. The $200 Prize will be awarded to the team that completes the Scavenger Hunt in the least amount of time. Teams can check in with the “starter” from 3 to 5:30 p.m. The winning team will be announced later in the evening during the dance. The Shaftsbury Street Dance and Cruise-In takes place on Saturday, August 1 from 3 to10:30 p.m. There will be lots of fun activities for all ages: food, classic cars, entertainment and contests. Dirty Old Strings at Summer Sounds of Salem

Dirty Old Strings, an acoustic trio from Cambridge, will perform at Summer Sounds of Salem on Saturday, July 25. The free concert begins at 11 a.m., and takes place at the gazebo on Main Street in Salem, during the weekly farmers’ market. This new trio, made up of well-known local musicians, performs an energetic mix of contemporary and traditional bluegrass, swing and folk. Summer Sounds of Salem, a free outdoor concert series sponsored by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, features an eclectic mix of music from around the world. Concerts are held each Saturday at the gazebo on Main Street from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., during the weekly farmers ‘market. Food is for sale during the concerts, including the Rotary Club’s sausage and peppers and baked goods at the farmers’ market.
