Forever Plaid on Fort Salem Main Stage In the early 1960s, a male close harmony singing group, specializing in ‘50s songs, was on its way to its best booking ever when its four members were killed by a bus of Catholic school girls on their way to see the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. Though a metaphor for the death of easylistening at the hand of mop-top rock, it’s scarcely a scenario one would expect could generate the most successful musical revue of the 1990s. Expectations notwithstanding, Forever Plaid has been charming audiences for over 20 years, and it opens at Fort Salem Theater in Salem, New York on July 9, running weekends through July 18. Performances will be held Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. WRGB news anchor Jerry Gretzinger suggested that he’d like to appear in a production of Forever Plaid to the Fort’s artis-

tic director, Jay Kerr, while they worked together in “The Singing Anchors,” a cabaret revue that originated last fall at Fort Salem’s cabaret and enjoyed regional performances in Saratoga, Troy and a show broadcast from WAMC’s The Linda in Albany. Gretzinger enlisted the participation of Luis Manzi, a singer/actor from Springfield, Massachusetts, where the two sang in a Plaid production eight years ago. Gretzinger’s pal, Sev Moro, a staple in the Capital Region theater scene, had always wanted a chance to sing in the show and now has that chance. The quartet is completed by New York State Theatre Institute and Capital Rep veteran, David Girard. Forever Plaid features some of the best-loved tunes from the middle of the last century, including “Three Coins in a Fountain,” “Love Is a Many Splendored

Prostate Cancer Support Group Meeting

A Bennington County Prostate Cancer Support Group meeting will be held in the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center Library in Bennington, Vermont on Tuesday, July 13 at 5:30 p.m. The program format is open discussion; attendees are asked to bring questions, experiences, recent articles or news reports regarding prostate cancer. First United Methodist Church Dinner

The First United Methodist Church in North Adams, Massachusetts will hold a takeout or eat-in dinner on Saturday, July 10 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. A chef ’s salad with roast beef, turkey, ham, American cheese, egg, macaroni salad, rolls and strawberry shortcake on a biscuit will be served. Churches of Evangelical Pastor’s Fellowship Gathering

“That they may all be one...that the world may believe” is the theme of “The 2010 Gathering” of the Church of the Evangelical Pastor’s Fellowship in the Bennington, Vermont region. Three days and evenings of meetings will include special daytime sessions for women on Tuesday, July 13 at 10 a.m.; a meeting for teens on Wednesday, July 14 at 1 p.m.; and a pastors’ meeting on Thursday, July 15 at 10 a.m. Evening meetings will begin at 7 p.m., and all are welcome to attend. The principal speaker will be Rev. Dr. P. Yesupadam, founder of Love-N-Care Ministries International and frequent visitor to the Bennington area. Preschool Pottery for ages 2 to 6 will be offered from July 21 to August 25 at the Salem Courthouse in Salem, New York on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This class is designed to get preschoolers working with clay to explore their creative imaginations. Parents may assist their children or leave them with the instructor to explore their creative independence. Clay Camp for children in grades one through six will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon from July 13 to July 16. This four-day camp will be a great introduction to the pottery craft. Students will have hands-on instruction in making unique pottery pieces. They will enjoy exploring their creativity, turning mud to stone in the Courthouse. Bennington Rotary Rotary Holds Change Over Luncheon The Bennington Rotary Club, which usually meets at Bennington Station at noon, had their luncheon catered at Willow Park in Bennington, Vermont. The Station prepared a great lunch, and Bob Mattison’s 94th birthday was celebrated with a special musical offering by Dave Newell on the trumpet and Oakley Frost on the bass. They played a traditional rendition of “The Birthday Song” and then jazzed in a second rendition. After laughing over the “awards ceremony,” the meeting took a sentimental turn. Outgoing President Lisa Byer gave a short but intensely personal message to members as she handed over the gavel to Ted Bird. There were many teared eyes among the members. Hubbard Hall Curiosity Forum Welcomes Author Nielsen

The Curiosity Forum in Cambridge, New York will host author Annette Nielsen this Sunday, July 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the tent at the Cambridge Farmers’ Market located in the Freight Yard, behind Hubbard Hall in Cambridge. The Farmers’ Market takes place every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Annette Nielsen will sign copies of her new cookbook, Northern Bounty: Recipes from Adirondack Life, Spring & Summer. Northern Bounty is a collection of more than 100 recipes that have appeared in spring and summer issues of Adirondack Life magazine. In it

are fresh dishes using local ingredients, both wild and cultivated — from maple syrup and trout to rhubarb and wild leeks — plus gourmet camping fare from top Adirondack chefs. Cookbook editor Nielsen, who lives in Salem, New York, has contributed articles and columns on regional farms, food and folkways to a variety of publications. LeBarron Family Reunion

The 78th Annual LeBarron Family Reunion will be held at Washington County Park’s Lake Lauderdale on Route 22 in the Town of Jackson, New York on Sunday, July 18. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. sharp; a meeting will be held prior to lunch. Attendees are asked to bring meat to grill and a covered dish (hot or cold) the size of the family. The Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) has announced a series of Friday night events for area youth this summer. All events are free and are open to members and non-members. Summer Sundays at Four Concert Series Continues at PMH The Historic Park-McCullough House (PMH) in North Bennington, Vermont continues its 2010 Summer Sundays At Four Concert Season this Sunday, July 11 at 4 p.m. with a piano recital by George Sebastian Lopez. The program includes five posthumous Variations from Opus 13 by Schumann, 11 Etudes by Chopin, and concludes with Bach’s Goldberg Variations. George Sebastian Lopez has been featured across the globe as recitalist, soloist with orchestra and collaborator. Lopez received critical acclaim for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and has performed

the complete cycle of Beethoven Piano Concertos in his last two concert seasons. He was invited by the Holland Music Sessions, now one of the top performing arenas for up and coming musicians in Europe, to go on a world tour that included recitals in Paris, London, Cologne, New York’s Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and Los Angeles, where he was hailed by the L.A. Salem Courthouse Mobile Project

From July 12 to July 16 from 10 a.m. to noon, young artists will work with Salem Art Works staff to construct a large scale mobile composed of found object sculptures, each made by an individual child, through the Salem Courthouse Mobile Project. The finished mobile will be displayed in the Historic Salem Courthouse in Salem, New York, joining the Our Town mural made by last year’s participants. Participation is free.
