The Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce has donated a portion of the funds raised from the fifth annual Aurora Dance Party to the Center for Communication in Medicine (CCM), a Bennington, Vermont, based non-profit that produces programs to bridge the communication gap between doctors and patients. The gift will help support community education programs. “We will all be patients some day and good care will depend on how well we communicate,” says Celia Engel Bandman, the Center’s co-founder and medical humanist. “But patients and doctors speak different languages and we must make sure we understand each other.” The goal of CCM’s community programs is to educate patients and families about their role in communicating their needs and concerns so that they can help their doctors to be better-informed advisors

The annual Southern Vermont Garlic and Herb Festival will be held at Camelot Village, Route 9 West, in Bennington, Vermont, on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Army Pvt. Ryan J. Bussinghas graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, GA. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training. During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover antipersonnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area. Bussing is the son of Raymond Bussing of County Route 52, Greenwich, NY. The private is a 2008 graduate of Greenwich High School.

When the word “trail” comes to mind, hiking and riding aficionados anticipate a cross-country trek. But a trail can take other forms, too. This summer, throughout Berkshire County, numerous organizations are banding together in a confederation known as the Lincoln Trail. Offering the public access to a broad range of all things Lincoln, the Trail’s purpose is to commemorate the bicentennial of our 16th president’s birth. Its events, exhibits, and ephemera highlight different aspects of Abraham Lincoln’s life and tenure in office. Chesterwood, center of the celebration and located in Stockbridge, is the country home of Daniel Chester French (18501931), the sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. A self-guided tour, “Discover Lincoln at Chesterwood,” connects visitors to displays of

Community Energy Commission Following up on the recent success of the Community Energy Mobilization Project, where volunteers installed energy efficiency materials in 50 local homes, the Dorset and Manchester Energy Committees are pleased to announce that they have been awarded an additional grant from the Stratton Foundation’s Urgent Need program. These funds will be used to install more intensive efficiency measures in two local families’ homes. The basic grant is for $3000, with an additional $2000 available as a “challenge match”. Thanks to two local firms, Hand Energy Services and Energy Wise Homes, which are both offering August 12, 2009

generous discounts on labor and materials, this matching grant has already been met. Through collaboration with the local Interfaith Council, two families have been selected as beneficiaries of this energy efficiency work, which will be completed before the next winter heating season. This project is a wonderful “next step”, building on the first community energy efficiency project, and will serve as a helpful springboard for further efficiency efforts. Working in our own communities, and together as neighbors, we can make a difference. The Stratton Foundation’s

Satellite Shop for Bennington Museum

The Bennington Museum has opened a satellite shop and exhibition space on Main Street in downtown Bennington. This location — next to Izabella’s Eatery — is open every day except Monday for the summer. Opening at 10 a.m., it has later hours Friday through Sunday when it is open until 6 p.m. The location has on exhibit original pottery such as Norton, United States Pottery and David Gil originals. There is information about Grandma Moses, an introduction to her life story along with framed prints - which are on display and also for sale. Knitting Comfort Dolls for CHABHA

Throughout August and September, Yarns for Your Soul will be knitting small African dolls for CHABHA, which stands for Children Affected by HIV/AIDS. Continuing with the year-long charity knitting campaign, “Knit For Your Soul and Theirs,” Yarns for Your Soul will collect knitted comfort dolls also known as “duduzas”. Most children who have been affected by the AIDS epidemic have lost their parents and may even be the heads of their families. Some children are so poor that they use glass bottles as dolls. Duduzas bring comfort to traumatized children. This month, we will be working in conjunction with the Burr and Burton Service Learning Group which is helping to raise funds to mail the dolls to countries such as South Africa and Rwanda. Yarn can be comprised of any fiber that is machine washable. Please note that should you choose to use scrap yarn, CHABA requires the feet and faces of the dolls to be brown. SVMC Urology Welcomes Dr. Donaldson

Dr. Anthony H. Donaldson will join SVMC Urology on August 3. An urologist who has a special interest in laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Donaldson has served in the U.S. Navy for the past 10 years. For the last four, he has been the head of the Department of Urology at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Donaldson and his wife, Liz, are both natives of Washington County, New York. “We wanted to return to this area when my term in the Navy ended,” he stated. “We missed the sense of community you find in this part of the country, as well as the change of seasons and the beautiful countryside.” Dr. Donaldson received his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School and completed his residency in urology at DartmouthHitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He is certified by the American Board of Urology. “I was undecided as to what branch of medicine to go into when I entered medical school,” said Dr. Donaldson. “Once I did a rotation in urology, I knew I had found my niche. I enjoy the mixture of surgery and outpatient care you provide as a urologist,” he added. “I get to care for my patients throughout their treatment. That continuity is important to me. “Even though SVMC is a smaller hospital when compared to those in bigger cities, it is a hospital that is on the cutting edge of medical technology,” said Dr. Donaldson. Dr. Donaldson and his wife recently moved to Salem, New York with their two sons, five-year-old Quinn and two-year-old Declan. An active family, they look forward to enjoying the area’s hiking, gardening, snow-shoeing, and cross country skiing opportunities. They are also interested in small-scale farming. Citizens Bank Makes Generous Donation

Citizens Bank recently made a contribution of $2,500 in support of the Bennington Area Habitat for Humanity Affiliate’s work in Bennington County. Led by West Pawlet Branch Manager, Harry Haldt, a group of employees and customers spent Saturday, June 13 working on the home Habitat is building in North Bennington. At the end of the day, Harry surprised Dick Malley, President of the Bennington Area Habitat Affiliate’s Board of Directors by giving him the contribution. For each of the past five years, Harry Haldt has organized teams from his and other Citizens Banks in Bennington County to help build homes in Shaftsbury, Winhall, Rupert, West Rupert and North Bennington. In addition, for each of the past three years, Harry has helped with the annual Habitat auction. & GARDEN ■ MentorWorks Garden Yields Produce for the Needy

Last spring, participants in MentorWorks, the Hoosick Falls mentoring program, planted a garden at the Hoosick Youth and Community Center as a community service project. Recently, the garden yielded its first crop of beans, which were harvested and donated to the Hoosick Falls Food Pantry. As more fresh vegetables ripen in the garden they will be gathered and donated to help needy families in our community. In addition, plans are in the works to conduct a canned food drive during the Pumpkinpalooza event in September. By supporting programs that help others, such as the Food Pantry, MentorWorks seeks to instill a sense of community service in its participants. MentorWorks is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, administered by the Hoosick Area Partnership for Parents and Youth. Hunter Education Course

There will be a Hunter Education Course in Manchester, Vermont, at the Manchester Rod & Gun Club on Recreation Park Road. The course will be held August 21, 6:30-9 p.m.; August 22, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and August 23, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. These courses include the responsibility and ethics of hunting, but the emphasis is on the safety aspects of gun handling. There is no age limitation for participants, but it is recommended for ages 10 and over. Parents or guardians are invited to take the course with the younger attendees. Hands-on Archaeology at Merck Forest

For two weeks in August Archaeology Day Camp will be offered at Merck Forest & Farmland Center in Rupert, Vermont. Sessions will run August 10-14 and August 17-21. Participants will excavate an early historic archaeological site. Activities are designed to teach kids skills and diversions from the early historic and prehistoric times. Fly Fishing Festival

The American Museum of Fly Fishing’s annual Fly Fishing Festival is the only event of its kind in the region and will take place on Saturday, August 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From antique dealers to artists, reels to rods, a unique mix of 40 artisans, collectors, conservation groups and more will be assembled on the museum grounds on Route 7A in Manchester to celebrate fly fishing. Magical fairies and powerful wizards took over the Hoosick Youth & Community Center last week during the second YCC camp of the summer. Participants created magic wands, snow globes, magic potions, wizard hats, and fairy wings during the week. They focused their creativity to design their own costumes and develop their special magical abilities for a showcase that was presented to parents and friends on Friday afternoon. Additional YCC camps this summer will be held August 17-21, August 24-28 and August 31-September 4. There are a few remaining spaces in these camps. Around the World with 37 Artists

The Bennington Center for the Arts has launched a lavish tour around the world, featuring stops in such exotic locales as Bali, Tibet, Russia, Africa and Venice. No need to renew your passport or update your shots, and you can even drink the water. BCA is pleased to present its perennial favorite, American Artists Abroad. Many of the artists in this show have been in past exhibitions at the Center, including Huihan Liu, born in Guangzhou, China. While Huihan displayed an early interest in and talent for painting, he was not able to pursue his artistic dreams until he was in his early twenties. During the “cultural revolution” of Chairman Mao, his father, who was a professor at a Christian college, was relocated with the entire family to rural China to be “re-educated” as a farmer. Huihan eventually was accepted into the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art where he earned undergraduate and master’s degrees in fine art and then taught for twelve years before immigrating to the United States in 1987 where he earned another Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Figurative artist Scott Burdick was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He says he spent a lot of time in the hospital in casts and on crutches as a young boy and after his mother introduced him to drawing the time passed much more quickly. Scott’s formal art training was received at the American Academy of Art and at the Palette and Chisel Art club, both located in Chicago. Scott travels extensively throughout the world in search of subject matter for his mostly figurative paintings. The diverse cultures, costumes and customs he observes all offer a wide variety of material for his work and make his artwork perfect for this show. “What makes a subject attractive to me are the same things that attract us all. The beauty of a young girl, the character of a weathered face, the solitude of a farm at sunset, or even the story itself behind someone or something that makes it interesting.” Burdick says. Being able to see the world through the artists’ eyes is what this show is all about. California native John Cosby says, “While standing on location, in a place I have never visited, I begin to recognize what is different from all the other places I have been.” American Artists Abroad is on exhibit at the Bennington Center for the Arts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day but Tuesday through September 13. Community Choral Society, Cambridge

The Community Choral Society, under the directorship of Matt Edwards, is beginning its 56th year this September. The choral is made up of vocalists from the surrounding areas and no auditions are necessary. Rehearsals will begin on Sunday, September 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cambridge United Presbyterian Church with performances the first and second Sundays in December. Middleﬁeld Fair Sponsored by Hinsdale Lions Club

The Hinsdale Lions Club will be providing two sit-down meals at the Middlefield Fair on August 15 and 16. Meals will be served from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday will feature baked ham, baked beans, coleslaw, and applesauce with peach cobbler for dessert. Sunday will include baked chicken with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy with homemade chocolate or vanilla cake for dessert. Cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

New England Youth Theatre Presents ‘Grease’

How did the mixture of teen angst and 50’s music that is “Grease” come to be? How about in 1970 Warren Casey gets fired from his job as a lingerie salesman in Chicago? With time on their hands, Casey and his greaser buddy Jim Jacobs start to work on the idea that came to them over a beer at a party — a new musical, one that violates all the rules of “legit” show tune melodies and, instead, is built on nothing less than good old rock n’ roll. Join the high-energy NEYT cast at Rydell High in a fabulous fifties celebration of everyone’s favorite musical! Sponsored by Berkley and Veller Greenwood Country Realtors. Performances are Thurday-Sunday, August 6-9. American String Quartet

The American String Quartet, the resident quartet at the Manhattan School of Music and at the summer Aspen Music Festival, will perform as the final installment of the chamber music series at the Clark, August 25, at 8 p.m. Concert admission is $21; $18 for members and students. The John G. McCullough Free Library in North Bennington, Vermont is planning a book sale and is seeking donations of adult and children’s books, videos, DVDs, and CDs. Area residents should bring donations to the library during operating hours: Tuesday and Wednesday 1–8 p.m., Thursday and Friday 1–6 p.m., or Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Textbooks, Reader’s Digest books, encyclopedias or badly outdated non-fiction cannot be accepted. To make arrangements for other times to drop off donations, please call the library at 802-447-7121. The Book and Bake Sale will take place at the McCullough Library in North Bennington from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 12th and 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday September 13th.
