Recycling and Green Efforts Begin at Hoosick Area Youth Center

Recently, summer campers at the Hoosick Area Youth Center helped hang an “Earth” flag on the exterior flagpole at the center. The flag recognizes efforts being made by the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) to be more environmentally responsible. Campers also painted new recycling tubs for inside the building to encourage everyone to separate cans and bottles from regular trash. Additional efforts will be made on an ongoing basis at the center, including energy efficiency projects. International Projects Inﬂuence Folded Basket Workshop On August 21 from 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m., adults are in for a treat as the Bennington Museum presents State of Craft Folded Baskets led by Brattleboro craft artist, Jackie Abrams. She will lead the group as they work with cotton paper, weave a flat mat, and then experiment with twill

weaves and color designs. Then the class will fold and shape their work to create a 3-dimensional basket. The cost for this workshop is $40 for the class and $25 for the materials. Registration is required and class size is limited to 12 adults. Registration can be made by calling the museum at

Army Pvt. Jason D. Hescock has graduated from the Fire Support Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma. The field artillery specialists serve in intelligence activities including target processing in field artillery, cannon battalions, division artillery, artillery and maneuver brigade and headquarters and fire support elements. The course is designed to train students to establish, maintain, and operate radio and wire communications and speech security equipment, including encoding and decoding messages. They also must prepare and maintain daily staff journals, fire support situation maps, charts and other fire support and target processing procedures, records, and documents. In addition, students assist in initiating requests for field artillery, mortar, naval gunfire, and aerial delivered munitions, and emplace, maintain, and assist in the operation of laser range finders, target designation, and night observation devices. Hescock is the son of Daniel E. and Kathy M. Hescock of Shearer Hill Road, Brattleboro, Vermont. The private is a 2007 graduate of Twin Valley High School, Wilmington, Vermont. Sean P. Trainor has been selected for promotion to the rank of Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Trainor is a noncommissioned officer in charge of the wing command section assigned to the 97th Air Mobility Wing at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma. The sergeant has served in the military for 22 years. He is the son of Isabel K. Montgomery and stepson of John C. Montgomery of Main St., Ludlow, Vermont. The sergeant is a 1987 graduate of Black River High School, Ludlow. August 18, 2010

McCullough Free Library Seeks Donations for Book Sale

A free family program for all ages at the Mt. Holly Town Library, Friday, August 27 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Jake the Snake loves company — and he’s just waiting for the chance to visit with you. A nine-foot long, red-tailed boa constrictor native to the South American jungles, Jake is the perfect experiential learning tool for children and adults. Bennington Seniors Taking a Trip

■

— by Susan J. Coons ...accustomed to speed... When travel by jet became accessible to the average traveler, popular people talked about jet lag. This phenomenon occurred after a coast to coast flight or across the pond, or anywhere they traveled from one time zone to another. The traveler’s body clock had to catch up to their new location. It’s interesting that if you fly west far enough you will pass the International Date Line and lose a day. When you return and cross the International Date Line you will gain a day. No one talks about jet lag today. I don’t know why but I have a theory. We have become accustomed to speed. Everything in our lives whirls around us so fast that we are in a constant state of rush, living in several time zones at once. We have instant news, instant weather reports, instant dinners, instant potatoes, instant beverages, instant access to every kind of information we are seeking. That doesn’t mean the information is accurate, it just means we have access to it. We can scream and shout to the world on the Internet and there is no way to stop us! We can post rumors. We can lie about who we are. We can torment and bully. We can steal identities. There’s no end to the mischief we can cause. A lie is a lie but once spoken the damage is done and the victim is forever trying to recover. Careers can be lost; a livelihood or life can be taken from us. All of the information, too much information, right or wrong, is there every second of every day, faster and faster and faster! We spend hours and hours looking at monitors...the computer at work and the television at home; our Blackberry, our Droid, our iPod, and of course, our cell phones. All of us, young and old alike, are exposed to the demands of our whirling lives. The older we become the faster life passes by. I don’t want any of these artificial causes to steal my days, hours, weeks and years! I get off the merry-go-round when I pull into my driveway at home. That’s where the rest of the world stops and mine begins. No jet lag, no rush. Only one time zone. Mine. _______________________________________________

Vermont mystery writer, Nancy Means Wright will be making an illustrated presentation about her latest book, “Midnight Fires” on August 25 at 7 p.m. at the Mount Anthony Country Club. This historical mystery about Mary Wollstonecraft, the author of “The Vindication of the Rights of Women” and the mother of Mary Shelley who wrote “Frankenstein,” is a departure for Wright. She has written mysteries set in Vermont and featuring sleuth Ruth Willmarth who uncovers the mysteries hidden in her small Vermont town. Set in 18th century Ireland where Wollstonecraft has been hired as a governess,“Midnight Fires” offers a picture of the class tensions that lead to a series of murders that the strong-minded Mary intends to solve. (Basket Workshop, cont.) Abrams has been a basket maker since 1975 when she first apprenticed to Ben Higgins, an 81-year-old craft artist who worked in traditional white ash basket making. She has perfected her skills over the past 30 years, and consistently challenges herself to create new works. Her teaching and consulting work has enabled her to travel to many places – all over the U.S., Australia, and Africa. “These journeys, especially in Africa, have had a profound influence on my work and on my life. I am learning to simplify things, to state what is

important. This is what I hope to express in the work I create,” states the artist. Since 1990, Abrams has been exploring the possibilities of paper as a basket making material. In 2008 Abrams founded and helped to develop the KamiAmi Women’s Cooperative, a fair trade craft enterprise in Pokuase, Ghana. The KamiAmi is a community development project of WomensTrust, a micro-lending organization based in New Hampshire. The women in KamiAmi crochet bags and wallets using plastic bags that litter their environment. The name comes from the first crocheting instruction Abrams learned in the local Ga language: “kamiami,” which translates as “keep it loose.” The project, continuing under her guidance, is becoming sustainable, providing greater income for the women of Pokuase. In 2008 Abrams worked as a consultant for SERRV International (Sales Exchange for Refugee Rehabilitation and Vocation), a non-profit organization that promotes social justice and economic progress by marketing fair trade handcrafts. Visiting southwestern Uganda and northern Ghana as a basket consultant, Abrams worked to help evaluate and develop new designs for the area basketmakers. From 2005 to 2007 she worked with Cross Cultural Collaborative in Nungua, Ghana, assisting in the development of “Recycled Ghana,” a papermaking and bookmaking project. Made by local Nungua children, the sale of these books helps to pay their school fees. Abrams’ works are held in the public collections of the Racine Art Museum of Fine Arts, Racine, Wisconsin, the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, Concord, New Hampshire, Michigan State University Museum, Lansing, Michigan, and Asheville Art Museum, Asheville, North Carolina. For the past four years, she has been inducted into the Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, and Who Who’s of American Women. She is currently a Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) artist. She exhibits her work at galleries and museums throughout the country, and is a featured artist in the State of Craft Exhibit. Abrams also teaches throughout the U.S., Canada, Ghana, and Australia. Opening Reception at Bennington Arts Guild Beginning August 21, from 5 until 8 p.m., The Bennington Arts Guild (BAG) is proud to feature the third show in its new Guest Gallery. Sticking to a successful format, the Guest Gallery will feature two artists working in complementary mediums. Sharing the opening on August 21 are ceramic artist Sara Meehan and painter Bonnie White. Sara Meehan moved to Vermont at an early age, and grew up in the Northeast Kingdom. She first encountered pottery in a class at college and since then has worked for various local potters. Sara worked at the Natalie Blake studio, where she learned to work with porcelain and to use the sgraffito technique. She has since developed her own line of work using this technique. “I love sgraffito (slip carving), because it enables me to combine my love of drawing with the beauty of the three-dimensional porcelain forms. Surrounded by the New England landscape, and inspired by the richness of detail and design found in illuminated manuscripts, I try to create pieces which will combine the living, fluid quality of nature with the intricacy of old craftsmanship.” The other artist featured in BAG’s new Guest Gallery is Bonnie White. Bonnie grew up on a horse farm in upstate New York, and upon its closing, began to paint. She draws much of her inspiration from life on the farm as well as the historic homes and villages that surrounded it. Bonnie is honored to have been chosen to design an ornament for the Christmas tree at the White House in 2007 and to have been selected by “Early American Life” magazine for their Directory of Traditional Crafts or their Holiday Directory for the past four years. Bonnie is inspired by several folk artists whose paintings give her a sense of nostalgia — none more than Grandma Moses. She is thrilled to have her work hanging several blocks from the Bennington museum and the Moses collection! “I love color and lots of detail. As long as I remember, I’ve wished that I had lived 100 years ago when life was simpler. Everyone traveled

Ceremony for Service Men and Women of USS Bennington

Annual Harvest Supper Country Ham Dinner

The Ladies Aid of the First Congregational Church of Wallingford will be holding their annual Country Ham Dinner in the Church basement at 189 South Main Street, Wallingford, on Thursday, September 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu includes Wallingford Locker ham, raisin sauce, creamy potatoes, baked beans, garden salad, corn bread, rolls, homemade pies, along with coffee, iced tea or apple cider and all for $10 per adult, $5 per child (under 7, no charge). Bereavement Support Groups Offered

Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice (RAVNAH) will be offering a variety of bereavement support groups for community members who have experienced a loss through death. All groups will meet at 7 Albert Cree Drive in Rutland. Call Ann LaRocque at 7701516 to register. Newly Bereaved Support Program – This program is for those who have experienced a loss in the past 2-6 months, and provides group support as well as education about the process of grieving. After completion of this program, participants may choose to continue with the Grief Education and Support Group. Dates: Tuesdays, September 7, 14 and 21 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. Register by September 1. Grief Education and Support Group – Beginning on Tuesday, September 28 from 4:30–6 p.m., RAVNAH will offer a six session, biweekly program for those who have experienced a loss through death. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences of loss with others, as well as gain an understanding of the process of grief and its impact on life emotionally, socially, mentally and spiritually. Register by September 20. Healing Grief Through Writing – Each person grieves uniquely when faced with the death of a loved one. Writing is one way to sort out one’s life and integrate the change that loss brings. This six session group will meet bi-weekly beginning on Monday, September 13 from 6–7:30 p.m., and will utilize the tool of writing as a means of processing grief. It is for anyone who has suffered at any time a loss through death. No writing experience is necessary and first time writers are encouraged to attend. Register by September 7 and bring a notebook and pencil or pen. Bereavement Book Club – Many books have been written about the experience of losing a loved one. This program utilizes the tool of the written word as a means for healing after a loss. We will read and discuss “Don’t Let Death Ruin Your Life: A Practical Guide to Reclaiming Your Life After the Death of a Loved One.” The group meets from 6–7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 20; Monday, October 18; Tuesday, November 16; and Monday, December 13. Grace Cottage Offers Free Tobacco Cessation Classes

Grace Cottage Hospital will host “Your Quit, Your Way,” a free sixweek tobacco cessation class, on six Tuesdays, August 31 to October 5, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the hospital’s Community Wellness Center, 133 Grafton Road (Route 35), in Townshend. Sindy Hassig, a Grace Cottage physical therapist and a Tobacco Treatment Specialist, will conduct the classes. Those who have tried to quit but are still smoking are particularly encouraged to enroll in this program. Free nicotine replacement products are available for any Vermont resident enrolled in this program. Call the Grace Cottage Wellness Program, 802-365-3649, to register or for more information. A free “Tobacco-Free Support Group” meets weekly at Grace Cottage on Thursday evenings, 5-6 p.m., in the Community Wellness Center. Celebrate Recovery Offers Hope

Are you stuck in a rut? Have you lost hope that your life will ever change - at least for the better? We are excited to announce that Celebrate Recovery is here to give you that hope! On Tuesday evenings, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Hoosick Falls Community Alliance Church, 484 Hill Road in Hoosick Falls, people are finding the help and support they need in their journey to freedom. Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered 12 Step recovery program and support group designed to help us break free from anger, depression, fear, addictions, and the negative attitudes and emotions that we just can’t seem to shake. Whatever our “hurt, habit or hang-up” is, Celebrate Recovery can help. By applying the 12 Steps, we are given the tools to help us work through and deal with life issues in a systematic and healthy way. We finally realize that there is hope and we don’t have to live in that rut forever. Celebrate Recovery meetings consist of a 12 Step teaching or testimony, followed by Open Share support groups, where attendees are split into small groups by gender and given an opportunity to share, in a safe place, things they are struggling with. At no time is anyone required to speak and anonymity is absolutely essential. Celebrate Recovery is open to anyone who desires to be free from all the things that are weighing them down. Hundreds of groups meet weekly around the globe, with peoples’ lives being transformed step by step. There is no fee or time commitment required and child care is provided. Make a Difference as a Hospice Volunteer

VNA and Hospice of SVHC will begin a nine-week training session on September 9, for those interested in becoming a hospice volunteer. Participants will meet every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The course is open to anyone in the community who is interested in becoming a hospice volunteer or learning more about hospice. Attending the training does not obligate you to volunteer. The goal of the training is to help define the role of a hospice volunteer. It covers the history and philosophy of hospice, team building, help with communicating effectively, ways to manage death, dying, and bereavement, and concepts of spirituality. After the training, hospice volunteers can fill a variety of roles at VNA and Hospice of SVHC. There are opportunities to play an administrative role — helping with mailings, copying, or other office work — or to be involved in patient care. Volunteers perform tasks such as staying with a patient so the family can take a break, providing companionship to hospice patients and their caregivers, assisting hospice patients and their families with meals, and offering bereavement support. The volunteer is a very important part of the hospice team. For more

Bird Walk at Hildene

The next bird walk at Hildene: The Lincoln Family Home in Manchester will be Saturday, August 21. It seems particularly quiet in the bird world these days. Nestlings have fledged; everyone is tanking up for their journey south. While most birds will not start moving for a few weeks, the long distance shore bird migrants are showing up already. With the water very low in the Hildene wetlands, there is great expectation that there will be surprises. Please meet at the Visitors’ Center at 7 a.m. Bird walks are open to all and are beginner to advanced to family friendly. Binoculars are available to borrow. �� Calling All Chunkers, Cooks and Runners! Exciting Competitions will be part of Second Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza

Exciting competitions will be featured during the Second Annual Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza, set for the weekend of September 24-26, in the Village of Hoosick Falls, New York. This family-friendly community event is a pride and tradition initiative organized by the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3). All competitions will be on Saturday, September 25. Rain date is Sunday, September 26. Punkin’ Chunkin Headlining the festival will be the area’s only Punkin’ Chunkin’ competition. This thrilling exposition of manmade machines will take place at the Town of Hoosick Athletic Fields on Main Street on Saturday, September 25. Teams are invited to build a non-motorized pumpkin hurling machine to enter in the contest. No propellants, compressed air, explosives or pyrotechnics can be used. Each machine will have six chances to hurl small pumpkins at targets set up 100-250 feet away. Machines hurling beyond the target area are disqualified. Points are

Typically, “siege” machines such as catapults, trebuchets, onagers, ballistas, mangonels and other stored energy launchers are used. Spectators are welcome and there is no admission fee to watch. Teams can represent area high schools, colleges, and businesses, or can simply include a group of family members or friends. Chili Cook-off Area restaurants, clubs, families, friends, professional cooks and anyone who thinks their chili recipe is a winner, are welcome to enter the Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza Chili Cook-off. This event begins at noon on September 25 at the Town Athletic Fields (look for the tent near the skating rink). Each entrant must bring four quarts of their special chili for sampling by the judges and the public. There is a small admission fee to sample the chili entries, and each sampler gets to cast a vote for the “crowd favorite” award. The event winner, selected by a panel of judges, will win a trophy and $100. The crowd favorite earns bragging rights and a trophy. To enter the chili cook-off, call 518-686-9050 or e-mail contact@hoosickyouth.org. 5K Road Race and Fun Run The Pumpkinpalooza 5K Race will begin and end at Wood Memorial Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 25. The course weaves through the Village of Hoosick Falls and includes hills, straight-aways, and a few turns, as well as a nice stretch along the Hoosick River. The first 50 registrants will receive an official Pumpkinpalooza t-shirt. Race day registration is available beginning at 7:30 a.m., but advance registration is appreciated. Visit www.hoosickyouth.org for details on registering for the race. Following the 5K race, there will be a Kids Fun Run from Wood Park to the Town Athletic Fields.
