Acclaimed ed Author and Artist to Speak at the Community Center in Salem

On Thursday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m., the Courthouse Community Center in Salem will host a lively discussion with special guests, author Gail Fraser and her artist husband, Art Poulin. Gail and Art have both walked away from successful careers to follow their

dreams which lead them to Lazy Goose Farm, a 40-acre gentleman’s farm nestled in the countryside of scenic Washington County. Gail has proclaimed that she and Art are happily immersed in “phase II” of their lives in a world of their making. Up until the spring of 2003, Ms. Fraser was caught up in the high pressure corporate world as an Associate Partner for Accenture, the world’s largest consulting firm. Gail said “it was a privilege to work with the best and brightest, but I was always haunted by the feeling that I didn’t belong and by the possibility that there was something more fulfilling out there waiting for me.” Immediately upon her corporate departure, she embarked upon her first novel in the Lumby series. Lumby is Ms. Fraser’s fictitious town where decency prevails and life is as it should be. Her fifth novel, “Lumby on the Air” was released in July of this year. Art is one of America’s foremost folk artists, and one of his works, “Morning Flight” recently captivated folks and represented the 2010 Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival. Upon receiving an undergraduate degree in fine art in 1975, he enlisted in the military and secured a position as a tenor in the U.S. Army Chorus, a position he held IN THIS ISSUE: for over twenty years. Army National Guard Pvt. Nathan A. Morency has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Morency is the grandson of Susan Havens of East Street, Fort Edward, New York. Air Force Airman Kirk T. Bolduc graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Christina Bolduc of Church Street, Fort Edward, New York, and Marcel Bolduc of May Street, Glens Falls, New York. Bolduc is a 2008 graduate of Fort Edward Union Free School District. Get Well, Lindy!

Lindy “Lynch-Pin of Events” in Bennington, is on the mend after a serious and painful fall on Thursday, September 2. She is the driving force behind many events that all of us and visitors alike enjoy working on and attending. I’m grateful for and impressed by the dedication of the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (Brenda Jones was everywhere), Executive Director Joann Erenhouse, her staff, Patty Surdam and all of the other volunteers who worked so hard on the Garlic Fest. Rotary Interact students from MAUHS were there helping at the gate and with parking. You will find Rotarians, Lions, members of the Chamber, students, and volunteers from many other organizations in our area helping out at these important events that bring so much to our community. The same gang of folks will be working at the Bennington Car Show on September 18 and 19, bringing more revenue to our area and more fun for you. I’m proud to be a part of these events and one of the folks lucky enough to be there first hand. I’ll be working the garbage detail at the Car Show! Fun, just a lot of fun! — Susan J. Chicken Pie Supper at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, located at 200 Pleasant Street in Bennington announces the return of its annual “Old Fashioned” Chicken Pie Supper. The dinner will be held on Saturday, October 2. The first sitting is at 5:15 p.m. and a second sitting is at 6:30 p.m. The price of the dinner will be $12 for adults, $5 for children under 13 and no charge under 3 years of age. Empty Bowls Glazing Party

The Bennington Empty Bowls project is ready to paint all the beautiful ceramic bowls that have been made in our community this summer. Bring your family and friends and join us for a free afternoon of fun and an opportunity to express your artistic self. The glazing party will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, September 19 from 2 to 6 p.m. St. Peter’s is located at the corner of School and Pleasant Streets in downtown Bennington. The Bennington Empty Bowls project is sponsored by Greater Bennington Interfaith Community Services, Inc., a local not-for-profit organization that runs the Food and Fuel Fund and the Bennington Free Clinic. Goals for the Empty Bowls project are threefold: to bring our community together in a creative process; to raise awareness of local hunger; and to to raise funds for the Food and Fuel Fund. Bowls for the Empty Bowls project have been created by members of our community over this past summer. Over 200 bowls were made at the Fourth of July celebration at Willow Park alone! Using natural clay and simple hand-building techniques, each bowl is individually formed by a member of our community. The bowls are then dried for a few days before they are fired in a kiln at a very high temperature to make them hard and long-lasting. Once the bowls are glazed or painted in a myriad of colors at the bowl glazing event, they will be re-fired making them safe for eating. The community will be invited to come together on October 17 for the Empty Bowls Soup Supper to choose a bowl to bring home and to enjoy a variety of yummy soups while at the event. The empty bowl is a wonderful image, full of metaphoric potential. In Thailand, for example, Buddhist monks and nuns have a single possession: their bowls. Each morning, they knock on doors and receive a bit of food from each house. In this way, the empty bowl represents human independence, the truth that we only survive by giving and receiving. — by Susan J. Coons ...xxxx... It starts so slowly, so innocently. A favorite ceramic cup drops and breaks and... “I can save these broken pieces and collect enough in the future to glue them onto a pot and have a pretty pot for a plant...someday.” Little pieces of xxxx. How does it progress? Well, it can begin by driving past a tag sale. The head abruptly clicks left or right and the eye scans all the xxxx set out on tables, the ground and hangers. Wait! I think I spotted a chipped crystal condiment dish! I brake and slam the car into reverse, slowly backing up scanning the site to be certain that the eye didn’t deceive the mind. Ah ha! There it is. Only ten cents for a chipped crystal relish dish. That’s how it starts. You’ve begun to collect xxxx. It slowly fills first one drawer and then another and another. After a few years the “must haves” acquired from tag sales spread to boxes stored in closets, attics, basements, garages, and the trunk of the car. How do I know so much about the collection of xxxx you ask? Because I practiced the collection of xxxx for many years. I know all about it! I’m in recovery now. I can drive by tag sales and not even blink an eye. Oh, I might slow down a little, but no eye click! Maybe a glance, but no eye click! My house isn’t really cluttered. I call it eclectic. Interesting. Disposing of xxxx is difficult in New York State. My daughter and I dismantled an almost 30-year old television that I would have had to

take to Albany for disposal. It took me several hours, but it was worth it. In its original condition, the TV was very heavy. I managed to take it apart to the point of the only thing remaining in tact was the picture tube. I tossed out wires, the cabinet, screws and other things that held the TV together, and my daughter took the picture tube to Albany for disposal. I don’t know what’s legal or illegal to toss. We aren’t even supposed to toss out expired prescriptions. We have to hang on to them until the next time there is a special collection. I broke a CFL light bulb in my bedroom, swept it up and tossed it in the trash. I know that was wrong. Thank God there are no surveillance cameras in my home! I consider broken light bulbs xxxx, but not the kind you would keep. Imagine someday finding a bag of broken lightbulbs in my basement. The new homeowners would probably wonder what I was thinking saving broken light bulbs! A good result of the flooding of my basement last February was that half of the xxxx had to be tossed out. Two truck loads of xxxx. I don’t even miss it! There are two definitions of xxxx: One man’s xxxx is another man’s treasure; and, if you haven’t seen it or used it for two years, it’s definitely xxxx! xxxx — junk. What did you think I meant? ________________________________________________

The Bennington County Choral Society, directed by Edwin Lawrence, is beginning rehearsals for a performance of Benjamin Britten’s Saint Nicolas jointly presented with the Bennington Children’s Chorus. This interesting work tells the story of the life of the saint (not Santa Claus!) in a delightful dramatic way. The performance will take place at the Green Mountain Christian Center on Main Street on November 20 and 21. A modest fee of $25 is asked from each singer, per concert. Senior Corps Week, September 20–24

Last year, all over the country more than 450,000 Senior Corps volunteers aged 55 and over served more than 98 million hours through 65,000 organizations, improving the lives of millions of our most vulnerable citizens. Senior Corps is impacting our nation in substantive ways and making life better for those in need. Green Mountain RSVP and Volunteer Center is a part of Senior Corps and we want to share our good news with everyone! Right here in Southern Vermont, in the counties of Bennington, Windham and Windsor, 1,108 RSVP volunteers are giving back to their communities every day. They worked hard all their lives raising families and bringing home the bacon and now instead of putting up their feet in the recliner, they are back at it, only this time they are doing work that gives to others and themselves at the same time. Their work is rewarding and important. They are truly making our corner of the world a better place to live. When Doug Krause goes to Bennington District Family Court each week he makes a tremendous difference to children who, through no fault of their own, are going through the court system. Doug and other volunteer Guardians ad Litem are there to lend them guidance and support. Cindy Oles makes a difference at the Woodford Elementary School where she helps children who are struggling with reading. They look forward to her weekly visits and the time she is able to give them helps them to excel in their learning process. In Springfield, RSVP volunteer Shirley Cooper has volunteered at Red Cross blood drawings for the past 40 years. She is also is a Creative Crafter who knits beautiful baby items to be donated at Springfield Hospital and Springfield Santa Claus Club. Althea Derstine, an RSVP volunteer from Bridgewater, has made a positive impact as a Bone Builder leader, a thrift shop worker at Bridgewater Sustainable Earth thrift shop, and as an AARP Tax Aide volunteer. Lois Thompson started a Bone Builders Program at her senior housing apartment in Brattleboro. She also helps with community lunches, mailings for non-profits, serves on the volunteer recognition committee of Green Mountain RSVP and works with children in an AmeriCorps after school arts and crafts program. Jenny Hinton raises hundreds of pounds of vegetables each year for area food shelves, leads her church choir and takes elders grocery shopping. As if this weren’t enough, she also assists tenants in senior housing apartments keep their homes uncluttered and ready for inspection. As Jenny likes to say, “If they say it can’t be done, they haven’t called me yet!” The work of these volunteers can be multiplied throughout the state of Vermont, to our neighboring states and all across the country. When you think of the impact they are making everywhere, it is astonishing and heartwarming. Let’s take a pay rate of $12 per hour, which is on the low side for what many volunteers do, and multiply it by the 98 million hours that volunteers over age 55 gave last year in the U.S. Wow! It’s over a billion dollars worth of caring, helping, teaching, feeding, building and listening. That’s quite a contribution and something we at Green Mountain RSVP are proud to be a part of. David F. Stacco, PhD., CM, Retail Operations Manager at Whitman’s Feed Store in North Bennington has achieved the certified manager’s designation from the Institute of Certified Professional Managers. Worldwide, more than 10,000 management professionals have earned certification through ICPM, which is headquartered at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Certified Managers designation identifies those who have met requirements in the areas of education and experience and have passed a comprehensive exam covering managerial theories, analytical skills and decision-making skills. In addition, Certified Managers accept the commitment for ongoing professional development through annual recertification requirements. In addition to his managerial role at Whitman’s, Stacco is entering his 42nd year as a professional dog trainer, established Canine Cuts, a pet grooming service located at Whitman’s Feed Store and operates Organizational Foundations, a business consulting firm. David received his Doctorate in Organizational Management from Camden University in June 2008.

Pownal American Legion, Post #90 has been chosen to host the 4th District meeting on October 23. The post is open to the public Thursday through Saturday, from 3 to11 p.m. Bingo is held every Thursday evening for family enjoyment. The Pittsfield Department of Community Development Recreation Program has announced that the Pittsfield, Massachusetts Halloween Parade will be held on Friday, October 29, at 7 p.m. We encourage school or community/civic groups to participate in this Pittsfield tradition. Every ‘unit’ will need to complete a general entry form, and those entering a float must also complete the float entry form. All float entries must have a theme that is Halloween related. The deadline for completed forms is Friday, October 8. There will be a float seminar for all organizations building floats. If your organization/school would like to build a float, a representative must attend. This seminar will be Monday, September 20, at 6 p.m., in room 203 of Pittsfield’s City Hall. All parade participants must attend one mandatory meeting either on Wednesday, October 20 or Monday, October 25 in room 203 of Pittsfield’s City Hall, 70 Allen Street. Both begin at 6 p.m. One representative of each organization must attend a meeting if they plan to be in the parade as a float, band or marching unit. 66th Annual Halloween Parade Information

Seminar on U.S. Constitution

The Southern Vermont Liberty Council and the Bennington County Chapter of the Campaign for Liberty will sponsor a five-part seminar on the U.S. Constitution beginning Thursday, September 16. The five-hour DVD seminar will be shown over three days, beginning with a one-hour session entitled “America’s Foundational Principles” on September 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rotary Room of the Bennington Free Library. On Sunday, September 19, the seminar will continue with a two- hour session in which the “Founders’ Constitution and The Civil War” will be discussed beginning at 2 p.m. in the Wills Insurance Room of the Library. On Sunday, September 26, the seminar will wrap up with “The Progressives’ Constitution and The Administrative State.” This session will be in the Rotary Room of the library and will begin at 2 p.m. This seminar is free and open to the public. Bennington Quiltfest

The 2010 Bennington Quiltfest is presented by the Quiet Valley Quilters Guild on Saturday, September 18, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, September 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School, 747 East Road, Bennington, Vermont, with plenty of parking. Featured quilter this year is Bethany Reynolds who has been quilting and teaching since 1982. She and her husband owned a fabric and quilt shop for ten years. As the originator of Stack-n-Whack, she has the knack for finding ways to get great results with less work and loves sharing her tricks. The raffle quilt is named Tutti Fruitti and is queen-size in a rainbow of Bali hand-painted and batik fabrics. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. You need not be present to win. The quilt show events include new and vintage quilts, Guild challenge, door prizes, vendors, People’s Choice awards, demonstrations, consignment boutique, special exhibit and food. New this year is professional AQS Certified Appraiser Nicole Menard. Jay Ungar and Molly Mason in Concert

Jay Ungar and Molly Mason will launch the season for Bennington’s Meetinghouse Café on Friday, September 17. The concert begins at 8 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $18. Coffee and snacks will be available for purchase. Jay Ungar and Molly Mason have performed internationally. While known to many for “Ashokan Farewell,” the theme and signature music for Ken Burns’ The Civil War, they have years of performing behind them. The Meetinghouse Café is located at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 108 School Street in downtown Bennington. Information on the concert is available at www.uubennington.com. Since joining forces in the late 1970s, Jay and Molly have become one of the most celebrated duos on the American acoustic music scene. With their comfortable sense of fun and their love of music, they make each concert a musical journey, sometimes spanning two continents and two centuries. The Southern Vermont Garlic Festival was Bigger Than Ever

There were record crowds at the Southern Vermont Garlic & Herb Festival at Camelot Village in Bennington. Hurricane Earl by-passed the area enough to bring breezes and a very quick afternoon shower that did not diminish the success of the festival. At over 12,000 in attendance, the festival was even bigger than last year. Many vendors needed to re-stock their booths. With food, activities, music, products and fun, the festival delivered a good time for all. With more vendors and a wonderful crowd, the Garlic Fest committee chairs and volunteers followed through on the excellent organization mapped out by events chair, Lindy Lynch. Lindy was sidelined by an accident on the day before the Garlic Fest. She is recovering but was very disappointed to have to miss the action of the festival itself. For this Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce event to have been named a Top Ten Vermont Fall Event by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, a Top Twenty Vermont Event by Yankee Magazine, and be called out by Reuters as One of the Top Ten Garlic Fests in the World was not an over statement. Judging by the visitors and vendors they all had a marvelous time.

AARP Driver Safety Course

An AARP Driver Safety Course is being sponsored by the Bennington Senior Center, on Thursday, September 22 from 8:30 a.m., to approximately 12:30 p.m. The class is all about change: how we have changed since we started driving; how the rules of the road and the roads themselves have changed; and how our cars and the vehicles around us have changed. We also discuss ways to adapt to these changes so that we can continue to be safe drivers. The cost of the course is $12 for an AARP member and $14 for a non-member. Upcoming Event at SML

Parenting Class - Bruce Weiner, head of Psychological services for the Berlin School district and experienced parent educator, will be offering a parenting class at the Stephentown Memorial Library on five consecutive Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m., beginning September 23. The only cost will be $15 for course workbooks and this can be waived for those with financial need. The course will consist of the basics tenets of Parent Effectiveness Training, the positive character education focus on problem solving with children and other issues brought up by parents during the course. First Fall Guided Canoe Trip

On Sunday, September 19, the Battenkill Conservancy will hold its first fall canoe trip down the Battenkill. Meet Kelly Nolan, Battenkill Conservancy’s River Watch Coordinator, at 9:00 a.m at Battenkill Valley Outdoors located at 1414 Route 313 in Cambridge, New York. Kelly is a New York State licensed guide with extensive knowledge of river ecology and conservation. He is also a North American Benthological Society certified “Aquatic Bug” taxonomist with several years of aquatic biology and taxonomy experience. Spend the day floating down the Battenkill in a canoe or kayak with a stop at the confluence of Murray Hollow and Steele Brook to take water chemistries, discuss the water quality differences of these tributaries, and talk about this year’s fish survey results, while enjoying mountain views, sandbars, remote stretches, and covered bridges. Learn what Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera are, and enjoy the lunch you have brought along. This trip is ideal for newcomers and experienced canoeists as well as kayakers, but not recommended for very young children. Space is limited, so please make your reservation early by contacting Don or Lisa Otey at 518-677-3311. Cost for the event is $50 for one person to attend, $75 for a couple and $100 for a family of 3 or more. Part of the proceeds from this year’s river trips will help fund the Battenkill Conservancy’s River Watch program.

‘Emily Dickinson in Words and Song’

The Cantilena Chamber Choir will present a concert, “Emily Dickinson in Words and Song” on Sunday, October 10, at 5 p.m. The performance at Trinity Church will feature music by Aaron Copland:“Emily Dickinson Songs” and Eliot Carter: “Musicians Wrestle Everywhere,” and “Heart Not So Heavy.” Also on the program is Samuel Barber’s “Let Down the Bars O Death,” and Alice Parker’s Emily Dickinson songs and music by Libby Larsen. There will also be a pre-concert lecture at 4:15 p.m. about Dickinson’s life and work by Cindy Dickinson, the Director of Interpretation and Programming at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst. In a special collaboration with the choir, actor Jonathan Epstein will read the poems before the music. Mr. Epstein has most recently starred as Leontes in the Shakespeare & Company’s critically acclaimed production of “The Winter’s Tale” and before that at the Berkshire Theater Festival as Engstrand in Ibsen’s “Ghost” and Davies in Pinter’s “The Caretaker.” All tickets are $15 and are available at the door or in advance by email from satbchoir@yahoo.com. Classical Guitar Recital in Williamstown

Classical guitarist Gianni Donati will return to his native Berkshire County to perform an afternoon recital on Sunday, September 19 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Williamstown, Massachusetts. A reception will follow. Admission is free and all are welcome. The program will feature the rarely-performed“Sets Variaciones Sobre un Tema de Milan” by Joaquin Nin-Culmell, founder of the Berkshire Symphony Orchestra, and the Cinco Preludios by Argentinian composer Maximo Diego Pujo. A variety of other works will also be presented. Mr. Donati, a 1970 graduate of Mount Greylock Regional High School, Amherst College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, studied French horn with Andre Speyer, composition with Lewis Spratlan and Donald Wheelock, and classical guitar with Alice Artzt. He performs frequently in the Princeton, New Jersey area, where he practiced law for many years before turning to music as a second career. Shaftsbury Honors Angie Abbatiello

On Tuesday, August 31, Angie Abbatiello was honored at a pot-luck dinner at the Shaftsbury Methodist Church. Additional table and chairs had to hastily be set up to accommodate the crowd which came out to honor Angie Abbatiello, a preserver of history, champion of democracy, and Head Town Lister. Governor Douglas sent his good wishes and congratulations to Angie saying “As a town lister with a love of history and historic preservation, your dedication to the enhancement of Shaftsbury has enriched your community and leaves a proud legacy”. Ms Abbatiello was instrumental in the Historical Society’s recent acquisition of the Governor Jonas Galusha Homestead as well as the establishment of a historic marker at the Galusha homestead in 2006. As Lister, Angie shepherded Shaftsbury through two town-wide reappraisals, putting in countless hours ensuring equity and transparency in the process. An active member of the Republican Club, Angie was also honored with a citation presented by Dan Riley on behalf the Bennington County Republican Club.
