The Ethan Allen Colonial Fair sponsored by the Bennington Rotary Club will bring together local historical societies, vendors, reenactors in an authentic battle camp, authentic Revolutionary War battle reenactment, a Fife and Drum Corps, vendors, activities for all ages, food, refreshments, a cash bar, and entertainment throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, October 9 and 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at Colgate Park, Route 9 west, Bennington, Vermont. Army National Guard Pvt. Todd W. Cleavland has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. He is the son of Judy Efelis of Ray Road, Greenwich, New York. Cleavland is a 2009 graduate of Whitehall High School, New York. Army Pfc. Charles E. Among activities offered at the Ethan Allen Colonial Fair are: • Two guided tours of the Battle Encampment both days. • Authentic battle at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. • Different toys and games that were popular with colonial children such as: rolling hoops, jacks, marbles, whirli-gigs, Jacob’s ladder, hoops, tops, and more will be demonstrated and you can give them a try! • Potato sack races in the field and the game of Graces. • Children will have the opportunity to wear clothing fashioned from the 1700s and have their photos taken. • Crafts that were made long ago such as tinsmithing, yarn dolls, carding wool and more will be offered. • Square dancing (the Virginia Reel). • Storytelling from long ago, which ends with flint-making and a military drill. • Riddles and tongue twisters for you to try and even some “butter-churning.” • Attend a “Colonial School” when the bell rings. Behave yourself or you will end up in the corner wearing a dunce hat! • Flag making with a colonial flair. • A Children’s Parade will be held at 1 p.m., led by a Fife and Drum Corps. Famous Colonial characters will visit the event, including Mr. John Stark as represented by author Karl Crannell who has recently published a biography about John Stark. Phyllis Chapman will share her knowledge regarding healthcare in the 1700s. The Ethan Allen Colonial Fair will be filled with exciting activities for one and all. First Baptist Announces Fall Tag Sale

The First Baptist Church of Bennington, Vermont announces a Fall Tag Sale on Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2. The tag sale features a wide variety of items (fall and winter clothing, household goods, children’s toys, books, etc.). The tag sale will be held on Friday, October 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, October 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds benefit the work of the American Baptist Women’s Ministries. Hoosick Falls Central School Choir to Sing at Carnegie Hall

Twenty-five students of the Hoosick Falls Senior Choir have the honor of being part of “An American Christmas Carol” at Carnegie Hall on December 2. This concert, directed by renowned composer Tim Janis, will feature a 200 voice choir, a 94 piece orchestra with special guests Donald Braswell, Sarah Darling, Jackie Evancho and Jim Cole. Only two high schools were chosen, most of the 200 voices are adult choirs. HFCS was chosen after working with Mr. Janis on “Celebrate America”, which was aired on PBS in March. Discount tickets are available for purchase from Ms. Yudkoff until September 30. Coach transportation is being offered for $26.00 round trip for the day. Spend a day enjoying the winter wonderland of NYC and end the day supporting the students of HFCS at this fabulous concert. 7th Annual Autumn Arts and Crafts Festival

The Fall Foliage Festival will be kicking off very soon and there are a list of events scheduled throughout the week including the 7th Annual Autumn Arts and Craft Festival. The Festival, which takes place on Saturday, October 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be held on the historical north side of Main Street in North Adams and will feature the work of an estimated 50 crafters, artists and vendors. Photographs, handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, gourmet food, holiday items, pen and ink drawings, silversmithing, local maple products, oil painting, and more will be featured. Event coordinator Jen Barbeau states, “The variety and quality of work being represented is outstanding.” Local craft and artisan shops from throughout New England will also be represented and food will be available throughout the day. “We are very fortunate to include the Vermont Snowman Company, Caproni Family Sugarbush, Only Silver and several members of Berkshire Made in our list of participants,” adds Barbeau. Music will be provided throughout the day by DJ Nate Samson of Ultimate Entertainment and The Wild Country Cloggers of Bennington will showcase 2 afternoon performances. Barbeau shared “I’m thrilled with the turnout and interest in the festival from folks across the northeast as well as the local community. There are still a few spaces available to participate. Preview Performance at Oldcastle Theatre

There will be a preview performance of the Oldcastle Theatre Company’s production of Clifford Odets’ classic American play, “Awake and Sing,” Thursday, September 30, at 11 a.m. at the Bennington Center for the Arts for senior citizens with special reduced tickets of only $15 for all seats. Set in the Bronx, New York in 1935, “Awake and Sing” tells the story of the brawling, passionate Berger family as they struggle through the Great Depression. Three generations in a cramped city apartment battle with each other while loving each other. A gritty, fearless, tender and touching comedy-drama, the play is filled with vibrant, lyric, jargonfilled language and vivid and unforgettable characters. “This is a nostalgic and yet oddly up to the minute play,” according to the play’s director, Eric Peterson. “As we’re now living through the Great Recession, art created during the Great Depression seems very much alive and real to us. Odets is a great playwright and “Awake and Sing” is considered his masterpiece. We are delighted to be able to offer these specially priced tickets to local seniors.” The cast of nine includes Oldcastle favorites Willy Jones, Christine Decker, and Richard Howe plus Kent Burnham, Patricia Satomasso, Matt Malloy, Peter d’Arcy Langstaff, and Ron Nagle. Catamount Rotary to Host Moonlight in Vermont

Please join us in an autumn celebration of food, wine, and music in Bennington, Vermont, during the most spectacular time of the year. Our third Moonlight in Vermont event will be held October 23 at the Bennington Center for the Arts. It will feature a sampling of fine wines from around the globe and culinary delights from 14 area restaurants, including the award-winning Yonos and New World Wine Bar and Bistro in Albany, New York, home of Food Network’s “Chopped” winner Ric Orlando. Vermont’s Chef of the Year, Amy Chamberlain from The Perfect Wife, will also prepare special treats for the evening. A silent and live auction of artwork, trophy wines, trips, and other quality items will lead off the evening, followed by a dine-around to delight the senses. All proceeds from the event will benefit the local and international charitable programs of Rotary International and the Bennington Catamount Rotary Club. Taste of Pownal

The fifth annual Taste of Pownal will be held Sunday, October 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Pownal Elementary School. The event features the culinary creations from dozens of Pownal kitchens. Visitors are welcome to taste and purchase a wide variety of foods, including breads, jams, jellies, relishes, cider, caramel apples and, of course, Pownal’s famous pies will be offered by the Pownal Historical Society. The Taste of Pownal also provides an opportunity to donate nonperishable foods and household items to the Pownal Food Pantry. The Taste of Pownal is open to local crafters as well. “Basically, if it’s made in Pownal, this is a great opportunity to show off,” said Peter Hopkins, the event organizer. “The Taste of Pownal has become a joyous celebration of Pownal kitchens and gardens,” said Hopkins. “Similar events are held in many other communities, but they have restaurants. We have no restaurants here in Pownal, but anyone who’s been to a church supper or potluck dinner here, knows that we have some extraordinary cooks.” Hopkins said there is still room for more vendors at the Taste of Pownal. Community Walk to Prevent Suicide

In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 16 minutes; that’s more than 33,000 lives lost each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute; with close to one million people attempting suicide annually. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults ages 18-65. Hoosick has seen two teen suicides this year. These events have touched the entire community, directly and indirectly. In an effort to prevent another tragedy, the family of Joe Sweeney is working with the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition to organize an Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Sunday, October 3. Walkers should gather in Wood Memorial Park where candles and ribbons will be distributed. The “Walk for Joe and Tyler” will begin at 6 p.m. It will travel north on Main Street, turn left on John Street, and then left on Church Street to the Main Street intersection. The walkers will then proceed back to Wood Park. Everyone is invited to St. Mark’s Church (adjacent to Wood Park) after the walk. St. Mark’s has generously offered to serve a free dinner to all participants. They will open the church and the church hall for fellowship and a time of sharing after the walk. There is no cost to participate. Donations are welcome and will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). These walks are held nationwide to raise money for AFSP’s vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, advocate for mental health issues, and assist survivors of suicide loss. Main Street Stage in North Adams announces today their fall production of “On the Verge,” by Eric Overmyer. The play previews Thursday, Friday and Saturday October 14, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. General admission is $10. Thursday, October 14 is “pay what you can” community night. The play will open Friday, October 22, and run Fridays and Saturdays through October 30. Extension Master Gardeners Plant Sale

The Bennington chapter of Extension Master Gardeners will be holding their Annual Fall Plant Sale on Saturday, October 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be held at the Walloomsac Farmers’ Market on the corner of River and Depot Streets in Bennington. Locally grown plants from members’ gardens, such as sedum, phlox, astilbe, daisies and rudbeckia will be offered at reasonable prices. Clothesline Work Party Joins Thousands of Events Across the Planet

On October 10, people across the planet will pick up hammers, shovels, and caulking-guns and join the 10/10/10 Global Work Party, the world’s largest day of practical action to fight the climate crisis. Organizers in Williamstown will be installing twenty clotheslines around town. Hanging clothes to dry reduces greenhouse gas emissions and saves money. Work crews will fan out across Williamstown throughout the afternoon. Sign up by October 3 for a free installation. The twenty slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Technical assistance will also be available to those who want to install their own clotheslines on 10/10/10. Organizers will be photo-documenting clothesline installations so let us know about your project. To sign up to have a work crew to install your clothesline, or to join the work party as a worker, contact Wendy Penner at wendypenner@hotmail.com, 413-458-4708, or go to www.coolwilliamstown.org to fill out an intake survey. Those interested in technical assistance installing their own clothesline or other line drying questions should contact Elizabeth Smith. Recognizing Lindy Linch in Donation

The Norshaft Lions donated $100 to Big Brothers Big Sisters to recognize Lindy Lynch and to wish her a speedy recovery. Lions President Kathy Whitman, left, and Phylis Porio, right, made the donation to BBBS Coordinator Nicole Pritikin to recognize the boundless energy that Lindy Lynch pours into making the greater Bennington area a wonderful community for us to live in and for tourists to visit. The Jubilee Library Series and The McCullough Free Library present “Food!” an afternoon dedicated to everything and anything about food, cooking, and eating, on Saturday, October 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The McCullough Free Library. The Jubilee Library Series is a non-profit collaborative project between two Bennington College Students and the McCullough Free Library in North Bennington, Vermont. The Series will consist of four free events to be held at the Library during the Fall of 2010. Each event, held on a Saturday afternoon, will be dedicated to one of four broad themes — Food, Reading, Listening, and Making. We strongly believe that these are topics that every person has their own unique and fascinating history and relationship with. All community members, of all ages, are invited to come to the events and share — this will include their stories, memories, skills, ideas, knowledge, and even physical examples. The series will serve as an opportunity for people to contribute and discover information about their neighbors, co-workers, customers, students, teachers, etc., that they simply do not get a chance to talk about in their daily and everyday lives. Participants are encouraged to bring a favorite or treasured recipe, which will be photographed and compiled into a community recipe book; their own food stories and memories, facts and knowledge about certain foods, and, if they are so inclined, a favorite dish to share. The event will include recipe exchanges, cooking demonstrations, food history and science, and interactive projects and activities. We hope to see you there! Annual Cow Plop and Car Show

St. Mary’s students and families are gearing up for the school’s annual Cow Plop and Car Show. Deeds are available at the school for $20 for a chance to win $1,000 if the cow “plops” in your square! The event is open to the public and being held at the Hoosick Falls Athletic Fields on Sunday, October 3 from noon to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Vendors are welcome. 4th Annual Blessings of the Animals

Animals of all denominations are invited to attend the fourth annual Blessings of the Animals service sponsored by the First United Church, Presbyterian, of Hoosick Falls, New York. The service will take place on Wednesday, October 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Village Park, rain or shine. The blessing of the animals celebrates the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals whose respect and affection for all living creatures is legendary and celebrated around the world. Everyone including spectators are welcome to attend this special service along with their dogs, cats, horses, goats, sheep, ducks, rabbits, birds, reptiles. It’s that time of year when the HFCS PTA gears up for their annual Fall Festival, now in its tenth year.
