An Open Letter to the Burr and Burton Board of Trustees We write this letter mindful of the financial challenges Burr and Burton Academy faces and respectful, as well as appreciative, of the educational opportunity BBA provides our children. Flood Brook Union School aspires to provide its students with the elementary equivalent of a BBA experience as we, as a School Board, struggle with how

to do so in a fiscally responsible manner. BBA’s announced tuition increase of 5.6% for FY11 contradicts the reality of the financial crises currently confronting Vermont as a state and most, if not all, Vermonters. While schools share many of the same issues, we can certainly appreciate that each school’s financial challenge may be unique. That the Flood Brook Union School Board is intent on doing its share: a budget increase is simply not an option. Burr and Burton Academy, as an independent school, is not subject to public scrutiny or a legislatively imposed tuition cap although 91% of BBA’s enrollment is publicly funded by tuitions paid by Vermonters. BBA’s tuition increase for FY10 of 6% compared with a 2.7% increase in statewide education spending was clearly out-ofstep. This increase was largely responsible for two of our towns, Londonderry and Peru, being in penalty for education property tax purposes. A further increase in FY11, particularly in light of growing pressures on school boards to continue to discipline spending, will be similarly outof-step. We respectfully request BBA to reconsider its announced tuition increase for FY11. We urge BBA to do whatever is necessary to set an FY11 tuition that is, at most, no higher than FY10’s tuition. Church Service Cancellation

The West Arlington methodist Church, known as “Chapel on the Green,” will be closed during the winter. There will be no services the last Sunday of the months of January, February or March. The church will re-open on Easter Sunday, April 4. The service will be held at 7 p.m. as usual. There will not be a pot-luck supper that evening. K of C Breakfast

The Knights of Columbus will host their monthly breakfast on Sunday, February 14 in the St. Paul’s Parish Hall after the 8 and 10 a.m. Masses. Juice, scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon and sausage will be served. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 6 and under. Funds generated from the breakfast will support the Knights’ charitable works.

Grant Funding Opportunities

The Vermont-New Hampshire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is proud to announce the availability of grant funds for 2010-2011. Grants will be made to support efforts that attempt to reduce breast cancer rate disparities between and among communities in Vermont and New Hampshire. Based on a community needs assessment, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has identified the three following funding priority areas: 1. Increase the number of providers and health care centers that apply for Susan G. Komen for the Cure funding and utilize Susan G. Komen resources to improve early detection services. 2. Increase access to early detection and treatment programs among minority women in urban areas. 3. Increase awareness of the number of screening facilities in Hillsborough, Carroll and Grafton counties of New Hampshire and Chittenden, Caledonia and Windham counties in Vermont. ‘Moms Day Off’ Breast Cancer Beneﬁt

On Friday, February 5, Bromley Mountain will be sponsoring their eighth annual “Mom’s Day Off ” fundraiser to benefit the Vermont-New Hampshire Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen For the Cure. The idea behind “Mom’s Day Off ” is simple. For $15, moms can ski or ride Bromley for the full day when they show the ticket seller a snapshot of their kids. Bromley, in turn, donates the entire $15 to Komen’s VTNH Affiliate (the Race for the Cure people). “Over the past seven years, this event has raised just shy of $30,000,” says Bromley’s President, Rich Wiseman. “Last year was my first Mom’s Day Off and I have to tell you, it was an incredibly moving day. The energy was amazing, and we raised a record $5,500. We’d love to break that record this year.” Bromley is also a sponsor of the annual Komen VT/NH Race for the Cure, held each year in July at the Hildene Meadows, in Manchester (this year’s Race will be on Saturday, July 17). Scholarship Applications for Award for Excellence are Now Available

The Rotary Club of Manchester will make a substantial financial award available to deserving young men and women who wish to continue their education beyond the high school level. Eligible students are those who live in the area served by the Manchester Rotary Club. Towns include Arlington, Dorset, Landgrove, Manchester, Pawlet, Peru, Rupert, Sandgate, and Sunderland. Awards are for students who attend Burr and Burton Academy, Long Trail School, and Arlington High School. Criteria for selection include character, effort, grades, community service, and financial need. The typical award will be up to $1,000 per year toward the cost of an accredited program: a maximum of $4,000 for a four year college program, and $2,000 for a two year program. The committee may elect to consider other education oriented programs for inclusion in this program. Non-traditional programs will be considered on an individual basis. Every application will receive serious consideration. Applications for the Manchester Rotary Awards to be awarded to 2010 graduates are now available through each high school guidance department. From My Corner — by Susan J. Coons I’m going to be raffling off a piece of furniture that I painted to benefit women and children in Haiti who have suffered amputations, without the benefit of anesthesia. Tens of thousands of organizations, schools, church groups, and more here in America and around the world are moving forward with humanitarian help for earthquake victims in that country. But helping out comes with a cost in our own country. The cost of criticism. Yes, we should help Americans. Yes, our schools need funds. Yes, there are amputees and burn victims here. Yes, yes, and yes. However, here in America we have systems in place to get help for those who are destitute. Unfortunately, it takes a disaster for us to act. I didn’t think about raffling off this piece of art before now. I could have done it two years ago to benefit the Shriners’ Burn Hospital. I just didn’t think of it. We are a generous nation, and we can’t seem to stop ourselves. There are humanitarian organizations throughout the world staffed with hard-working, optimistic people who see the good in humanity. And that’s where we all must keep looking. We donate turkeys and food at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but what about the rest of the year? When the ship is in tumultuous waters, you must stand on deck and keep your gaze focused on the horizon. Once you let your head drop you will become very ill. And I think the same kind of focus applies to your job, your family, politics, and just about everything else in life. ________________________________________________

Mount Laurel Foundation Financial Aid Grants

The Mount Laurel Foundation is announcing that applications for financial aid are now available for 2010. Mount Laurel had its origins as the Mount Laurel School, which was founded in the late 50’s to serve children in Bennington and Rutland Counties who needed special education services that were unavailable in their local schools. For many years, Manchester, Vermont had one of the finest special education schools in New England. In time, those programs were incorporated in the local school systems, and Mount Laurel closed as an educational facility. Mount Laurel’s mission in serving the mentally challenged youth of our area, however, has continued as a charitable foundation. Now, the Mount Laurel Foundation’s mission is to promote the welfare of mentally and developmentally disabled children and eligible young adults in the Bennington-Rutland Counties area by contributing to the funding of specific projects for appropriate educational, recreational, and support organizations and programs. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide grants for individuals. Grant applications from the Mount Laurel Foundation, Inc. are now available and are being accepted until April 2, 2010. ‘Arts for Living’ Series

Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning and the Southern Vermont Arts Center have partnered to offer the 2010 Arts for Living Series which begins with two slide lectures presented by Dr. Russ Housman. On Tuesday, February 9 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Dr. Housman will present “Be My Valentine – A Celebration of Women Artists.” The serious creative contributions of women to the history of art are often ignored or negated. This slide lecture will extol the contributions and virtues of a number of women artists including: Nevelson, O’Keeffe, Bonheur, Kollwitz, Mitchell and as many other artists as time will allow. On Tuesday, February 23 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the presentation will look at noted African-American artists, their friends and the influences they had on each other and on the world of art in The Color of Black – Black Artists and Friends. Among the many artists presented will be Jake Lawrence, Bob Gwathmey, Hale Woodruff, Larry Rivers, Jules Olitsky, Henry Tanner, Thomas Eakins and the Spiral. Many of the artists that will be covered in this lecture were personal friends of Dr. Housman so sidebars and anecdotes will be sprinkled throughout the lecture. Dr. Russ Housman is a past member of the Chautauqua Art Institute and the Silvermine Guild of Art, he’s taught art at both Adelphi and Hofstra Universities and is Professor Emeritus of the State University of New York. Both presentations will take place in the Madeira Education Center on the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s campus. Dillon Hawley Receives $10,000 Scholarship

Arlington Memorial High School senior Dillon Hawley was awarded a $10,000 college scholarship from The Jewish Guild for the Blind Guild Scholar Program. Hawley was one of only 16 legally blind students nationwide, and the only senior in Vermont, to receive the scholarship. The Jewish Guild for the Blind is a not-for-profit, nonsectarian agency serving persons of all ages who are visually impaired, blind and multi-disabled. The recipients were chosen by a selection committee who considered criteria such as academic excellence, community involvement, legal blindness and citizenship. A member of the National Honor Society, Hawley has received ��

Academic Excellence Awards in Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-calculus and English. He has also received numerous honors in music and band having been named to the Green Mountain District Chorus twice and performing at the All-State Music Festival and All-New England Music Festival on five different occasions. In addition, Hawley is a four-year member of the AMHS Varsity Theatre troupe, a four-year member of the Varsity Cross-Country team and has been elected twice as a class officer. Arlington Principal Kerry Csizmesia congratulated Hawley on his award. “Dillon is an amazing student who excels in everything he chooses to do. Whether it’s his academics, his music or his running, Dillon cares deeply about doing his best.” President and CEO of The Guild, Dr. Alan R. Morse noted that the program’s mission included assisting students with a successful transition from high school to college. “We’re not concerned with their fields of study, but we are eager to help in the education of this country’s next generation of leaders, a group that must include persons with vision impairment.” Hawley, who is interested in pursuing a career in math and science, has applied to several universities including Yale, Temple and Northeastern. Chester Rotary Club Sends Help to Haiti Disaster Victims

As everyone is keenly aware, on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a major earthquake caused death, disaster and devastation in the country of Haiti. Homes and buildings were toppled or damaged as a result of this act of nature. A massive relief effort is underway to help the people survive until they can rebuild their lives. “Sitting home in my warm house with food and water and shelter from the elements, I thought we must do something to help these poor people,”said Ed Knapp, President of the Chester Rotary Club of Chester, Vermont. Within two hours, the club’s Board of Directors approved the funding necessary to purchase a Shelter Box for Haiti. Shelter Box is a nonprofit disaster relief organization sponsored by Rotary clubs world wide and Rotary International. The Shelter Box contains supplies to help up to ten people for six months with a large tent, a stove, pots, eating utensils, rope, tool kit, sleeping mats, blankets, water containers and more. The Shelter Box is delivered directly to the people who need the help and can be tracked by the purchaser to see who actually received the box. Each box costs $775.00. While arrangements were being made for the purchase, Knapp contacted the Rotary District Governor, Michael Swinford of Rotary district 7870 and Assistant Governor Sally Sugarman of Area 11 requesting district funding to purchase a second Shelter Box. Sugarman, in turn, contacted all of the Rotary Club Presidents in Area 11 to see if they could add to the purchase. 50th Anniversary

Earl and Jacqueline LaBatt of Arlington, Vermont, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 14, 2009. On November 28, 2009, an anniversary Mass was celebrated at St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Arlington, Vermont, by Mrs. LaBatt’s brother, Reverend Thomas Lopes, of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, and Reverend Thomas Mattison of Christ Our Savior Parish. After the Mass, a reception was held at Mount Anthony Country Club in Bennington, Vermont, hosted by their six children and their spouses. Friends and relatives attending came from Vermont, New York New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland and Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. LaBatt were married November 14, 1959 on Martha’s Vineyard Island in St.Augustine’s Parish,Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. Junior Youth Group and Souper Bowl

The Junior Youth Group from the Federated Church of East Arlington is ready to join the nation’s largest youth-led weekend of giving and serving by collecting money for the Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday, February 7. This will be the Jr. Youth Group’s third year of participating in the nation-wide event, which raised $10.2 million dollars last year to fight hunger and poverty in communities across the nation. Last year the group collected $208 and donated the amount to the Arlington Food Shelf. The Arlington Food Shelf is one of the beneficiaries of all the funds collected throughout the year by the Youth Group, so they are especially happy to be participating in the Souper Bowl event again this year. The Youth Group will be holding pots and pans outside the Federated Church on February 7 and will also be collecting after the 10 a.m. service. The Federated Church is located on 102 Ice Pond Road, in East Arlington. Church services are held at 10 a.m. with Sunday school and nursery available each Sunday. Maple Street School and Long Trail School Partner with TAP Maple Street School and Long Trail School have entered into a partnership with Chittenden Central Supervisory Union to begin a Southern Vermont chapter of TAP, a Teacher Apprentice Program. The Teacher Apprenticeship Program (TAP) is a program developed to assist qualified individuals to attain teaching licensure in Vermont through the state-approved Peer Review Process. The one-semester experience consists of a mentored student teaching internship and a series of seminars leading to middle-level or 7-12 licensure. Senior Whole Health CEO Offers Up Ideas on Healthcare Costs

John Baackes, chief executive officer of Senior Whole Health (SWH), which operates plans for dual-eligible beneficiaries in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York, will speak on “How to Pay for Healthcare” at Southern Vermont College on Thursday, January 28, at 2:45 p.m. in the Everett Theatre. This lecture, free and open to the public, will be of value to anyone participating in the healthcare system and will be of special interest to those working in the field. A reception will follow in the College’s Burgdorff Gallery. As national debate on healthcare reform continues and Congressional bills take shape, this lecture will examine the different alternative reimbursement methodologies and how they can influence overall costs, utilization of services, patterns of care, provider organization structures and cost to patients. Baackes, a preeminent advocate of helping to keep healthcare affordable for all, will also discuss the incentives inherent in the various models that are beneficial to each party and the prevailing trends. “Whatever change is adopted will influence the future of careers in medical care,” Baackes notes. Waterwheel House Quilt Shop in Londonderry Vermont Joins Nationwide ‘1 Million Pillowcase Challenge’, Beneﬁting Local Charities.

American Patchwork & Quilting magazine is challenging quilters, crafters and sewers across the country to Make a Pillowcase, Make a Difference. Local quilting enthusiasts will join the cause to help reach the goal of making and donating one million pillowcases to benefit local charities. Every pillowcase can make a difference in our community. A pillowcase can provide comfort for a cancer patient, hope for a foster child, encouragement for a battered woman, or beauty for a nursing home patient. Hosting pillowcase events locally will be Waterwheel House Quilt Shop located at 6795 Route 100 between Londonderry and Weston. Throughout 2010, quilters, crafters and sewers across the nation will make pillowcases at their local quilt shops. The shops will then collect the pillowcases and donate them to a local charity of their choice and update the pillowcase counter at allpeoplequilt.com/millionpillowcases. The counter will track nationwide progress toward the goal of one million pillowcases. Shelley Sas, owner of Waterwheel House Quilt Shop, sees the One Million Pillowcase Challenge as a way to give back to the local community. “We have so much beautiful fabric here at the shop and we are happy to donate fabric to any quilter,crafter or sewer who participates in the challenge,” she says. Waterwheel House Quilt Shop had their first official “Pillowcase Making Event” on Friday, January 15. This was a free event and the shop attracted eight sewers. The group made 25 pillowcases in three hours. There were prizes and refreshments. The shop goal is to make 300 pillow cases this year. The next pillowcase event is scheduled for Friday, February 19 from 1-4 p.m. Free patterns and fabric will be provided. Sewers may use one of the shop’s six sewing machines. The event is limited to 12 sewers so please call to register. Call 802-824-5700. The March Pillowcase Event is scheduled for Friday, March 18. Make a pillowcase, make a difference. For those sewers who cannot attend this event, the shop is taking pillowcase donations at the shop during regular business hours. African Drum Making at Long Trail School Long Trail School art students spent three days with the potters from East Dorset’s Turning Wheel Studio as they created Udu drums from clay, inspired by the Nigerian vessels which produce a stunning sound. Teri Gotgart and Derek Andersen showed examples of traditional Udu drums, and gave demonstrations on different techniques while students designed and created their own drums. Traditionally, Udu drums are made with clay and are built so as to have an open chamber for air to move around, an elongated neck, and two holes cut out of the clay in order to produce the unusual sound.

Students in grades 6-12 showed great skill, imagination, and creativity as theymsculpted relief animals and symbols on the outside, and used sqraffito to carve designs directly into the glaze. This wonderful opportunity to incorporate art and music components will culminate with a second Artist in Residency later in the year when the African drumming group BloodDrumSpirit will spend three days teaching drumming and rhythm at Long Trail. Students will make music with BloodDrumSpirit by using their handmade Udu drums. Long Trail School is grateful to the Southern Vermont Art Center for funding this enriching experience through the Jonathan Levin Scholarship for the Arts grant.

Robert Stearns Named General Manager of Manchester Country Club

Robert Stearns, Head Professional of the Manchester Country Club in Manchester, Vermont, has been named to the additional post of General Manager, it was announced today by Rudy Weaver, President of the Club. In making the announcement, Mr. Weaver noted that the Club’s Board of Directors had unanimously chosen Bob, who has been head Pro of the Club for 17 years, for this new position of responsibility because of “his management experience and the superb job he’s done for our members during his tenure as Head Pro”. “This is a crucial position for our club and its members” said Mr. Weaver. “We think Bob is the ideal professional to bring new ideas and structure to our already exceptional Club, and we are delighted that he has accepted our offer.” Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Stearns said that one of his key goals would be increasing membership at the Club. “If you have an interest in joining Manchester Country Club,” he said, “please call me at 802-282-3003 or e-mail me at proshop@mccvt.com.” Bob started his golf career in 1984 after a 10-year career in retail management. Arlington Masons Maintain Ice Rink

The members of Red Mountain Masonic Lodge of Arlington are once again maintaining the ice skating rink on Route 313 at the southern end of the Arlington Recreation Park, as the weather permits. The rink has been flooded and is in excellent condition, thanks to the very cold weather. Snow will be cleared and the ice resurfaced as needed, and as Lodge members are available. New Year, New Plans at Equinox Terrace

What’s changing at the Terrace in 2010? Executive Director Mary Ellen Dunham met with Terrace residents recently to discuss plans and possibilities for the future. After her presentation to the entire group and some lively responses from residents, she spoke briefly with many individuals to listen to their remarks and concerns. Some changes have already been made or are in progress, including a full-time concierge, a suggestion box, a residents’ council, and discussion groups focused on particular interests. One far-out possibility — perhaps not so far-out after all — might be a computer center, where residents could keep up with their loved ones by e-mail, or investigate the resources of the Internet. Also proposed are the inclusion in the menu of residents’ best-loved recipes from home, enhanced outdoor activities and excursions, and various ways to draw on the wealth of skills and experience possessed by residents.

SPORTS Maple Street School Basketball

The Maple Street School girls’ basketball team is 1-2 for the season and thus far, the MSS boys’ record is 0-2. This past week, Maple Street dropped two decisions to Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon in Manchester. The Sacred Heart girls topped Maple Street by a 40-20 score. Eighth grader Lily Shaw led the scoring for Maple Street with nine points, while seventh grader Lucy Bisselle chipped in eight. The Sacred Heart boys breezed to a 34-10 decision over the Maple Street boys in the second game. The Maple Street School Moose are next in action at home on Wednesday, January 27 against the Mountain School of Winhall. Wounded Warrior Weekend at Bromley

On Friday, January 29 through Sunday, January 31, Bromley Mountain proudly hosts its annual “Wounded Warrior Weekend,” when Wounded Warriors — disabled American veterans of recent conflicts — from up and down the east coast are honored for their service and sacrifice and treated to an all-expenses paid weekend of adaptive skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing, courtesy of the Bart J. Ruggiere Adaptive Sports Center at Bromley Mountain. In addition to a few hospital-free days on the slopes with friends and family, the Warriors will be feted at a special benefit dinner on Saturday evening, January 30, in the Wild Boar Tavern in the Bromley Base Lodge. This year’s dinner is sold out, but the public is invited to join the group at 8:00 p.m. for cocktails (cash bar), dancing to a live band, an excellent silent auction and 50/50 raffle. All proceeds will benefit the work of the Bart Center, which sponsors year-round adaptive programs for the disabled. More information on the Bart J. 6th Annual Caregivers Workshop

Rutland Regional Medical Center, Southwest Vermont Council on Aging, and The Rutland County Caregiver Coalition present the sixth Annual “Caregivers Workshop-Share the Joys, Manage the Burdens.” This interactive workshop is open to anyone helping to care for any aging, disabled, or chronically ill family member, friend, neighbor, or client. Communication is one of the primary focuses of this workshop, what to say, how to say it without offending someone and how to effectively listen when spoken to. Curves of Manchester Celebrates Milestone

Curves of Manchester is celebrating a major milestone in the local fitness center’s history, thanks to the hard work and dedication of not only its staff, but also, its members. Essayists Celebrated at Hildene

��

Hildene invites the community to celebrate Lincoln’s birthday and congratulate the winners of this year’s Lincoln Essay Competition on Saturday, January 30 at noon in the Colonnade Room of the Equinox Resort. The first, second and third place winners of the 2009 competition for eighth graders will present their speeches at the fourth annual Lincoln’s Birthday Luncheon. The keynote address will be delivered by Charlie Smith of the Snelling Center for Government. Smith will discuss the importance of good governance and civic responsibility, both practiced by Abraham Lincoln, and how important it is for young people to cultivate these skills today. All eight winners will receive their awards: $1,000, First Prize; $750, Second Prize; $500 Third Prize and $200 each, Honorable Mention. On the following day Executive Director Seth Bongartz and Deputy Director Laine Akiyama will travel to Providence, Rhode Island to attend a similar event there honoring winners of the Lincoln Essay Competition, held for the first time in that state. When Bongartz announced the expansion of the competition to “The Ocean State” he noted that, “The success of the past three years of the contest, begun with Bennington County students in 2007 and taken statewide in 2009, laid the foundation for further broadening the reach with a new cosponsored Hildene-Brown Essay Competition this year. This annual challenge to eighth grade students in Vermont and now Providence, Rhode Island, fits squarely within Hildene’s mission to advance the Lincoln legacy through education, commitment to community and active stewardship of the family’s home and land.” Reservations for Lincoln’s Birthday Luncheon are required and cost $40 per person. The holiday rush is over and the Manchester Health Services’ Thrift Shop is ready to have a Bag Sale to clear the winter merchandise and prepare for spring. The Bag Sale will be held on January 27 and 28 to include half price on all red tags in the barn. The shop will be closed on Friday, January 29, Monday and Tuesday, February 1 and 2. The shop will re-open on February 3 at 11 a.m. with all new spring and summer stock. Don’t forget the raffle for Valentine’s Day. The drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m. on February 12. Junior Snow Rangers Wanted!

Spend the February school vacation learning, exploring and discovering the winter world on the Equinox Preserve! Join the staff of the Manchester office of the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) for this series of mini-camps. Each afternoon will feature a different theme, from snow studies and tracking to how animals adapt to the cold and snow. Registration options are flexible: from one or two days to all five days and official certification as a Junior Snow Ranger. Liam is a 10 year old male ChihuahuaPomeranian mix who came to SCAC because his rescuers could not afford his medical care. They had removed Liam from a house where he had been beaten. Because of this, Liam has some fear issues, is timid and needs to warm up to new people slowly. SCAC has been the most safe and stable environment that Liam has ever known and in turn, he has made great improvements on his health. A sensitive soul, Liam reacts to any kind of negativity and will need very understanding and gentle new parents. He is the sweetest little guy who has a lot of love in his heart and also has a great capacity to grow into the dog that he wants and deserves to be. We recommend an adult only home where Liam can relax, be spoiled and enjoy life. Cats are fine and other dogs may be possible upon introduction. SVAC’s Teddy Bear Tea Party Looms

The Southern Vermont Arts Center’s second annual Teddy Bear Tea Party takes place at the Arts Center on Saturday, February 13, from 2-4 p.m. Partygoers are invited to bring a well-loved teddy bear (or doll or other stuffed animal) and both are encouraged to “dress up” for the occasion in their best tea finery. In addition to enjoying tea, juice, sandwiches and sweets, the kids will participate in a variety of activities, including crafts and stories. There will also be time for adults and children to walk around Yester House Gallery and take in the February Exhibition. Reservations are required as space is limited. SVAC Acquires F. B. DeHaven Oil Painting

Christopher Madkour, Executive Director of the Southern Vermont Arts Center, has announced the Arts Center’s acquisition of Sunset, a 24” x 30” oil on canvas painting by the noted American tonalist painter, Franklin Benjamin DeHaven (1856-1934). The painting, in its original ornate gesso and gilt frame, furthers the mission of SVAC’s permanent collection, which is to collect representative pieces with a strong focus on American Regionalism; it will be on display in Yester House Gallery until it is removed to the Arts Center’s permanent collection in the Wilson Museum. Sunset was a gift from former Dorset resident and longtime friend of the Arts Center, Jane Escher. Ms. Escher, who now resides in New Jersey with her son, Ben, noted that the painting had been in her family since it was purchased by her Grandfather in the late 1920s. “The Arts Center was kind enough to store a few paintings for me over the years, and this is just such a beautiful painting,” she said, “that I wanted them to have it.” “Jane is very generous. DeHaven is considered by many to be a very undervalued artist and, because of that, his paintings are sought after by collectors for their strong investment potential… and this really is an excellent piece, very likely done in the late 1800s,” said Madkour. “DeHaven was known for his remarkable draftsmanship and his ability to invoke the grandeur of nature, and Sunset is a stunning testament to those talents.” The Southern Vermont Arts Center, an educational non-profit institution supported by membership and tax-deductible donations, is off West Road in Manchester, Vermont, and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays, February 14 and 21 from noon to 5 p.m. Visit any time at svac.org. The Battenkill Chorale, with art director Janet McGhee, is accepting experienced choral singers for their May 1 performance of Carl Orff ’s Carmina Burana in the new Zankel Music Center at Skidmore College. In collaboration with the Skidmore College Community Chorus, the combined 250-voice choir will be joined by baritone Keith Kibler, soprano Gene Marie Callahan, and the Saratoga Children’s Chorus (Susan Hermance Fedak, director) for this choral debut in the 600-seat Helen Ladd Concert Hall in Zankel Music Center. The Battenkill Chorale has open enrollment, with auditions for vocal placement and solos only. Singers should be experienced choral singers possessing good sight-reading skills and vocal technique.
