OUR READERS’ LETTERS ...why not now...

Someday the Vermont Yankee (VY) nuclear power plant will be closed and decommissioned, why not NOW? Why not NOW while the price of electricity from other suppliers is at historic lows. Why not NOW while Vermonters have overwhelmingly expressed their preference — in Department of Public Service polls — for replacing VY’s nuclear energy with renewable, local resources (solar, wind, small hydro, and biomass). Why not NOW when Vermont’s political leaders are increasingly demonstrating the political will to face this critical issue. Why not NOW — before leaking radioactive mishaps become disasters, increasing the health risks for New Englanders and vastly increasing the costs of decommissioning the plant. Why not NOW before the current out-of-state owners take all the profits and leave us with the liabilities. Why not NOW when the misstatements of Entergy’s corporate executives have shown their lack of respect for Vermont’s regulators and protective laws. Now is the time and we need all of our legislators — Republicans, Democrats, Progressives, and Independents — to do the

Lt .Col. Louis C. Leone has retired from the U.S. Army after more than 24 years of honorable military service. During his retirement ceremony at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., the lieutenant colonel was decorated with the Legion of Merit Medal by the U.S. Army Chief of the Office of Latin America, Europe/Eurasia, and Africa Analysis. The Legion of Merit Medal, the nation’s fifth highest, is awarded to members of all the U.S. Armed

Forces for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. The performance must have been such as to merit recognition of key individuals for service rendered in a clearly exceptional manner. Prior to retiring, Leone served as the senior intelligence analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. He received a commission of second lieutenant in 1985 through the Army ROTC program as a distinguished military graduate and received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick. The lieutenant colonel has served as an artillery officer in a variety of command, staff and fire support positions at every level from platoon to field artillery before becoming a foreign area officer specializing in Western Europe in 2002. During his military career, he served at military installations that included Fort Riley, Kansas, Greece, Fort Stewart, Georgia, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Fort Hood, Texas, Monterey, California, Madrid, Spain, and a deployment to Baghdad, Iraq. He served in the Executive Support Operation and senior intelligence analyst for Greece and Cyprus in the Officer of Latin America, Europe/ Eurasia, and Africa Analysis of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

— by Susan J. Coons ...sick and tired... I’m sick and tired of seeing the long faces of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. I’m sick and tired of the long, pinched face of John Boener and the arrogance of Mitch McConnell. I’m sick and tired of seeing four male politicians (Republicans and Democrats) shuffle lock-step and shoulder to shoulder up to a microphone to make a statement, blaming the other side for inaction, with all of their cronies standing on the steps in the background behind them. Presently, the Senate is not there to look out for your job or mine, they’re looking out for their own job. They aren’t interested in better health care for you, they want to keep their own health care. The Democrats were elected to do something and instead they’re sitting on their hands! I’m sick and tired of it! I’m sick and tired of talk show tirades. I’m sick and tired of outrageously stupid accusations made by people who have no helpful solutions to the problems we face. I’m sick and tired of talking heads twisting the truth and passing it off as news. I’m sick and tired of talk show hosts from the extreme left to the extreme right recklessly spewing their chatter without responsibility for what they are saying. Politicians hire ghost writers to write books that would never pass a fact check and make millions of dollars appealing to the anger and fear of uninformed Americans. If a lie is repeated often enough, does it become the truth

just because many people believe it? If the lie is packaged in fear and loathing, does that make it more attractive? Why do we stop to look at an accident? Think about that. What have we become? Freedom of speech is a privilege and it comes with responsibility. Especially in the electronic media. It’s against the law to stand up in a theater and yell, “FIRE!” Yet that’s what these fear mongers do day after day, screaming fear of the government, and polarizing Americans against one another depending on race, gender, ethnicity, geography and income. Words are recklessly thrown around without regard to the strength of those very words. Words like Socialist, Marxist, unAmerican. The amazing foolishness of the prevalent rhetoric spewed forth reminds me of “Alice in Wonderland”, when the Queen of Hearts screams, “Off with their heads! Off with their heads,” for no reason, except that Alice was there. And the whole deck of cards was ready to go along with the Queen. I’m sick and tired of it, and I’m sick and tired of so many good people believing such rubbish (for want of a better more suitable word, and I’m sure you know what it is). This column is for entertainment purposes. It’s an outlet for me to share the funny things in life with you. But, like most of you, I have become very frustrated with Washington, D.C. I have utmost respect for anyone’s opinion as long as it’s informed. For Senators to simply do nothing is not why any of us voted for them, Republican or Democrat. I’m going to send a copy of this column to my Senator, my Congressman, and the President. Susanism: Always keep the Poligrip in a warm place during winter months. Otherwise you will need a caulk gun to apply it to your denture in the morning.

Love Your Library, Love Yourself

February is Library Lover’s Month. During the month, Ellen Boyer, Director of the Mark Skinner Library: Manchester’s Public Library urges Manchester residents to treat themselves to a free library card and join the ranks of library lovers. “All Manchester residents are entitled to a free library card at Mark Skinner Library. Your library card is your ticket to opportunity,” said Boyer. “What other card in your wallet gives you free access to bestsellers, audiobooks, two downloadable audiobook services, magazines, movies and all sorts of other resources that can change your life, save you money – or just make it a little more fun?” Boyer notes that “free” doesn’t end with what you can borrow from Mark Skinner Library. “Entertaining and enriching programs for both children and adults are always free and open to the public at MSL” adds Boyer “as are the public access computers and Wifi.” Mark Skinner Library: Manchester’s Public Library is open Tuesday and Thursday, 10-6; Wednesday, 10-8; Friday and Saturday, 10-4. Valentine’s Day Concert at First Baptist Church

Vocalists Lindsay Dyett, Marietta Formanek, Geoffrey Hobin (from Louisville, Kentucky) and Jeffrey Linebeck and pianists Sara Krohn and Christopher Lewis will present a concert featuring the Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzes” Op. 52 and “Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes” Op. 65 on Sunday, February 14 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Manchester Center, Vermont. Brahms’ “Liebeslieder (Love Songs) Waltzes” consists of eighteen poems arranged for piano four-hands and vocal quartet, setting texts from George Friedrich Daumer’s Polydora. Brahms’ sketches suggest that he conceived the shape of the entire cycle before completing individual waltzes. Such was the popularity of this work, that Brahms set to work on another set of waltz texts shortly after their premiere — the “Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes.” Op. 65. A suggested donation of $10 will be collected at the door. A reception will follow. BBA Alumni Flying to Vancouver to Work at 2010 Winter Olympics

Local Burr & Burton Alumni and East Dorset resident Sarah Pinsonault will be flying off to Vancouver to work at the 2010 Winter Olympics on February 8. Sarah is one of 25 students chosen from all four of Johnson & Wales University’s campuses to intern at the Olympics. She will be working in Event Administration as well as interning under the direction of Cleanevent, the event and venue service arm of CE Property Services Group, which provides cleaning, waste management solutions, project management and logistics services to the leisure, sporting, event and entertainment sectors. Sarah will be graduating from Johnson & Wales University (Charlotte) in May with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Entertainment and Event Management. Sarah is the daughter of Danny and Sandy Pinsonault. _________________________________________________

‘Snug Under the Ice,’ Family Wildlife Program on Beavers

It may look like an untidy mound of frozen sticks and mud to us, but to the beaver, it’s home. Families, children and other nature lovers will get to examine one of these “pond penthouses” as part of a free wildlife adventure program Saturday, February 20 from 10 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. We’ll gather at 10 a.m. in the vestry of the United Church of Dorset where the program begins with a talk by Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department biologist Kim Royar on the private life of “North America’s largest rodent.” After a break for light snacks, those who wish may continue the adventure by bus to a local beaver habitat for a first-hand view of how the clever critters outwit winter. The beavers will be snug in their lodge, but human visitors are reminded to dress warmly. No registration is necessary; children must be accompanied by an adult. Boys & Girls Club of Rutland Open During Winter Break

The Boys & Girls Club of Rutland County will be open for youth ages 6-18 during winter break! Open times are February 16-19 (Tuesday through Friday) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Planned activities include special art activities, letter writing to our Peace Corps Pen Pal in Morocco, and a field trip to the Rutland Free Library to read “Tales to Tails” and to the Humane Society dogs. The junior and teen games rooms will be open along with the art room, computer lab and there will be daily trips to our Knights of Columbus gym. In addition, a light breakfast, lunch and snack is included with membership (only $15 for the rest of the school year) or daily drop-in fee ($1). 100 Percent of LTS Students Give to Annual Fund

Long Trail School very proudly announces that 100 percent of all students, faculty and staff participated in this year’s Annual Fund. Development Director Leslie Keefe commented,“this is truly a special accomplishment; I don’t know of any other educational organization in the area who has achieved such a goal!” She continued, “I’m so proud of the students and grateful for their support of the school.” In celebration, Long Trail threw an ice cream sundae party at which many Trustees of the school served ice cream. BBA Appoints New Dean of Faculty

Burr and Burton Academy Headmaster Mark Tashjian is very pleased to announce that Meg Kenny will be the next Dean of Faculty. She will succeed John Wright, who is retiring in June. Meg has been a member of the Social Studies Department since 1998 and has served as department chair since 2003. She is currently teaching College Preparatory World and U.S. History and U.S. History, World Cultures and Economics. Before coming to Burr and Burton Meg taught social studies at Manchester Elementary Middle School for two years and Shelburne Community School for five years. A graduate of St. Michael’s College, Meg is married to Todd Ameden and they have two sons: Jackson, 9 and Will, 3.

February14: Sunday at 8 p.m., “Nature” encores “In the Valley of the Wolves,” the dramatic saga of Yellowstone’s remarkable Druid wolf pack. At 9 p.m., “Masterpiece Classic” continues the Jane Austen films with “Northanger Abbey,” a gentle parody of gothic fiction. Romance addict Catherine Morland visits a country house that feeds her lurid fantasies. February 15: Monday at 7:30 p.m. on Vermont Public Television’s “Profile,” Fran Stoddard talks with Tom Bodette of Dummerston, Vermont, a humorist, NPR personality and author of fiction and travel books. The program will repeat Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., “Antiques Roadshow” sets up shop in Madison, Wisconsin, for three weeks of programs. Today, experts appraise an Art Deco charm bracelet, an heirloom Martin guitar and an angry letter from Frank Sinatra. From 9 p.m. to midnight, “The Kennedys: American Experience” tells a family saga of ambition, wealth, loyalty and tragedy. February 16: Tuesday at 9 p.m., the new season of Vermont Public Television’s “Emerging Science” continues. From tainted spinach to recalled hamburgers, the U.S. has seen health scares involving salmonella and other causes of food-borne illness. The program follows researchers who identify and track food pathogens. The University of Vermont’s Jane Hill explains pathogen migration and the work her lab is doing to prevent it. UVM scientists Catherine Donnelly and Paul Kindstedt contrast large scale and regional food production. Vermont state epidemiologist Patsy Kelso emphasizes consumer education in food safety. Ken Puzey of QuantaSpec Inc. in Burlington, Vermont, shows how his company is making strides in early detection of harmful bacteria. The program will also air February 21 at 1 p.m. At 9:30 p.m., the new series “Music Voyager” continues to explore world music. In this episode, host Jacob Edgar travels to northwestern India to look at Rajasthani gypsy music. February 17: Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., VPT repeats an episode of “Making Sense New England,” a series that explores how individuals and businesses in the region are coping in the economic downturn. The program looks at a case of investment fraud in Bennington, Vermont, and other stories. At 8 p.m., Henry Louis Gates Jr. investigates the family stories and ancestry of renowned Americans in his new series, “Faces of America.” Among those featured are chef Mario Batali, humorist Stephen Colbert and Jordan’s Queen Noor. February 18: Thursday at 8 p.m., this month’s episode of “Making Sense New England” looks at how the economic downturn is affecting northern New Englanders and how people are responding. The program is co-produced by Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont Public Television. VPT’s story looks at how remodeling can protect a homeowner’s investment, increase a home’s value and make it more livable. Visiting Artist at Flood Brook Students at Flood Brook School in Londonderry spent the last week in January working with artist Susan Leader, who visited the school to teach the art of working on the potter’s wheel. The excitement in the art room was high and the kids really did a great job working with our visiting potter. Susan Leader, who grew up in our area and perfected her craft through study and work with renowned village potters in Japan, has had her work featured in national publications. Her decorated country pottery is sold in fine craft shows and galleries. Her work with students is also exceptional. With amazing skill and good humor, Susan taught students from Kindergarten through eighth grade how to be successful on the potter’s wheel. During the course of the week students made hundreds of decorated mugs, plates and bowls. These will be glazed and fired over the next few weeks. While many will go home with students, a number will also be donated to the Empty Bowls, a fundraiser for Vermont families in need of food in these difficult times. Mountain School Hosts ‘Coffeehouse’ Fundraiser for Haiti

On Thursday, February 11 at 7 p.m., the middle school is hosting a special evening of music, coffee, and cocoa to raise awareness and funds for victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. Students have elicited the help of four local musicians, and will be playing some music of their own. Laura Molinelli has been playing the “local” scene for the past 15 years. With three self-produced albums of original material under her belt, she has just completed her fourth release, “Moon in the Hand of a Girl.” Currently, she performs as a solo artist and also as a member of the Southern Vermont-based bluegrass band, “The Bondville Boys.” “Acoustic Don’t Leave” consists of Lee Romano, Bill Muench, and Mike Meany. The band is beginning its 25th year as one of New England’s “Top Party Bands.” Phil Henry is a singer-songwriter and music educator in West Rutland, Vermont. He sings energetic contemporary folk originals, which resemble detailed four-minute short films, with diverse stories and leading characters. Misty Valley Books Offers New Sessions of French Language Courses

Misty Valley Books in Chester will again offer two levels of French classes beginning the week of February 22. The Learn French courses will run for six weeks, Level II on Mondays, beginning February 22, and Level I on Tuesdays, beginning February 23. Both courses are open to students high school age and older and will meet in the bookstore from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Instructor for the courses is Bill Reed, co-proprietor with his wife, Lynne, of Misty Valley Books, on the Chester Green next to the Fullerton Inn. A graduate of Yale University, he has taught in Africa, France and, for more than 35 years, in public and private schools and colleges in Vermont. Elizabeth Pietrucha, a graduating senior at Mount Anthony Union High School, has been named one of more than 3,000 candidates in the 2010 Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.2 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2010. Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 46th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. Candidates were selected for their exceptional performance on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment. Scholars will be invited to Washington, D.C., for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholars medallion at a recognition ceremony and to participate in events and activities with their elected representatives, educators, and other leading individuals in public life. Humanities Grant Funds Victorian Mystery Series

tery of its time. The Stevenson mystery has characters that are almost identical to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. The Leavenworth Case was one of the first mysteries written by a woman. The Hound of the Baskervilles is part of the canon of immensely influential Sherlock Holmes adventures. They are all 19th – or in the case of the Hound — early-20th-century mysteries that provided models for what was to come. Mysteries are now one of the most popular of genre literatures. Besides providing the image of the detective, these books also developed the narrative structure that was to be characteristic of the mystery novel. Along with discussing the mysteries themselves, speakers will also provide the social and historical context from which this new genre emerged. Both a reflection of their times and timeless, these books will offer pleasurable reading and new insights into detective fiction. (Continued on page 26) (Victorian Mysteries, cont.)

Victorian-era mysteries that shaped thousands of later suspense stories will be explored during a four-part book discussion series from April to June 2010. Victorian Roots of Mysteries will be held in the Rotary Room of the Bennington Free Library on April 11 and 25, May 16 and June 6. All programs begin at 2 p.m. The Vermont Humanities Council has made a grant to the Bennington Free Library to underwrite the series between April and early June. The series is a collaboration among the Baker Street Breakfast Club, a local Sherlock Holmes scion society, the Friends of the Bennington Free Library, and the Bennington Free Library. It is funded, in part, by the Vermont Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. On each Sunday a scholar will talk about and facilitate a discussion of one of the four books in the series. Copies of the series books will be available to borrow at the Bennington Free Library’s front desk by March 1. Green Mountain College Professor Receives Fulbright Grant

Thousands of years before the rise of the Incan Empire, an ancient people living along the Chilean coast took elaborate measures to mummify their dead. Entombed in the driest climate in the world, the Chinchorro mummies have survived the ages and are now the focus of intense scholarship. Among the questions: where did these shore dwellers obtain the clay and manganese used in the creation of their striking burial masks? John Van Hoesen, associate professor of geology and environmental studies at Green Mountain College, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to explore these mysteries. His work may answer questions about the behavior and migration patterns of the Chinchorro people who developed mummification techniques about 3,000 years before the Egyptians. “There is no manganese for approximately 60 kilometers beyond the burial sites, and most archeologists think the Chinchorro people didn’t travel beyond 40 kilometers,” he said. “Also, the source of the clay used to create the masks has not been discovered. This suggests that they moved beyond the 40 kilometer range to find these materials—or the original sources have since been buried or exhausted.” Van Hoesen will collaborate with Dr. Bernardo Arriaza, the Instituto de Alta Investigación, Universidad de Tarapacá and the San Miguel de Azapa Archaeological Museum to conduct research aimed at determining the extent of Chinchorro migration. During his stay in Chile scheduled for the spring of 2011, Van Housen will teach a course on GIS and involve students in his field research. He will also hold skill-based workshops at the Instituto de Alta Investigación focused on identifying

Sirsy to Perform at GNAT-TV’s ‘Black Fly Lounge’

GNAT-TV in conjunction with Chris Heins from the “Beyond Further Band” invite the public to a live taping of “Live at the Black Fly Lounge”. The Black Fly Lounge is a new GNAT-TV program featuring music of all genres including singers, songwriters and bands from around Vermont and New England. GNAT-TV will produce the program monthly at GNAT-TV studios located at 116D Lincoln Avenue in Manchester Center. Pot Roast Dinner at First Baptist Church, Manchester The Mary Martha Fellowship of the First Baptist Church of Manchester invites the community to attend their annual Pot Roast Dinner to be held on February 20 at 6 p.m. This hearty meal, which is served family style, includes pot roasted beef with mashed potatoes and homemade gravy, cheesecake or apple crisp for dessert with lots of other delicious side dishes. Arlington Eastern Star Meets

Red Mountain Chapter No. 41, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, February 10, 7 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge, 117 East Arlington Road, Arlington. Free Film Club at The Clark to Survey ‘What in the World is Going On?’

The Cinema Salon Film Club will resume free screenings and discussion at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Friday, February 12, at 4 p.m. The theme of this series featuring a different country or region in each session will be “What in the World is Going On?” Enjoy films on the Clark’s big screen with commentary and discussion led by Steve Satullo, film programmer for the Clark. Subsequent meetings will be held on February 26, March 12, March 26, and April 9, at 4 p.m. There is no charge to join the club and film screenings are free. Satullo, an independent film scholar who programs films at the Clark and writes the Cinema Salon blog, has selected representative feature films from Iran, China, and Africa, and will introduce them in the context of the directors’ careers and the nations’ film histories. The films of the first three sessions will be “Offside” (directed by Jafar Panahi, 2006, 92 min.) on February 12, “The World” (directed by Zhang Ke Jia, 2005, 143 min.) on February 26, and “Moolaadé” (directed by Ousmane Sembene, 2004, 124 min.) on March 12. The Cinema Salon Film Club is intended for interested viewers who approach film as a medium of engagement, who wish to grapple intellectually and emotionally with the serious art of film, and to find in world cinema a way of engaging with the world and extending one’s understanding and empathy for other cultures. Ideally the screenings will attract not just sophisticated film fans, but participants with particular interest or expertise in the region under discussion. February is Library Lover’s Month at Mark Skinner Library. Library Lovers’ Month is a month-long celebration of libraries. This is a time for everyone to recognize the important role libraries play in the cultural and economic success of local communities and the nation as a whole. In the current economic climate, Mark Skinner Library is more popular than ever! Whether they depend on the library for bestselling books, DVDs, audio books, magazines, entertaining and enriching programs, children’s storytimes or access to computers and the Internet, Manchester area residents are encouraged to show how much they love their local public library this month. On Saturday, February 13, little library lovers can make a valentine at the children’s department craft table and check out some of the library’s many Valentine’s Day books. Love the library and the animal kingdom? Attend Winter Animal Tracking on Saturday, February 20 at 10:30 a.m. Families with children ages 5 and up are invited to attend this exciting Super Saturday program presented by the Nature Museum at Grafton. Donate a book...or a whole shelf of books. Remember your library in your estate planning. Give to the library through your company’s matching program for charitable giving. You don’t have to be a public relations expert to promote your library. You just have to talk about your library. Here are some ways to do it: Attend local government meetings to urge legislators to invest in libraries as a vital community resource, one that will save substantial tax dollars in helping people of all ages to be more literate and productive. Support the library’s request for funding at Town Meeting, Saturday February 27. Write to your legislators and request that library service be viewed (and funded) as a necessary public service. Share your concern and support with friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. Encourage others to get involved. Write a letter to the editor of your newspapers or call in to a radio talk show to express your concern. Speak up for libraries at community groups that you belong to. Invite your librarian to talk about library services and needs. AAUW Public Talk

A service of Luxbrush Painting Company Educator and author Sally Sugarman will give a public talk on Children and the Changing Media. In her talk, she will be discussing to what degree different media may control or liberate children, the effects on our children as citizens and consumers, and adult reaction to each new media as children control it before the adults do. Ms. Sugarman taught Childhood Studies at Bennington College for 35 years, in addition to other subjects, and was the Director of the Early Childhood Center for twenty-five of those years. She continues to teach, write, and actively serve the community at the board level, currently as board president of the Oldcastle Theatre. Cosmic Geometry and Other Recent Prints by Sabra Field

Sabra Field, renowned Vermont artist, will have an exhibit of her recent prints at the Chaffee Art Center from February 12 through March 20. The opening reception is Friday, February 12 from 5-8 p.m. The exhibit includes Cosmic Geometry; the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone; the Pandora Suite; and prints of the Vermont landscape. Sabra Field has lived in New England for most of her life and has had her studio in East Barnard, Vermont for many years. She earned a B.A. from Middlebury College and received her M.A.T. from Wesleyan University. She has been the recipient of an honorary Doctorate from Middlebury College, and The Vermont Arts Council’s Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Sabra has been commissioned to create artwork for IBM, Vermont Governors, Dartmouth College, Vermont Law School, and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Activities for the Children During Winter Break

If you would like to keep the children busy during Winter Break, the Bennington Museum offers February Vacation Workshops from February 15 through February 19. Offering fun and educational activities, the daily programs run from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Designed with little people in mind (ages 6-10), the price per workshop is $15 per child per workshop for members and $20 per child per workshop for non-members. Learn how slaves escaped to freedom using songs and secret codes. Wrapping up the week, on Friday, February 19, play with paper. People have been making things out of paper for thousands of years! Forum on Small Business Ownership Offered at Southern Vermont College

A free forum on entrepreneurship and small business ownership will be offered at Southern Vermont College on Monday, February 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the College’s Everett Mansion. The forum is targeted towards aspiring individuals and small business owners from the southern Vermont region who are interested in exploring business ownership or seeking expansion ideas for a current business. The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Forum will include an informational panel of area professionals who work with small businesses, a keynote expert on social media marketing and takeaway resources. The College has organized this event in conjunction with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Vermont Small Business Development Center. Sponsors of the event include Chittenden Bank, offering business banking solutions and Bluehouse Group, offering Web site design, Internet marketing and database �� development for businesses large and small. President Barack Obama recently outlined plans to support small businesses in the coming months, including valuable tax credits and incentives. During National Entrepreneurship Week (February 20 to 27), the Forum is geared to show small business ownership as an enticing career option. The expert panel will discuss topics such as starting a new business, purchasing an existing business or owning a franchise, various forms of financing, legal issues and the mindset of an entrepreneur. Boshart has successfully passed all parts of the architectural licensing exam and has been duly licensed to practice architecture by the State of Vermont. Although there are varying ways to become a licensed architect in Vermont, for Greg this is the culmination of five years of college at Syracuse University, five years of apprenticeship, and 12 months of studying and test taking. Of particular note is that Greg passed all seven sections of the exam on his first try which according to the board that administers the test, is accomplished by only 4 percent of applicants. The licensing exam is administered in seven sections, taken separately and usually separated by weeks or months depending on the pace set by the test taker. The exams cover a broad range of subjects, from building systems, to structural considerations, to sustainable design issues, to construction contracts, to building design. The career of an architect is one of continued learning, personal development and growth. Whether learning about new building products, advanced techniques of construction, or learning how to best harness the dreams and goals of varied clients and projects, an architect is continually evolving as a person and as a professional. Grace Cottage Hospital Hosts Arthritis Exercise Class

A twice-a-week exercise class specially designed for those coping with arthritis will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 23 to March 30, 12:30-1:30 p.m., at Grace Cottage Hospital’s Community Wellness Center. Taught by Certified Arthritis Foundation Instructor Sandra Brodsky, the twice-a-week class will emphasize low-impact, gentle, joint-safe exercises designed to help decrease arthritis pain and relieve stiffness, while increasing flexibility and range of motion. These exercises were developed by physical therapists specifically for people with arthritis. Most exercises will be done while seated, with some standing exercises for those who are able. People with similar-type diseases, and anyone wishing to begin a low-impact exercise program, are encouraged to attend. Participants should check with their physicians before beginning this exercise program. The class costs $60. Pre-registration is required. The Vermont Dairy Industry Association (VDIA) proudly announces the availability of the 2010 Memorial Scholarship. Eligible students must attend the University of Vermont or Vermont Technical College and seek a degree in agricultural business, agricultural science, or a related field. The VDIA established this scholarship to further its commitment to the education of its members and the study of dairying in Vermont. Ski For Heat a Successful Event

Wild Wings Ski Touring Center was the venue on January 31 for the tenth annual Ski for Heat fundraiser, which benefits low-income families in the area with heating fuel assistance. Sponsored this year by Clark’s Quality Foods in Londonderry, the event brought in approximately $20,000 for the Shareheat fund at BROC. “This is such a heartwarming demonstration of how a community can rally together to help its neighbors,” said event founder Martha Robertson. “Wild Wings again very generously donated the use of its beautiful trails and facility to the many wonderful people who came to ski and snowshoe for the event.” Funds raised from Ski for Heat, as well as from the Blues Concert, donated by Bob Stannard & Friends and held earlier this month, benefit the Shareheat Fund at BROC. “Pam Shambo, of BROC, said the number of requests for help this year has been overwhelming,” said Robertson. “Thank goodness for the many thoughtful folks in the area who came out on Sunday; their efforts will make a difference in the lives of others.” The success of this year’s Ski for Heat is attributable to a combination of many individuals and local businesses. “I wish I could take the space to thank all those happy and hearty souls who made this possible. Spaghetti Dinner Big Success

On Tuesday, January 26, Maple Street School students, parents, faculty and alumni hosted a spaghetti supper fundraiser to benefit the victims of Haiti’s recent earthquake. Attendees went through 24 pounds of spaghetti and vats of sauce to help raise $1,960 for relief in Haiti. All proceeds were sent to UNICEF: Relief in Haiti, which promises that 100% of the funds will directly benefit the children of Haiti. Ana Rahona, from Save the Children, and Alez Bornstein, from the International Rescue Committee, spoke about their organizations and what they themselves were doing to aid in the Haitian relief effort. Maple Street School Wellness Day 2010

On Friday, January 29, Maple Street School held their second annual Wellness Day to kick-off health and wellness studies in all grades. One of our goals is to help our students understand and become more aware of the benefits of making healthy choices in their lives. The Maple Street School faculty and visiting presenters will be presenting material and teaching strategies in areas of nutrition, proper posture and injury prevention, dance and creative movement, personal hygiene and safety, yoga, stress management, tobacco awareness, dental health, social skills, and effective athletic participation. Along with the Maple Street School faculty, presenters were Maralise Boynton, LPN; Roseanne Dennan, Chiropractic physician at the Chiropractic Care Center; Laura Brown, a Yoga and Zumba instructor at the Stratton Mountain Sports Center; Beth Barclay, LCMHC, NCC, School Counselor at Manchester Elementary Middle School; Chris Cruz, Director of Athletics at Southern Vermont College, with students from the Sportsmanship Outreach Program. Figure Skating Exhibition at Riley Rink

The Northshire Figure Skating Club will perform an exhibition on February 10 from 5-6 p.m. at Riley Rink. Athletes will perform their competitive programs to a variety of musical numbers. The Northshire Figure Skating Club is a United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) sanctioned program in both learn-to-skate and freestyle skating. The Sixth Annual Southern Vermont Primitive Biathlon and Winter Shoot will be held on February 13 and 14 at the Skinner Hollow Farm on Route 7A in Manchester Vermont. This fun and challenging wilderness experience combines the endurance of snowshoeing with skills of muzzleloader target shooting. In addition to the Biathlon portion of the event, there will be our famous “Five Card Draw Shoot” as well as our “Off the Clock Woods Walk” and more. These events encourage everyone to get out and shoot without requiring snowshoes or running. In the primitive spirit of the event, many participants will attend in period dress providing an 18th century atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. The newly organized Southern Vermont Catamount Midget hockey team put out a good effort at their first game ever this past Saturday, January 30, at the Riley Rink in Manchester, but lost 7 to 1 to the Troy Midgets. Londonderry Rescue Squad Receives Grant for Critical Equipment

Thanks to a grant from Londonderry’s Thrifty Attic, the Londonderry Volunteer Rescue Squad (LVRS) has purchased two EZ-IO systems for its transporting ambulances. The EZ-IO system will enable LVRS personnel to gain intraosseous (IO) access and provide fluid resuscitation and medications to critical patients on whom it is difficult to obtain intravenous access. Challenging vascular access is a critical problem in 5-10 percent of all patients in pre-hospital and hospital settings. Vascular access is critical for some patients and with LVRS’ extensive coverage area and long hospital transport times, obtaining good access can make a big difference in the outcome of patients suffering from conditions such as shock, cardiac arrest, drug overdose, dehydration, diabetic coma, renal failure and altered states of consciousness when it may be difficult or impossible to find an accessible vein. Ambulance personnel cannot rely on central line access in the pre-hospital setting and intraosseous access has long been the primary alternative to failed IV access. The Thrifty Attic has a long history of supporting local organizations. LVRS is grateful for this support, as it has enabled the Squad to purchase and utilize equipment that may otherwise be unaffordable. LVRS serves the tri-mountain towns of Bondville, Jamaica, Landgrove, Londonderry, Peru, South Londonderry, Stratton, Weston, Windham, and Winhall.

The Historic Salem Courthouse Preservation Association Jailhouse Commission plans to offer jail tours beginning July 24 (the date of the Al Fresco dinner) through October. Quilt Auction Beneﬁts CHABHA

The Courthouse Community Center in Salem is currently selling raffle tickets for a beautiful recreation of a classic early American quilt. The red and white king size Irish Chain quilt was made by hand by Christine Brooks Corbett. Christine, formerly of Salem, is an award winning quilter who has had a varied career as a teacher, artisan and proprietor of quilt studios and galleries. She is currently the proprietor of Historic Village Quilts in New Castle, Delaware where she offers courses and displays her quilts which have been finished with freehand quilting. The quilt to be raffled was purchased at the Artisans Guild in Salem and then given to the CCC by an anonymous donor to be used for fund raising. Tickets are on sale at the CCC for $10 each or 3 for $25. All proceeds will benefit the CCC and the many worthy programs offered. Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is scheduled for Friday, February 12 though Monday, February 15. Bird watchers coast to coast are invited to take part in the in the 13th annual free count event. Tens of thousands of volunteers will be counting birds at their feeders, in their backyards, local parks, wildlife refuges and forests for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. Each checklist submitted by “citizen scientists” helps researchers learn more about how the birds are doing and how to protect them. Bird populations are always in flux. For example, last year’s GBBC data highlighted a huge southern invasion of Pine Siskins across much of the East. Participants counted 279,469 Pine Siskins on 18,528 checklists, as compared with the previous high of 38,977 birds on 4,069 checklists in 2005. Join the staff of the Manchester office of the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) for a fun event celebrating the Great Backyard Bird Count! VINS-Manchester, in collaboration with the Vermont Bird Place and Sky Watch, invites kids and parents to stop by the Vermont Bird Place store on Saturday, February 13 between 1 and 3 p.m. to build a hopper feeder for your backyard. All materials will be provided, including a bit of seed to get you started! Supplies will be limited, so be sure to arrive early. The Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint citizen science venture with National Audubon Society, Cornell Ornithology Lab and Bird Studies Canada. Winter Animal Tracking at MSL

On Saturday, February 20, Mark Skinner Library, Manchester’s Public Library, will present its Super Saturday Program, “Winter Animal Tracking.” Beginning at 10:30 a.m., Betsy Bennett Stacey from the Grafton Nature Museum will present activity stations and a slide program showing clues about winter animals. The animal track patterns will identify animals, show where they have been, and what they’ve been doing. This program is free and open to the public. This 60-minute program is geared for children 5 years old and up, as well as adults. Children must be accompanied and supervised by adult caregivers. New After School Art Classes at SVAC

New for 2010, the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Outreach Program is launching an ambitious series of After School Art Classes tailored to meet the needs, wants and abilities of children 4 to 12 years old. Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting on February 24 and 25 and will meet each Wednesday and Thursday in the Arts Center’s Joan Hay Madeira and Lew Madeira Education Center from 3:30 p.m.–4:45 p.m., through Wednesday, April 7. A complete course schedule with age guidelines, descriptions and dates is online at svac.org. Classes are $8 per class for children of SVAC members and $12 per for children of non-members. A 20 percent discount is given for registering more than two weeks ahead of the class date ($6.40/$9.60). Payment is due at time of registration. There are no refunds for cancellations, but students will receive a 50% credit that can be used toward future after school classes if they cancel with at least one week notice. Vermont & Beyond Celebrates 10 Years of Fine Art

Whether you’re just coming off the mountain or need some relief from “cabin fever,” come to the Weston Playhouse for the 10th annual “Vermont and Beyond” fine art exhibition, Presidents Weekend, February 13 and 14. The show will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The show features seasonal New England landscapes and other romantic images painted by seven area artists including: Diane Bell, Ann Cross, Maurie Harrington, Doris Ingram, Robert O’Brien, Robert Sydorowich and Marijke Westberg. The show will offer a demostration each day. The resulting paintings will be raffled with the proceeds going to the Londonderry Food Pantry and “Just Neighbors.” Come in and get to know these artists and enjoy all their fine art paintings. ‘Death of a Salesman’ at Fletcher Memorial Library

Granville Players

The Granville Players have announced that they will close out their 2009/2010 season with Ken Ludwig’s riotously funny comedy “Shakespeare in Hollywood.” In 1934, Broadway director Max Reinhardt, following a very successful run of Shakespeare’s masterpiece “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” was indeed made into a movie released by Warner Bros. in 1935 starring Dick Powell, Jimmy Cagney and Mickey Rooney as Puck. The movie also starred a young Olivia DeHaviland. “Shakespeare in Hollywood” is a very funny backstage look at the making of this movie, with Adam Holcomb as the great Jimmy Cagney, and Andrew Holcomb as Dick Powell. New to the Granville Players, Olivia Darnell (based on Olivia DeHaviland) is Julienne McCarthy from Poultney. Also in this wonderful cast is John Hirschliffe as Max Reinhardt, Ron Nagle as studio head Jack Warner, Brurnham Holmes as actor Joe E. Brown, his son Ken as Oberon, Amanda Sieman as Lydia Lansing (based on Jean Muir), Rebecca Coombs as gossip columnist and radio personality Louella Parsons, Barry Morris as Will Hays of the infamous Hays Commission, who made life difficult for many studios in the 1930s. Rounding out the cast are Kara �� Gutowski as Puck and John Macri as Mr. Warner’s yes-man, Daryl. �� Performances are February 11 �� through 13, at the high school auditorium.
