It’s time to move Vermont forward by passing the Marriage Equality bill to legalize civil marriage for same-gender couples. Eight years ago, civil unions finally recognized same-gender relationships but unfortunately still subordinated them to marriages. It is time to grant the same rights and benefits to same-gender couples that are afforded married heterosexual couples. The passage of the Marriage Equality bill harms no one, costs the state nothing; but non-passage of the bill disadvantages many. It is time to support and value all members of society and to give full civil legal rights to same-gender couples. I support the Marriage Equality Bill S.0115. I want to thank its sponsors, Peter Shumlin, John Campbell, and Clair Ayer, and

A group of us have been taking Latin dance lessons with Michael Rodriguez and we all have had the best time, met some new people and learned some new steps. First it was Brachata, then it was Salsa and now we are in the midst of learning the Tango. The wonderful thing about Michael is that all the proceeds will be given to the Manchester Community Food Cupboard. The lessons are held at Pink’s Alley on Wednesday nights and Nancy Lee who owns Pink’s Alley is gracious enough to give the space for free so that all of the money can be donated to a charity. Last year Michael was able to raise $14,000 dollars for charities, this is huge and he’s not even a Vermonter! This is a perfect example of one who moves here and decides that he wants to get involved with the community that he has come to join. Michael will be appearing on The Good News Show produced by Salley Gibney on April 14 at GNATV. Neighbor’s Pantry Grateful

The Neighbor’s Pantry of Londonderry would like to thank the Stratton Foundation for choosing our organization to receive an Urgent Need Grant. Serving as the local food shelf for Londonderry and surrounding communities, by design and intention the Pantry provides supplemental groceries once a month to those families in need. Founded in 1988, the Pantry is housed adjacent to the Thrifty Attic. The Pantry is staffed by volunteers from the Second Congregational Church of Londonderry, the First Baptist Church of South Londonderry, Old Parish Church of Weston, St. Joseph’s Chapel, the Windham Community Church and the Peru Congregational Church. In addition to an initial donation of $1500, this grant has a matching component. The Foundation will match dollar for dollar new contributions up to $1000. The Foundation grant was made in response to the unusual circumstances brought on by the economic crisis. The Neighbor’s Pantry has been hard pressed to meet the increased need for basic food supplies. When the challenge is met, the Pantry will have at least $3500 of additional funds. Spaghetti Supper in Sunderland

The Sunderland Elementary School third Grade class will be holding a spaghetti supper and silent auction on Friday, March 20 from 5:307:30 p.m. The Dinner will feature salad, spaghetti and meatballs and italian bread. Brownies and ice cream will be available for dessert. The cost will be $6/person or $3 for children 6-12. The Silent Auction will feature items for everyone, donated by local merchants. Pawlet Food Pantry

The Pawlet Community Church Food Pantry continues to be open on the fourth friday of each month and is open to all those in need in Pawlet, West Pawlet and Wells. Our Pantry is well stocked thanks to the generosity of our community. The Pawlet Post Office and the Pawlet Library have permanent food collection boxes and the Pawlet Town Offices had a food collection box on Election Day plus the many donations from families, organizations, banks and businesses in our area. These donations are supplements and add variety to our regular shelved food. Sometimes we receive wonderful gifts of fresh potatoes, onions and squash. In the coming months we are open on Friday, March 27, April 24, and May 27. The hours of the Food Pantry are 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We are located behind the old Parish House on Route 39. Going south it is a short block out of the center of Pawlet on the left, up an uphill driveway to a small red building. Weather permitting there will be a sign at the front of the property on these dates. On Thursday, March 26, Professor Brian Dirck will make the third �� presentation of the 2009 Winter History Series, speaking on “Lincoln �� the Lawyer.” In 2007 University of Illinois Press published Dirck’s book �� of the same name, Lincoln the Lawyer, in which the author discusses �� what the law did to and for Abraham Lincoln. Publisher’s Weekly’s review of the work applauds Dirck’s research saying, “Using the recently completed Lincoln Legal Papers Project, fourteen years of “unearthing every available primary source on Lincoln’s law practice,” history professor and author Dirck (Lincoln and Davis) applies corrections, unearth�� ing a more mundane, and more human, Lincoln. Dirck’s technique is �� to show more about Lincoln through everyday details … than more �� sensational stories.” �� Brian Dirck is a past presenter and given his expertise on Abraham �� Lincoln, Hildene is pleased that he is returning for this year’s series which focuses on the complexity and character of the 16th president of the United States in this the 200th anniversary year of his birth. Brian Dirck is Assistant Professor of History at Anderson University and holds a Doctoral Degree from University of Kansas. Among the six books he has authored or coauthored are three on Lincoln: Lincoln the Lawyer, Lincoln and Davis: Imagining America and Lincoln Emancipated: The President and the Politics of Race. Each of the four thematically connected Winter History Series lectures takes place at 7 p.m. in the Beckwith Room. The 45 minute presentations are followed by a 30 minute question and answer �� period and all are free and open to �� the public. Bromley’s “Mom’s Day Off” Raises $5,505 to Battle Breast Cancer

The Middletown Springs Historical Society will be holding its 21st annual Maple Festival on the Green on Sunday, March 22, 1-4 p.m. The event will feature Fed Bradley’s demonstration of early maple sugarmaking in a cast iron kettle over an open fire. Bill Clark, past president of the Vermont Maple Sugarmakers Association, will give a talk on the evolution of sugaring techniques using examples from the Historical Society collection. Delicious maple desserts, maple products and crafts, and 2009 syrup will be available for sale. A raffle will be held during the festival with over 25 prizes including $75 and $50 in cash, maple gift baskets, maple syrup, maple syrup products, craft items and more. On Friday, February 6, the seventh annual “Mom’s Day Off,” a breast cancer fundraiser sponsored by and held at Bromley Mountain, drew 367 moms and raised a hefty - and record - sum of $5,505. That brings the seven-year total to just shy of $30,000. The notion behind the annual event is that any mom can ski or ride Bromley on “Mom’s Day Off ” for $15 when they show the ticket seller a snapshot of their kids. Bromley, in turn, donates the entire $15 to the VT/NH Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure (the Race for the Cure people). “This was Bromley’s seventh Mom’s Day Off, but it was my first,” said Rich Wiseman, who was named Bromley’s President in April of 2008. “It’s quite a thing to see, really, hundreds of women rolling up in cars, vans and buses, women of all ages, skiing and riding with a single purpose and having an absolute blast doing it. We’re incredibly proud, and very happy to be a part of it all.” Bromley is also a sponsor of the annual Komen VT/NH Race for the Cure, held each year on the last Sunday in July at the Hildene Meadows, in Manchester. Egg-Cellent Science: All About the Egg

Come to the Mark Skinner Library: Manchester’s Public Library on Saturday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. Try your hand at the “Great Egg Drop!” Watch a bottle swallow an egg! Scientist and author Rebecca Rupp has a PhD in biology and biochemistry. She frequently does science and book related workshops. She is the author of The Dragon of Lonely Island, The Waterstone, Sarah Simpson’s Rules for Living, and many other books for children. This family program is best for children ages 6 - 10 and younger children with supportive caregivers. This 45-minute program is free and open to the public. Stratton Foundation Presents the Third Biennial Black and Blue Bash

A memorable event, featuring dining and dancing to the music of a fabulous band, Doc Scanlon’s Rhythm Boys, is returning to Stratton Mountain on Saturday, March 28. They played at the second Black & Blue Bash in March 2007 and are back by popular demand. Dressing for the evening is always fun! Denim and black tie is the requested attire. National Trust Lends Support to the Town of Pawlet

The Town of Pawlet, Vermont today was awarded a $2,000 matching grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s grant program, the Preservation Fund. The grant funds will be used to cover consulting fees for the stabilization and restoration of the recently discovered circa 1880s stenciled and hand-painted ceiling in the second floor auditorium of the Pawlet Town Hall. The multi-phase restoration of this National Register-listed building has included upgrades to the electricity, plumbing, heating, insulation, and records storage, as well as restoring the front porch, opening up the meeting room on the main floor, and reorganizing the office spaces. The current phase of restoring the second floor auditorium and stage area can be completed once this historic ceiling has been stabilized and restored. Future phases include the restoration of the cupola and the installation of a three-stop elevator, restoration of the remaining porches, and the installation of a fire stair accessing all three floors. These changes will make this Town-owned treasure fully accessible to the community for meetings and functions once again. Through its Preservation Fund, the National Trust offers small matching grants to nonprofit groups and public agencies to support a wide range of local historic preservation projects across the nation. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, chartered by Congress in 1949, is a nonprofit organization with more than 270,000 members. As the leader of the national preservation movement, it is committed to saving America’s diverse historic environments and to preserving and revitalizing the livability of communities nationwide. The Northeast Office coordinates the programs of the National Trust within the ten northeastern states and provides a wide range of services adapted to the needs of the region.

The Ross Powers Foundation’s 7th Annual US OPEN Poker Tournament

The Ross Powers Foundation is holding their annual U.S. Open Poker Tournament at the Red Fox Inn, Winhall Hollow Road, Bondville, Vt. It’s only minutes from Stratton Mountain; take a left at the bottom of Stratton Access Rd.; a Right onto Winhall Hollow Rd.; it is 1 mile on your left. This event will be held on Thursday, march 19. The tournament is $125 dollars. One time $75 re-buy/add on. Payment will be received during registration please bring cash or check, receipts available. Registration will be held between 5-5:30 with a 6 p.m. start time. The prize money will be 50 percent of the entry fees and 50 percent will go directly to the Ross Powers Foundation. Crudités and Appetizers will be served to participants along with a cash bar. The Ross Powers Foundation is a nonprofit foundation that provides financial support to talented Olympic hopefuls. The nursing staff of Mountain Valley Medical Center is enjoying their state-of-the-art vital signs monitor purchased with funds received from the Stratton Foundation. “We are very grateful for the support received by the Stratton Foundation”, says Cyndi MacDonald R.N. “Their continued support allows us to purchase much needed medical equipment in helping our busy practice care for patients who walk through our doors.” The vitals signs monitor will be located at the nursing check in station and can be used in the exams rooms as well. Going Green in Gourmet Style! A Cooking Series

Green is the thing. Hybrid cars, recycling, CFL light bulbs, alternative energy, the consumer is bombarded with information and choices. In the grocery store you see foods marked “organic”, “free range” and “whole grain”. But, are all products truly as green and healthy as advertised? Where do they come from? How can we be more aware of what we consume on a daily basis while still enjoying delicious food? Equinox Village Executive Chef Glenn Blackledge will discuss these questions and other related topics while demonstrating the preparation of decadent 4-course meals in a 4-part cooking series hosted in the elegant dining room at Equinox Village. Stratton Foundation Awards McCarty Grant to Community Food Cupboard

The Community Food Cupboard has received a grant from the Stratton Foundation to purchase and distribute 125 dozen eggs each month for six months. The Stratton Foundation has supported CFC in its mission to end hunger in our community since 2006. Since then, nearly 45,000 eggs have been distributed to families in need. “The number of families seeking assistance from CFC has risen by thirty percent over the past two years,” reports CFC Administrator Martha Carey. “The Stratton Foundation has been a huge help to us as we try to meet the increase in need, yet still provide fresh and healthful foods to families who need them.” The mission of the Stratton Foundation is to enhance the quality of life and create a sense of community in Southern Vermont. Annual Banquet, Auction for Local NRA

The Green Mountain Friends of the NRA will be holding their annual benefit banquet and auction on Saturday, March 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the newly renovated Mount Anthony Country Club in Bennington, Vt. Animals and other critters occupied the most recent Topics & Tangents discussion at the Terrace. Several people have noticed three black squirrels, the size and shape of gray squirrels, romping around in the trees nearby. No one could remember ever seeing black squirrels before now. One resident, when young, had a cat named Vaseline America III, which became a hero one night. The cat was sleeping �� by the woodstove when some�� thing went wrong with the stove. �� The cat gave a loud yowl to rouse �� the family, and a disastrous fire �� was prevented. Almost everyone had beloved �� pets, which were fondly remem�� bered, usually by name: a col�� lie named Lassie, another collie named Laddie, an oriole named Penny, a dachshund named Homer, and a dachshund named Jack, who was scolded once by his owner in a loud voice, alarming a visitor whose name was also �� Jack. Long-time residents and �� staff recall a parrot named Polly �� that used to live at the Terrace. �� It was very talkative, had a large vocabulary (not all of it respectable), and could imitate the ringing of a telephone with perfect accuracy. It would wait for staff to walk by so it could “ring the phone” and make a staff member �� run to answer it, whereupon the �� parrot would cackle with delight at its own joke.

Dartmouth Professor Shares Story of New Hampshire’s World War II POW Camp

Historian and Dartmouth College Professor Allen Koop will tell the story of Camp Stark, New Hampshire’s only World War II prisoner-of-war camp for German soldiers, in a talk at Manchester’s First Congregational Church on April 1. The talk, “Stark Decency: German POWs in a New England Village,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and takes place at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Koop will tell a little-known New England story that reveals greater themes of human dignity and integrity. He will share how prisoners, guards, and ordinary people in the tiny northern village of

Wantastiquet Rotary Scholarship Applications

The Wantastiquet Rotary Club is pleased to announce the availability of four $1,500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to further their education with either college or vocational study. Eligible students must reside in the Mountain Valley area serviced by the Wantastiquet Rotary Club, comprised of the towns of Londonderry, Peru, Landgrove, Weston, Windham, Winhall and Jamaica. Selection is based on financial need, academic potential, and school and community involvement. Applications for the Wantastiquet Rotary Club Scholarship are available through area high school guidance departments or registrars’ offices. Students residing in the towns listed above but attending school outside the area may request an application by calling Malcolm Hamblett at 824-6913. Completed applications must be postmarked by Friday, April 11, 2009. Since 1981 more than $118,000 has been awarded in scholarships. Our biggest fundraiser for the scholarship fund is our annual Penny Sale. Traditionally this has been held on President’s Weekend in February. This year the club is moving the Penny Sale to a new date and location in the hope of attracting a larger audience. It will be held on Saturday, May 16 at Flood Brook Union School, beginning at 6:30 p.m. In addition to three sessions of prizes, a silent auction and 50/50 raffle, new this year will be a Penny Sale session just for kids. Green Mountain Festival Series Annual Silent Auction

On Saturday, March 21, the Green Mountain Festival Series will hold its annual Silent Auction to raise funds for its Arts in Education Program. The Auction will be held in conjunction with a lively performance by Wood’s Tea Company and will be located in the gallery at the Green Mountain Union High School in Chester. There will be a wide variety of items up for bid; ranging from jewelry, a basket of wine and chocolate, a lobster dinner for six, and a Vermont Teddy Bear to gift certificates from our supportive local restaurants and merchants. The funds raised from this event provide each child in the Windsor Southwest Supervisory Union with exposure to a variety of artistic disciplines. These opportunities may include performances, an artist in residence, or visiting artists going into individual classrooms to complement curriculum focus areas. Burr and Burton Academy Sophomore Wins State Voice of Democracy Oral Essay Contest

Burr and Burton Academy sophomore Hannah Harrington received word recently that she was chosen as the State of Vermont winner of the Voice of Democracy Oral Essay Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition to a prize of $1,000, Harrington will receive an allexpense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in April where she will compete with the winners of the other 49 states for a $30,000 college scholarship. The highlight of the trip is an opportunity to meet President of the United States Barack Obama. Harrington said she was thrilled to win the competition and have

the chance to meet the new president. She wrote her essay on how impressed she was with her first trip to the nation’s capital in seventh grade and how moving she found the memorials and monuments. The main point of her essay she said was “how veterans have done so much and sacrificed so much to ensure that the people in my generation have the opportunities that they do today.” Woven into her essay were reflections on the American Revolution and the early days of the democracy. She recorded her essay using GarageBand, burned a CD, and sent it off to the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization, little dreaming she would win. “I received a lot of encouragement from the local VFW people,” she said, “and I am very grateful to them.” Created in 1947, the Voice of Democracy (VOD) scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12 that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships. The VOD program is endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ contest criteria and is designed to foster patriotism by allowing students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a three- to five-minute essay based on an annual theme. _______________________________________________

Meet Dog-Lovers at Social Event

Leave your dog at home and come to the Southern Vermont Art Center (SVAC) to meet people who share your love of animals! This “mixer” will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27 to benefit the Manchester Vermont Dog Park Foundation, which hopes to complete the construction of this 1⁄2 acre enclosed park-like area in the months ahead. Meeting and connecting with new people at this mixer will be easy with the help of dog bone-shaped nametags that include the names of both the owner and dog along with the dog’s breed. The $20 admission fee goes directly to the Manchester Vermont Dog Park Foundation. There will also be tasty hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. In addition to learning more about this new community resource at the Manchester recreation area, attendees will have a chance to purchase raffle tickets to benefit Second Chance Animal Shelter and get information about SVAC’s upcoming summer exhibition entitled “Paws and Reflect: the Art of the Canine”. Free Gardening Workshop

SPRINGTIME, and gardener’s thoughts turn to the upcoming growing season. While green thumbs in our region are waiting for the ground to thaw, they can make the most of their “indoor” time with free workshops at Mettowee Mill Nursery. The Dorset Garden Center’s series will look at spring garden maintenance, pruning and seed starting with three weekend workshops. On Saturday, March 21, the annual series will kick off with “Spring Perennial Gardening”. Mettowee Mill’s garden maintenance department manager Donna Andersen will offer advice on assessing and maintaining your garden in the early season. She will also give valuable tips to follow summer through fall. On Saturday, March 28 Brian King will present the popular, “Pruning” seminar. Mettowee Mill’s nursery manager, Brian King, will demonstrate the correct way to prune fruit trees, shrubs, and spring and summer blooming trees. The workshop series wraps up on April 4, with Scout Proft of Someday Farm in conjunction with Renee’s Seeds “The Basics of Vegetable Gardening”. Scout will go over consecutive sowing of garden vegetables with a focus on leafy green vegetables. The workshops are free and begin at 10 a.m. Seating is limited so preregistration is recommended. As much anticipated as spring’s first daffodils, Greenwich Central High School’s annual Pops Concert fundraiser will this year be performed Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 at 7 p.m. Internationally renowned jazz pianist Lee Shaw will work with GCS music students as an artist-in-residence in the week prior, and will perform solo and with the GCS jazz ensemble and piano students at Friday evening’s concert. The Pops Concert will be preceded by a traditional Italian dinner catered by Testo’s Restaurant of North Troy, which begins each night at 5:30 p.m. Lee Shaw has had her own swinging, acoustic jazz piano trio for more than 40 years, during which time she performed in numerous clubs, concerts, and festivals in the United States and Europe. (A Capital District resident, she performs regularly at Justin’s and 74 State in Albany, the Stockade Inn in Schenectady, and One Caroline St. in Saratoga Springs.) Shaw has been adjunct faculty at the College of Saint Rose since 1983, and also instructs privately. She is an ardently passionate teacher. “So many jazz musicians have been so generous to me in the past that the only way I can truly thank them is to pass on to my students what I learned from them,” she says. Patrons can purchase a dinner plus concert ticket for $15 ($10 for seniors and students), or a concert only ticket for $7 ($5 for seniors and students). Dinner includes a meal of baked ziti with meatballs and salad served buffet-style in the high school cafeteria. Following at 7 p.m., the Pops Concert will feature a mix of instrumental, vocal and drama performances of jazz standards, gospel songs and spirituals by GCHS 7-12 grade music and drama students. Susan Gordon and Diane Rougeau, vocal and instrumental teachers, respectively, in the GCHS Music Department, will serve as co-directors of the weekend’s performances. Tickets are available for sale at the GCS high school office, and at village Main St. businesses Something’s Brewing, North Country Flowers and the Greenwich Local Market. Oliver Twist in Arlington

Arlington Middle School students will present the musical version of Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” Tuesday, March 31, and Wednesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. in the Mack Performing Arts Center. A matinee show will be held Thursday, April 2, at 1 p.m. for Fisher Elementary students. All three performances are free and open to the public. One of Dickens’ most popular novels, “Oliver Twist” tells the story of a young orphan’s life in early-1800s London where violence, bullying and unsavory characters are at every turn. Play Director and Arlington Music and Choral Teacher Patti Cody notes that “Oliver” is a more serious production than those in the recent past. The production, written especially for middle school actors, includes 24 sixth, seventh and eighth grade Arlington students in the cast. The four main characters are portrayed as follows: Oliver Twist, Hailey Davis; Fagan, Hannah Poulette; Sykes, Duncan Gamble and Nancy, Amber Welch. Cody will be accompanied by Pianist Ashley Coulter. On Wednesday, March 25 from 3 to 6 p.m. the Southern Vermont Arts Center invites all of the students participating in the 8th annual Art from the Schools exhibition, and their families, to join them in Yester House Gallery for the free, annual Young Picassos Pizza Party. As is their custom, benefactress and longstanding SVAC member, Barbara Riley, and past president and Honorary Trustee, Jim Lee, will be on hand to meet and greet all attendees. Great pizza and assorted refreshments will be served courtesy of local businesses and live musical entertainment will be provided by student musicians from the Long Trail School. The overall event is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Jonathan Levin Educational Endowment.
