Air Force Airman Arthur Lowery has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of John Lowery of Allerton Ave., Brattleboro, Vt., and Mellisa Nelson of Hide St., Bellows Falls, Vt. The airman is a 2008 graduate of Brattleboro Union High School. March 4, 2009

Tea Cup Auction

A Tea Cup Auction will be held at the Modern Woodman of America hall, Main Street, Route 30, Wells, VT, on Friday evening, March 6. This event will begin at 6 p.m., where you will find a great selection of over 400 items of household items, canned goods, cereals, toiletries, knickknacks, flea items, magazines, books, videos, house plants, great baked goods and maple and jam products. Viewing and bidding will be held from 6 to7 p.m. with the bid drawing starting at 7. You purchase envelopes of tickets at $1 each. Put them in the cup of your choice and wait till the drawing. Refreshments will be sold, including hot dogs, toppings, meat sauce, chips, ice cream, sundaes, beverages, donuts and door prices will be available. Developmental Screening at Mettawee Community School

BRSU Early Education, Rutland Head Start and Rutland Family, Infant and Toddler Programs host the annual developmental screening for infant to 5 year olds at Mettawee Community School. Each spring the Early Education Program offers a free child development screening for young children living in all towns within the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union. The goal of an early childhood screening is to provide parents with a picture of their child’s developmental strengths and/or needs and to increase awareness of services available to children and families in our area. The school districts also utilize screening information to plan for future student enrollment and special programs. All children, infant to 5 years of age are encouraged to take part in the screening, regardless of potential eligibility for early education services. This year the play-based screening will take place at the Mettawee Community School on Friday, March 13, and Tuesday, March 17. Shoppe Off Broadway Supports Youth Programs

Spring is on the way, and in March the Shoppe Off Broadway thrift store in Salem will start displaying fresh spring merchandise. Also, there is still a good selection of winter wear for any cool days or nights yet to come. The Shoppe Off Broadway is part of the Historic Salem Courthouse Preservation Association, a not-for-profit organization. The mission of the Shoppe is to provide a source of affordable clothing and to generate earnings which support youth activities in the courthouse and community. They recently made a donation to the Festival Chorus comprised of children from the surrounding area who will be singing in Germany this summer. Two weeks ago, the Shoppe made a generous contribution to the courthouse which will be used for their numerous youth programs offered in 2009. Both contributions were greatly appreciated. The Shoppe is part of the courthouse complex in Salem directly across from the Salem Central School. Shoppe hours are: Wednesday, 1 - 6 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Bag sales are held for four days each month starting on the last Wednesday of the month. If you are looking for very reasonably priced new and gently used clothing and shoes for the entire family as well as household goods, toys, books and home décor, “Shop The Shoppe”.

Family Matters is a series of educational workshops for parents of preschool age children developed by the Head Start program. The third workshop is Positive Guidance and it’s being offered in Manchester. If it seems like you are doing all the talking and your child is not listening, come learn about some effective techniques from Terry Yavaniski. Terry is an early childhood mental health specialist from Bennington County Child Care Association (BCCCA) who works with the Children Upstream Program sponsored by United Counseling Service. This workshop will be held at Northshire Day School, which is located in Manchester on 5484 Main Street. It is scheduled on Thursday, March 5, from 6-7:30 p.m. Childcare is available. This workshop is collaboratively sponsored by Head Start (another program through United Counseling Service), Northshire Day School, Children Upstream (CUPS), and BCCCA. While most everyone understands that hemophilia is Families�who�complete�a�Guiding�Good�Choices�workshop� �� an inherited bleeding disorder, most are surprised to learn that the dis�� could�get�paid�up�to�$65.oo� for�completing�the�program!�� order can spontaneously appear in children whose parents don’t have the disorder. This was the case with Blake. After a series of medical procedures and with the now daily doses of clotting factor that he receives intravenously, Blake is doing well and is living the life of a normal, healthy six year old - well, almost. There is currently no cure for hemophilia but with funding and research - last year’s event drew 107 participants and raised $20,000, which went directly to fund bleeding disorder research. The Fifth Annual Alpine Snowshoe Walk & Dinner to benefit the National Hemophilia Foundation takes place on Saturday, March 14, at Stratton Mountain. Bayer Health Care is the title sponsor of this year’s event. The day starts at 1:30 p.m., at Stratton’s Sun Bowl, with a scenic snowshoe walk (3k or 5k, as you like) followed by cocktails and dinner, at 6:30 p.m., at the Inn at Stratton Mountain. There will be a Silent Auction and a raffle drawing for a pearl necklace valued at $850, a golf day for four, gift certificates to area restaurants and much more. There will also be a raffle for gift certificates to area restaurants and stores, photo art and more. Donations for the walk are $25 per person 17 years of age or older (16 and under are free with paying adult); anyone donating $50 or more is invited to a celebratory dinner that evening. Raffle tickets for the eight strand freshwater pearl necklace are $25; purchase your tickets by sending a check payable to the New England Hemophilia Association to New England Hemophilia Association, 347 Washington Street, Suite 402, Dedham, MA 02026. Celebration of Life for Bill Taylor

It is with equal measures of sadness and fond memories that the board of the Southern �� Vermont Arts Center marks the �� passing of William S. Taylor, a �� great friend and much loved for�� mer president of the Arts Center. There will be a celebration of Mr. Bill Taylor at a “Past Presidents” Taylor’s life at the United Church luncheon, 1993 �� of Dorset at 2 p.m., March 7, fol�� lowed by a reception for friends and family at the Arts Center from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All are welcome. �� Bill Taylor died peacefully at his home in East Dorset on November �� 22, 2008, surrounded by family and dear friends. He was the husband of the late Sigrun (Palmgren) Taylor who died in 1988. In the summer �� of 1969, at the age of 47, Bill was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, �� which ultimately brought his successful investment career with United �� States Trust Company of New York to an end. After retiring in 1976, he �� and Sigrun - an accomplished artist who would go on to have several shows at the Arts Center - moved from Manhattan to East Dorset, where they both became actively involved artist members of the Arts Center. In September of 1986, Mr. Taylor was elected to a fiveyear term on SVAC’s Board of Trustees, serving as Vice President during his first year and then as President for two seasons, from 1987 to 1989. During his five-year term he also served on the Executive and Finance Committees. “Bill literally transformed the Arts Center,” said Executive Director, Christopher Madkour, who was named director the same day that Taylor became president. “He unified the board and membership, probably for the first time, and encouraged �� everyone to work from the same �� spot, toward the same goal. The �� mutual respect and shared vision �� that Bill engendered within this �� organization is a lasting testa�� ment to his dedication to the �� Arts Center. Haystack Hustlers March Schedule

Haystack Hustlers Seniors will meet at the Pawlet Church, March 10, 12 noon for our “Celebrate The Maple Season” lunch and program. Lunch will be provided. Gina Mason and Jana Mason, members of Mettowee Valley Grange will be our chefs. Bring stories to share about Maple Sugaring. We also will be planning the program for the rest of the year, so bring ideas of what you would like to do. March 24th, we will meet at the Mettowee School for lunch. Community Food Cupboard Announces Feinstein Challenge Grant

For the twelfth straight year, the Feinstein Foundation of Rhode Island will divide $1,000,000 among hunger fighting agencies throughout the country. With your help we can bring some of this money here to the Northshire area. Each contribution made to the Community Food Cupboard between March 1 and April 30, 2009, will earn CFC a portion of that grant. The Community Food Cupboard has relied upon the generosity of this community to serve families in need for almost twenty years. Now more than ever, we need your help. The number of families we serve each week has increased by thirty percent over the last two years. In the last quarter of 2008 alone, more than 200 households received assistance from CFC. With every dollar you donate, we can purchase and distribute ten pounds of food. During March and April, it can go even further. If you would like to take up the challenge with us, please send a check or money order to: CFC, P.O. Box 864, Manchester Center, VT 05255, and mark it “Feinstein’s Challenge”. Free Winter Community Supper

The second supper was a great success with 105 attending and over 25 take-out dinners. We hope everyone will join us—moms and dads who need a break, people who want a night out in the middle of winter, families rushing from work to sports, people stretching their budget, newcomers to the area wanting to meet the neighbors— the suppers are meant to build community for everyone. Long Trail School Student Writes Composition Orchestra Concert

Dorset-Peter Kosmorsky, a junior at Long Trail School, has com�� posed music that will be performed by Sage City Orchestra on Sunday, March 8. The 4 p.m. concert will be held at Greenwall Auditorium in the VAPA Building at Bennington College. The College’s Robert Singley is heading up a project he calls Composing for Orchestra with area high school students. �� Kosmorsky takes an Independent Study/Music Composition class at LTS with instrumental music director Peggy D’Amour. He was �� given the instrumentation of the Sage City Orchestra from North �� Bennnington, VT and was commissioned to write a piece of music �� for them to perform. Kosmorsky started with the idea of writing a fugue-like composition. His resulting composition will be per�� formed along with others by area high school students. One result �� of the March 8 performance in �� Kosmorsky’s eyes is that he will “no �� longer be anonymous.” �� Long Trail School combines rig�� orous academics and a personal�� ized curriculum for grades 6-12. �� For more information, please �� contact Courtney Callo at 8675717, ext. 141. ��

For the ninth year in a row, Barrows House Innkeepers Linda and Jim McGinnis are hosting their spring series of Simple Suppers, the proceeds of which go wholly to the Community Food Cupboard of Manchester. The single-dish menu includes a hearty soup (different every week) with a delicious bread (always a new recipe), along with tea/ coffee for a $10-per-adult contribution (kids get soup, bread, & milk at $5 each). Explaining the long-running tradition, Linda McGinnis says, “The idea is to have a light meal and go to bed that night a little hungryin solidarity with our brothers and sisters in this country and around the world who go to bed hungry.” This year’s Simple Suppers will take place at 6 p.m. on six Tuesdays, March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, and April 7, at the Barrows House on Route 30 in Dorset. Lots of Locks of Love from Maple Street School

to be able to do this for children in need and we are equally excited and proud that she is doing it.” Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides recipients with a custom hairpiece made entirely from donated human hair. Most of the applicants suffer from an autoimmune condition called alopecia areata for which there is no known cause or cure. The organization, which began operation in 1998, has helped over 2000 children since its first year of operation. For the third year in a row, Maple Street School has donated hair to Locks of Love. This year, students Lucy Bisselle, Miranda Eisenman, and Madison Greene, each donated a ponytail measuring at least 10 inches of hair, as required by Locks of Love. Green Door Day Spa stylist and Maple Street parent, Ronda Ihasz, did the honors of cutting and styling each of the donors’ hair. For Miranda, a five-year old kindergartener, this was only her second “real” haircut. She was proud to share with the school that her only other haircut took place when she was just two years old, “I was just a kid when I had my last hair cut.” For Rene and Bill Greene, parents of first grader Madison, this was a proud moment and a tear of joy fell from their eyes as their daughter’s hair was cut. “Madison is truly excited

Classically trained at Oberlin, New England Conservatory, Tanglewood and Gratz, Austria; Lindsay toured around the world performing in “Cats”, “The King and I”, “Hello Dolly” and starred as Maria in “West Side Story.” Lindsay also toured with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford in the national “Andrew Lloyd Webber” concert. Northshire Hockey Teams

The Northshire Hockey Association’s Squirt A/B Team recently competed at the Vermont State Amateur Hockey Association’s 20089 State Championships and finished in third place. The Northshire Squirts beat teams from Essex, Stowe and Milton but lost to eventual State Champions Brattleboro and Runner-up CVSA. The team was presented with a granite trophy on center ice that is now proudly displayed in Riley Rink’s trophy case. During the tournament, goals were scored by Ryan Keelan, Jack Ams, Matt Mullen, George Little, James Moore, Maxx Ingeson and Cameron Turner. Joey Citera and Kevin Souls are the Squirt’s goalies. Other players include Aggie Bisselle, Giselle Cazaudumec, Sam Cottrell, James Doherty, Thomas Grabher, Chris Kornaros, Henry Kornaros, Nathan Severance and Jackson Thibodeau. The team will travel next to Woodstock, VT for the SCUBA tournament in early March to cap off their season and to defend their 2008 SCUBA Championship win. Woman’s Club Health Day Committee Finalize Plans For a Great Event

The 15th Annual Women’s Health Day, By Women for Women, takes place on Saturday, April 25, at the Salem Central School from 8:00 a.m. ..to 2:20 p.m. The Salem Area Woman’s Club Health Day Committee has planned a full day event certainly to be enjoyed by all who attend. After Ms. McGhee’s address, each registrant will attend three different 45 minute workshops. This year’s workshops range from Biofeedback to finances to therapeutic Qi Gong, a form of Chinese exercises focusing on breathing. The Manchester Shambhala Meditation Group invites you to an upcoming Public Talk entitled “When Things Fall Apart, Developing Dignity in Difficult Times”. March is Red Cross Month

The American Red Cross is present in communities across the United States to provide relief to disaster victims and to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply for patients and hospitals. The American Red Cross holds blood drives seven days a week across Northern New England so that blood is always available for patients in need. Area residents and visitors alike are encouraged to give blood on Wednesday, March 11 at the First Congregational Church in Manchester. Curves Supports Communities With 11th Annual Food Drive

During the month of March, Curves of Manchester will participate in the 11th Annual Curves Food Drive to benefit local food banks. Collectively, over the past five years, nearly 50 million pounds of food were distributed to local communities all over the world through the Curves Food Drive. Curves of Manchester is also giving back to the community by waiving its normal service fee for any new member who brings in a bag of non-perishable groceries and joins between March 9 and March 28. “The Curves Food Drive is always exciting,” said Darryl Davis, the owner of the Manchester club, located at 4977 Main Street, Manchester Center. Battenkill Conservancy Recipient of Orvis Donation

The Battenkill Conservancy has been selected as one of the recipients of an Orvis donation generated by last year’s sale of fish pellets used by visitors to feed the great many trout swimming in the company’s flagship store located in Manchester Center, VT. Book Club Off to the Amazon with March Book Choice

On the second Monday of the month for the past three years, the Hildene History Book Club has been meeting to discuss books on a wide range of historically relevant topics. Their March choice takes them to the Amazon as they have chosen “The Mapmaker’s Wife”, by Robert Whitaker. Published in 2004, this narrative history is a tale of adventure and love set in the heart of the Amazonian Jungle in the early years of the 18th century. It recounts the true story of the 10 year expedition of “a band of French scientists who set off to South America in a race to measure the precise shape of the earth.” Bryce Christensen gives the work two thumbs up in his review for Now you can read the Booklist, focusing his comments on explorer, Isabel Grameson. Interfaith Chorus Begins Rehearsals

The Northshire Interfaith Chorus will begin rehearsals for its Spring 2009 concert to be presented in June. Will Moses Painting Unveiled at BBC Arts Event

Anticipation is mounting as well known folk artist, Will Moses, puts the final touches on an original painting he has created to depict The Shires of Vermont. The venue chosen for the unveiling of his work is Better Bennington Corporation’s first ever “One Hundred for $100,” art show and sale, to take place Friday, March 20 from 5 to 9 and Saturday, March 21 from 10 to 4 in the Nichols Building at 457 Main St. in downtown Bennington. The event will feature one hundred works of art by local, professional artists all for sale for $100 each. John Shannahan, BBC’s Executive Director sums up the event and unveiling this way, “One Hundred for $100” furthers our mission to support our vital arts community and vital downtown and provides an opportunity to meet the artists and learn about their techniques and inspirations. We are pleased that The Shires of Vermont regional marketing organization has chosen our venue to give the public its first glimpse of the Moses painting, as well as an opportunity to meet the artist.” Will Moses, great grandson of renowned folk artist, Grandma Moses carries on the family tradition with a style, that while reminiscent of his great grandmother’s, is more complex and sophisticated. He was commissioned nearly a year ago to create, in his celebrated style, a visual image to represent the region that encompasses the north and south shires of Bennington County with Manchester, Bennington and 15 towns and villages, known collectively as The Shires of Vermont. Ellen Questel’s Luminous Landscapes at Canﬁeld Library

Concurrent with the changing seasons, local pastel artist Ellen Questel will be showing her recent work, almost all based on local landscapes, at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington, VT, from March 3 through 31. Join Ellen for an opening reception on Saturday, March 7 from 3–5 p.m. Having long loved and been involved with visual imagery, Questel majored in art history at Sarah Lawrence College and then entered the graduate program at The Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, where she majored in modern art and minored in ancient art. She then began graduate work in psychology and earned an MA and PhD. Academically, Questel’s interests have focused on areas related to art: the study of visual thinking, the psychology of art, and the exploration of dream imagery. Questel attributes her inspiration to two main sources: the shifting beauty of the Vermont landscape and the sensuous lure of the pastels themselves. She says, “Although I have worked in other media, I am fascinated by the pure pigments of pastels and the possibility they offer for expressing the mood and feeling of the natural world. ENTERTAINMENT Dorset Players Present ‘Crimes Of The Heart’

The Dorset Players’ third full-scale production this season will be “Crimes of the Heart,” playwright Beth Henley’s tragi-comedy about three sisters coping with one crisis after another. Proudly sponsored by Bickford Real Estate, performances will be at the Dorset Playhouse on Cheney Road in Dorset, Vermont at 7:30 p.m. on March 6, 7, 13 and 14 and at 2 p.m. on March 8 and 15. Set in a small Mississippi hamlet in 1978, the play, which was awarded the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, follows the travails of one sister, Babe, who shot her husband because she “didn’t like his looks,” Meg, a would-be country music singer who blossomed early but stumbled late, and Lenny, approaching her advancing age with “a shrunken ovary” and no romantic prospects. Lauren Smilansky, fresh from her turn in the title role in this season’s production of “The Little Mermaid,” will appear as Babe. Christy Vogel, who won raves for her turn as Mozart’s spouse, Constanze, in last season’s production of “Amadeus,” and appeared last fall as Simone Jenkins, the agent for a potential financial backer in “Room Service,” will be Meg. Making her debut on the Playhouse stage as Lenny will be Sara Cohen. Elizabeth Hazelton, remembered for her portrayal of Catherine in 2004’s “Proof ” and also appeared in “Don’t Dress for Dinner” and “Moon over Buffalo,” returns to the Playhouse stage as the sisters’ interfering cousin, “Chick the Stick.” Chris Restino, who played the title character in “Amadeus,” as well as Faker in “Room Service,” will be Doc.
